My top tip for avoiding ads in PVZ 2 is by turning off your internet or wifi. The ad can't load and it will just skip the ad. You'll need them on to load up the game and for ad required things like earning gems/coins or renting a plant though.

I would say that preplanted plants are ok IF they're in a ability or decorations in GW (or endangered). So like wallnut is ok if preplanted because of cactus, but spring bean is a no go
I think that abilties like Wall-Nut and Potato Mine should be usable. Variants are up to you, (Fire Pea and Ice Pea exist). Neighborville characters should be usable too, like Snapdragon and Iceberg lettuce.
You should use the other versions of the GW plants since they kinda exist in the game as alternative skins so if you get ice or fire peashooter you should be able to use them since they are in GW
