CLIP DESCRIPTION:
V (Hugo Weaving) breaks into BTN and speaks to the entire population about the problem with politics in London.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta takes place in an alternate vision of Britain in which a corrupt and abusive totalitarian government has risen to complete power. During a threatening run in with the secret police, an unassuming young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) is rescued by a vigilante named V (Hugo Weaving) -- a caped figure both articulate and skilled in combat. V embodies the principles of rebellion from an authoritarian state, donning a mask of vilified would-be terrorist of British history Guy Fawkes and leading a revolution sparked by assassination and destruction. Evey becomes his unlikely ally, newly aware of the cruelty of her own society and her role in it.

A movie where the hero actually had an intention to change the world instead of stopping whatever the villain plan was.
Wow. I only just realised this. Every movie ever is stopping someone bad and going back to “normal” when the hero wins.
Difficult to write. Follows from the graphic novel that was very well written.

I mean, you could argue that V *IS* the villain.

“if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror”
V, 2005
Exactly what most of the population in the West needs to do.
The only way we are going to change it is by realising its the masses that can change all this injustice.
“But again, truth be told, if you’re looking for the guilty… you need only look into a mirror.” This quote has always stuck with me from this movie.
Because its truth tyrants only rule because the people are to cowardly to rise up against them.
V is the best vigilante. Not only using your abilities to kill. But using his brilliant mind to humiliate your enemies.
Sam Tani probably just like Batman but not really V is to take down corrupt villains not Batman
I wouldn't say he is a "vigilante" since the latter suggests taking the law into your own hands. V is a revolutionary, he seeks to overthrow the government and the system it represents, not enforce its law.

2006: this will be funny
2020: this is reality
The thing is, this is based on a rather flawed and rather dangerous assumption that humans are, well, nice to each other. The reality is, Hobbes is closer to the truth to the human condition than we dreamed of in our worst nightmares and he is spot on when it comes to the macro-scale (i.e. 'tribal' and 'ethnic' populates this scale). So, in truth, he is only causing a new group to take power and would learn from the flaws of the previous.
It also doesn't help that the assumptions and preconceptions of freedoms and rights (i.e. they're static entities) are wholly flawed as well, the reality of such is that rights and freedoms are fluid constructs, built upon the technological context of its period. As technology marches on, so do threats, and thus you have to (at times) rescind rights and freedoms in the process...
@@TheTrueAdept I have to agree with you. I think Joker from The Dark Night summed it up best.
" When the chips are down, these... these civilized people, they'll eat each other. "
@@shannonrhoads7099 the thing is, Joker from The Dark Knight was both right and wrong at the same time. Hobbes might be closer to the truth to the human condition on an individual level, he isn't on the mark as the human condition is better described as a 'spectrum of bastardry'. Where Hobbes is scarily on the mark is on the macro-scale... and we've seen throughout history how not understanding THAT ended...

"Good evening, London. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comfort of everyday routine, the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, whereupon important events of the past, usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, are celebrated with a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are, of course, those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way."
"Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well, certainly, there are those who are more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable. But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease."
"They were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night, I sought to end that silence. Last night, I destroyed the Old Bailey to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago, a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you, then I would suggest that you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me, one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot." - V

Tell me, do I stand alone on this? The Line "Words will always retain their power", beautifully underscored as it is, always gives me goosebumps.
It seems to me the very most essential and important message of this film, that we all can bring change in us and others and so the entire world through our words.
We can hate each other, we can hate what we say, we can hate the truth. But when we silence others, we deafen ourselves. Even as the loudest voices try to drown it in doubt, the truth remains and the truth will out. It rings true and can come from and be heard in any position. So to hear it, we must not attempt to silence or deafen, but do our best to listen.
It's words and freedom of speech that they're trying to ban, that's why we must not consent, freedom of speech must remain untouched, regardless of the consequences.
This is feeling really accurate now
Even more so today.
It becomes less subtle as the scene progresses, but I love how V's speech is ironically paralleled by real-time events at several points:
"I expect, even know, orders are being shouted into telephones..." Sutler calls Edgecombe
"There is something...terribly wrong with this country, isn't there?" Edgecombe deflects blame onto Sutler for the system's design
"You need look only in a mirror." Close-up shot from behind of Evey looking at V's face on the screen, like she's looking in a mirror
"All he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent." Lingering close-up of Finch
I know so many of these moments are ridiculously on the nose on second viewing, but it's still so much fun seeing how much thought and care went into editing this scene.
Also how when he says ‘surveillance’, the cop guy suddenly asks for cameras.
This movie resonates even more today than it did in 2005, considering all we've been through, and are still suffering at the hands of our governments.
