How We Made CUSTOM TRIM to SOLVE a BIG Problem

- hey Gang! In today's video we're up against a unique challenge. This flooring has a big gap all the way around it on the front side of the house. Regular baseboard won't cover, and we don't want to use quarter round or shoe on this project. We had to get creative and fabricate a custom piece of base that not only functions properly but looks good! We think this profile we came up with looks fantastic and it was simple enough to make. Added bonus we were able to double our baseboard by cutting it in half, and help some roofers across the way!
Thanks for watching, and we'll see ya in the next one!

Hey Gang! Just so everyone knows, when we don't post for a week there's always a reason! This channel means everything to us, and we hate leaving ya'll hanging for so long. Dad was out of town for 3 days helping a family member move across states, and I'm going through a very stressful purchase for the first time ever. It's taken up so much time and energy. If everything goes well... the content is about to get a LOT better. But we can't say just yet, just send us some good vibes!
That’s alright Bud, we all have lives to live! Carry on and tell Dad to get his %@*#^ fingers away from that nail gun when attaching the combination baseboards! We don’t want no hospital bills to pay. And besides, it hurts 😭
No Worries..We will be here waiting for your next video.. You guys do a terrific job & it is always worth the wait! We all look forward to hear more details of the purchase .. KUTGW
Hey, now days? Like we say in the Military, 'Family First'. And after a few years of Pandemic and losing far too many folks? Take y'all's time, I'll be here.
Hmmm....now you've got me speculating....is Jordan buying his first house - a fixer upper maybe? Can't wait to find out!
My son and I love your content. Keep it coming when you can, we're patient. Sending prayers for everything good to the Stud Pack family from San Antonio, Texas!! 💯👍
Paul is a really entertaining guy ! So confident in front of the camera, so funny! And always has a good story to tell.
I love that dude.
I think it comes from being very self-aware, which also comes from experience. Knowing your strengths and areas that need improvement, and knowing there is more than one acceptable way to do a job.
A great solution... at first I wasn't sure about it, but as it went into the room it looked better and better... and as for the "like" button, it had a huge gap around it... looks better now! (needed some 1/4 round shoe LOL)
As you were holding the moulding while nailing it, I said to myself please don’t let a nail go through and one did. Please be extra careful and don’t put your fingers in the path of any nails. I love the channel and your can-do attitude! It’s inspired me numerous times - “so what would Paul do here?”
You just said a Key phrase for everything you do. " It's your project. Do whatever looks good to you" Amen. I'll never fuss at your choices. I may do somethings different than you, but that don't mean your way ain't right.
I had that finger parquet in my last house. The installer left a similar gap around the edge but it was filled with special cork strip that was stained to match the floor. Once the baseboard (skirting here in the UK) was on you'd only see about half inch of cork maximum, but it was blended so well into the parquet that you'd think it was there by design.
saturday night in the uk and i'm watching a studpack video
because, why not lol
Love your channel!!! Paul, you are a great teacher! I am an interior designer and have been renovating since the 80s. I learn something valuable from every one of your videos. Thanks to you and Jordan!
Great solution. Great outcome. Look forward to the painting tips.
Thanks for the update Jordan! Hope all is well! Have a great weekend!
Love seen quality time spent together for father and son.
I actually like it. Sometimes the simple moldings look the best and with my shaker style makeover of my kitchen and family rooms, simple square baseboards & door frames are what I want.
You could even dress it further by adding a small quarter round into the corner (shoe mold) if desired.
Create a tile entry and/or fireplace harth and use the flooring that is removed from those areas to fill in the baseboard gaps :).
No problem Bud, always worth the wait. Stay safe.
The whole time you were nailing I was so focused on your finger being directly behind it. I literally thought in my head "man if he misses that's gonna be a bad day" and then you IMMEDIATELY missed lol. Tripped me out, glad your reflexes were on point at least lol.
Same way I make my own back band door casing for wainscot. Do what you have to. If it looks good, it's done well, and the client is happy- that's all that matters.
I just love it that you guys are right up the road. I feel like you're family.
I always enjoy and appreciate your time.
Life is a lesson.
