  • This is a video of Bagad Brieg's prize-winning medley performance in the final of the Grade Two competition at the World Pipe Band Championships held on Glasgow Green on Saturday, 16 August 2014.
Bagad Brieg is based in Brieg (fr. Briec) in Brittany. Bagads are common in Brittany and comprise bagpipes (binioù), bombards, and percussion including bass, tenor and snare drums. Bagads play Breton music and there are numerous competitions. Some Bagads also play as pipe bands and this band, and Bagad Cap Caval, are regular visitors to Glasgow and the World Pipe Band Championships. Bagad Brieg, led by Florian Droual, won the 2014 Grade Two Championship which was hotly contested by 22 bands.
The band wears traditional Breton dress. The national colours of Brittany are black and white so these colours tend to predominate in all Bagads.
    The band's medley was:
    Trevor Buckley (composed Don Bradford)
Frenchi's Jig (composed by Ladislas Klatka)
    Spice of Life (Don Bradford)
    Scott's Ballad (Don Bradford)
Rodney Hull QC (composed by Bill Livingstone)
Buntata's Sgadan (composed by Allan MacDonald)
Caledonian B-Line (composed by Bruce Gandy)
    Cosmic Reel (Ladislas Klatka)
Chase the Train (composed by Allan MacDonald)
This medley was controversial (for some people) in 2012 because it lasted a few seconds more than the allotted six minutes. After some editing it fitted just within six minutes this year. I also filmed the band playing this medley earlier in the week in Candleriggs. It started raining just as the band started the medley. By the middle the rain had become a torrential downpour. The spectators all ran for cover, but the band played on to huge cheers and applause when they finished. Such is Scottish weather that they were one of the few bands at the Worlds on Saturday to play in sunshine!
This is the actual prize winning performance, but if you want a better sounding recording have a look at Breton Bands in Glasgow [ • Breton Pipe Bands in G... ]
A couple of other interesting things. The band used electronic metronomes with an audible click to set the time (both in Candleriggs and here on Glasgow Green). The drummers also use the Physio Drum carrier, an ergonomic harness designed in Brittany.

Lorenzo Forconi Unlikely there is a huge gap between the very top of grade 2 and the very bottom of grade one, maybe in a couple of years though

Tom Hulbert This is an imaginary situation created by judges who don't have the balls to award the best bands the prizes they deserve!

Chase The Train seems very intricate for a band to play.
