  • WIKIPEDIA:
The Smolensk air disaster occurred on 10 April 2010, when a Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft of the Polish Air Force crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk, killing all 96 people on board. Among the victims were the President of Poland Lech Kaczyński and his wife Maria, the former President of Poland in exile Ryszard Kaczorowski, the chief of the Polish General Staff and other senior Polish military officers, the president of the National Bank of Poland, Polish Government officials, 18 members of the Polish Parliament, senior members of the Polish clergy and relatives of victims of the Katyn massacre. The group was arriving from Warsaw to attend an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the massacre, which took place not far from Smolensk.
The pilots were attempting to land at Smolensk North Airport-a former military airbase-in thick fog, with visibility reduced to about 500 metres (1,600 ft). The aircraft descended far below the normal approach path until it struck trees, rolled inverted and crashed into the ground, coming to rest in a wooded area a short distance from the runway.

@ThyPeasantSlayer it's the exact same recording but with more at the end, the source of the recording is the Polish government but of course it's not like it's going to be in a different language or something. I don't know what language they're speaking but I assumed it would be Polish due to the fact that that was their nationality. I know the air traffic controller was speaking in Russian to them.

You tell me. Once in 1991 as Air Traffic Controller I heard the recording of a student who had a midair collision in his Cessna 152 against another one. Somehow, while he fell, he pushed the _transmit_ botton on the yoke and sent a horrible scream that was heard by everyone on the frequency and recorded by our Tower. It's the most terrifying thing I ever heard in my life. That kid knew he was going to die. He was 19 only. The other student, 22, died too. They never saw each other, one aircraft was hit by the other from above and behind.

here there where not trained at all. (from Wiki)---> On April 15, 2015, TVN24 news channel announced that investigating journalists learned from the report of experts for the military prosecutor's office that the pilot crew members did not have sufficient experience with the Tu-154M aircraft. Only the first pilot had rudimentary knowledge of Russian. Their credentials were fake. In October 2015, the military prosecutor's office reiterated that "misconduct by the crew" was the cause of the accident. The military prosecutor's office was dissolved a little later by the new defense minister, Antoni Macierewicz, and the investigation was transferred to the civilian prosecutor's office.

It is not true at all. President was only asked to pick up better alternative airport if landing would be impossible and after 5 minutes he told pilots that he accept any choice they will make. It was no pressure from any VIP, crash was coused mainly by pilots mistakes and lack of air training in Polish Military. Of course airport dramatic technical condition and ATC minor mistakes were also cofactors to disaster but it was mainly pilots guilt.

the reason why they ignored the pull up terrain warning is because smolensk airport (used to be a military airfield) at the time was not identified by the GPWS as an airport and so landing there would trigger the GPWS anyway. this was also an air force plane which routinely used to land at military airfields not part of the GPWS system and hence the alarm would trigger before landing all the time, so pilots were used to ignoring it but in this scenario, they actually fiddled with the barometer to turn it off which had the side effect of telling them they were flying higher than they actually were. There is a valley before Smolensk airport and it used the bottom of the valley as reference and not the higher terrain near the airport.

    To someone wondering:
Smolensk Military airport wasnt in the data base. So the pilots would hear the TAWS (pull up, Terrain ahead) anyways. At 100m the commander said „odchodzimy“ translated we stop this landing approach. He pressed a button on the Tu 154m yoke that automatically abandons the landing approach but it didnt work. At 70m they gave full throttle and pulled the nose up to the max. But it was too late. If someone says they should do it earlier, nope. The russian control Tower told the crew to consider stopping the approach at 100m what they did.

@@equim7363 Yep but here we see your lack of knowledge. The Pilots shouldn’t go lower then 100m, they did abandon their landing approach at 100m but because the airport didn’t have ILS the special button on the Tu-154m yoke didn’t work at 70m they gave full power (0.3-0.9s taking up to 5s) after realizing that the button didn’t work. Additionally the tower did give an incorrect heading (2-8-0). After the catastrophe the polish military used the same plane tu 154m numer boczny 102 at the same place to check if all the things the pilots did were correct. And you know what? They somehow successfully abandoned the approach doing exactly the same as the 101 crew did. So stop bullshiting the pilots.

In those 13 seconds they travelled about 1/2 a mile and lost an additional 200 plus feet. At my airline and just about every airline in the world that I can think of, you hear a “pull up” warning and you are supposed to instinctively add power and go around. You can analyze why you got the warning later, but to ignore it like they did was negligent and pathetic.

People only seem to talk about the polar opposites - either having no issue flying or being too overwhelmed with fear to even put yourself into that situation. I'm okay putting myself into that situation, and I remain calm externally until I land - but inside I'm feeling uneasy. Anybody else the same? 🤔

@Progressive It's a popular theory in Poland that the crash was an assassination on the polish government. It's said that just minutes after 101 went down Russian soldiers rush to the crash site and execute possible survivors. It is also said that these soldiers shout: "Shoot them, kill them" and stuff like that. The video is pretty blurry and many sounds are inaudible. Even native speakers of the russian language couldn't confirm the kill orders of the guys running around. The most audible sound in that video is the train horn from the railway line some meters away. You can find it around here on YT.
