- When Joni Eareckson Tada was 17, she took a dive into shallow water in the Chesapeake Bay that left her paralyzed from the neck down.
Over 55 years later, Joni has experienced a great deal of debilitating suffering. Even so, her focus is not on the darkness she's been exposed to, but on the light of her Savior in the midst of the valleys.
Her experience has taught her that one cannot hope in their circumstances, but in Christ alone, and that a great way to stir this hope is through singing hymns and spiritual songs rich with scriptural wisdom.
In her book, Songs of Suffering, Joni includes 25 hymns with accompanying devotions and photography designed to spark hope in hardship.

I heard her testimony long ago and it greatly encouraged me. When I was 15 months old I suffered a severe reaction to medication. I was previously a happy toddler who was communicative…after that I said no words, couldn’t walk correctly and had seizures. My parents took me to different doctors they all said the same thing: put me in an institution and let me die…my life wasn’t worth it. My mother especially cried and she prayed 3 things 1) if I was never to walk, speak or live a “normal” life that I would at least be born again and saved; putting my faith in JC. 2) that I would sing his praises and God would put in my heart a love to worship and praise his name. 3) I would tell others what Christ has done and encourage others. It wasn’t an easy road but God heard my mothers prayers and the prayers of many others. I walk just fine, communicate just fine and I love to praise the Lord. I’m now married and have two young children. Although what happened to me was painful and it was a difficult road, God used it all for my good and I can tell you we do serve a mighty God who hears and answers prayers. Christians are called to suffer in this life but we have a Heavenly Father who is with us every step of the way. He is the anchor that holds in spite of the storm. Whatever trial you are facing know you arent alone Christ has been with you will be with you and will continue to be with you until he ushers you into his presence. It will all be worth it once we see Jesus

I've never cried at a video so much or resonated with all said. I have stage 4 cancer and yet I've never loved the Lord more, felt closer to Him nor had such inner joy. I now understand James 1 consider it pure joy!

I know these are big sufferings but the scriptures says they are our light afflictions for now in comparison to the weight of glory you & Joni & many others who suffer..will receive.

You make me smile because I got out of prison in February and was a battered woman in my past…..I am a blood washed child of the most high God! The one and only true God! I feel your peace. I trust the Holy Spirit to lead me every minute of everyday. Love you sister. We are almost home.

Oh how I relate to you Joni, my sister in Christ. The sharing of your stories and your singing of your songs. Your story of trying to play your guitar and having to accept that you no longer can and probably will never play again not in this life. I also had to accept that I probably would not ever play my trumpet again in this life. I have followed your life ever since the early to mid 80's. For going on 8 years now I have suffered with a severe case of CRPS Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. I had to leave my home 2 years ago to a nursing home. My disease had spread over most of my body causing lymphadema in both legs and feet. 2 years ago the CRPS flared up from over doing some physical therapy causing my body to swell up with 90 extra pounds of edema. I still am in the nursing home where I get high doses of pain killers and my legs are wrapped and taken care of by a special trained wound care nurse 4 times weekly. Like you I prayed to our God to make me more like His son Jesus and if that meant the spreading of this disease with no help in sight then so be it. I was 58 when I came down with this and had met the woman that we would plan to be married just 8 months before I came down with this awful malady. We Loved each other so much. I Love your songs especially Alone But Not Alone. I have come so close to Jesus. I have lost so much but I have the promises of Jesus to give me strength that our suffering in this life is nothing compared to the rewards Jesus will bless us with and I believe what the Holy scriptures say. I have wanted to meet you so much. I used to listen to you on the Bott radio station here in St.Louis in the 1980's. I had my own heating and cooling business and kept the radio going back in my shop listening to your show and other Bible teachers that I liked. I never dreamed I would come down with the most painful disease known. I look forward to meeting you in God's Heaven. I would like us to play a song together a hymn, me on trumpet and you singing and playing guitar or piano. I've been up all night listening to music, mostly hymns. I praise the holy name of Jesus. I have been hanging onto His neck so tightly but more importantly He has been hanging onto me. I know that He will not let go of me. God's holy blessings to you Joni. Thank you so much. I can be your friend Pippa. I do Not suffer with loneliness but I do Know what "aloneness" can feel like in a crowd. I Know Pippa we can bring our brokeness and loneliness, pain and sadness to Jesus in prayer.. We still go through tough times but we are given an Inner strength to hold on, have Hope and to Know the strength God gives.
I am able-bodied but I am suffering from depression. That is a terrible illness. Joni gives me a lot of hope in Christ. 😊

The pain, the unending, debilitating pain, relentless and never-ending is enough to grind you to dust. I pray He will always use our praise in pain to glorify his name.
Joni I wanted to tell you that I think of you a lot. With my back pain which is nothing compared to your pain, Joni, I say to myself O Lord remember Joni. My pain is NOTHING.
You’re my example especially when I see you singing in the middle of it. I’m almost exactly your age. I received my Savior in 1967. I was 17 in Egypt.

oh your prayer as a teen Joni, wow. I prayed the Lord to grow my faith and the next month found out I was expecting a baby, which a month later went home to be with Him through miscarriage. It was an answer to that prayer, it grew my faith, through pain. I am SO thankful for you and for your life Joni, how often you have spoken to my heart, your vulnerability is beautiful. I cant wait to hug you in heaven my dear sister in Jesus.

