I can't believe you took a meat pie to the Forbidden City just for a size comparison with the doornails! I so appreciate the committment, but hope the meat pie was still as yummy afterward. Also I've done a guided tour there twice and was never told about the 81 doornail history. Thanks for the amazing history lesson!!

Me: Oh Amy is gonna talk about the 门钉肉饼, I hope she covers the origin of its name!
Me at 1:16: Yes she did it!
Me: Oh Amy is talking about the doornails in the Forbidden City, I hope she calls out that there are 9x9=81 of them!
Me at 2:17: Yes she did it!!
Me: Oh Amy says that 9 is the supreme number in the Chinese culture, I hope she talks about other stuff in the Forbidden City with 9 in a row.
Me at 3:30: Yes she did it!!! She even mentioned that the only exception - 太和殿 - has 10 仙人走兽s instead of 9!
Fun fact, their original practical purpose is to cover the protruding nails on the ridge. Also the 10th figure is a monkey while all others are different mythological quadrupeds.
Even as a life-long Beijinger and a Ming/Qing architecture enthusiast, I find Amy's videos so satisfying to watch!

Most people, Chinese included who don't live in the country truly do not realize how DIVERSE China is. Of China's 55 ethnic minorities, 52 have their own spoken languages and can not understand each other's languages without learning them. This is what the rest of the world perceives as ONE language (Chinese). With regional cuisines that are nothing like that of a neighboring region. And thousands of ultra regional dishes that are specific to one village.

Just to add to the door nail history, the reason why they put door nails in is that when/if the city or building came under seige. The flaming arrows that were to used to burn the wooden doors down would hopefully bounce off the shiny circular door nails and fall harmlessly to the ground. They were essentially a defense mechanism against seige.

I'm so surprised as well that chopsticks + opening up the pastry is the normal way to eat a meat pie in China! I'm also from Australia so this was quite interesting

    有点像上海的生煎包。20多年前在海淀魏公村吃过北京胖姐肉饼,是薄薄的大饼中间有肉,再切成小块,配小米粥吃不错。

Nine (九) in Chinese pronounce similar to long(久), they share same pinyin JIU, just the tone is a little bit different, so number nine becomes a symbol of forever(long enough). the emperors commonly use this symbol to represent themselves for the wish of their dynasty will exist forever. 81 is just 9X9, which means long X long, even longer.

Though nine 九 may sound like 久 (long) which most people may interpret it as longevity in a superstitious way but in very old wisdom it does has a cosmological significance to it. Check out the luoshu diagram or the magic square as commonly known in the west will give you some idea.

Do they come in different flavors meat pies? Like dog meat pie, pangolin meat pie, grasshopper pie, bat pies and other traditional wet market meats ?
