Considering your fancy gear, I'm surprised you don't have some sort of thermal imaging optics. Dead shorts often don't have much of a heat signature (since R=0) and therefore are hard to find by fingering the board.

I'm new to component level repairs myself, been working on MacBooks and random Laptops for the last year but decided I wanted to delve into cell phones, starting with Iphones. Anyways I watched this video yesterday, and funny enough I had an Iphone 6 today with absolutely no power. I knew it was most likely a short on PP_VCC_MAIN after having watched your video the night before... and sure enough that was it, a short on C1552 (singed my finger, lol) . Anyways, the detail and information you provide in your videos is outstanding, very easy to follow and straight to the point.

Thermal camera
Yes, while the handheld ones are a little pricey (~US $400-$1500), if you're looking for subtle heat sources, a thermal camera is the best option. If you get the right one, you might even be able to plug it into your video recording stream. Without a thermal camera, as this video shows, you're hunting in the dark.

Current and alcohol work just as well, but not as fast. But if he drops a couple grand on a thermal camera, how long will it take to achieve ROI? How many jobs warrant a thermal camera? If every job were a short like this then it may be worth it. If you’re doing one a week or so, I would submit it’s a questionable investment. It certainly is a “nice to have,” though.
Some of us are not wired for hourly/slave wage. lol Though you may work harder/longer hours you are better off working for yourself. Invest in your own business. As long as you're happy with the niche you have chosen then you should be set!

i always use freezer spray. it shows with 2-3 tries. even the smallest shorted cap.

allow me to interject that there are many of us who LIKE our jobs under a "boss". i do NOT consider it "paid slavery". I see the owner of the company where i work having to devote about 9 hours a day weekly and 4-5 on saturdays. When i punch out, i am OFF. he can be home or even on vacation and STILL be on call via his phone. so, yeah, to each his/her own..

37:40 "Why don't I get heat?” “... even with 5A?" --Heat correlates to the power that is dissipated in the component. Power is a product of current and voltage. As you can see the voltage drops to something like 0.05V, hence the product 5A*0.05V = 0.25W is indeed hard to feel as warmth. Assuming that you component fails with higher resistance say “shorts” to 1V and 5A. This would result in a 5W heat dissipation and very visible red glow even in larger SMD components.
These “true” shorts (very low resistance) are indeed hard to trace. Microohm meters can be helpful to some extent. Good job!
Sqeezerful or ice spray/thermal camera. I bought a thermal camera. Much faster and easier to spot shorts now.
Will the Atten ST-862D hot air station remove the Iphone CPU shield at its maximum temperature of 480 degrees celcius?

Tarik Guney it would but they’re expensive. Unless you’re doing specifically shorts every job or at least multiple times a week/month, they’re not worth it. It’s usually better to spend a bit more in one thing here and there to manually find the short than it is to spend $5k on a thermal spotting solution. Volts/current and alcohol on the board work as well and almost as fast
have check with shopkeeper, they told me motherboard broken but they are not sure for CPU chip IC has broken. They told if motherboard or CPU has broken no one can recover the data from this iphon.

Hi, 5 Amps means nothing. 5 Amps * 0.5 Volts = 2.5 Watts = low heat . 5 Amps * 4 Volts = 20 Watts = Heat. --- Now V = I*R --- Low R shortage = low V = Low Watts = Low Heat.

4 amps is huge man you will burn the inner lining pattern of the pcb which soon when its working will deteriorate on its own current. And that will be a pattern cut someday. But your doing a good money on that repair. Best of luck

Respectfully, it's the power not the current that determines the amount of heat. Power is current times voltage. So the voltage does matter. 2 amps at 1 volt is 2 watts. 4 amps at 2 volts is 8 watts. But when you're putting 4 amps in your power supply is reading .7 volts, so that's only 2.8 watts, not 8.
You are correct with your calculations of Ohm's law being why this board did not build up the sort of heat one would expect. It is because there just isn't any real power being consumed and is easily dissipated. But, you will not get heat without current. At lower voltages and higher currents you get more heat and just the opposite is true at higher voltages and lower current. That is why high voltage power lines are thinner in diameter than low voltage lines and produce very little heat. How many watts are they carrying? Of course they would still be subject to Ohm's law and the actual power being consumed in terms of how much the wire heats up, but, no amps = no heat.

High voltage lines? Surely you mean high current lines
But the very definition of a short-circuit is a closed circuit with no resistance. Since both rails are theoretically connected together, the difference in potential, or voltage, equals 0. But despite the voltage being 0, all the current available tries to flow all at once to the other rail, and this makes the current intensity, in amperes, infinite in theory.
So even a 0.1V can deliver insane amounts of power because the current will be as high as possible for the supply. So for all practical purposes, current is what we care for, since voltage is practically inexistent.

