She performed a rendition of XO for Kobe Bryant's memorial, she sang to his wife for the performance and change some of the lyrics to be more appropriate for the occasion. Super emotional and beautiful
Beyoncé put her soul out on this album, sang about sexuality, love, pain, talked about herself like she's never spoken before, that's why she put her name on the work, my favorite album
Haunted is my favorite song from this album.
It’s so pulsating and full of dark energy. It’s literally unlike anything else in her discography.
This album definitely has a story, but its less clear-cut than Lemonade. The two are very much linked in my opinion; this was released around the time that Jay-Z was cheating on Beyonce.
I think the first 7 tracks depict Beyonce trying to win Jay-Z back from the other woman/women and then realizing that all she's ever done is try to appeal to the men in her life. From the judges panel in Pretty Hurts to Jay-Z silhouetted in the audience in Partition, she's always trying to be the "girl you like."
Rocket through XO is an interlude where she starts to see herself as Jay-Z's equal, but he still doesn't see her that way. Even the happiest lines of XO - "I want to give you everything" - beg the question "why won't you let me?"
Then, Flawless through Blue is her trying to pretend everything is fine. She's telling us she's perfect, that their love is still a superpower, that she's gone through worse things like her miscarriage, and that Jay-Z gave her the greatest gift she's ever received: Blue Ivy. To me, it's like she's trying to rationalize it in her brain and pretend like everything is fine.
I don't think the events leading up to Lemonade were the only time that Jay-Z cheated. I think this has been an ongoing struggle that he only now grew out of (hopefully). I also think that Beyonce has stayed because she so desperately wants to avoid having her parents' marriage (even though Tina is much happier with her current husband).
These are all just my theories, though.
I don't think Beyoncé's music should always be read as autobiographical. In a way, it limits appreciation of her creativity to always filter her art through her lived experience. There's an interview with AP in
2006 where Beyonce talks about being worried people would listen to BDay and assume it's about her personal life. Not saying that there are no autobiographical elements to her music, but love is the subject of like 90% of songs. Everything is a story she wants to tell, but not necessarily about her self. I get annoyed when under every Beyonce video is someone commenting about Jay Z cheating like damn, can people talk about the creativity of the video, the references she's mixing, the sounds she's exploring. Anything else lol.
@@ad2094 That's a very valid point! I agree that not all her music should be read as autobiographical, but this is her self-titled album. Also, I'm not trying to find some higher answer here. I just like the puzzle behind it and, like I said, these are just my theories. I also tend to think a lot about whether any of Beyoncés music is anything less than 100% manufactured. I've loved her music my whole life, but I'm always a little afraid it's all just an act designed to sell. In the end, I don't guess it matters 😄
this is absolutely one of my favorite Beyoncé albums it’s so underrated and have some of the best hidden gems Ghost/Haunted, Jealous, No Angel, Blow, etc
also on Superpower Kelly and Michelle have some hidden vocals at the end of the song they are also in the video at that moment which is awesome

You should check out the album ‘4’. It was the album between her biggest commercial era (I Am Sasha Fierce) and the ground breaking digital drop Self Titled and was a very RnB album during the EDM singles era
Since you are going back you should react to her album 4. Probably her best album vocally, much more of a traditional R&B sound and one of my personal favourites.
That “heyyy mrs Carter” sample is from her mrs Carter tour 2013, she was in the middle of the tour while making the album so the 2nd half of the tour she made this album the “main attraction” of the tour. The tour lasted for an entire year if you’re wondering how the hell she pulled that off 💀
I actually think this is Beyonce's magnum opus, not Lemonade. But I love that she is an artist who has multiple standouts in her discography. I am Sasha Fierce is it's own beast, so is B'Day, so is 4 and so on.
I definitely agree that this album is her magnum opus (not discrediting any of her albums before or after). Beyonce walked so Lemonade could soar. In saying this, i LOVE all albums!!!!

i feel like lemonade is like the epitome of what an artist can hope to achieve when creating something that will last in people’s minds. self-titled may not be as emotionally gripping but is also a beautiful facet she showed everyone.
And the thing is, these songs sound even better live!

