A very fine performance. It must be very difficult to play but players manage it so well. Musically it is such a fine work and so beautiful. It is quite a contrast with his early Quintet or his late Sextet both of which are in a more traditional style. It is also available as a symphony. It is one of his very best works.
The jury is still out. I need more listenings to come to grips with the music. Thank you for exposing me to Pfitzner's chamber music. Just a thought - what would the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam do with Beethoven's Op.59? Again, thank you.
This is one of the great early 20th century Austro-German string quartets, along with those of Zemlinsky, Reger and Franz Schmidt. Pfitzner later orchestrated it and presented it as his Symphony in C# minor, Op. 36a. I like this, too, but I prefer the original quartet version (just as I greatly prefer the original sextet version of Verklärte Nacht). On the other hand, there's much to be said for the orchestrated (and transposed) version of the Chaconne by Franz Schmidt over the original for organ, although both versions are magnificent.
Wunderschöne Aufführung dieses technisch anspruchsvollen Meisterwerks mit perfekt synchronisierten Töne aller Streicher. Das ist Streichquartett!
I thought it was Quartet no 2. In any case it is an excellent interpretation of this very fine work.
Bijzonder repertoire geopenbaard!. Prachtig gespeeld.

Bravo! Fantastisch gespeeld. Een fantastisch kwartet. Mooie klankverhouding!
-- Excellente formation. Superbe Quartet à cordes de Hans Pfitzner. --
This upload has everything. A grandiose quartet, a magnificent performance and very good sound quality !
Sempre interessante poter ascoltare pagine del repertorio cameristico assai poco frequentate..
tre beau ,merci
The Dudok Quartet might to play Pfitzner's Quartet No 1 in D Op 13.
Having played this fine quartet Shostakovich's quartets would seem a good idea.
This is a string quartet for grown-ups.
È meno reazionario di quel che voleva far credere.

His other chamber music is in a more approachable style. This piece is such a masterpiece.
