    Classic Doctors would occasionally meet up with each other like this. Usually one or more would recognise each other immediately (depending on the chronology). For classic fans this was an excellent trick as we would have recognised this trope and expected it to play out as before.

    David Tennant was just born to be the Doctor. It helps that he's wanted to be an actor and play the Doctor since he was something like three or four years old. This role was the reason why he became an actor.

      I always wondered this but where would the entrance to the tardis be if it disguised itself as a hot air ballon? I don’t know if they explained it in classic who or not. Would the door be placed on the ground of the basket in the hot air ballon or a door right in the middle of the basket?
      How ever it works, at least the perception filter will keep anyone from wondering why someone just has a door in the middle of their hot air ballon.

    And we're into the specials! Starting with a solid, fun episode and the return of the cybermen!
    Jackson Lake's character arc is great, albeit really quite sad, but it's nice that he gets to reunite with his son in the end, and go on with life having had a taste of the Doctor's world!
    I love that this time the Doctor finally gets all of the thanks and appreciation that he never once asks for every time he saves the day! He could probably use a bit of cheer after last episode.

    • @JoeThornhill
      @JoeThornhill 3 месяца назад

      It's actually not all that solid, I'm afraid (which actually fits with most Christmas specials, lol).
      This is all just paraphrasing a video by 'orowen', but it's still true.
      At least with the Cyberman storyline. Never mind the fact that it abruptly interrupts the great and somber reveal of Jacksons story, near the end. It's another example of a writer not really understanding them.
      Instead of forcing all the people to be converted into Cybermen, the king ends up just killing a bunch of them by destroying London. They don't even convert the children, once they've got the king working.
      Because that's all the Cybermen are. Not aliens, warriors or monsters. They're just us. Wanting to take away all our pain by making us into them.

    • @gazzamanazza4pm
      @gazzamanazza4pm 3 месяца назад +1

      @@JoeThornhill Meh, I still have a good time with it. I wouldn't call it bad even if it's hardly a masterpiece like some episodes of this show.
      I should say though, regarding the Cybermen going on a destructive rampage once the King awakens - they were under Hartigan's control at that point, so they weren't following the standard cyberman operating procedures of taking people for upgrade. I guess Hartigan wanted to crush some of London instead. Why she wanted that is anyone's guess, but it does explain a thing or two to consider it that way.

    • @JoeThornhill
      @JoeThornhill 3 месяца назад

      @@gazzamanazza4pm Yeah, I'm not really critical either, just end up learning a few things from the odd video essay (or reaction) or someone who actually has a degree in media literacy and therefore knows what they're talking about in their videos.
      I also kind of forgot about Hartigan's overall influence on the Cyber king. Hell, the ending reminded me that she wasn't the real Hartigan anyway. Who know how, when and why, but she hasn't been thinking straight for years. We don't even know the real Hartigan. But then, that's the B plot that doesn't really matter, though. It IS more about The Doctor and Jackson.

      Compared to the ABSOLUTE FESTERING MANURE that RTD is writing these days, this episode, honestly, seems like a masterpiece. I have no problems with it at all. Sure, it takes a lot of liberties with science, but everything is explained. Things don't happen "for no reason" (unlike in the new series).
      The episode has a great concept that hooks you in, great performances, and the whole personal story is really compelling and emotional. It's a wonderful Christmas episode. RTD was GREAT back then. He revived the series so well and all these episodes were so good. It's just incredible to think this is the same man who now seems like a lunatic writing highly offensive gibberish that destroys the show and makes no sense at all.

    • @gazzamanazza4pm
      @gazzamanazza4pm 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Scripture-Man Can't really say I agree with you there. This era (as in 2005-2010) is my favourite of the show and the one I think is the best, but I still enjoyed the most recent season overall, at least more than I did Chibnall's time as showrunner. I don't agree with every writing choice RTD makes these days, but by and large the show feels fun to me again, and it feels more in keeping with the lore than some of the plot twists Chibnall wrote. I don't want to deep-dive into any of that here though since I don't want to risk spoiling anything for Jules as she reads the comments.
      Ultimately though, Doctor Who canon has always been a pretty loose thing, and I kind of like the way RTD has structured things now, where it's almost like everything and nothing is canon all at once, so just believe what you want.
      But hey, you do you, I've no right to tell you what to like. As long as you're not treading on anyone else's toes or complaining about the show having progressive politics (which it always has, since 1963), you're free to hate on the writing all you like. That said, I prefer to try and stay on the positive side, even if I'm not a fan of something. No reason to rain on others' parades as it were.

    At 11:12 the Infostamp shows the Eighth Doctor - Paul McGann who regenerated from Sylvester McCoy in the 1996 one-off TV film . I also adore how he echo's the doctor with the line about "having bad dreams" and having a reason to live which calls back to the doctors daughter "all those things you'd been willing to die for..I thought you'd finally found something to live for". The reason they had to use archival footage in the Five Doctors is because the BBC refused to restructure the story to make it revolve around his character, with a similar issue nixing a planned special for the show's 30th anniversary, and I think the 40th as well. On top of that is his derision of other actors who have played the role, having been quoted as saying of them, "I avoid them, you know. Not with any malice. A degree of contempt, perhaps but mildly, mildly contemptuous."

