In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to The Sign of the Southern Cross by Black Sabbath. The song is from Mob Rules, their 10th album, celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. This is as much fun as I've had on a Metal Monday in a while...a great track with a great message and powerful singing! Enjoy.

This and Falling off the Edge of the World are my two faves on the album.
RIP Ronnie James Dio....bought this the day it came out. Long live
@@michaelmellum4318 this was the last Sabbath album I ever bought ! This and Heaven and Hell are some of the best work Dio ever did !!
@@SirManfly check out the Tony Martin era....the eternal idol....the headless cross... and cross purposes. You won't be disappointed

Same here, two fantastic songs. Still listen to Mob Rules lp quite often.
Dio's voice on this album is just so damn powerful. He was the best of the best.
🤘
he was not best of the best... there are a few great, great voices outside, but he was one of the greatest... and that over so many years... thats really rare...
@@seelenwinter6662 That's what I always say, one of the best
Dio's vocals could bring a tear to the eye of anyone
AMEN. I'm 75 and he still gives me chills. @mezykin
Ronnie once said about Tony Iommi, "A great guitarist will write 2 maybe 3 iconic riffs in their lifetime. Tony writes 2 or 3 a day."
Always love hearing Geezer Butler's bass playing. This song especially stands out IMO. A powerful song!! "Lonely is the Word" from Heaven and Hell is another great Dio/Sabbath song.
Absolutely! Lonely Is The Word is a bomb and that haunting solo a masterpiece.
You got that right!! Geezer is always so inventive. The 2 "Dio" albums are my favorite Sabbath albums.
@@Sequencer Its my favorite guitar work from Iommi. :)
I’ve heard it said that Geezer IS bass and I have no argument, whatsoever!
Yes please do lonly is the word
My favorite Sabbath album. Dark and heavy. All killer, no filler.
You need to do “Falling Off The Edge Of The World” because it will blow you away too.
Agree. "Seems like desperate measures, but sometimes, it's got to be done."
Yep, its one of my favourites.
love this one
Yessssssssss!!!!!! Just amazing!
And country girl and over and ovee
Fun fact, the reason this album sounds so damn good is it was produced by Martin Birch, the same guy who did all of Iron Maiden's classic 80s albums.
Not to mention Early Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Whitesnake and Rainbow, among many, many others! He had the Midas Touch, for sure!
@@crusheverything4449 Yep, the fact that he did Machine Head and Rising made him gold even before the Maiden years. Everything he mixed still holds up today.
He did heaven and hell too
He was a true master, he did all the Rainbow albums with Dio and the two first Black sabbath albums with Dio and all the Deep purple albums in the 70´s and many more from other artists. Rock I Peace !
The G.O.A.T. , he is truly missed...

The whole album is amazing and Over and Over is a fantastic way to close out the album.
Tony gets down right dirty on Over and Over.

I have heard him so many times but still his voice manages to blow me away when I hear certain noter, it's just so beautiful you want to weep and then the exitement and joy I feel when I hear him. He's obviously great but still I sometimes wonder what is it with Dio that makes me feel this way and not with many other great singers or artists.

"Over and Over" from this album is amazing. I never see anyone recommend it, but damn if it isn't awesome!
best line ever written is in that song - 'too many flames, with too much to burn - and life's only made of paper'
Vinny Appice is a very musical drummer. He keeps it super heavy while creating parts that support the music and add another layer of musicality if you listen a little bit harder. He plays in the angles and spaces so well.
40yrs ago??? I remember buying this on vinyl when it first came out. Still one of my favourite albums.

Love Bill Ward. Forever. DEFINED the genre. But Vinnie's more bombastic, massive approach really fit this album well and especially this song.
I love Bill too. He was more of a swing drummer. Vinny is from the school of carmine(his bro) and John Bonham. I.e., HEAVY! 🤘
Vinnie is a beast on this album!!! And such a kind, funny, and talented artist!
I agree Vinnie changed everything on this album and was a great start for Dio's solo career as well.