Saturday afternoon video to enjoy!! Thank you guys!! Keep up the good work!
Another clever Studpack solution- your base hack looks great and didn't bust the budget or schedule.
YAY!! A new Stud Pack video!!
A 1 1/4 inch gap is a pretty big span to bridge aesthetically and your solution looks awesome. Good luck with all your endeavors Jordan! Don't stress about us, I'm amazed at how much content you are able to present, you make it look effortless, but I know it isn't.
Looking forward to the big painting video series. My wife and I are going to be renovating the newly purchased house and we have quite a few walls to paint and trim to redo. :D thanks for all the great videos!
Observe, evaluate, fabricate and install. looks much better than I expected it to.
Given what you had to work with and budget it was a decent solution. I've had a similar problem in a 1955 California house. I had some oak milled in width and thickness of the existing parquet. Then I cut my own fillers so I could keep the base mould consistent through the house.
Great solution! Someone mentioned doing a round over on the lower piece but I have found that problematic with MDF and then you would have to sand, prime and paint. One alternative would be to put in the dreaded shoe or maybe a fluted door stop which would give a nice visual step down appearance, maybe not for every decor but it would add a custom look to some applications, somewhere between colonial & craftsman.
You got the like before I watched the video. These videos are so enjoyable because you don’t edit out an oops here or there. Thanks for keeping it real and being humble.
I currently have this same situation and this is a PERFECT! Solution for this. Thank you for the video. Next project for my house.
Paul when you first showed us what you were going to do to solve the problem, I thought to myself no way. But after you installed it, I was amazed how good it looked. Great job, great videos.
Great solution to a perplexing problem! well done as always, fellas!
Great work guys!
Love the work you guy's are doing, you and your boy make a great team. Next time you have to miter your base trims try using a 30 degree angle instead of 45, its a shorter cut, looks better if there is any shrinkage and still has plenty of glue surface.
Also, use CA glue on the joint before putting it in place. Less filling and sanding later.
I agree. I always just use the crown detent for scarf joints.
For ripping long material like that. Ive used a couple metal saw horses with two 2x4s on top and a piece of long scap ply as an outfeed table. Works pretty well
Brilliant as always
Hey guys. I definitely like that look over the quarter round trim. That style always had that BANDAID look to me. Your trim resembles an inverted crown molding, new age look. Thanks forcthe video. Take care guys.
Looks great guys!!
Looks great!!
Good ideas. Like how it turned out.
The roofers making Paul's eye twitch with that mess of hoses. lol
Elegant solution.
Looks excellent!
Trim looks great.
Looks great!
This is absolutely what I needed. I have a very similar problem and is the reason why my living room is still untrimmed, this is brilliant.
Looks good great solution!!
Yay! Can't wait for the paint show. I'm about to tackle that.
Thanks for this idea I have a box of hardwood to finish a closet and I had about an inch gap left to the wall but I didn’t want to buy a whole box of wood to use one peace I’d cut down majority of this helped me. It’s in a closet so it dose not have to be perfect but still looks better then a big gap
Great idea Paul. Looks better than I thought it was going to at first. But with everything else in the home square it fits perfectly.
This should honestly be on TV.
Hey gang, im a trim carpenter here in Washington state and on our apartment projects they use quarter round and scribe molding everywhere! Its funny how much hate it gets but it can get you outta some tricky places. I liked the finger as guide for gluing, that was pretty sweet haha
Nice solution. Looks good and complements the rest of the house.
The base/ “shoe” solution you came up with looks very good. Looks much better than your standard quarter round or shoe. Nice solution to the problem created by lazy flooring installers. Two👍👍
I care more about quality of content than frequency of content, and this is another solid example of quality! I’ll take it whenever I can get it, as I understand life happens. Cheers!
Necessity is the mother of invention! Way to think outside the box Paul!
Looks great
You guys are craftsmen! Great job.
Nice! Food for thought....
Nice work guys! Looks great!
What a cool solution. You created a great dust collector which will encourage the homeowner to be diligent in keeping their home clean 😀
Turned out great! Good tip to have in the ole back pocket!
Good little info laced vid ... Thx for sharing ...
Creative and resourceful…. Well done.