    Past doctors did appear a few times in the old show, most notably in the 20th anniversary special "The Five Doctors" which featured all the incarnations of the doctor up to that point (though the 1st doctor had to be recast due to the original actors death) and many returning companions from throughout the series history.

    Rad reaction as always Jules!
    This is my favorite of The Specials and this is the one I commented on that I couldn't wait for you to react to!
    David Morrissey would have been a great Doctor, his performance in this is first rate!
    This is also my favorite story with the Cyber Men.
    The balloon TARDIS is so freakin' cool!
    David Tennant really gets to shine even more than usual in these Specials (no offense to any of the companions)!
    Your journey Jules with The Doctor have been a breath of fresh air, your enthusiasm is infectious (in a good way)!
    Keep up the great work as always and many blessings to you and yours!

    I loved watching your reaction to this one. Because I don’t like it. It always seems so blah, cheesy, twee, obvious simple jokes, an annoying fake out by saying Jackson Lake is the Doctor, and weak villain portrayal…but you don’t come into it with my preconceptions and you were able to fully enjoy the fun of it. You made me look at it in a brand new way. It’s not ever going to be a favourite of mine, but I no longer think I’ll skip over it in a rewatch. Thank you for helping me appreciate it! ❤

    For many folks, Tennant was the favorite! This is why even all these years later, he is still popular! At the beginning of this episode, I thought this was going to be an interesting take on crossover Doctor episodes. In the past, there have been episodes called The Three Doctors, or The Five Doctors, etc., where previous Doctors (or stand-ins for those whose actors have passed already...) take part in a story arc. I thought this was going to be one where the guest Doctor was one we have not yet seen, but was already "planned" as the next Doctor. I did, however, think that Jackson was too much like Tennant's version to be a new Doctor! So when they both said "Allons y" (French for "Let's go!" Literally: Let's go there!" for those of you who don't speak French) I thought that this was some sort of copycat! Also, I am with you on how the episode was just a romp until the end, when we are reminded of the Doctor's lonely existence. It was a fun episode and a wonderful reaction! Thanks!

    An underrated episode imo! I adore it, but it's not a favorite to too many people. It has several very poignant moments, and was a great red herring for the audience haha

    Ah, this episode. The Jackson Lake half of it is one of my favourite things the show's ever done, and the Cyber-King half is... not. If they'd done something a bit more grounded - like S1's Dalek episode, maybe one or a few Cybermen terrorising London - and kept the Doctor mystery the main thing, it would have been perfect.
    But that's the Russell T Davies era of this show in a nutshell - one minute it's some of the best television ever, and the next it's absolute nonsense. And that's a good thing!
    Also, if you liked Tennant and David Morrissey together, you should look up the show Blackpool - it stars Morrissey as a dodgy arcade owner, and Tennant as the detective who suspects him of a murder. Oh, and it's a JUKEBOX MUSICAL.

    You know I remember this episode, but I had forgotten the actor who played the “Doctor”.. it’s weird because I’ve associated with a completely different role. I imagine that this is what it’s like for some people with certiajn other regenerations of the Doctor and then watching them on Doctor Who… which has to be difficult.

    Unfortunately I already knew the future of the series enough to know that this episode was a little misleading, but still a fun one nonetheless! David Tennant is one of my favorites as well, my other favorite is the Fourth Doctor from classic Who. It does hurt when Doctors change or companions leave, especially when you grow so attached. Looking forward to the next episode, thank you as always!

    Two of my favourite actors in a single episode :) I think David Morrissey would have been a great doctor. He's best known to North American audiences for playing "The Governor" aka Philip Blake in The Walking Dead. When I first saw it, I did not realize he was an English actor from Liverpool. When he did The Next Doctor episode, he was told not to tell anyone including his kids he would not be the next doctor. (They had cast another actor but not announced it.) Apparently his children asked "will we have to move to Cardiff?" (where the majority of Doctor Who is filmed) .

    This actually could have been a Harry Potter crossover episode.
    The story would have seen JK Rowling in the middle of writing her new Harry Potter book until an alien device turns her characters real.
    David Tennet saw it as fan fiction and declined.
    This is what the episode turned into.

  • @htim8997
    @htim8997 3 месяца назад

    At the time that this episode originally aired it was already widely publicized that David Tennant was leaving the show. So, calling the episode "The Next Doctor" was a serious bit of misdirection that implied he might be regenerating here. I wonder if that misdirection might be a part of why this episode is not as highly regarded as some others from this period.

I mean even the last episode we had the metacrisis doctor and the doctor donna. I like this story, it's a great mystery, and tugs at the heart string... My main gripe is the same with a lot of New Who - You just had a MASSIVE Cyber King killing people in the middle of London in the 1800's. Classic WHO tended to have alien invasions taking place mostly without us humans being any the wiser. I LOVED that fact. Yes, it was probably purely down to saving costs - for £20k per episode in the classic era, it's hard to shut down a city and get footage for a proper full on invasion.... But it meant that all of these stories were taking place on "my" planet - not just some fictional Earth...