Doug, please listen to "When Death Calls". It's a marvellous Black Sabbath song with Tony Martim on vocals. Masterpiece.
And a guest solo by Brian May. :)
@@pentagrammaton6793 Nice little fun fact dude, didn't know
When the chorus and that MASSIVE slow riff returns (I think with a gong) after the faster part I just about need a shower and a change of clothes. So, yes. I'd love to see a reaction to WDC. I doubt Doug will dig the lyrics though. It gets a little dark.
@@wardka Even Iommi complained in his auto-biography that Martin's lyrics for that album were too dark.
@@mutate34 Personally, I think those dark lyrics are a kind of trademark of this album.
Guys and Doug, don’t forget that this was MASTERFULLY produced by Martin… BIRCH (as for H’n’H). Personally, I never ever heard anything as better produced as those songs from Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules, even tough I’ve been trying to ever since! Hail Birch productions (any Maiden fans arounds?). Being eleven in 1981, we were definitely blessed for the rest of ours lives by Tony, Gzr, Ronnie, Vinnie, Geoff and Martin. Thanks mates!
Birch, the foundational godfather of metal production: Deep Purple, Rainbow, Sabbath, Maiden! (And still a truckload of others like Fleetwood Mac, Whitesnake, Blue Öyster Cult...)
When I first listened to the album, Vinnie's drum sound was very unique. I wondered if they recorded the drums without any bottom heads, and unprocessed.
Yes, Martin Birch and Maiden´s Piece Of Mind. Man that record is sounding GOOD !
Martin Birch was an absolute master at his craft. I'm blown away each time I listen to the albums he produced. H&H in particular: It's hard to believe it was recorded in 1980! It still has a incredibly modern and well engineered sound. Comparatively, most other metal albums of the time sound like they were recording hobos screaming in plastic buckets, through a phone. Not all of them, obviously (for instance, I think Tom Allom was doing a pretty good job, too, although it may sounds a bit more dated by today's standard, but not that much), but Birch really was second to none.
Amen. Martin mixed and produced so many epic Metal albums. He did every Maiden album from Killers to Seventh Son. God rest his soul!
There's a Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath vocals too. A very gifted singer as well.
Pffft.
TYR Album as good as this IMHO
Absolutely. Headless Cross is criminally overlooked.
TYR & Headless Cross are effing awesome. Not bad vocals from an ex cab driver!!!!
Doug continues to be my favorite music react person I've seen on RUclips. It was brief, but your breakdown of the math behind the composition was great. Heard all the time growing up in music classes that "music has lots of math in it" but the only example they ever gave was strings making notes and being halved and such. Knowing how you use math to do the actual composing is far more interesting, and makes a lot of songs make more sense.
Basically Doug I'm saying thanks for teaching me more about music than my music teachers ever did when I was a kid lol.
I'm a huge theory nerd, so I love listening to Doug break these songs down. I'm jealous of his perfect pitch though. I learned relative pitch in theory classes (mnemonic practice) but being able to identify what the I chord actually is, unless I have a guitar or piano there to pound it out, not happening.
"Falling Off the Edge of the World". "Country Girl" and "Over and Over" are other great songs from Mob Rules......
I get goosebumps EVERY TIME i hear this song; one of the best albums by one of the best bands, and singers of ALL TIME!!!
"Don't live for pleasure, make life your treasure" ...Best line ever!
"The Power of Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio".
Yes, yes it is.
I freaking LOVE Ozzy era Sabbath - but even I have to admit this is far beyond. Ronnie and Vinny (who reminds me of John Bonham) really take Sabbath to a whole new level.
I feel like this a "hidden" gem in Sabbath's discography despite being one of their best.
Check out the Live Evil version of this where they merge into Heaven & Hell. Gives me chills just thinking about it it's that epic!
I had a friend that saw the Live Evil tour. He said he got serious chills.. like a darkness fell over the whole place..
Dead right that is epic!

