Love your channel! Instead of using the string try keeping some wooden spring clothespins handy for a quick clip to close up the frost blankets! You can usually get them at the dollar store, we always keep them on hand for all kinds of things closing our chip bags, pet food bags, etc.
Great idea Yuliya, I don’t have plants that would need that kind of protection but it’s always nice to see how other gardeners are taking care of their own! I hope your hydrangeas bloom beautifully for you!
I’m a very protective Plant Papa, especially when it comes to my Hostas. Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to see them in the coming garden season. 😊😊🇨🇦
I haven't had a way cold winter here in Maryland on the shore for some yrs, thinking I better look at my forecast now, Thanks. I did see a while ago actually mine have some new buds showing.
I live in Illinois and have found very thick and easy to install protective covers for my hydrangea on Amazon. Several different sizes to, choose from. They fold flat for easy storage. I’m excited to see if my hydrangeas bloom this year. I’ve not had blooms in 3 years and finally had an abundance of buds form last fall so I could not risk having beautiful blooms this year. Love your channel and your dog 🐶❤️😊
I have to cover my citrus here in zone 8 sometimes too. Luckily, they are all small ! I use big office supply paper clips to keep my frost blanket closed. Works great. And I double mine too. Good video ❤
I remember my grandpa doing the same when I was little I used to think to myself" how does grandpa know their cold and why not cover all the plants?" But as I grew up I found out. Thanks for sharing.
I can’t believe you don’t usually cover these...I’m also in zone 6 and the hard freeze always gets those buds. But I also think a few of my plants are the non-hardy supermarket type (they were given to me but I’m pretty sure). This winter we built a cage around them and covered that. I’m really hoping I’ll get blooms this year. If not, they’re gone and maybe I’ll try one of those “reblooming” types.
Yuliya, I'm glad you didn't use plastic like so many people. They do more damage than good. Is that material that you used impervious to rain because if it gets wet it can freeze. I cover my plants with a old blankets or old sheets then cover with plastic so in case it rains it will not get heavy from being wet and doing damage to the plants. I've also used inexpensive table covers that are line with I believe cotton on the underside and usually they have a decorated pattern on top made of plastic this works well to keep rain out off the plants. Let me know what you think.
Thank you for your video, I just found you and watching your videos. :) We just bought land in Missouri and will be moving there soon to start a garden and live off land :) It's a bit scary but we can do it :) Thank you again.
Trying to cover plants in the cold and wind is not fun. Good for you to take the time to take us along. I wouldn’t have thought to tie the shrub up first to make it smaller and the job slightly easier.
Hay girl. Good idea. I live in pa zone 5b. I covered mine. As per you reminding me. Hehe. I cant wait until spring. I am making moss balls for some Easter decorating...an for floral arrangement. Xoxo dana from pa
I'm in zone 6 too and I have never covered mine . With mine, no matter what I do to them (or don't do to them ) its 'hit or miss ' to whether they bloom each year or not . One year was sooooooooooo amazing , their blue color everywhere. The next year , I got only one huge blue flower. I think I better get outside and cover mine ! Just to be on the safe side! Thank you Yulia for the heads up !!!
I've been complaining about my winter here in NM. I just moved to this location and I'm not accustomed to this "cold"...Yikes!!! You Canadians are really cold. I'm so sorry I complained. I would be doing whatever to protect my "babies". Good job!!!
You mentioned a hard freeze, which I thought was 28 degrees and less. Does the winter not fluctuate with these freezing temps and if so would one need to go in and out putting the blanket on then off, multiple times? I have a Miss Saori macrophylla that has never bloomed, since being planted. I live in zone 7a and have thought of taking it out because of that... I'm frustrated.
I hope your hydrangeas are okay! I planted some limelights for the first time in my zone 3a here in Canada. I mulched but that was about it so I hope it survives as it was -41c with the windchill a couple of days ago. No one else covers theirs here so I didnt either. We will see.
Got down to -24c/-11.2f however my hydrangeas are no longer visible due to the 4ft-5ft of snow in the days leading up to our deep freeze ❄️🌨️🧣🧤🧦 (Ontario, 🇨🇦)
Hi Yulia this is unrelated to the topic, but I have a question about your white raised bed. Did you put anything in the bottom of it and where did you got it from. I’m also in NJ and I’m glad I found your channel.
Heads up yulia there's a cold snap coming your way. I think I live near you and Thurs and Fri night we are getting in the 20s again! Protect those hydrangeas!!
I've probably lost a lot of blooms already. What I can't figure out is why they are budding so early??? Its been a pretty steady cold here! (6b SW Pa.) Last year we had a warm snap and then a freeze. I lost all but 1 bloom on one of my bushes! I need to invest in that cloth! How long can it be left on?
I only had one measly bloom on my Nikko Blue last year, but I think it was because of the deer. How do you know in spring if your plant has been frost damaged?
My pup chewed off the old wood on my macrophylla, so not sure how many blooms I’ll get this year. I hope he doesn’t chew my new plants this year since we got him in October and all the plants were pretty much gone.
I bought a frost blanket to have on hand this year. What is the low temp that you think they should be covered? The lowest we’ve gotten so far is high 20s.
It depends if the buds are swelling and how the weather has been so far. We have been mild in 30s and 40s. When the temps suddenly fall to 10 degrees def time to cover.
Well, it depends on how mild it has been in your area. if it's been mild and suddenly swings to cold temps like that I would def cover. if the buds swell then no brainer - cover
She has a link to them on Amazon. If you don't know how to find the link, it's to the right of the title of the video... sorta looks like an arrow pointing down.
The things we do for our plants. You’re a great Plant Mama.😊😊🇨🇦
Aw! Thanks
Excellent idea 💡 I use wooden clothespins to hold the fabric in place.

