The Challenge
Energy Systems Network (ESN), an Indianapolis-based non-profit and a branded initiative of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP) and CICP Foundation, Inc. (CICP Foundation), is the organizer of the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC). The IAC is a broadly collaborative effort that brings together public-private partnerships and academic institutions to challenge university students around the world to imagine, invent and prove a new generation of automated vehicle software to run fully autonomous racecars and inspire the next generation of STEM talent.
The IAC taps into prize competitions’ which have a long track record of focusing minds and leveraging competing teams and other third-party contributions to overcome complex challenges. In particular, the IAC is inspired and advised by innovators who competed in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge, which put forth a $1 million award in 2004 that created the modern automated vehicle industry. Moreover, given its heavy presence of university-affiliated teams, the DARPA Grand Challenge inspired an entire generation of students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
A primary goal of the IAC is to advance technology that can speed the commercialization of fully autonomous vehicles and deployments of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). These enhancements will lead to increased safety and performance in all modes of motorsports and commercial transportation. In addition, the competition is a platform for students to excel in STEM.
The first history making IAC was held on Oct. 23, 2021 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where 21 universities from 9 countries forming 9 teams competed for the $1 million grand prize. TUM Autonomous Motorsport - Technische Universität München (Germany) took home the top prize.

A.I. is like, "that looks like fun.."
Proceeds to manipulate humans in to thinking that it was their idea.
It’s the spirit of competition; develop new technologies, increase speed and reduce injuries! Terrific!
I think they forgot the "increase speed" bit though 😂🤣😂
Why? What's the sport in the car driving itself @ a track?
Taking Humanity out of racing is just boring and dumb!
It feels like when you play something like Civilization, but you make all the players AI on hard and let them duke it out.
Yeah, it will be kind of interesting the first time, but unless a new challenge is introduced to each race they will get dull pretty quick.
It’s more for research than it is for sport.
Imagine having a highway full of autonomous cars that can safely do +150mph.
The previous video explained what the race is about and why they are doing it.
What's the point in driving top-tier cars? The engineering involved. You're just upset you have to think about teams instead of individual "super humans" like most sports.
You could post nothing else and still be one of my favorite RUclips channels of all time based on what’s here so far
I really hop to see this race with all of them racing at the same time.
I’m afraid one day they will invent an autonomous football or basketball without players.
Doubt it.
In the near future, racing teams may study them just like the pro "go" players have done.
❤❤❤
❤ 👍
steering under the physics vs guiding comfortably by remote
I feel sad for the people in the comment who can't see why it's interesting.
Where is the sport?
Yawn.
During the races. This is done for fun and to put software against software. A different type of race. But you clearly don't understand
Hello guys
It's like totalling your car in a racing game and then proceed to watch the full remaining of the race with the game controlling the other cars. So fun.
I'm bored
Then watch something else. You're like the guy who orders a hamburger then complains his sandwich came on hamburger buns.
I fail to see the point in autonomous race cars. Now... remotely controlled race cars... with onboard cameras and drivers in simulators. That I could see as a way to remove the drivers from danger while maintaining the skill that makes racing interesting.
So you fail to see the progress involved in making software that can drive cars. That's fine. It's not for you anway.
@@SECONDQUEST Autonomous software is a demand side economy that motorsports will not generate progress in. Adopting it for racing changes the fundamental concept of the sport, resulting in Clinton-esque definitions of what racing, "is". What I fail to see is the benefit of doing so. But the next time I want a judgmental response from a pompous stranger that's nowhere close to anything that could be considered a rational thought, I'll give you a ring.
@@RadRidesByCru Curse you Bill Clinton, for ruining motorsport.
Our nations infrastructure is really outdated . Highways & roads in the U.S.A need some serious improvements . The street I live on already feels like a Race track with all the darn pot holes 🕳️. Last thing i need is my vehicle autonomously driving through them
dude, race tracks have to be smooth. They can't have pot holes in them.
I have no problem with them testing or racing autonomous vehicles, but as a spectator, I have ZERO desire to pay to see robots drive. I'll stick to human sports thank you.
So who do we root for? Which driver showed amazing skill and bravery on this race? I have raced cars as an amateur. It is thrilling! I'm not sure there's a point in this. Unless you are a real geek. I'd rather spend my time participating in an event, or getting laid.
Slowwwww
ridiculous. looks like indy is trying to beat formula 1 in a race to irrelevance.
I assume you are saying that because you think the whole sport is going to be replaced with AI drivers, which is absolutely not what is happening
Well that's pretty dumb. Where's the thrill in that?. What a total waste of money. 🤣🤣🤣
You mean "where is the risk to human life!" Which makes you a horrible person. This isn't a replacement for human racing, it's another test. Who can develope software to race the best. Especially considering that F1 cars are so complex they require a team to manage its interesting to see it run by software made by a group of people
@@SECONDQUEST your response is further from the truth. I have a lot of respect for human life.
Those race cars that are actually driven by an actual human being are pretty much way more safe to drive than a lot of today's automobiles.