I saw Live to Dio and Sabbath on last Tour with "Heaven and Hell"...Yes Doug, Black Sabbath change his name to Heaven and Hell... you need to react "Falling off the Edge of the World" LIVE!
First time I heard Ronnie James Dio, I was hooked. One of those iconic, easily identifiable voices. I would put him in a class with Freddie Mercury.
I think Freddie's voice has more range and is even more distinguishable, also he was more innovative as a musician and experimented way more. But I totally agree to your first and second sentence.
@@AlfW Well Ronnie rarely used falsetto like Freddie did, but live Freddie would quite often not go for the high note like on the original, whereas it was rare for Ronnie to not go for the highs. He also had more power than Freddie. Freddie was certainly a more innovative musician but I do feel that Ronnie was slightly ahead as a vocalist, definitely more exciting. Dio also had such control over his voice, but it took Mercury a while to tame his naturally fast vibrato. Roger Taylor didn't rate Freddie's voice on at least the first and possibly second Queen albums due to that lamb-like vibrato.
@@AlfW You are wrong on so many levels. Dio had 4 octaves vocal range, Mercury 3.Dio 's career precedeed that of Beatles, starting in 1957.
Queen are my favourite all time band so naturally Freddie's voice is going to be up there for me. But I'm also a huge Sabbath, and RJD fan. I first saw Sabbath on this tour. Dio blew us all away. He has the greatest metal voice of all time. In fact someone said his voice is the sound of metal. I agree. Hard to compare directly with Freddie as apart from Queen's earlier, 'heavier' years, they sang very different styles.
Hard to compare those two. Both are my all time favorites. Ronnie was the better singer. Freddie was more inventive.
Ronnie was the absolute best voice in the history of metal music.
He had everything in his vocal arsenal.
Softness, Brutality, and everything in between.
Not to mention the flawless and truthful interpretation.
Every single word coming through his mouth had a deep meaning and his delivery was second to none.
No, Ronnie was NOT the absolute best voice in the history of metal music. He was the absolute best voice in the history of music
@@ramsestoo Ronnie, in addition to singing in the baritone and tenor range, he is also capable of doing female voices, at the beginning of this song he is clearly singing with a soprano voice, I heard him also do a contralto voice on his first albums at the beginning of his career, The versatility and power of vocal manipulation he has on his vocal instrument is truly impressive.
Would love to hear Country Girl sometime. One of my favoites
Thank you for doing this one Doug. This song and RJD grabbed me when I was 12 years old and have never let me go, I'm 52 now. RIP Ronnie!
On the 1982 live album called Live Evil they played a 12 something version of Heaven & Hell, continued over into Sign of the Southern Cross and ended with Heaven & Hell. App. 20 min. Exceptional. Live Evil are a palindrom. Can be read from both sides. Go listen to Falling of the Edge of the World from the Mob Rules album. One of the best Black Sabbath songs ever
Dio is my favorite singer ever
Its now 1 o'clock at night, but this gives me the urge to listen to the album all night long. Bought the original in 1981. A gem. And together with Voodoo, Falling, Lonely and Mob Rules my all time favorite on this album. Glad you picked this one Doug. From The Netherlands, a great Day! Hope you see the Signs🤟🏻😎🤟🏻
Ozzy left and the band soldiered on with two absolutely classic albums with Dio, Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules.
He didn’t exactly leave, he was kicked out lol
"Don't live for pleasure; make life your treasure". My favorite Black Sabbath song, and that's saying something. So majestic and powerful. Best Iommi guitar tone outside of Master of Reality. Thanks for the nice interpretation of the lyrics, Doug.
Dio is the reason I'm a "Heavy Metal" fan. He was the first one that I heard and it all started from him. While he is now gone, his music and his voice will live on forever. That's the great thing about musicians, the music they created will never disappear. Long live Ronnie James Dio (and Neil Peart).
Nice reaction! When Doug looks like he's sniffing a stinker you know he likes the music :-D How about Rainbow's Long Live Rock 'n' Roll for a Metal Monday?

