What's your Go-To Documentary Camera and/or Light???
EVA1 + GH5s on a speedbooster
I usually use my Sony a7sii which is perfect for run and gun shooting! :D
Trying out the A7Siii for the first time on an interview here in about three hours. Previously it was the FS5M2.
FX9 (with eye auto focus, thank you v. 2.0.1) and Aputure 120d.
Fuji X-T4, Viltrox lens 23mm f1.4, Aputure 120D MKII with its light dome.
I absolutely loved the Aperture chair bit
Mark you mentioned funding a bit - I would be interested in seeing a full video on funding, how it works, where you look for it, what your pitch process is, etc...
When filming is everything to you, you got to have lenses in the kitchen xD
So good and interesting! thank you Mark fo sharing this BTS. Enjoyed it!
Enjoyed the Terrence Malick reference, love his work.
I just found you a couple of weeks ago and really like your content. So refreshing to have a channel that’s not about the person, but the work. And your work is excellent.
I started with your first video, and am now up to “Behind the scenes of Documentary Filmmaking. On set.”
Would like to more of your perspective on this, a behind the scenes of an actual interview. For example, an interview with a metal sculptor. Research, prep notes, how the interview flows, with flubs, stops, gems, repeats, everything. Just to get a feel for what that’s like. Then a quick edit - the story, the best takes, and whittling it down. What you’re looking for as it comes together.
Keep up the great work, and best of luck.
You’re the man, Mark. Love watching these, feel like I’m part of the team on set!
love it! that's the goal!!
When I saw that they were low key cruising in a Porsche I knew it was out of my realm. TAke care.
Mark drove a Focus for the first ten years :) I know I sold it to him
I LOVE your content! Your tips, advice and insight have taken my documentary journalism work to the next level. Keep the great content rolling!!
Hey Mark, I recently happened to came across your channel and have been watching so much stuff on regular basis. Thanks for sharing valuable inputs on filmmaking. Much appreciated. Keep going !!
Yes!! So excited to watch this😎😎
I literally put my camera in my daughter's car seat too! So glad I'm not the only one! lol
Thank god some good, interesting content that is not a gear review (even though I eat those like candies....). More videos like this one please :) Thank you for sharing this slice of a day !
I'm currently doing my masters in TV journalism and I've learned so much from your videos that helped me get my work to another level!
♥️♥️♥️
Mark thanks so much for this video. So insightful to see how you work as a DP as well as your process when it comes to lighting. That color grade is looking insane! Best of luck to you!!
Thanks Viktor! Glad you're liking it. Can't wait to show More BTS!
Major flex in the Porsche.
Thank you for all your content man 🙏🙏
I absolutely love your taste in lenses. 🙌🏼
Amazing video and content dude! I'd like to see more vidros like that, I aprecciate and thank you for share your experience!
Love love these! Always such practical real world tips! Plus I enjoy the normal pacing of your videos. Not all the craziness and wick cuts of some of the others refreshing fo sho! Oh yeah. #gimmedatgimbal brother! Lol
I preordered the chair! Can’t wait!!!
Thank you so much for making this video!
The sigma chair had me cracking up man! Great video!
#GIMMIEDATGIMBAL
I'm a huge fan of the floating camera style, just seems a lot more organic. And oh Mark, #givemethatgimbal
I’ve always wondered what behind the scenes look like! Thanks for this video!
Glad you enjoy it:) thanks mate!!!
Mark and Michael! We’re really enjoying the fs7’s down here in the south haha. Really cool to see this process!
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 I hope those Fs7’s are serving you well
Solid things happening here! We just worked on a van life short doc story for a brand that wants to highlight cool stories in the community. Fun things!
Mark, you are a legend
Love the kitchen cabinet lens storage ;)
Loved this BTS video! Keep them coming. When you grabbed the 35mm and the 50mm, I thought yes! 35mm is my go to for interviews with the 50mm for close ups. #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
18 year old aspiring documentary film maker. I am in the process of filming a documentary on the unknown challenges of the homeless population in Boston. I am a complete self-starter and have no funds for a gimbal but it could really help me out!! #GimmeDatGimbal !!!! Love your content.
Firee tips🔥🎬 thank u Mark!!
Really liking the colors out of that FX9!
Always, always, always love BTS stuff.
I like that you take the time to talk about the stuff that most pros sharing on RUclips cover with "Yada, Yada, Yada".
Oh yeah, and #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
this is great, thank you!
You, sir, are a gifted talent and thank you for teaching your skills!
I LOVE the music before you arrive idea, I'm going to try this on my next car review, to fully feel the edit before it's even been shot! Genius!
