First of all, Greg Coates is an awesome host for Thumping Thursday! Second, this Gibson EB-2 Bass is one of my favorites. I love the huge single humbucker pickup with the "Evil Tone"! And the bass boost switch is like the "Godfather of Active Electronics"!
Coates, Coates, Coates! Give him an extra day or at least EVERY Thursday! He’s great on camera and fully authentic. His enthusiasm plays out every time. Come on Norm! May most favorite day of the week.
I still have my 1960 Gibson EB2 blond/natural bass guitar, purchased new in London 1960. Whilst I haven't used it for a long time, I have great memories.
remarkable condition for a 59' and I luv that bass boost , what a great sound , just thumps and rocks , that's the kind of bass that stands out in a band , defines a song , and banjo tuners , far too cool. Great demo Mr. Coates , very well done
That boost circle might be nice for experimental use - maybe you can losen jammed screws with it😜. The natural tone is absolutely great on the other hand.
@@79thejman you wouldn't hear that same opinion from a lot of these Hi-Fi roundwound, active pickup guys. They'd say that it was "too muddy sounding and that he needs to crank his high mids up more" LOL
@@jeffkahl it's hilarious how those people who crank the treble on their bass claim "they want to be heard" when the actual key to being heard/standing out is occupying frequencies that other instruments aren't, which is usually low-mids!
To be fair, you should listen to all of the GOTD episodes with decent headphones or earphones. It's so much better! This guys such a perfect addition to the flock though. Great player & a great guy!
Interesting. @1:54 Gibson Mona-steel strings, made with an expensive, rather uncommon, nickel-copper alloy called monel. Very corrosion resistant, stronger than nickel.
The switch isn't a boost, it's a bass cut switch so it will sound like a baritone guitar. The huge fat sound is just what those pick-ups sound like way up by the neck like that.

I'm glad you've kept Greg around. He's a cool guy and a good player.
i know I'm kind of randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Demetrius Abel Lately I have been using Flixportal. You can find it on google :)
@William Madden thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it !!
@Demetrius Abel glad I could help =)

Geesh, that tone. It made me smile as soon as he started playing.

Greg is a funky God of Thunder!
Great job Greg .... Thumpin Thursdays !!!!!!!
What a beauty! And with BRW board!!
Wow, incredible guitar. Have a feeling finding a nicer one might be a difficult task.
Very cool, Greg. 👍🏻
Had one in the mid 70s in a red finish. Don't recall the year it was.
Great tone, excellent demo done here by Rutger Hauer from Blade Runner! Beautiful bass!

I must be in the minority where I like the wooly mudbucker sound. This thing is killer!
If you're in that minority group than so am I. That tone was damn crispy and the bass looks amazing

Such a great bass! I now know why people just go for these ones! So good! However! Gotta do a Maton!
Effing brilliant (!)
I bluetoothed this to a Bose Soundlink Mini and it sounded amazing.
Thumping before Flattopping
Great. Could be wrong but Jack Cassidy may have used one .

So it’s like a 335? With a center block
Dang Jen. What's up with the audio? Goes from bad to overdriven at 5:28.
Way too compressed

Anyone seen Carlos Guitarlos in the comments recently? Is he alright?
Wow
That's what I would call a 2x4 neck. That thing is massive, compared to a Fender Jazz bass neck.
That was good advice to wear headphones, my laptop speakers couldn't pick it up.
now thatza bass 🙆🏼♂️
Greg Coates saves the bass guitar!
Interesting to get the original price, I wonder what it is now.
I'm guessing around 10-15 grand...hey norm??
I watch these on my TV, I mean I would watch them on my phone but I can't because I'm an adult
Love this!!! 😆
👌
siiiick
I’m 65 and have 70’s concerts damaged low end hearing. I couldn’t hear the notes. I blame the Deep Purple Machine Head tour. Send money
Couldn't hear it because phone speakers aren't made for such tones...
Boy that’s the truth! When he turned off bass boost it sounded sweet!
Now that's sweet…
R u using any pedals or is it just through tha amp and if so what pedals and what amp?
Slight compression and a tube pre-amp through an SVT
I prefer the Epiphone Rivoli
Lol I thought he was Mark King of Level 42.
Lol you can make a mixed fruit shake just playing that thing near a fruit shop ..
Is it sold or still available? And what’s the asking price?
818-344-8300
It's on Reverb for $7,995.

Wow ya Sly Stallone can afford this I’m jealous that I can’t...but what a great sounding bass!

I heard the bass fine on my cellphone speakers lol you guys are just deaf. Sounds alot like an upright

Inaudible bass tone. Muddy.
Yeah, kinda warned you about that-definitely NOT for every gig…