Do you cover your hydrangeas all winter or just from late spring frost?
I have to cover my citrus here in zone 8 sometimes too.

I learned a new thing today, will cover up mine tomorrow definitely 👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you! Hope they are safe and sound.

Yes, I am going into reblooming as well

Yes! plastic is to be avoided. These let some air and moisture in and out so they breath.
Very practical... Thank you for sharing... Stay safe!

Thank you for this. I'm going out this afternoon to check my buds. 💚
Oh my goodness, I was too late to do that with mine! Fingers crossed!
Same here. Here’s hoping.
Great idea Yulia. I did that with burlap and lots of leaves a few weeks ago. I dont want to lose them either!! Maryland zone7a
I was too late it’s crazy cold here even in 7a with 22 mile per hour wind! Sunday to Tuesday will snow.🥶
I hear you! I’m in 7a and it’s cold!
Did you cover your hydrangea?
Me too
@@thebernsteinbears6137 i think mine is ok I have limelight and big daddy endless hydrangea I didn’t cover them I was too late I forgot.

She is in New Jersey.
Several of the comments came from Canada.
I am in NJ but we get cold sometimes 😊
Do I wait till the yellowed leaves fall off the plants to cover ?? Zone 5 NJ
This was a great informative video. It only came a day late! We already had our hard frost. 😩
You can still cover them if more cold to come.

I got too frustrated losing my macrophylla hydrangea blooms three years in a row, so I potted them all up, storing in a cold garage now
Yep, that works too

My mom and dad cover theirs just in case and they bloom beautifully
@@ydoyougarden If they survive I will do that next winter for sure!

Uhoh. I was hoping mine would bloom this year, and it has been so cold. I will have to see what happens.
Hi Yulia this is unrelated to the topic, but I have a question about your white raised bed. Did you put anything in the bottom of it and where did you got it from. I’m also in NJ and I’m glad I found your channel.
The raised beds are from Vita. They are great. there is nothing on the bottom of them. I just put them in and filled with compost and planted veggies!
Good luck hope the hydrangeas make it through. Drop us an update on the plants to see how they faired.
Will do!
Is this in the fall or early spring?
We are -40 right now and I would love to have your temperature.. I just hope all my hydrangea will come back this year..
Heads up yulia there's a cold snap coming your way. I think I live near you and Thurs and Fri night we are getting in the 20s again! Protect those hydrangeas!!
This was me but covering my palms. The first half of winter was going so well.
now I know why my big leaf hydrangea has never bloomed since I moved in 5 years ago. I am in zone 5b. Indiana.
I have the same problem! Zone 6a Kansas
If you are consistently losing blooms opt for newer varieties that bloom on new wood
What camera and set up do you use for your closer shots where you are demonstrating seed starting and walking around the garden showing the plants?
My iPhone 11

Until the weather is stable in the 30s 40s. If you are having consistent loss of flowers I would get the new varieties like Bloomstruck
Good info 👍
Wish I knew about this sooner
what do you do for blackleaf 3 of mine that bllom on old wood have the sooty mold on leaves
Need more info. Is it in the summer, now?
I only had one measly bloom on my Nikko Blue last year, but I think it was because of the deer. How do you know in spring if your plant has been frost damaged?
You will see the blooms not developing
My pup chewed off the old wood on my macrophylla, so not sure how many blooms I’ll get this year. I hope he doesn’t chew my new plants this year since we got him in October and all the plants were pretty much gone.

Hi . I'm in zone 7 MD. Do I have to cover too. Please let me know.
I love your videos.
I don’t think so, you are more mild
@@ydoyougarden you should do more of your every month garden tour like you use to do it.
Oh darn. Forgot to protect my plants. Now it is dark and cold out.
Nice
Are you doing any winter sowing this year ?
Yes! Started yesterday
Where do you buy frost blankets
She has a link to them on Amazon. If you don't know how to find the link, it's to the right of the title of the video... sorta looks like an arrow pointing down.
I have never heard of this before. We go below zero and never cover them i will say there is snow on top that might protect the roots
If they are covered in snow then they are not budding
👍❤️😊
In chicago 20 below zero, my friend doesn't cover them nobody do it here plus we get Tons of snow. And they bloom beautiful..so u don't need to..
👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