Also that Sigma Chair had me fully laugh out loud on my own, that's not as common as I wish it was hahahaha!
Thanks and keep it up!
Thanks mate! So glad you enjoyed the video 🙌🏻🙏🏻
This vlog had sweet sweet chair vibes 🔥🔥
So glad I found your channel 😎
How do you get your talents comfortable in front of the camera? I find most of the time people tend to act unnatural when they have a camera pointed at them. I feel that having that raw natural reaction and emotion is a big part of what makes a documentary.
You must spend lots of time without the camera around them and then also film them lots when it doesn't matter so they get used to the camera being around. Use the sandwich schedule, I talk a bunch about this in some of the documentary videos I posted back in August :)
@@markbone Thanks for the advice! Will definitely check em out
He puts two high powered led lights right in their face. No wonder he makes them open up and cry. They are clearly panicking.
The sigma v2 chair just killed me 😂🤣🤣 #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
Great to see Mark go up in the grand scheme of things and see him get sponsored by Ikea!
Need to carry your camera in your car? Use the Bæbë car seat. Need to store your lenses? Use the Kïtchën kitchen cabinet! But don't forget the most forgotten piece of gear! The Sigma chair! 🤣🤣
haha! I need that IKEA MONEY! LETS GET ME SPONSORED
@@markbone Film an entire documentary in the Ikea showrooms... that'll probably do the job? It isn't quiet though and I doubt there are chairs as good as Tyler's...
Loved how you lit the subject in this. Moody lighting for a doc definitely sets the atmosphere. These videos are great! #gimmedatgimbal
Thanks T!!!!
Definitely one of the best channels for film makers keep up the good work. #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
For a moment I thought ‘oh maybe that’s a type of chair that’s completely silent and that you can buy for shoots’...
Haha didn’t think you’d need a chair for documentary filmmaking 😂 #gimmedatgimbal !#GIMMEDATGIMBAL
Hot damn! That’s a beauty. Great all around vid. 🇵🇷
haha that BH skit. This was awesome. Working on a new doc in a few weeks, stoked you guys shared some more BTS. #GIMMEDATGIMBLE
great! Happy to see how the process is going on and the efforts behind each filim #gimmedatgimbal
Please make more of this BTS and maybe cover lighting in outdoor spacing(backlighting…). Keep doing the great work !
I’d love not to stop drinking coffee before an early morning shoot so, #GIMMEDATGIMBAL !!
Mark, I really don't know what to say because I think you hear it always but I enjoy your content, and having the perspective from someone who does this for living really helps me out to understand better this filming world. Thanks for all that! By the way... #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
that's actually a really cool insight about making that trailer specifically for the pitch. Love seeing the process! #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
Yeah! Trailers are often over looked but they're so so important
What a coincidence, I'm shooting an interview for my first feature documentary tomorrow. Kinda nervous tbh. 😬 Wish me luck, y'all! #GimmeDatGimbal 😅
Good luck brother
Good luck! Where can we see it?
How did your interview go?!
18 year old aspiring documentary film maker. I am in the process of filming a documentary on the unknown challenges of the homeless population in Boston. I am a complete self-starter and have no funds for a gimbal but it could really help me out!! @ !!!! Love your content.
Just a beautiful looking interview...
love the colorgrade man
Absolutely needed this for a new project!! Thanks Mark ✌🏽#GIMMEDATGIMBAL
#gimmedatgimbal great videos man. The one stop shop for documentary tips.
I love how your office kitchen is where the gear is stored. Cooking up some buttery footage. #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
Also, I am completely on board with the no-lav in interviews position. Boom it well and there won't be all the extra noise from clothes and bumping that happen no matter how much I think we buffered it.
And how do you know I shared it? I just copied the link to share on my business FB.
@@namonty4 We just circle back with the winner and get them to verify the share/ our team checks in on all the sharing and yeah... we are cooking up some lovely footage in that kitchen
I love your colors great documentary. Do you have any videos how you color grade your footages? And what was the Kelvin use for indoors?
"Honey, where'd I put Sigma 35mm?" "In the Kitchen cupboard, next to the coffee mugs". (new sub) #gimmedatgimbal
This is Great
Shooting my first doc in a couple days and this video was perfectly timed! #gimmedatgimbal
Didn't expect you guys to pull up to a documentary shoot in a Porsche Panamera lol! Added to the filmmaking wishlist! :p
It's part of "what's in my bag"
Love it 🇲🇦🇲🇦
Very informative and interesting video! Love to get a BTS Look at what other filmmakers are using!
Glad you liked it! Should I make more of these?
@@markbone Yeah for sure!
Excellent content!
Just preordered that Sigma chair, thanks!
