I actually met Jason Statham once. In a late night Sainsburys in Clapham of all places. It was back 2011 and I found out later he was in London filming 'Blitz' and has a big house next to Clapham Common. Anyway, I'd been playing call of duty with a mate and we'd been puffing all day, by 11pm we had the right munchies, as you do, and I said lets get some microwave burgers from Sainsburys and do an all nighter with the bag of weed we had left. While I was deciding what to buy my mate jabbed me in the ribs and said clock that fella over there, its the fucking transporter. I saw a heavy looking geezer with a baseball cap on and his collar up. My mate said, thats only Jason fucking Statham. I'm looking and he's got a Dr Oetker pizza in one hand and a pappa john's in the other and he's comparing the ingredients, well, you would wouldn't you. I nearly shat myself. I told Terry, my mate, Im going to ask him for a selfie. His face was a picture, he looked like he was going to puke. He said, your fucking mad, he'll put you through that window! Come on, whats the odds your going to meet the transporter in fucking Sainsburys. No, I had to do it. I bowled over, tapped him gently on his arm and said excuse me Mr Statham, Im a huge fan, I dont suppose I could have selfie with you?
Well, blow me down, I braced myself for a smack in the mouth, but he pushed his cap backwards, looked at me and with a huge smile he said Of course not fella, come 'ere. He was an absolute gentleman, laughing and joking with me, he asked me what my favourite film was and of course i said the fucking Transporter, and he laughed and said that's what everyone says. He let me take half a dozen selfies and even posed putting his fist next to my face, it was the most fantastic moment I have ever known.
When I put my phone away and thanked him he said to me, By the way, you can call me Jason. Now, maybe it was because I got caught up in the moment, but without thinking I blurted out, Thank you Mr Jason.
His face went to concrete and Im thinking what the fuck have I done. He stepped forward and jabbed me hard in my chest with his finger and said 'You're a funny guy.'
I still can't remember if it was my mate Terry or the Angels who carried me floating out of that Sainsburys.
