The ADHD Test (Quick Identification of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

  • This is the official ADHD Test for adults.
Important: Everybody kind of does these things, only if you do these considerably more than others however, should you assign that criteria to yourself.
In this video I hope to help people with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) quickly test ADHD by themselves, without having to go to a therapist. To do this I've listed 14 criteria, as published by the APA (American Psychology Association), which are known to be affiliated with ADHD. If you you've identified 8 or more of those 14 criteria to fit to you, then you most likely have ADHD.
The test critera are as follows:
    1. You have trouble sitting still
    2. You're quickly distracted by different things that are stimulating
    3. You experience difficulty when having to concentrate on tasks or games that don't interest you, for a longer period of time
    4. You quickly switch from one activity to another, leaving the other unfinished
    5. You can't keep internally still
    6. In group constellations, you can't wait until its your turn
    7. You often know the answer to a question before a person has finished asking it
    8. You have trouble fulfilling tasks
    9. You experience difficulty when having to play calmly
    10. You often don't think things through before you do the, which got you the reputation of being a risk-taker
    11. You often loose things that you need in order to do homework, complete assignment..or get home
    12. You often disrupt others
    13. You talk a lot
    14. You often don't seem to be listening when other people are talking
I did not make up these critera. I obtained them from: www.psychiatry.org/patients-f...
Think of these criteria as sort of like an ADHD/ADD Quiz that you can take by yourself.
I also used this book to help me make this video: www.amazon.com/Attention-Defi...

I'm confused by that. Like. I understand sitting still doing something. But doing nothing/doing something dull isn't, people don't do that, right? I don't understand doing something you aren't at least partially involved/interested in or something you aren't pressured to do.

For all my fellow adhd’ers with no patience for 8 minutes:
    1. Cannot sit still, always moving or fidgeting
    2. Easily distracted, focus shifts often or can’t be controlled
    3. focusing on something you have no interest in is nearly impossible and very exhausting
    4. switching tasks/ focus/ interest very often and fast
    5. internal restlessness, you cannot relax easily. You have racing thoughts or you just feel physically and mentally over-energized (hyperactivity)
    6. You cannot wait, you are impatient, queues are horrible, other people are annoyingly slow
    7. you finish other peoples sentences often bc you’re impatient
    8. You have trouble completing tasks, no stamina even tho you were very motivated in the beginning
    9. You’re usually not very calm, you’re easily tempered and can get very emotional (it can be also very hard to control your emotions)
    10. You’re not thinking decisions through, you act impulsive (e.g. interrupting, buying a lot of things, binge eating) (he said bank rubbing and murder but that wouldn’t be my first thought tbh)
    11. You often loose and forget a lot of things (bad working memory)
    12. You disrupt others (bc you can’t wait and easily forget things)
    13. You talk a lot (your brain jumps from one point to another very fast, fast flow of thoughts)
    14. Staying focused on attentive listening is hard, therefore you can seem like you’re not listening
    For me there’s also:
    - It’s hard to structure things, to organize and plan
-sometimes extrem mood swings (overly happy then depressed)
    - procrastinating a lot bc of lacking motivation (house chores are very annoying)
    - easily overwhelmed and resigning bc of too much input or
    - extremely bored without any (to the point of boredom-depression)
    - sometimes my brain is paralyzed and can’t process information (bc of overwhelm usually with negative emotions such as depression and/or anxiety)
-ping pong thoughts, I get lost in thoughts, chaotic thinking
-low self worth bc of negative experiences (e.g. in school, with peers, maybe you got teased a lot)
    - comorbide depression, anxiety, eating disorder, etc …. -> Can be overlooked bc of this
-you can’t filter information (what is important? What is a priority?)
    - you just feel different, bc your brain processes information differently
    - big changes and new situations make the symptoms a lot worse (like moving out, divorce, entering work-life / uni …)
-being hungry and tired makes the symptoms also very visible and prominent / worse
-black and white thinking/ all or nothing/ perfectionist/ never reaching your own high standards and goals bc you get overwhelmed by too much information to process and work with
But don’t forget the positive: you’re also creative, generous, loving, unique, open minded (etc.) and overall a wonderful person despite of all the struggles

Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. I got diagnosed with adhd last month. Before getting diagnosed, I always dazed off when listening to long conversations. I even watched every single video on youtube at 2x speed, because they felt so slow. I stopped doing things I thought were ‘good enough’ (although they weren’t quite finished) and most importantly I multitasked everything (I solved a rubiks cube while watching a movie cos my hands were bored). I am so glad i got diagnosed, because now I can finally understand why I’m a bit different from others and try different methods that might work for my when doing my tasks and everyday chores.