😂😂😂
This was an extremely useful video, man. One question though, when you conduct your interviews to what degree do you tend to direct your interviewee and the line of questioning? You mentioned briefly that people tend to ramble when you go in without some kind of structure, but to what degree do you relay that to your subject before shooting? Thanks for doing all these videos, they're an amazing insight into how you do what you do.
Appreciate that video
So much inspired all the way from south african 🇿🇦 #gimmedatgimbal
Hey Mark, Michael & Tyler Just finished MOD 1 of AOD & am always glad to see more of your content here on RUclips... I was surprised by the choice of having the Subjects eyes so deep in shadow... very dramatic choice.... btw... Please #gimmedatgimbal Thank you
More of these!
Sick! Will do!!
Thank you!
Awesome video! When you do the floating style as a complement of the main camera, do you film the whole interview too? Or just pieces of it, since the main camera will get the entire interview anyway?
Film the whole thing :)
Love the lighting setup for the interview. #GIVEMEDATGIMBAL
Awesome tip on house lamps as practical lights. I have figured this out(boost the key light, so the lamp in the back can appear dimmed), what i did not know is that you can actually place the light so close to the subject. I will try this!
#gimmedatgimbal
MARK! Love your channel and I have learned so much from it. I just picked up an FX3 and I need to get an XLR/Shotgun mic. Currently shooting with the Deity V Mic D3 Pro which will work in the interim but I’m curious which microphone you would recommend. I shoot both indoors and outdoors so looking for one that’ll work in just about any situation. Again, thank you annnnnnd #GIMMEDATGIMBLE.
Thanks Mark. Very informative and inspiring. What's the app you used on 4:39 for lighting check? Cheers.
The sigma chair had me dead😂 I love these BTS videos! #gimmedatgimbal
Great! I'm gonna be making more :)
Do you use an external recorder like an Atomos Ninja V or Shogun 7 and is there any difference or benefit of using one without the extension kit since im not needing raw?
My concentration on this vid is so high, feel like I’m part of the team on set
#gimmedatgimbal
Love it! Makes me want to make more videos like this
When filming the side hand held shot, what side to you choose to shoot from? The side of the key light so the face is bright? Or is it best to do what side you did. The darker side with some key features highlighted by the key light?
Love your content Mark! When shooting your B-cam handheld like that, how often are you switching between subjects head versus their hands or body language?? Just kinda go back and forth for options in post I assume?? Keep up all the good work!! #gimmedatgimbal
You have the best advice tidbits. Just got 3 Sigma lenses. Ready for my 3rd short. #gimmedatgimble
Yeass Jayne!! Can’t wait to see it
Yooooo great video as always, bless for the constant updates... #GIMMEDATGIMBAL
Hey Mark,
thank you for this BTS! I am considering buying either the FX6 or FX9 but can not decide. Is the FX9 still up to date today or should I wait for the new version? The FX6 is currently not available and it looks like it won't be for the next few months.
Hey, can you tell me that where all the documentaries directed by you or assisted by you in the production part are available
how do you go about the actual interview with the talent? Awesome video man!
New subscriber. Thank you for these BTS vids and the others providing a wealth of information. I’m learning a lot from your channel, I can’t wait to apply everything I’m learning to my 1st doc film ever. Keep it up 👍🏼
#gimmedatgimbal
Amazing! Go crush it Pablo! So exciting you’re shooting your first doc
Hey, quick question: do you use autofocus for the A cam on sticks or is there someone operating it?
Nice vid' Mark, cheers from France :)
#GimmeDatGimbal
How do you select the color style for each documentary? It can be difficult to get a "look" in documentaries because most documentaries don't control costumes and props... I hope you got what I'm asking... Idk...
#GIMMEDATGIMBAL Thanks for all the amazing tips (particularly the video about Shutter Angles changed my life). Absolutely loving all the quality content coming out of this channel.
Did you match the Kelvin to the lamps? It looks like you may have set your lights a little cooler for that color contrast. Just trying to learn! Thanks
Mark whats the name of that sunlight app again? I was trying to find it the other day for a shoot and couldnt!
SunSeeker
I see there no problem grading the footage when you using two different cameras. What picture profiles were these both shot on? For the interview
Looking forward for tomorrow night No Country is an Island ! #gimmedatgimbal
Yeasss!!
Love your videos. Do you use Signa art lenses on the fx6 with an EF to E adapter or are the native e mount?
Native e mount
@@markbone Thanks! I'm considering the FX6 but right now I have an bmpcc 4k with some canon lenses and a metabones... its a big investment to make the switch!
Thank you
hey, what was the app you used to see where the light was going to move at 4:41?
Sunseeker!
