    You’ve really articulated how I feel. We have yet again lacked empathy as fans, the one thing that Southgate was supposed to have fixed, that we could celebrate our players again, win or lose - when it was never his responsibility in the first place. The celebrating I’ve seen already from RUclipsrs and other new media people, I think is frankly rancid. I totally see why everyone thinks we so entitled now, really eye opening for me today.

    I think you're confusing Southgate's amicable personality & genuine attempts at making a difference with actual competence and ability to get the job done. The 2 (obviously) aren't the same. Harsh reality states that even if you are shorted from the beginning, the onus is on you to earn your way into changing peoples minds. He just couldn't manage that. It's not personal. Spot on about the English culture and politics aspect. At this point, if the next England manager is English there will be too much pressure to get it to work that the press will tear them to bits. The ONLY manager available right now that would build on the current situation, but also have the distance to be able to not succumb to the press, and let's face it, traditional english right wing exceptionalism is, as you have said, Klopp. Would he do it? He left Liverpool because the pressure was over the top. I'm not sure he'd want what the England boss would give him, sadly.

    Performance matters, not just results. If you’re going to lose in a final or semifinal, how you lose determines how fans feel about the team and manager. Going down swinging and coming up short feels better than going down the way southgate’s teams do, which to me is not playing to your best ability cause he wasn’t able to get them to play at an elite level. Praise his personality and leadership, but absolutely criticize his subpar tactics. If Spain would’ve lost the final, media and fans would not hound the team as much because they played well throughout.

    Some people are celebrating, yet they should hold their horses and be careful what they wish for.
    Southgate has raised standards and expectations. Under Southgate England has gone deep into tournaments. There is now an expectation to win and het to finals. If the next man doesn't qualify or get out of the group-stage, people will be crying out for Southgate in a few years time! There will have to be pragmatism at times, not all teams can merely be turned over.
    In terms of the new manager:
    If English, has to be: Eddie Howe or Carsley.
    If non-English: Klopp (though doubtful he would ever take, as he wants to relax, so no idea why his name is being constantly thrown into the mix).
    No way Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard. They have poor man-management and inter-personal skills.
    No way: the Argentian Pochettino.

    • @snaggiz
      @snaggiz 3 месяца назад

      @@pratosaurusrex1128I did. I just don’t agree with Lawrence. He’s clearly in his feelings about Southgate and can’t separate between Southgate (the nice guy) and Southgate (the manager). I don’t care that Southgate is a nice bloke who once spent a little extra time with Lawrence in an interview. It is irrelevant when judging his ability to lead a team that should be doing better than this. It doesn’t fundamentally change his very extreme and obvious shortcomings as a manager. He never had what it took to do the job well enough to bring a trophy to England.
      Just enjoying the “vibes” isn’t enough to compete with teams at the very top and if England had a manager who understood that, who had greater tactical acumen, then England would’ve won a Euros by now for sure. But they haven’t. And the reason is very obviously that Southgate lacked the bravery and the tactical ability to bring the most out of what is a pretty star studded team. England have had the easiest draw twice in a row and they’ve barely scraped it to the final. If they played like they have under Southgate on the other side of the draw, they’d get dumped out comfortably. The fans deserve better than a manager who despite all of the riches of talent around him, can’t make them play even remotely coherently.

    • @pratosaurusrex1128
      @pratosaurusrex1128 3 месяца назад

      @@snaggiz it sounds like you are as much in your feelings as Lawrence is, just about hating on Southgate rather than appreciating what he did.
      I share some of your core opinions on Southgate. At crunch matches he didn’t show bravery or tactical skills to get England over the line when perhaps they could have, and to some extent the talent of the squad has been wasted.
      But some of Lawrence said about Southgate is also true. As England fans we have this massive monkey on our backs about not winning anything and every tournament where the team underperforms the media and fans lay into the team and the manager. Southgate created an environment where that pressure was not so evident and it allowed the players to play more freely (I’m excluding this tournament because of course we were played negative football for almost all of it).
      He changed the culture of the international set up and that is something he should be given credit for, and we should be looking to keep with the next manager. England pre Southgate and France at times have shown that if you don’t have unity you won’t go deep in any competition. Let alone win it.
      So no. He is not a disgrace of a manager, but he is also not good enough to take England to the level they want to be. You can hold both those views.