I haven't heard this song since I was 13 (1982). Great tune. Thanks.
Please check out the last song "Over and Over" on the album Mob Rules. One of my favorites. Mournfully beautiful with awesome guitar.
Black Sabbath saved my life when I was in a rut, metal genres including rock and roll in general sounds spiritual to me, that helped me in the later years to filter and navigate the urban jungle.
Dio is still probably the greatest of the vocalists ever in the Rock world. This is a fantastic song as are all of them on the Heaven and Hell album and others from those early sessions of Dio with Sabbath. Pure Class
Ronnie is amazing how he shifts from floating in his falsetto into full voice, on one crescendo swell sustained note. So difficult, so much control! Vinnie is Italian so I think he pronounces it A-pee-chay.
Ronnie was a freak of nature. I actually think, that his singing technique has not been that good, looking at it as it is tought by the book. He just figured out out how it worked for him, when he was using his breathing skills, that he learned from playing trumpet. According to his autobiography, even that worked pretty fast. He just had the pipes to get away with it. Maybe any other guy might have grinded his vocal cordes by trying to do, what Ronnie did. Someone once said, Ronnie should be the subject of some serious researches about his vocals.
What makes me wonder is, that nobody ever talkes about Ronnie‘s special signature sound. A sound, that I have never heard from anyone else.
Ronnie was able to produce a certain growl sound. Growl sound are usually performed in lower voice registers, but Ronnie was able to do them in his higher chest voice as well. He did that a lot, especially during his Sabbath years.
To me Ronnie is the Bruce Lee of Vocals.
@Jay, his brother Carmine does but Vinny always said A-pis-sy
@@MB-co6qj - Carmine says “UH-piece” and Vinny says, “ah-PISS-ee”. The traditional Italian way is “uh-PEE-chay”.
This song still sounds every bit as good as it did back when I first heard it in 8th grade in 1983. Thank you for the excellent analysis and insightful commentary, Doug.
Awesome video Doug. You are right on target about the song,The Sign of the Southern Cross.I have always listened to Classic Metal bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.Keep up the Great work Doug.
SOTSC is a classic - Dio and Iommi were brilliant together
This may be my favorite Black Sabbath tune of all time. Sheer power and all cylinders firing furiously.
For Metal Mondays you really must examine some UFO just a magnificent band and their 79 live album Strangers in the Night is up there if not above all those great 70’s live albums. So many tracks to choose from but would start with Rock Bottom. Michael Schenker’s virtuoso solo is a joy to behold. Envoy some UFO Doug…

'Mob Rules' is such an incredible record. Sabbath with Dio and Ozzy brought out the best in each other in '80/'81 delivering 4 absolute masterpieces.
Totally agree!!! Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, Blizzard of Oz & Diary of a Madman! Bought all of these amazing albums on disc & listen to them on a regular basis! Great music lasts forever, period.
Doug, great analogies! Love your reactions and theoretical comments as well. I/we have known this song since the early eighties when it came out.
To see someone get excited and moved when hearing it for the first time reminds me how great this is...40 years!
Good one, Doug. Its Vinnie App'-i-see. Its very cool you enjoyed this, there is a huge library of Ronnie James songs that are uplifting (with a twist, usually). Ronnie was very much an advocate for thinking for yourself & believing in yourself.🤘🏼