If you do this more than once a week get a thermal camera. You are losing too much time hunting. Time is money!
Do you know that the power is the current times the voltage? 3A times 0.5V is so much power - it will burn your hands dude :)))
And if you have short in the VCC, just put some current anywhere, you do not need to put it on the caps and guess a spot ... the electrons are moving to the short anyway :)

That bracket at 4:40 usually doesn't really need both screws removed. I only ever remove the screw that attaches to the housing, and keep the other one attached to the board

Hi Jason! What happen if only take that shorted vvcmain cap from the board and not replacing it and trying to turn the iPhone on? Does it turning on at all? I'm asking because I removed shorted vvcmain cap (C3220_RF) from iPhone 6 board which released the vccmain short. That was my first vccmain short hunting and I found that short on second cap, yayy! That was absolutely some kind of luck :D

I am a "repair" electronic engineer myself, spent twenty years in the game, a dead short(zero ohms) will not produce any heat, simple ohms law P = V x I. If the voltage across the component producing the short is truly zero volts(which it could be if it measures 0 ohms) then this is the formula populated P = 0 x 5A, therefore P = 0. What this engineer is trying to hope for is that the component still offers some resistance which would then produce a voltage drop across the component and P would no longer be zero and heat would be produced. Besides, at 5A you would be stressing out all the tracks on that board that would be super thin and not designed to carry that amount of current. What about using a sensitive fluke meter and measuring resistance ?

I'm new to component level repairs myself, been working on MacBooks and random Laptops for the last year but decided I wanted to delve into cell phones, starting with Iphones. Anyways I watched this video yesterday, and funny enough I had an Iphone 6 today with absolutely no power. I knew it was most likely a short on PP_VCC_MAIN after having watched your video the night before... and sure enough that was it, a short on C1552 (singed my finger, lol) . Anyways, the detail and information you provide in your videos is outstanding, very easy to follow and straight to the point.

You have could find the short in less time if you used the freez spray , it's like magic , I would recommend you to remove the VCC main it self first then connect a small wire with any of the VCC main components then connect voltage but don't forget to spray the freez spray, short will revel it self

I am developing electronics so hopfully I don't need this method, but let me contribute with some thoughts about why the cap doesn't get warm.
The last time you shorten your probes you got 4.13 Amps and 0.06 Volts.
This means the inner resistence of your power supply plus the resistance of your probes are 0.06 / 4.13 = 0.0145 Ohm.
Than you shortend the cap and the voltage increses to 0.07 Volts. That means the resistance of the power supply plus the probes plus the cap is 0.07 / 4.13 = 0.0169 Ohm.
So the resistance of the cap is 0.0169 - 0.0145 = 0.00245 Ohms. Thats a realy perfect short. It's like a wire.
The power which is consumed by this cap (the cap plus the wires on the board) is 0.00254 * 4.13² = 0.0417 W.
The rest of the power is consumed by the power sypply and the probes 4.13 * 0.06 = 0.248 W.
So your probes are getting warm but not the cap.
Conclusio: If you are using this method it is useful to also look at the voltage. If it is not much highter then the probe short, the error will be difficult to find.
But be careful. If the cap has lets say 1 Ohm the voltage will increase to 4.14 Volt and the power increases to 17W. This will pop your cap instantly.

Used the same method when looking for a short to ground in lighting systems on semi tractor / trailers years ago when I was a kid,,, If the short couldn't be isolated in a particular section or subsection of say lighting because of a pinched wire or a wires with melted insolation from welding near a loom,, a last resort would be to throw the 12VDC with about 600 amps that was in available in one of three or four batteries on the vehicle.
With about four people on all four sides of the unit we would listen, look and sniff for the smoke and sizzle because it was going to show very quickly,,, Too long and now you made more work for yourself.
I don't know shit about electronics repair but isn't there some device that uses thermal imaging to see hot spots on the board instead of using your fingers? The final word was, if I'd used freeze spray I would have found the problem sooner. How much does a can of freeze spray cost anyway? So if 5 amps would have fried another component, not already broken, would he have told the customer he made a mistake and the repair will cost more money or is now damaged beyond repair? Probably not.
why 2v to test vcc main and not higher, like 4 or 5 v ?

My iphone 6+ issues,
1. Mute turns on and off automatically while using. Mute switch not working.
2. Not charging normally "accy not compatible" pops up everytime i plug the charger so i do the turn off trick to make it charge even w/o charging indicator display.
3. Power button stops working, no sleep no turn off thats why i cannot charge the phone anymore.
4. Now its dead. Please i need an honest opinion whats wrong with my phone, whats the problem at what to be repair or replace..

Hye Jason. I have an IPhone 6 sent to me from other shop. When I look around the board, all the VCC_Main cap are removed, the reason this IPhone sent to me is because it keep showing temperature warning even not in hot condition. Before this the IPhone is a water damaged and it already power on, but the only problem is the temperature warning issue. Would you give some tips or maybe you can make a video about this cases. I've watched all the repair video on youtube, but no one have made a video about this case yet. Maybe you can be the first to make it. :)

Dude, why so suffer? you can simply plug in to the power supply Board and lodge 4.3 volts x 4 amperes, pre-treating with freezer, cut his throws instantly capacitor location! You are not looking for easy ways (((
Hey Jason.. I have a technical question.. I have an iphone 6s that turns on but won't charge.. the phone had a broken screen, I don't have much history on the phone as i just bought it to repair the screen but charging was not working before screen replacement anyhow, so i changed the battery and i am able to turn him on both via power button and lightening cable.. I changed the charging dock also but it won't charge..do you have any idea what could that be? I don't want to jump into replacing tristar or tigiris.. what do you think it could be..
Since the phone is turning on using the lightening cable so i believe the charging dock is sensing something or at least it is well connected..please help me and sorry for the long message
