Mike… this is one of your best videos. Really appreciate that it was all good advice without “promoting” any bait, or tackle. Don’t get me wrong… I completely get that you need to do right by your sponsors, and business is business. But it was truly refreshing not to be “sold” on anything this time around. Have a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Slowing down is probably my biggest problem because I like to stay on the move... oddly enough lots of times when I do finally make myself slow down that's where the stubbornness sets in and I get locked into trying to force something burning up tons of time. You hit the nail on the head with this one man!!!

I have found when I’m fishing a wacky rig that I pretty much have to re-tie after every fish I catch. Anymore I don’t even really check, turn the fish loose and re-tie because the line is almost always damaged with a wacky rig. I love this channel incredible down to earth information

I started analyzing every catch a few years ago. My success has improved a lot. Everything else you state is spot on. I fish the conditions or situation. It may be the same area but fish move, weather changes, and the fish may be behaving differently. This means using different lures or tactics. I see people use the same lure or color all the time. They wonder how I catch fish when they do not. I have the view if a lure or color does not work. Use something else even if to only practice a technique or try a different color you normally do not use.
P.S. love your videos. You keep the people thinking of the basics for success.

    GREAT advice!
A subset to fishing yesterdays fish is persisting too long with a bait you catch a bass on-ESPECIALLY if that bass was caught immediately after just starting. I call it the "jinx" bait. It's "caused" me to stay with a bait/color/technique/location FAR longer than I should have. I don't know why but bass seem to LOVE when you first tie on a lure. They'll jump all over it. But once that first bass is caught, they seem to want nothing to do with it.

Ike, probably one of the best videos I have seen in a while! I’m gonna re watch and write those things down, some I don’t do like dock talk, but others I do, if I write them down I’m more likely to not do those mistakes. I guarantee, if you do those things more often than the other guy, your return to BASS will be a quick return to the winners circle!

I always do this. You either get a book or two comments. I understand you far more than I did. I mean how do I get to know anyone over the internet. I was always a closet Bass Pro, but there were almost zero bass where I grew up, so trout and Salmon it was. If I was a youngster now I could see going to be a Bass Pro but I was born in 1957. Yes sir. Was pulling a jig through very grassy cypress trees on one of the best lunker lakes of the South. Every cast dragged a big clump of grass back. Pulled up after the first couple bumps, wad of grass. I started to just reel it in like the previous 100 casts but this grass clump was probably a 12lbs bass with bulge eyes and a hump on its back. Never got a good hook in before it went into low gear and got off.
Lol 30yrs of fishing (at the time) since I was 5 yrs old and got complacent. Oh well like dad said, "if I'm gonna be dumb, I'd better be tough" 😆

Mike great points and have been guilty of all of these as well and as many times they have happened, I still make them. The one that hits home the most is not SLOWING DOWN if i did slow down and been more thorough, i would not do the other 4 mistakes you have mentioned lol. I have typed these top 5 in my phone along with your statement "Never Give Up" as fishing is a mental game especially during tournaments. Fantastic video Mike! We all still do them all. Line checking & not re- tying are my worst. I would add that. I never place waypoints on fish catches. Only on cover/structure that can be verified on other trips with side/down & 2D. So no need to get rid of waypoints since it has nothing to do with fish catch history. Again, I loved this video and ALL your “In The Shop” series. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge with us. Oh, BTW, just saw the Zona episode with you guys on Erie. Loved it!

My old personal challenge, and I still do it is pick a stretch of bank, take a back pack with lures, maybe two or three rods and try to catch a limit that way. One time I was doing that at a local lake and the late Ken Cook was there in his boat. I caught and released five bass between 4-6.5 pounds while walking the bank, Ken’s wife was laughing as she watched……a great memory. I saw him catch two little 1.5 to maybe two pounders….flash forward 20 years, I have a bass tracker boat, 30 plus fishing rods…and still I often leave the boat at home.

We are all stubborn at times, some more than others. Check line and retyping is needed. And swapping rods every 30 minutes to an hour to give your line and knot a break also. Line gets more stretch and more backlashes. If you know you are going to use a certain bait have two rods with the same bait so you don’t have to change lures.
