Finally, a channel that focuses on the core of all of this, storytelling! I sure hope you can avoid making this a gear review/cinematic b-roll only channel, although it seems that's what gets the views. Stories are the real heart of it all and there are not enough resources on storytelling! Fascinating and thank you for creating this channel! Btw, despite watching hundreds of hours of youtube, this is the first time I've been so moved as to comment. Great stuff!

There's an UncoverDC article to teach how to make political documentaries ... Title is "Becoming a Big-Time Activist with a 20 Buck Movie Editing Program" ...
Thanks so much!! We have always stuck to short-form stuff, but I'm looking forward to branching out. In case it's helpful to anyone, I typed up the info from the video: Cinema Verite - Filming only what unfolds in front of you Docu-drama/Reenactment - Recreating past events in place of b-roll Talking Head - Only interviews Expository - Designed to re-tell an event or persuade people on an issue. OMG!!! JUST went and watched finding Vivian Mayer!!!!! thank you sooo much for this recommendation!!! it is fascinating watch!! I didn't want it to end! what a story of life! what great documentary !!!!
Great information. I had no idea there were this many styles of documentaries. I'd seen a couple of these styles in the past but didn't know they had specific categories. I'll be using at least 3 styles in an upcoming short documentary I'm planning to publish in Jan 2023. Thanks for this great insight!
I love this documentary series. I never really fancied documentaries but now, I feel so pumped to go and make my first. Update: I just filmed my first documentary over the weekend. 🤸🏽♀️
I just discovered your channel today. I'm a young compositor and video editor that just got into filming. I Just wanted to say thank you for your channel, your content and your work. And out of all things thank you for sharing your knowledge, experiences, and techniques.
Thanks Mark for this! I'm soo glad there is a channel about documentary filmmaking with a creator who does documentaries. Great video, great tips! Greetings form Poland!
This is incredible information!!! I have read a couple of books on documentary films but you have taken it to the next level!!!! Thanks for making this!!!
So I have an orphan illness that only effects less than 100,000 of us right now and it’s been a massive struggle for us, I’ve always loved film making, photography and anything to do with a camera but never had more than a go pro 😂 but recently for my 30th birthday this year I told my self I wanted to make a documentary film about what we struggle with on a daily basis, I have no experience in film making or let alone using a great camera beside so many hours behind tutorials but I’m gonna take that leap and try to learn! Gonna interview a bunch of fellow strugglers with this illness and give it my best! Thanks for all your information, these videos give me a lot of motivation and inspiration to start! Thanks so much!
I'm a fan of NYT's Op Docs. They are generally very short by different directors on different types of subjects and can offer a lot of inspiration on a variety of approaches.
OMG so much! This channel is going to explode soon :) I am really glad, I am with you since the beginning of your journey man! For a beginner here, understanding this is something!
Found you by accident and could not be happier! Instant sub. I've been looking for this genre. I'm new to filmmaking but I've been doing travel photography for many years. I'm frankly tired of all these "cinematic " travel vids since it's all about back flips drone shots and half naked women. I think this genre is what I've been looking for for travels