First time hearing this song and I love it!! Thanks for showing me this Sabbath song.
The two Sabbath albums eith Dio 'Heaven and Hell' and 'Mob Rules' are both amazing and everyone remotely fan of the genre should hear all of them :)
I was 13 years old when this album came out. The tone and (yes) the power. The size. Were enormous. It felt like pure evil when Ronnie and Tony brought it all together. The early 80's metal was something to behold. Life-changing for a young guitarist such as myself. Yes, E Minor became our staple for many of our jams.
Seen Dio many many times live growing up. he was ALWAYS on point.
He usually tuned down to C# because of his lack of fingertips from his accident in youth.
I love watching your reactions to music. lol
Sabbath are unique. Their music has real character and magnifies the heaviness and yet so melodic it's frightening. Not many bands have the balls to create music of this ingenuity and craft. Great musicians who rocked my world 🌎.
How good would it be to hear Iommi come in with that big riff for the first time. Doug at 3.57.....
I'm sorry, but this song has the single greatest guitar riff in history.
It's up there for sure
I concur fun to play real LOUD
Single greatest along with almost all the other Iommi riffs.
I think it's the heaviest riff ever. It just plows into your sonic chest like a thunderbolt
Another Masterpiece..
One of my favorites, especially Tony's range of rhythm tone depth and arrangements.
DIO, Butler and Appice.
Originally, the "sign" was usually for sailing ships at sea South of the equator who sailed by the stars in an age long ago.
It gave you a directional bearing during the dark age of superstitions and such.
Plus, Ronnie milks his magic of lyricism and mysticism, etc.

This song is a brilliant masterpiece! Along with Heaven and Hell, this is the best Black Sabbath song.
H&H and this were a 1-2 punch. This is probably the highlight off the album Mod Rules. I have this on 8 track !
What’s better - the bass riffs, the drums, tony as heavy as ever or Ron unleashing his onslaught? This entire album is a masterpiece. So was heaven and hell. Ozzies first 2 solo albums at the same time were spectacular too. Addition by subtraction

I think Ronnie's greatest and most under rated vocal performance is on Over and Over on the Mob Rules album.
The constellation of the Southern Cross is the one depicted in the Brazilian Flag !
Only one of them. There are others...
Would love to hear your take on All The Fools Sailed Away, I Could’ve Been A Dreamer, and Rock n Roll Children
Mob Rules, title track, is also one of their best from this album.
Vinnie Apice, pronounced Ap-u-see. (Years went by before I knew for sure. 🙂) Thanks for your insight on this great song. I've been listening to it for 40 years (how is that possible?!), and I can appreciate it from a different perspective now. I had no idea what went into that song musically. So much more than I ever imagined.
Black Sabbath has been tuning down since their 3rd album. Made it much easier to play for Tony Iommi after his tragic work accident that cut the end of 2 fingers off, literally on his last day of work before starting his music career.
Your lyrical understanding of the song is spot on with Dio's personal philosophy he lived by. Excellent take on the whole thing, buddy. 😁👍 Long live Metal Mondays! 😎
the correct way to pronounce Appice (italian) is ah-pea-che
This is one of those songs that can never be too loud.
Thank you so much for explaining why the riff is so awesome. It's heavy, but there's something hopeful about it too. I belive you are spot on about the message in the lyrics: "Look to the stars and sail steadily on."
check out Ronnie on Rainbow's On Stage live album..the track Mistreated is a good one
Simply epic! Please continue with analysing Dio masterpieces: Heaven & Hell, Falling of the edge of the world, children of the sea, lonely is the word, die young from Sabbath. Stargazer, gates of Babylon, catch the rainbow are the epics from the Rainbow years… Timeless epic rock that is getting better with age!
Throw in All the fools sailed away and Egypt, the chains are on
Try out Gates of Babylon by Rainbow , with Dio on vocals a really old gem !!

I always preferred the Dio era Sabbath songs. I just think they're better written all around and perfect for Ronnie's vocals. I liked Ozzy's stuff, but Ronnie's my choice.
A phenomenal album, second only to 'Sabotage' for me.
Second to none IMO. Same thing for Heaven and Hell and as Doug pointedvout this song is full of positive energy, while Sabotage was definitely in their negative pole, in particular megalomania and the writ drains energy from the listener.
