What a fantastic clip to see. The boys were top notch, enjoying the moment. Days like this, we never see again. Good times, Fred. You made the day brighter already.
I get the chills and fond memories from watching videos like this. And it makes me wonder if there is anything in "entertainment" today that will bring the same response to anyone 50 years from now.
Oh does that bring a couple tears to the ol eyes. Such a great time growing up. Well Fred Flix, God bless you from this time forward. You make an old sick man feel good.
Sammy was the most completely talented - an extraordinary singer, phenomenal dancer, excellent actor, with a quick wit capable of adlibing his iconic kiss of Archie Bunker . Dino possessed a beautiful voice that can be listened to forever. He was a true comic genius who knew when to act and when to react. He had Olympic-sized pools of cool. And my grannie loved watching him sing in his tuxedo. (I did too!) Johnny was the consummate host, a master of one-liners and comebacks - no one has done late-night better. His interactions with the zoo animals are unparalleled - loving, funny, adversarial, heartbreaking. I think he sings to Bush Dog in Heaven. Frank had his singing heyday in the 40's, proved himself as a great actor in The Manchurian Candidate, and amazed everyone as a guy who danced with Gene Kelly. Although missing in this performance, Rat Packer Peter [Lawford] really did have acting talent and incredible looks in his films of the 40's and 50's. His performance as the beloved "Little Women" character Laurie in the 1949 film contains the single greatest reaction shot ever. Also missing is Joey Bishop who I understand was incredibly underrated. I did enjoy his show!! I wanted to go to Vegas and watch the Rat Pack so bad...
From what I've read, Joey Bishop was supposed to host this event, but since he had a recurring back problem flare up that summer, Johnny took over for him and did a great job at it.
About Peter Lawford, I've read that Frank had a falling out w/ him sometime in 1963 when JFK was supposed to stay w/ Frank out West but instead stayed w/ Bing Crosby because of Frank's shady connections. Frank blamed Peter for this, and this attitude may have lasted until Peter's passing late in 1984.
@@jehobden I have read this same account. The Kennedys had grown concerned about Frank's "friends" and how those connections might be a deterrent to Kennedy's being elected president. Sinatra was broken hearted at the change of visit plans. He had spent a great deal of money and effort on adding and modifying accommodations to his Palm Springs home for JFK and his entourage. Lawford was married to Pat Kennedy, one of JFK's sisters, and Frank felt Peter was not being effective enough in his familial interactions. Peter did fall out of grace and he never got the parts or opportunities to keep his career at a high pace. There is a great "Wild, Wild West" episode with Sammy playing Jeremiah, a former slave and Peter playing an ex-Confederate officer with a connection to him. [Sammy is superb in my opinion.] I found it on You Tube a while back and I would really recommend watching it. It might be on ME TV which is a channel that has been mentioned here on FredFlix.
This is a great vid clip, Fred. They could do it ALL. Sing, dance, act and do comedy. The sun will never set on their ability to entertain. At this very moment, some place in the world someone is watching them in a movie, TV show rerun or on Fred's Flix. Thank you for sharing, Fred.
Fantastic! heard about this from a Dick Van Dyke podcast talk in 2024 Hes 98 years old and lived that Hollywood life back in the Rat Pack and Johnny Carson stardom
These days, I simply refer to time spent on RUclips as "channel surfing," a reference of course to the old days, first when kids held the antennas to get the best possible signal and later, after there were more than just two channels, flipped through the channels until parents said, "Stop." I now have just one "television" channel, Netflix. Fred, you have the only "channel" on RUclips worth anticipating and watching beginning to end.
Younger folks missed sooo much! A lot of us were lucky enough to be around when music was music and performers were "class" acts! Thank-you for you historical videos!
Who knew that Johnny had a decent singing voice? Frank, Sammy, and Dean all had pop #1 hits! Frank had 3, his final one with daughter Nancy in their 1967 smash for 4 weeks at the top: "Something Stupid," and of course his own solo #1 in Jun. 1966 with "Strangers in the Night" and his first #1 in June 1955, "Learnin' The Blues." Dean, who had not had a Top 40 hit since 1958, got his signature song, the #1 spot on the Aug. 15, 1964 Billboard Hot 100, knocking The Beatles title tune, "A Hard Day's Night" off the top spot with his "Everybody Loves Somebody." That title song is on his tombstone. And Sammy had the most unlikely #1 of his long career: the 1971 surprise from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" song, "The Candy Man" in Apr. 1972, hitting #1 for 3 weeks starting in Jun 1972. Johnny didn't have a hit song, but he did have something the others never achieved: a long 29-year television run (Oct. 1962-May 1992) at the top of the late-night tv charts! He has never been topped in that run at the top, although David Letterman had more years as a late-night host, (33), but with the caveat it was with 2 different named shows over 6,080 episodes, the longest-ever for a late-night comic host: "Late Night with David Letterman" (NBC, Feb. 1982-Jun. 1993), and then "Late Show with David Letterman" (CBS, Aug. 1993-May 2015), from Feb. 1982-May 2015.
Fantastic find Fred. The only recorded concert of The Rat Pack in existence. This was to benefit Dismas House the first halfway house for ex-convicts in St Louis . Johnny Carson filled in for an ailing Joey Bishop .This was shown on closed circuit television on June 20 1965. Quincy Jones led The Count Basie Orchestra. Thanks Fred
How lucky we were to be alive when this "perfect storm" of incredible talent walked the stage. This is another great clip to watch over and over again. I was fortunate enough to be at a small dinner party about 20 years ago with Dean Martin's daughter, Gina. It was shortly after she lost her husband (Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys). There were only 6 or 7 guests, so I really had to find great self control and restraint not to geek out and gush. I mean, Dean Martin and The Beach Boys. It was very difficult for a little "nobody" from the Midwest not to be intrusive or inquisitive... But the better Angels of my Nature thankfully rose to the occasion! This was a great way to start the day Fred, and again, my heartfelt thanks. I mean, does it get any better than these guys? Thank you.❤
It really doesn't get any better than those guys, Jan. I always thought similarly great people would follow in their footsteps, but it was not to be. Enjoyed your dinner party story!
Wow! Never saw this clip before. Love the Rat Pack will never see anything like that again ever! Btw don’t forget the Rat pack also included Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.