Thanks for this Mark - I’m currently writing my university dissertation based around the styles of documentary filmmaking, and this was really helpful. Enjoy your vacation!
WHERE in Florida?? I get so hyped when anyone comes to my home state... I'm based on the Gulf Coast of FL. I hope you had a good vacay. The Amish folks around here ride those tricycles a lot! Thanks for the awesome video, very up my alley. It's great to know that's where the rest of your audience lies as well.
Hi I’m a documentary photographer getting deeper into filmmaking thank you for this great video and thanks for mentioning Vivian maier! I teach my young photo students about her she’s amazing and the doc is great! much love!
Dude this is awesome! I’m currently working on two docs, one is Called Passion For Story and it’s actually about me and how I figured out over the years that filmmaking is what I’m passionate about, and the other one is called Coffee People and it’s about the passionate and creative people of the third wave specialty coffee movement.
My self and a friend went out last month and shot our first documentary. It turned out so nice. I can not wait to shoot more. We have a topic. I do political and motivational art. The films that we shoot can be scene by scanning the art piece or going to my RUclips channel. When it gets warmer, I think we will shoot more.
I'm aiming to create my first documentary next year. I'm literally setting that as my 1 videography goal if I do nothing else next year. This video series has been really helpful to give more of a direction with how I want it to turn out, so thanks man. Currently, I feel like the docu is stradling 3 genres: Talking heads, Expository & Participatory. I look forward to watching the rest of your videos 👍
I've been binging your channel this week! Really enjoying the videos and your insight. We're all on a journey, thanks for giving us the honor of glimpsing yours!
Hey man, thank you for taking the time out on your vacation to deliver some value! Really would love to keep diving into the documentary niche. Maybe a video about how to follow a character in a documentary, or how to outline or plan for your documentary. Thanks man!
The first thing that grabbed me with your video is the fact that you are riding and yet there is no wind or vehicle sound. It looks so "eerie" for want of a better word. lol What did you use to capture your audio?
Thanks Mark, just writing my next script, really appreciated the insights. I do travel docs, in the style of “come with me and experience a place” - so I get double the fun! Paul
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for in regards to making a documentary!!! Thank you for making this video and sharing these styles along with your personal thoughts!
I am looking for an independent documentary filmmaker who is looking for a project that is completely absurd but has all the signs of becoming a surprise cult classic. However it’s difficult to align with most filmmakers due to their own stylistic vision so I really just need to learn to do it myself. Thanks for the videos.
As a film lover and a person who has been planning a doc on my own lifes path this was great..I think a mention of Werner Herzog woulda been nice as he has been a inspiration for many
My favorite documentary is Yard Boys by Marcus Johns, it’s really great. The story is really good the cinematography isn’t too good- highly recommend a watch(you can find it on RUclips)
I have such respect for you and for the work you do and how freely you share really great stuff. I'm Definitely going to use this video when I start my documentary work after my equipment get a here. I need your advice though. Trying to pick your brain on something. What would you buy first in this scenario. I have an old iMac that still works but is really slow with exports e.g 15+ hours for a 17minute 1080P video in premiere. I mainly shoot on my phone but for some jobs I've had to borrow a camera. Would you first buy, a camera or upgrade your editing rig? It's my current dilemma.
Talking head/Expository are what I dream of doing.. the best examples are the Zeitgeist and The Secret documentaries Did I put those in the correct categories?🤔
I enjoyed watching this. I think a good reason for making a documentary is that you can do everything on your own (if you can think of a topic). I made a four hour RUclips documentary (Kamakura - Rise and Fall of the Shoguns) as a year long project, and I could do it when and where I chose, at the drop of a hat, because it was a solo project. I am not sure many, if any other genres allow you the same freedom.
I will look into it . I did check it out . And I will be coming ur way soon around Nov jan. Running a small independent tv network doesn't leave me alot of time . But I swear u guys are number one .
I wanted to start my journey with documentary filmmaker but I am 43 years old now it’s so flat out to start it. What the best first steps to make it real please
I was literally typing my Doc. recommendation, when you jumped in and said Vivian! Spooky. She was def. an interesting person that truly did her art for her own reason? I guess? meaning not for money or fame.
Interesting video! I made a documentary a while back on Amazon prime. It's called 'Life's a Beach' and follows the unfolding story of a man who builds a house on a beach. The documentary originally perused one direction, but through the 18 months of filming and evolving story it ended as something different.
Finally, a channel that focuses on the core of all of this, storytelling! I sure hope you can avoid making this a gear review/cinematic b-roll only channel, although it seems that's what gets the views. As a RUclipsr, I can say this documentary making series is GOLD. Thanks Mark for explaining with so much clarity.
Thanks man!!
I agree! I'm in the process of shooting an interview/documentary and it's my first ever, but I think it will turn out epic just because of his tips!

13dcl you’re welcome!! Trying to help people go pro and not just make travel videos 😬
I had to pause and give you a high five for calling out "The Corporation". An amazingly underrated film, and so well done for the time.

The first thing that grabbed me with your video is the fact that you are riding and yet there is no wind or vehicle sound. It looks so "eerie" for want of a better word. lol What did you use to capture your audio?
Tony Rush I’m just using a rode mic with a wind sock

Thank you!!
Human The Movie is my favorite documentary so far, it classifies as a talking head documentary in my opinion. You can view it on RUclips.
Loved the "Overnighters", great doc!
Great suggestion on Worm Wood! Started watching it with my wife and were addicted!!!
Aaron Meyers yeah it’s a great series man!!
Your way to speak it’s discover how it’s pretty job and professional you are coming with
Talking head/Expository are what I dream of doing.. the best examples are the Zeitgeist and The Secret documentaries
Did I put those in the correct categories?🤔
Winged migration and Koyanisquatsi as well as home, for me are impressionistic documentaries. And among the best.
Amazing vid! I’m excited to see your growth in the near future 🙏🏽
Kadre Rasheed me too 😬😬
Super helpful. Thank you very much!
You have so right. Nice work!
Great video. I’ve been looking for good entertaining breakdown of documentaries. BTW we hang out in our backyards. So nobody is in the front yard.
Felipe Caraballo you’re totally right! Because I’ve been in the backyard ever since I got here besides to make this video haha
I enjoyed watching this. I think a good reason for making a documentary is that you can do everything on your own (if you can think of a topic). Very nice Mark - and I could tell you were from Canada by the way you say 'out'.
100% I can’t hide that accent 😂
Thanks for this . About Todo a 8 week course on documentary
You should join ours instead theartofdocumentary.com it opens back up in 3 days. And you get lifetime access
I will look into it . I did check it out . And I will be coming ur way soon around Nov jan. Running a small independent tv network doesn't leave me alot of time . But I swear u guys are number one .
Trying to film a mockumentary but either way it was quite helpful
I wanted to start my journey with documentary filmmaker but I am 43 years old now it’s so flat out to start it. What the best first steps to make it real please
I can learn alot from you thanks mark
That bike makes me think you should pitch the scraper bike guys in Oakland on a documentary
Ross Bodenmann - Art Director haha!
I was literally typing my Doc. recommendation, when you jumped in and said Vivian! Spooky. She was def. an interesting person that truly did her art for her own reason? I guess? meaning not for money or fame.
Oh man, I needed this video today. Great stuff and I like the trike lol
Thanks for the info. I think my documentary will be Talking Head/Impressionistic/Reflective combined. Have you ever seen that?
Absolutely! You can combine any of the,, there are no rules
i thoroughly enjoy your content
Interesting video! I made a documentary a while back on Amazon prime. It's called 'Life's a Beach' and follows the unfolding story of a man who builds a house on a beach.