I love this album. The whole ablum is about finding happiness and feeling undesirable. The sexual songs before Partition where all about the performance and then Partition is about wanted to be good enough for her husband. “ I just want to be that girl you like”. Also in Haunted, in the beginning you here a young Beyoncé win a pageant award and the lady pronounced her name wrong. And then at the end of the album blue pronounces her name wrong again but instead it’s during a time where beyonce has finally found her happiness: Through Blue 💙
This album is so damn good, can't really pick my favourite album of hers because they are all incredible. But this one has to be top 3

Its a visual album so next time u watch it watch all the videos in order because there is a chronological sense to the tracks. It starts with showing how being in pageants and talent shows as a child can distort your ideas of beauty and damage your confidence as an adult and how the images in the media and magazines can cause women to feel like they r never enough. Throughout the album she shows how these feelings carry over to relationships and then marriage and then flawless is about regaining that confidence by telling yourself that u r perfect no matter what society says, At the end with Heaven and Blue she talks about how experiencing loss and motherhood puts everything in perspective and how she realizes what really matters in life.
Given all of that, it means basically her finding herself during this journey, as a human I suppose. Which is Beyoncé. Given the title of the album.

You have to watch the visual album for this album. It's beyond beautiful and her first successful visual album. She tried to that with B'DAY but it didn't go the way she wanted it to. This visual album did!
There are some songs that have 2 parts and were made to be separate and you can see it in the videos tracklist. For example, after Pretty Hurts, Ghost is the next and then Haunted; after No Angel, Yonce is the next and then Partition. Flawless really is the mix of 3 songs

This is the album where she was dealing with motherhood. This is a "Look. Mothers can still be sexy and interesting after children" album. People criticized her for this album by saying it was too oversexualizing. How many male artists do worse, though?
She was rediscovering her sensual awareness after having a child. Trying to keep the fires at home burning while coming to terms of her new title, and letting others know that wives and mothers are still sensual women not to be taken for granted. There are insecurities when a woman's identity changes for the sake of titles put on her. She still has complicated issues, but none the less, she deserves admiration like she did when she was just your ideal "it" girl.

She performed snippets from this album on the MTV VMA's and received the Michael Jackson video Vanguard award that night. It is an amazing performance. Like getting a mini concert. Blue, Jay, and Kelly were there in the audience cheering her on.

That's why Lemonade hit that hard. Because she was being vulnerable, what in my opinion is her best "side", but talking shit at the same time. It was a fucking masterpiece. But Black is King was a fully beautiful masterpiece that you should see and experience. Also Everything is Love, but that was like more "here we are the carters with some cool songs"

This was a visual album. The songs of the album function better with the visual, because without that, the album wasn't sence and function with that. Because i easy without the first time and it's have weird experience, so i easy the visual and has been very better with that. Also, this album was very experimental, it's was not album for radios hits like before in her four first albums and features a severely dark tone musically and lyrically. And she remains of the era who Madonna have this before with Erotica in this album. And i was surprised that it's didn't just about sex. It's about love, romance, racism, motherhood, death brutally (''XO'' was a legacy of the tragedy in space of 1986 and peoples to lost a person in accident or brutally), problem of couple and oral sex. ''Beyonce'' really risk in this to have a more trash side to herself in the album to have before. This album was so dark and very personal. And i was also suprised that the ''Drunk in Love'' was very dark less radio-friendly to ''XO'' (depist it's was a RnB song), released the same day from ''XO'' and was her biggest hit of the album worldwide. This album cimented her in a icon of music industry and was very influenced many artists to have today, by her music and also by the way the marketing was planned in this surprise album (because it's was released without annoncements or promotion).