I was drawn back to this video while in prayer with the lord today. Healing from my Lumpectomy from breast cancer and a few other challenges I had to get on my knees, in all my weakness, and pray. Lord I surrender I can’t do anything without you. Please help me, I trust you and I know you love me! ❤ be encouraged God is right there holding your hand.

I have dealt with anxiety on almost a daily basis for more than 30 years when I was diagnosed with schizophrenia but I am free from it now for more than 7 years due to an intervention of God. Knowing that God works in mysterious ways, I have not forgotten how your books and songs have helped me in those dark years of dark depression, giving me hope and courage to keep on going. Now I am working as a Bible teacher in a small church for more than 7 years after being released from the symptoms of schizophrenia. Each day I live, I now can enjoy living it to the full for Jesus. Praise the LORD!

To this day it still torments my mind what my sister went through. At a year old she came down with spinal meningitis. By 2 she was crippled from the neck down unable to walk/talk and had to be fed through a tube. The only communication she had was her radiant smile. She was bedridden until she died at age 18. I was 16 when she died. I miss her greatly but another part of me is glad she doesn’t have to suffer anymore. If she hurt anywhere she wasn’t able to communicate it. If she had a itch she could not reach it or tell anyone. The same year she went in a hospital I was born where she spent her whole life. Me & my mom was not able to form a bond because she turned to alcohol to numb the pain. I had a difficult childhood but I am able to handle it because nothing in my life could ever compare to her suffering….. God bless you all and NEVER give up ❤

Her smile is everything. Her suffering is almost unimaginable. You can feel her submission to and love of the Savior.
I don't comment on videos, I just watch them. But the words you speak are true & I'm blessed by your sweetness before God. This battle is daily so I thank him for brothers & sisters in the trenches with me, who are calling God faithful & good. And for the hope of heaven before us!

I heard what Joni said..she'd rather be in that chair & have Christ as she now knows Him, than to be on her feet but not have Him in her life.
This video of Joni really touched me..showing herself so vulnerable yet intentional in her abiding with Christ..just her tenacity to keep on keeping on. She is inspiring us all on! "My paralysis is about knowing Jesus better".
I like also:"heart..you are not going to go down that grim, dark road to depression. You have been there one, two, many times & its going to rip you apart..I got to be constantly driving it..to calvary every morning...go find Jesus-Hes the only One who will satisfy". Wow-pulling down those strongholds.

I miss hymns. For some reason hymns aren't wanted in most churches anymore. I suppose it's because hymns mention many times about Israel, the stories of the Israelites in the first testament. A lot of churches don't like talking about the Israelites when we too act just like they did before we were saved from our sins.
I pray one day churches will realize how much we need hymns. They are a powerful part of the good news of Jesus.
Hymns are great, but some modern worship songs and praise songs have really helped me battle sin issues. I love faster paced music and God knows it does help me! So, I think it just depends on the person and the church. I like both hymns and modern songs. If they glorify God and lead us deeper into our faith, then I think Jesus is honored by that.
When I was a teenager I read Joni's first book - and I prayed LORD HELP JONI. I am now 65 - and I pray LORD HELP JONI. One day you will know how many people The Lord JESUS has touched through YOU.
She is such an inspiration. I read her book back in the 70s when I was home from school due to being sick. My mom thought I'd like it. I was an unbeliever at the time, but her story always stayed with me as an authentic Christian witness. She is one of the most committed and doctrinally sound believers I've ever come across. I've been through cancer four times and am suffering physically and mentally (depression/anxiety) from all the treatments. Her story is a great reminder to me to persevere.

I understand how you must be feeling..I know what anxiety & panic attacks are all about..then continual fatigue either breathlessness. I encourage you to look up, your Redemption draws nigh. Listen for the trumpet sound of 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18. Jesus will appear in the clouds soon to take His church to be with Him and join Him for the next step of His plan for us..the wedding feast. He will take us out from the wrath to come..so you keep trusting with your eyes steadfast on Him..reading the word daily..or listening. And sing even when you don't feel like it..a sacrifice of praise..it's power!
And..ask your focus for Lorazapam 1mg to take the edge off..maybe 2 times a day if needed..then cut down to half..yoyo between the doses so you don't get wanting more as they think people do get easily addicted. You sound like you need a break. I know whatvim talking about coz I did have them for a couple of years! Up down, up down..then slowly slowly I feel they are the safest even though they'll say it's addictive. It only stays in the system 4 hrs & half to one mg is not much and anyway..its easy to stop taking them. May the Lord guide & bless you.

