I think the boldness of the beat was intended to move you, somewhat like the older southern Gospel ways did. Although I see both sides I think we need to be careful of how others could perceive us and also I think one needs to fully comprehend the concept of those Deep moving Southern Baptist hymns before trying them out.
I hear nothing disrespectful or un-spiritual in this rendition of this old favorite. I am more familiar with it as a child's song, with simple chords and a few gestures or sound effects on the beat to help children learn more about rhythm and counting in music, as well as the message of the song. I know that there are some Christian denominations that disapprove of drums, guitars, and rhythm instruments, in general, while singing in church, but I say, let that Light shine wherever and however you can reach people who need it to light The Way and lighten their burdens in song about Jesus. Our choir is doing this for Epiphany, and we look forward to letting loose a bit of the emotion that a number of mainline hymns do not encourage. The important essence, however rendered, is that we each have something good to offer the world; be happy about it, and share it with others. I think Joss Stone has done a pretty good job of that, with this song.

You cant change a song just because you dont like the text. Then you could just as well make a new song but dont call it "this little light of mine" because its not! You cant destroy classis like this thats just plain wrong!
