Sorry… that’s what I always feel fear of hearing people who misunderstand us. A few days ago, in Wal mart I shopped there for a few things. Then I paid through atm machine. Walked leisurely out to gate, employee might have yelling at me,,,coming after me to stop me. She realized that I was deaf, making gestures… I was bit annoyed because I knew what I was doing. I was not a thief ..luckily a customer came out towards me, telling her, what’s happening? She gulped and explained to him. A receipt was shown. She walked away. The customer happened to be my hearing husband.

Similar thing happened to me when I was in high school and juggling a job along with extracurricular activities. Over a weekend with Friday and Monday off requested, they fired me the following week saying I was a no-show. 😢 I wasn't a Vocational Rehabilitation client so it was a lost cause. It was in zip 97302.

From what it appears, the man was trying to sign for the new guy to stop something he was doing wrong. I think people forget or are ignorant to the fact that sign language as a visual communication method requires physical emphasis when conveying an important message so the man may have looked angry or agressive when raising his hands to tell the other to stop. I hope the CCTV footage illustrates this, but it is in bad faith to paint a deaf person as an aggressor when visual-gestural communication is genuinely so different when not speaking to someone orally. And if he was punched, he's a victim of assault either way. Why fire someone for that? Why can't HR at any corporation just do their job also?

also, i live in Houston, won't be going to THAT location any time soon unless he is rehired. Though i do feel he deserves better employment than that treatment.

Look at the character of two different men. The new worker worked for 3 weeks, not respecting the Deaf who worked for 30 years. It did not make any sense as to why the managers fired him without having an ASL interpreter. They need to find out the real reason but they do not care. They did not listen because of what they saw in the video, thinking that it was a threat. The managers are not smart for not taking the time to know exactly what's going on. They probably listen to one side of the story from the new hearing worker. They do not realize exactly what the Deaf man was saying to the new worker "STOP, doing what you're doing the wrong way when he gestured with his two hands up. He worked for 30 years!!! He did not hurt any hearing workers until the new worker started to punch his face. This is ridiculous! Now, he lost all the retirement, benefits, and more. One more thing: if the new worker did not do his job by checking out the inventory list, then the managers did not do a good job with the new worker. I am curious about the training parts.

I used to work fast food. If he has been there 30 years he has definitely worked there longer than his bosses. Fast food managers often stay at one store less than 10 years because stress. If he knows the right way to do it he should be able to teach that to the new guy without getting punched.