Lately I've been questioning if I have adhd or not, I'm a little nervous to go to a doctor or let my family /friends know (because I've been judged by an ex-friend after telling them I think I might have adhd) so I'm hoping if someone with adhd or a doctor who can recognize adhd can help me our here and let me know if there's a possibility I have adhd or not. Here's a list of things I do that are listed in the video:
    1. I have trouble sitting still: I often find myself playing with my hands/jewelry, kicking my feet, playing with my clothes, shake my leg, etc the only time I can ever sit still is when something catches my full attention which barely happens at all
    2. You're quickly distracted by things that are stimulating: I do get distracted quite easily. Example: I get distracted when someone I find attractive walks by, and think about them for the next 5 minute while my teacher is giving a lecture. (this has happened multiple times to me before especially in the classroom) If I don't find interest in something, my mind will drift to something else like the sound of chewing gum or someone tapping their pencil since those thing annoy me I'll end up paying more attention to those little things instead of what's important or the task.
    3. You find it difficult to focus of tasks that don't interest you: and the ending of number 2 leads into this one, number 3. It is very hard for me to focus on certain tasks like cleaning my room, doing homework, reading a book for school, taking a test, etc because those things don't interest me. For example when I'm cleaning my room I always get distracted by something like a bottle laying the floor or something.
    4. You often switch from another activity to another: This happens a ton I know I said this for all the other things, but it does happen a lot. One time I was working on a digital piece of artwork and I ended up rushing at the end because I wanted to finish it and move on to writing a piece for a book. Another day I was working out because I wanted to get in shape, but then days after I found myself abandoning the workout routine to paint or something.
    5. You're internally Restless: I was about to say this doesn't happen to me, but I realized it does. I always have to be doing something like listening to music, watching a show, drawing, singing, I have to do something or else I become cranky because I don't fulfill the needs for my entertainment.
    6. You often can't wait your turn: now this one doesn't happen as much, but it depends on what I waiting on. Like if my little brother's struggling to read a sentence in a book, I'll finish it for him so I can say what I need to say.
    7. You blurt of things: I've blurted a few times, but only in elementary. Now I don't blurt at all, or not yet. I'm at least able to control the blurting out bit.
    8. It's difficult for you to play calmly: It can be difficult for me to play calmly. Often when I'm not able to do something right I find myself really angered, and I can get overly excited over things as well.
    9. You're very rash in your decision making: The only time I feel like I can relate to this is when I'm sad or angry, I often times lash out at others sometimes physically hurting them which I'm not proud of.
    10. You often lose essential things: I do loose things a lot like a calculator, a straw, a pair of shoes, clothing, headphones, a charger, etc. The list goes on and on.
    11. You talk a lot: I do talk a lot especially about things I'm passionate about, I feel like I always have to have a response to everything said, but sometimes my anxiety blocks me from speaking out.
    12. You often don't seem to be listening: Like I said before I get easily distracted from certain noises, people etc.
(Thank you, If you actually read all this)

I stumbled across a video, earlier today, that I watched because a lot of my friends have been diagnosed with ADHD. That video was the first time I ever considered that I might also have ADHD.
Now, watching your video, I realized that I probably do have ADHD. Practically the only questions that didn’t scream “this is me!” are the ones I have worked for decades to overcome.
    My mind is blown.

One reason I know I have adhd: I could never focus in school even though I tried very hard, beginning from elementary. I remember asking my brother if it's normal, he said he had problems focusinh too but it went away by puberty, that never happened for me. I feel like adhd is like a sensory overload, you try to listen to the teacher, you notice how their face moves, the background noise, the things on the desk. I noticed it's easier to listen when I close my eyes, but I still loose track. Also the part where you can't finish tasks is very true, losing things. I'm almost 30 and it all makes sense now.