Awesome idea! I like it!!
🙏 Great work guys!
I think it looks great and like building a mantel for a fireplace you could add a piece of shoe or quarter round to what you have made and change it up again. It's simple and works, great idea 💡 👍
I'm doing a bathroom remodel. You inspired me to use plastic baseboard. It looks easy to work with. Great job guys.
That base trim idea is clean … never thought about such a thing before .. but might use it on my next remodel 👍
Can’t wait for the painting tips!!
Having a gap in the flooring, I use 5/4 stock ,
4 1/2” high and add a base mould to the top and 3/8 Qtr. rd. on the floor like in older homes and high end homes in Connecticut. The ends where the base meets the trim around a door gets a small amount trimed off at an angle. The trim cut is done at a 45 degree angle , but just cutting off a 1/4 -1/3 of a inch on the 5/4 thickness . This cut prevents the base from being noticeably thicker than the casing. Looks good.
A bit more work, time and expense, but your solution would look so much better than the L profile created here…
That is a very cleaver solution, well done. Another, more money, solution would be to take a piece of 3/4 oak and rip strips the same thickness as the flooring and fill in the gaps. You mentioned those 18 inch rollers, when I painted our new house a few years ago I looked everywhere for those, even the SW store didn’t have them. Would have saved me a lot of time not to mention they do a better job evenly laying down paint.
We do miss you when no posting but understand family first. Great Chanel and content. Hope all goes well.
Jordan your videography and editing are really getting excellent!
Love watching your videos! I always learn something new!
I have close to a whole house to paint inside and out, cant wait to see the painting videos!
me2
Trim is always a bugger, thats some nice custom work on that house. Great work stud pack 👍
I think it looks awesome great idea! Thanks for the info.
Beautiful job my brother 👏
super clean look given circumstances!!
I like the custom trim. Good look, even if not needed to fill the gap.
Pretty good idea
There are even lots of ways to improvise off of that piece. Nice way to have an original/uncommon style for baseboard
It looks really good! I think I would paint it a dark color or something so that lip wouldn't show all the dirt every time you sweep or mop the floor.
very teachable as always, thanks!
Hmm prett cool Idea. I like the idea of it keeping Entertainment centers and stuff a little ways from the wall too!
Paul and Jordan, I think it's a great solution considering what you had to work with. It looks pretty modern and very appropriate to the style.
Yeah I noticed you were doing a bad practice when you almost got your finger with the brads, gotta stay at least the distance of the nail away to keep that from happening, shot myself several times in the finger and it's surprisingly painful...
Nice work studpack!
Very interested. I love the concept. It looks wonderful. Love your work. Big up and love from Jamaica 🇯🇲 ❤️
Love the show. I love having to field engineer things. Your video show that perfectly.
Good work.
Hey Stud pack ... love u guys!
I watch all your great videos.
They are sooooo helpful.
Keep up the good work.
Since the base is now extended out now you need some chair rail :)
This looks soo much better than using quarter round!! Nice job guys!!
Myself, I would of liked a Ogee design on the bottom that would of stepped down in the thickness of the materials where it hits the floor. Make it a little less noticeable I think! Obviously there’s no great solution to really solve this gap issue. You got to do what you got to do and hope for the best it can be! Whether a big quarter round be better or not just depends on each person opinion. No matter what you do, your never going to please everyone!
Absolutely, but if the house is contemporary then that's going to be too busy.
Great episode as always. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.😁
Love watching you guys. Question about that tile by the door. Did you put a spacer under the tile to account for the thinset, or is something else going to account for that?
Great video guys! I think this was a great solution! Only problem I could see is I’m pretty sure wood glue will not stick to a painted surface. So if that’s true it was probably pointless to use it when glueing the 2 pieces together.
Great Job! Not really my preference, but different strokes.
Just found you guys, great job with the trim. This channel is entertaining
Great solution! I think the on one really price wise. COVID has really affected prices of everything in 90% of item here in Salt Lake.
15:11 Looks finished and clean. But I still think it’ll get banged up. Nice teamwork!
Awesome
Love the practical creativity, Paul. It makes me wonder whether this period of supply constraints will become known for such creative little touches. :)
