- Crossing The Darien Gap - EP. 17 - Motorbiking solo in Panama and Colombia
In this video I make it through a few Panamanian monsoons to the old part of Panama City. Of course I had to explore the historic center and visit the Panama Canal. After all that it was time to make arrangements to ship the beast and myself to Colombia, since there is no road between Panama and Colombia (The Darien Gap).

Earlier this year in October 2022, I left Vancouver to ride solo to the most southern tip of South America and back. Well, solo until Buenos Aires as I will be joined by a couple of friends to complete the last bit. The plan is to ride approximately 25,000 kilometers through 16 countries. Wish me luck!

Nice!!
Thanks!
That causeway was built by a Brazilian company, later involved in a messy corruption case back home. But they can build quality stuff (or could, anyways). Also, Panama was my very first official assignment, back in 1995. Loved the place, even though it´s expensive as hell. Very friendly people and some nice beaches too.
Was great riding through the area. The history of all those countries is fascinating!
Very cool, thanks for showing this!
So the big question.. How much to cross?
I used The Overland Embassy who coordinated everything for me. Cost was about $1200 to fly the bike one way + another $80 for their man in Bogota to handle all the paperwork (well worth it). Flight for myself was separate. Hope that helps!
I laughed at 2;54 you are standing in front of my favourite gas station in Coronado, small world. I hope the rest of the trip goes well for you.
Thank you!! 😎
Exciting Maarten!
How much was the shipping, and the flight?
No problem. I used The Overland Embassy who coordinated everything for me. Cost was about $1200 to fly the bike one way + another $80 for their man in Bogota to handle all the paperwork (well worth it). Flight for myself was separate. Hope that helps!