Sometimes, depending on who I’m talking too, I’ll just talk and talk until I get the signs they want to talk too. I have not been diagnosed with ADHD, and I try to avoid the "self-diagnosing pathway.". When I was around 11-15, I overheard my parents talking about the possibility of me having something (not specifically ADHD) after several incidents at school and me getting referred to some "diagnostic testing" by the school because of some "incidents." The teachers described me on my school report as "prone to impulsive behaviors" and "getting carried away" or "frequently forgetting to do basic tasks." Others were nice enough to call me "bubbly" and "have a good sense of humor.".
Examples of these "incidents" this year include:
-I didn't notice my water bottle was overflowing and tipped over on my desk until the teacher told me it was going everywhere. This happened twice in the same room.
-Getting told that we were doing my least favorite sport, netball, and immediately jumping over the tennis net, hitting the concrete ground. So I bleed enough not to do sports. We had a relief/supply teacher, and he was horrified.
-Talking a lot and being told to turn down my volume.
-Doing an assignment the same day it got given. So, I don't forget, and then I accidentally do the assignment again the next day. The teacher said, "What the hell is this?". When I gave him the other assignment the next day, he said, "You already handed it in." Holding up a piece of work I had never seen before.
-Not trying in certain fields of study. For example, I would be immersed in something like biology or chemistry, but I would fall asleep or get bad grades in physics. Like this year, I got an A for biology and a D for physics.
-And pacing a lot when trying to remember things.
At one point, it got so bad that my mom had to write a list of what I had to do to get ready in the morning.
I was a teenager and still am, so I did not understand much. Only to know it was bad.
I did find out while they were talking that they were not going to take me because "it may affect my future and limit my opportunities." My dad is Asian.
I only realized I could have ADHD after I took a quiz with my friends and got 41/50. So, I don't really know.
Thanks for listening to my tedtalk.
    Please give me some advice.

What I don’t understand is how I managed to memorize my mom’s phone number but when it gets to memorizing other phone numbers, it’s impossible. I later learned that people who have ADHD have impaired short term memory. I just wanted to confirm if I was right 😅 and also wanted to know why I remember some things but forgot other things.

For #12: A person can tend to interrupt, be impulsive with words, and get loud with laughter. But “disruptive” can mean throwing fits of different moods. From what I’ve read online, for example, things like fits of anger, untimely waterworks, unyielding in debates, etc. So, it’s way more serious than, say, finishing another’s sentence.

I just want to tell you all how much of a science experiment my brain is... I have Adhd, Ocd, Bpd, MDD (Depression), and Social Anxiety. But I am a gifted child who finds learning fun and stimulating.
You can stop here if you're bored.
I didn't even know for the longest time there was something wrong, I just liked learning and I was a little weird. I used to be the role model of my school, but as I got older everything became less about intelligence and more about organization.
So, I adapted to the roles school wanted me to take, but then I started feeling incomplete. In the time that I had worked on myself just to be at my full potential, I didn't put effort into my friendships to make sure they were healthy, so I started getting lonely.
I still have a lot of trouble, and I'm more emotional than dysfunctional now. I have friends, a best friend, a boy friend (oooh), and I am trying to get a therapist!
Oh no, that's not a happy ending. 😀
Sorry, it is taking me too long to get a therapist. Insurance, personality, travel restrictions, and the fact that pediatric therapists and psychologists suck are all reasons of why I haven't been able to find a therapist.
I had to say something rash on social media to get recognized as not feeling okay. I didn't realized I've been bullied for the whole school year. I reached out and said I knew there was something gravely wrong and my guidance counselor didn't see the severity because I am "put together".
I am put together because if I'm not society criticizes me. So now because I learned to cope, and become a better person I can't be struggling? I HAVE A 15 MINUTE VIDEO OF ME SCREAMING I-
This is what Adhd is, not just the inability to focus or behave. I hid myself so that I wasn't bullied, so I could make it into Treble, so I could be in advanced classes again where people would appreciate my intelligence.
Where did that go? When did my illness consume me? Am I going to be okay?

It’s actually a fifteen question quiz. The first question is “are you ready?” and the answer if you have adhd is “no”.

This is probably the only test ive aced so far. Though adhd helps me in problem solving since i get distracted by small nuances in phrases im presented... After reading it 10x first cause i get sidetracked mid every 2 sentences i read 🤦‍♂️

3:15 Switching from one task to another happens because of difficulty with object permanence. When you're doing a task, it's in front of you. If you get up to answer the door, it's out of sight, out of mind. Unintentionally. You don't even know your focus left the task, cuz you don't remember you were in the middle of something. So once you close the door and go get a drink, you start washing dishes cuz they're in front of you.

Distracting me with the number 2 laugh noise was a good move, my guy. I have to rewind the video now and try to get past it and hear what’s under it xD

    Well this is bonkers!
I went to my psychiatrist because I felt like I shared the symptoms and told them my day to day life. I told them how it made me feel frustrated from a very young age not being stimulated to do mentally challenging work on time and easily getting stimulated. They had me take the TOVA test and from the results they concluded that I only have depression and not ADHD