@@FredFlix Thanks. I rewatched a few times. Johnny had just said, "Get off the stage", to Sammy {who was out of frame}. I get the point he was making now..
Back of the bus? Do they mean singing background vocals? I think Johnny was kidding about usurping Sammy…. By the way, we all know Dean Martin didn’t really go on stage drunk, that was his “gimmick”-but does anyone think that pratfall was deliberate? It looked like he genuinely lost his balance?
I hope Fred won't mind if I promote a great interview he gave w/ Mitchell Hadley published this week on Mitchell's page: www.itsabouttv.com/2019/03/the-its-about-tv-interview-fred-smith.html
Carson is so out of place here. So outclassed by the rest. Embarrassing to watch him trying so hard to up stage the others. Stick to sitting behind a desk. Painful to watch him trying to be cool here. What an ego. At one point he says.. I got this Get off the stage. He's the most overrated comic ever. Just not funny
I surprised that the stage held up under the weight of all of that talent. An amazing clip. Bravo Fred.
Thanks, Gregg. Can you imagine being in the audience and having that memory?
@@FredFlix , if only. Now I know why my mom and dad used to be so enamoured with those guys. Truly gifted.

Who knew Johnny Carson could sing?! That was awesome Fred, thank you.
No Kidding, The King Had Some Pipes on Him.
Johnny's video of his 1960s TONIGHT SHOW clips include a fun & funny duet he did w/ Pearl Bailey of "Our Love Is Here to Stay" from Sept. 1964.
He was also on Sing Along With Mitch. The song on that show was "Mary Lou".

Great comment, Martha. On the few clips I've seen of Joey's talk show, his off-the-cuff remarks were hilarious.

Goodness. Dino really looked like he took a real fall... I'm sure it was an act, but it sure didn't look intentional.
Oh, it was planned; but there was always the risk of getting hurt.
Never see days like this again!
I'm more of an optimist I'm sure there's talent out there just like this.
I'm sure there is too. The question is, would they be promoted in this day and age? Seems to me, actual talent is no longer the #1 criteria.
I'd like to support your optimism, but this level of talent, humor, street smarts... never going to happen again.
Today, a big performance is when they put Lady Gaga, Steven Tyler and Justin Bieber on stage together at the super bowl.
