This trip has changed my opinion of the new defender as I was rather biased towards old Land Rovers. Was great to meet you Simon and we all had cracking day, hope you enjoyed your happy birthday V8 sing song 😄
Last week, I had a filming assignment on a large construction site deep in the Japanese mountains. The previous day, we had very heavy rain which made the site extremely muddy and it was deep. I am very pleased to report that my Discovery 5 on its bog standard road tyres handled the mud in normal mode (I did raise the height, but it wasn't really necessary) without as much of a moan or groan. Not once did it slip or cause me any problems. Absolutely brilliant vehicle and it is a shame that more Discovery 5s are not used in this way. I felt very satisfied as my filming assignments take me to anywhere from a suave hotel to a stone quarry or construction site on a mountain with steep hills like last week. There is also the possibility that I will need to film a natural disaster such as an earthquake at some point and that might mean having to drive over damaged roads and fallen walls etc.. There was a large earthquake on the Noto Peninsula yesterday that caused at least three houses (old buildings) to collapse and sadly one person died as he was unfortunate to have been on top of a ladder when the earthquake struck. A tunnel has also collapsed due to a landslide and I'm hoping that no vehicles were trapped inside as this week is 'Golden Week', a series of national holidays bunched together meaning that there are a lot of tourists and people out for the day. Anyway, I digress. Good video Simon and it was nice to see my homeland of Wales.
Enjoyable video! Had the same problem with a torn factory sidewall a few miles into a Welsh greenlane soon after I got my 110. After a second puncture on a normal forest road I got sick of it and put some proper BFG ATs on it.
Good Vid Simon , when i saw the intro knew exactly where you were , can see the Hafod at the bottom of the valley from our place , glad you had a good couple of days
Hi Simon, nice ride with the new defender 👍, I would recommend buying a set of BFG AT tires. My cars stand on BFG AT for many years, and I also have an extra set rims with BFG MT. Never had a puncture or sidewall problem..... 😉
Geat video 👍 What you *do* need to develop for The Stig is a "rock slider footstep" - IE: rock sliders with a flattened top with a rubbe step. These will propely protect the side of the car and still allow easy access to the vehicle (and not get broken every time you go off-road).
Very nice video that shows off the capability of the 110 - I've been very pleased with my P300 as well. But you really should drop it into low range for terrain like that - it reduces the strain on the drive train and makes everything work easier. I put 265/70R18 BFG AT KO2's on my truck and its much better.
Just wondering what tyres you're using? The JLR factory Wrangler A/Ts don't have a kevlar sidewall and are prone to sidewall punctures from rocks etc. (Allegedly).
I cut a sidewall on my BFG KO2 and they are supposed to have tough sidewalls so nothing is bulletproof. I have read the Wranglers are a bit weak though.
Yes we were running Goodyear Wrangler ATs and the side walls look very weak now i look at them - have ordered some new tyres with Kevlar side walls apparently.
Late to this party..However great video👌👌👌👍. Great set of Lads. Some lovely old girls there. (land rovers). Just a shame you didn't get the drone footage🥺 Saw my first defender 110 in the flesh yesterday, Massive at the side of my L494 Loved it. However£££££££££ Toooo much for me.
Simon. Can you do a quick video to see how easy it would be to remove the rear quarter panel on the new defender? We like to use them off road and I know the doors and wings are pretty easy to change, but what if the quarter panel got a dent in it? People go on about how the old one was easy to replace bits and was wondering if all would be the same as the new one.
The "2" in the height means it's in off-road height 2 which is the default off-road height (provides 291mm of clearance). When you drive over 50km/h it drops to off-road height 1 which provides roughly 25cm of clearance. When you drive over 80km/h it drops to normal height.
There is a "hidden" extended mode if you ground out even at the off-road height. If you hold the button when grounded it raises a few more inches. Not sure if this is available in all regions or cars but that is how the LR guy explained it to me on my LR Owners Day of driving in Vermont. Wonder if that can be confirmed?
Cooper Tires has a RUclips video where they demonstrate that reducing tire pressure greatly reduces the chances of having a puncture in the tread. Nothing said about sidewalls though.
The sidewall seems to be the weakness of these tyres - i have ordered some tyres with Kevlar side walls ! The tyres are great for grip / noise / comfort / handling on road and off road - shame now i dont have confidence in them due to the side wall weakness.
Not the first time you lost a tyre off roading. At least you got the tyre changed much easier this time. George should have brought the Jimney to have a go.
Amazed you did that climb in high box - I have noticed the same with both my previous D240 and now with the D250 that I can go places off-road in high box that my old TDi300 would have been a bit stressed doing in low range! I would love to know JLR’s reason for programming the TR to default to Comfort (except when Rock Crawl, I’ve found) after you turn off the engine, I know at least two people who have done quite severe tracks in ECO by accident after stopping and switching off too, car seems to be able to handle it just fine though regardless of the TR program selected!
