My dad played this in the 70s, I played it in middle-high school (the bass carried me in its backpack), and it still is hanging around parents' house in 2024. I better get it back someday!
Having your boy Greg do Thumpin’ Thursday is pure joy for us bass players. He does his own version of spec check, plays great and to the strengths of the bass, and even slides in his personal feelings about the instrument. Kudos, Greg!
Thumpin’ indeed. Greg now and Aaron earlier. Bass heavy today. Gotta keep everyone happy. It’s time to get the band back together. Edibles at Night is due for a reunion, please.
Greg's playing always astounds me! He is one of the best and most pleasant sounding bass players out there! Beautiful bass, imagine playing this one in a big room on full volume!
I remember when they first came out around 67-8 I think. I had a Framus Star Bass, and when I tried the neck it seemed like a huge 2x4, so I went with a Ventures model Mozrite.
The Fender that Sounds like a Gibson ,Seth Lover designed wide range pickup rite in neck position bot not as muddy as the infamous Mudbucker on the EB-0.
It depends what you want - you may find the pickup gets in the way and there is no high end "zing" available from this bass, but they're lovely instruments.
Really nice demo of a really cool Bass! Awesome Greg ! This coupled with Lemmo's earlier 'thumpin' Thursday' set with Aron the Bassist...sublime. 2 Bass videos in a day! Keep them coming! Santa Cruz Loves Norman's Rare Guitars! Heal Norm, heal! Much light, love, and wonderful thoughts. Michael, the Green Shoes were the Bomb. Seriously. Where do I get a pair of those?
I had one of those. Got it from the pawn shop. It sucked. Put a JB pup in it but it still sucked. It just felt like a 2X4. Amazing how much crap was made back in the day that people think is great today. It's just old and discarded.
Agreed, i got a '72 for $300 20 years ago, it was a dog, muddy pickup, sloppy ass neck pocket fit, crummy 3bolt neck tilt system. Now 20 years later Norm's is revering it like its a stradivarius and so sought after. Its CBS shit Norm. Rare because no one liked them and they got tossed.
Amenbrother!! I had one briefly in the late '70s. It sucked. Big green ones. Muddy tone, uncomfortable to play, and ugly with a CAPITAL UGH! Bought it for $60.00 when a local shop was going out of business. Got rid of it less than a year later for $75.00. Happy to get rid of it. With the possible exception of a Jazz Bass, I wouldn't have a Fender in the house. Been playing and gigging with a Carvin LB20 and a Carvin TBS Signature for the last 15 or so years. They totally blow Fenders out of the water.
4 piece body, so more proof the CBS accountants said," just use that scrap shit wood and try to make the new, improved '72 model. Yea,yea, yea kids'll love it, we think it will outsell the jazz bass in a couple years and we can discontinue that over-engineered beast."

One of the best bass Fender ever made.
Quote of the week, “Tone is heavy!’ Love it. Way to move the air Greg.
That was one of my favorite demos ever Greg 👍👍👍
Thanks man!
Holy shit! One the best bass demos I've heard. Incredible tone.
Thanks for the upload! .The bridge cover is facing the wrong way.Ya gotta turn it around! :)
Really dig Gregs playing ! / "A slab of tone". - Hit it boys!!!
One of the best basses in a bar fight. Sorry I sold mine.
In a bar fight?.... asking for a friend.

We ❤ Greg!!!
Greg the Hammer crushes it again!
Tone for days! Whoooo hoooo!
Turn the volume up!
Put your headphones on then and you will hear it a lot better
You have a volume control on your end
@@Ottophil my volume was wide open the problem was on their end!

Your happy energy makes them all sound good.😎 good job like always.
Did i win something
I had a ‘72 in Sonic Blue. (One of) the biggest mistakes I ever did was sell it.
I remember when they first came out around 67-8 I think. I had a Framus Star Bass, and when I tried the neck it seemed like a huge 2x4, so I went with a Ventures model Mozrite.
In the late sixties the model was called the Precision Bass it was kinda a reissue of the old early fifties model
Sounds So Good
Great playing and demo, thanks!
Almost sounds like a synth bass. Very cool! I want it.
🔥
Cool bass. Kind of odd though watching a Norman's guitar video and a Sweetwater ad pops up..
Finally a bass video where you actually can hear the bass 🙄
Greg Greg Greg Greg
I like fender bass guitars a classic instrument
I would listen to one note on this, sustained, before ever listening to anything on top 40 radio.
Thumpin Thursday with the marvelous Greg Coats ( spelling?ok) . Love the Tele bass. Sounds awesome. Crank it up a bit,please.. way to go Greg.
Coates😉
Lemming Rocks lol
. 😱lindo bass
The Fender that Sounds like a Gibson ,Seth Lover designed wide range pickup rite in neck position bot not as muddy as the infamous Mudbucker on the EB-0.
👌
So want to hear this on the dimed Ampeg with a fuzz....
how much does it cost? I'll buy it! The time is all we've lost! I'll try it! just an old song that popped into my head!
Sunshine go away today? Jonathan Edwards, one hit wonder......
Fuckin killer tone
Everyone take a shot, Greg is wearing another Soundgarden T-Shirt.
Surprised it’s not contoured. The earliest ‘51 -‘53 P Basses were not contoured but they got contours from ‘54-on.
Just soooo good! Greg Coates is kicking ass and taking names 👍🔥🔥🔥 #BagOfHammers
I have a 72 in mint condition blonde. I never play it and haven't played it for years I don't even know what it's worth these days maybe I'll sell
Is this bass ok for slapping? Not so sure about it 🤔
It depends what you want - you may find the pickup gets in the way and there is no high end "zing" available from this bass, but they're lovely instruments.
Go Hard Rock or Back Rock !
Buy that guy a different T-Shirt! Love you Greg and love the Tele Basses from the early 70s. RIP Dusty!
Shot three episodes with that shirt on 😆
@@gregcoates4281 yes I forget you are in Hollywood and the magic of multiple episodes shot in a single day… like a game show!
We need more bases
and you need another 's"...

How is Norm.. from SE Texas Bear 💜💯 Bass is great like a warm hot tottie, with honey, on a cold day fo sho!

Perhaps the player? Greg coaxes some Mojo out of it - just sayin"

My first bass. What a turd it was. I did have to get inventive to get a sound which helped me overall.

Y'all could have saved this for "Straturday"
don't be a hater! Upvote all the same!

Tub of stone.
Bass of moan.
Nice! Def a hefty bass!?!
It's funny how everybody wants it to have 'vibe' when it just sounds like sh%t