I have a brother who is in the same boat as you Joni, he loves the Lord with all his heart but he suffers so with digestive issues and has a large sore on his tailbone and lately he is getting more smaller sores even though he gets out of bed everyday several times. I can see him losing weight from not eating much because he has so much trouble with bowel movements. My heart goes out to him he has a lot of pain to deal with too. He knows about you but he doesn't want to think about it... I guess I can understand I have tried to talk to him about you several times and he turns away. He was 17 when he dove into water like you and broke his neck, he is 62 now and had a pretty active life and did fairly well but time has taken its tole on him and it is hard to see and hear is sufferings, I know you must know. My prayers are for you and your husband, please pray for David my brother in Christ.
Father of Mercy, please help this brother, and help Joni, and help everyone coming to this thread or listening to these hymns and devotions. Help us to find relief in contemplating Jesus, to forget ourselves while we minister to others, and to endure patiently when we have done all we can do and must simply wait on Thee and Christ's returning.

Joni, you are so beautiful inside and out and you use your pain for Jesus’s glory. I’ve lived through stage 3 non hodgekins lymphoma and now 14 years later I suffer from chronic pain. But at least I can walk, albeit with an elbow crutch but you not being able to walk and care for yourself is so much more than anyone could bare. Dearest Joni, you have remained such s blessing to so many Christians, and especially me! I rememeber how blessed I was when I first read your autobiography almost 20 years ago. Thank you remaining so faithful to our Lord Jesus! I can't wait for the day when we are in heaven, and I witness how God will pour blessings upon you for remaing so faithful and true to Him despite your sufferings here. Our Lord and King is so worthy of adoration. Ofcourse, that's hard to explain to an evil and blind world. But at least for those who've been awakened and redeemed by God's grace can comfort each other knowing that infinite love, joy, peace, and comfort are awaiting us when we finally enter His kingdom. The Lord led me here today to show me that He has allowed me to suffer to show me His suffering for me. I will never look at suffering the same way ever again. I noticed that people that go through intense pain/trials for a long time really know Jesus in a very close way. And isn’t that the best gift to obtain. To be dependent on the Lord in that way gives so much peace. Because Jesus is everything and brings joy even through the trials. Jesus you are so good.
Joni, Whenever I am tempted to complain about my life and any state that I am in that isn’t comfortable, I need to think of you in your life and what you have endured. Dear Joni, Jesus’ Love for you is evident in your love and faithfulness to Him. There is no doubt in my mind that your suffering and response has been a life-changing testimony for thousands. I love the hymns: Abide with me, Be still my soul and others that mirror your life of steadfast faith in Jesus. He is coming very soon and we will all be whole again- What a day that will be, when our Jesus we shall see/what a day, glorious day that will be!!!👑❤️🙏🏻

I have found so much encouragement from Joni over the years. So many times I have been driven to my knees in prayer. To say I'm grateful for Jesus is an understatement. Maybe some people are just born tough and don't need anyone to get through life, but that's not me. I need Him every moment of every day.

I have experienced the nearness of God in pain , severe post OP PAIN , after having all the pain medicine I could have , praying for God to relieve the terrible pain , It’s as if the Holy Spirit told me to sing to Him in Praise .. I put on Maranatha music and sang in my pain , a flood of JOY well ed up in my soul , the Lord was with me … I was able to go to sleep and in the morning that horrific pain had stopped … now that I have Rheumatoid arthritis , I’ve been thinking about chronic suffering . Let suffering do it perfect work , lean on on the Lord , His will is perfect .

WOW. It’s 4:10 in the morning and I can relate about the pain and not being able to stay asleep. I started3 years ago when waking I would start praying with those video of prayers on my Ipad and this morning your video came up. I needed that testimony .
Thank you. I was so negative this morning and having so much pain when I got up to go to BR , WHEN I came back to bed and I listened to you , I got encouragement. God was hearing my prayer to help me deal with this situation and pain. Your testimony was what I needed to hear. I’m 82 yeers old and it’s hard getting old . falling not able to do all the things I used to do, it’s hard, PAIN . Suffering and realizing our Lord suffered and died on the cross because He loved us!

I just got your book as a belated Mother’s Day gift, from my eldest daughter and it is so beautiful. I’ve had ME/CFS for 17 years (am almost 73!) and 2 1/2 years ago got chronic pain in my hips and one buttock. Organically nothing is wrong and 3 months ago I found I had neuroplastic pain, my brain giving the wrong message. There are ways to retire the brain,but it still takes up to 1 year. I hope with all my heart Jesus comes this year still. Cannot wait to sing with all the saints. Guess we will have one ew language? And to meet you! You haven been a beacon forme for many years! Thank you Lord for Joni and her testimony in suffering. Her testimony has made all the difference in my faith walk in seeing and knowing that God is truly near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. I witnessed the same transformation in my daughter who battled ALL for 4 years and died at age 17. After a brief struggle with her faith in God's goodness, she radiated His love and nearness. I got the privilege to witness it in our journey in this path of Shayne's suffering. May I never stray from His intimacy in my life whatever trials or physical suffering may come before I return to Him. Thank you Joni for this vulnerable video this many years later in your life.

When I received Jesus as my Savior, back in 1976, I listened to Christian radio everyday. You were one of my first teachers. Thank so mucho for your testimony. What a wonderful video! Thank you for your commitment to Jesus during times of great suffering. The old hymns I learned as a child will sometimes reappear in my head without warning and bring great comfort. I am thankful the spirit reminds me of their importance.
