You look amazing and such gorgeous fabric … plus spare for something equally beautiful. Definitely love this version on you. Well done for stepping out of your comfort zone.
Never really been attracted to the Saltwater but I am now. Love the hack - and the fabric of course 😂😂. Great explanation and demo of the new pattern piece. And yes, your bias method makes sense cos I can never catch it all in the other way and it drives me mad. Happy Sewing😊. Just gonna watch Becs. 😊 Lynne
I love that ruched top hack, it really suits you. And I'm with you on the "too complicated, can't do it" then trying and finding it was far easier than expected!
Last year i was recovering from chemotherapy and brutal surgery for ovarian cancer. My son's wedding was coming up,i thought i want going to survive long enough for it. I planned on making the Saltwater, but stride treatment less to what age i felt like i had the shoulders of an American linebacker. I lost confidence and even up buying RTW. I remind myself of what is important but a part of me does wish I'd just had a little bit of confidence. I am going to make the dress but i think i am going to do the hack which you did
Looks great - love the colours and the style - I'm so pleased you mentioned how easy bust dart manipulation is because people seem to be so scared of it but it is quite straightforward once you are shown the basics.
Ruan, that is beautiful and suits you so much! I wasn't that keen on the pattern initially, but that hack elevates it to a new level. You do glow in those colours, and you brighten my day definitely!
@@theyorkshiresewgirlyes!! I'm a fan of Fri Pattern CO. Really like her attitude (and patterns!) Ruan I would just like to say how much I enjoy watching your vlogs ❤ I used to subscribe to sooo many diff channels and I overwhelmed myself and wasn't productive... Now I've limited myself to channels that are more suited to me and YOU are one of them! Partly because our body shapes are similar (that helps with sewing) and mainly because I love your banter, attitude and accent 😜 tee he hee Thank you so much for providing a happy place and inspo to Sew! I too am often overwhelmed at trying new techniques and am a visual learner. You are so relatable, thank u 👏
I’ve made 6 saltwater slip dresses. I love the pattern, however, I haven’t done the hack yet but after seeing Rachel from stitched up with her version and now your version, I’m definitely going to do it. Thank you for sharing your info on it and yours is incredible on you x
I love the ruching!! I am not a fan of darts since my body has changed, I prefer gathers...It looks fabulous! Oh my!! I love your channel!! You are hysterical!! When you were talking about all the challenges you faced--I'm like "YES< YES< YES-right there with you"!! ROTFL!! It is gorgeous, and you look stunning in it!! I wish I had your height! :+)
Hi Ruan just to let you know apart from absolutely love your saltwater dress, I managed to find the fabric in Boyes for £4.50 per metre such a bargain and thought you might like to pass this on to your followers OR buy yourself some more of this gorgeous fabric, I intend to make your hacked version of the saltwater dress. Happy sewing and thank you so very much for sharing your expertise Carole
Love the hack! Love the fabric! Love how it looks on you! I do the same with Bias binding as I always miss catching the back down! It’s a definite make for me when I get home! ❤
I really like this hack and am even more tempted to try it after seeing yours. The ruched top gives the dress a bit more structure along with the empire line seam. I think it will suit my body shape better. Thanks for the thorough review!
It’s a lovely make, and the colour suits you well. Incidentally, I’ve also purchased the same fabric from Sew Essential last week. I really love the red & pink print!👍
I love the saltwater dress I’m on my second one but would have loved to do the hack so I’m just going to make another one 😂yours is gorgeous love the ties tied at the shoulders
Absolutely love it on you! I may well do the hack too. I haven't made one for myself - made one for my daughter but not me...I might make one now!!! Thanks for sharing x
Fabulous dress; it's perfect for you and a very successful hack. No, I'm not yet converted to animal print, but I love it on other people. I do bias binding as you did. Doing it the other way around is too tricky. I may make a Saltwater slip, having thought it wouldn't suit me being an older lady, but I'd wear with with a t-shirt.
Love your hack Ryan. It looks beautiful on you. I would love to be able to wear something like that but I'm afraid I'm of the age where I really need sleeves.
Lovely dress! I was looking at this fabric at Rainbow fabrics when they had this in their drop, but didn't have the courage for it. Then I watched your fabric haul vlog, and managed to get 2 meters of it from Rainbow. It has now arrived and it is ready to be cut out. Thinking about a Donny shirt hack to make it a dress, but I haven't decided yet :)
Fantastic--it suits you so well! I hadn't been interested in the original dress but with that hack I am very tempted to go for it! Love, love, love the fabric!
The Saltwater is such a good pattern for hacking. It’s one of the reasons why I bought it. The original is pretty basic maybe that’s why people are ho-hum about it, but the hack versions are pretty awesome including this one. Love the color and matching earrings!
I like the ruched bodice, it would make a cute top. I don't think 3 bows are too many but the dress also looks good without the waist tie if you're concerned that you resemble a French Rococo courtesan 😉
Your dress hack looks lovely but so do your other versions. I like the ruching over the bust as it’s very flattering.i think the waist tie also looks very nice. 😊
Ruan another winner! Dress looks lovely! I watch all you vlogs and the they really cheer me up on not so good days. Your adventures with the NSS are really hilarious and very informative. Rachel’s destash episode was so funny! 😂😂 I have a question, how, how, how do you keep your Babylock Acclaim Overlocker so clean -it’s always lint and dust free? It always looks so pristine! I have the same machine, no matter how hard I try I still have lint and threads and blade shavings sticking to the machine. Any tips would be appreciated!
Thank you so much! It’s probably because you can’t see it up close 🤪. I do clean it every other garment just to keep on top of it. I hoover bits out and use a microfibre cloth x
Ruan all your versions are beautiful. I like both. I agree with your method of adding the bias . I always have problems if I try the way they tell you and then it's a glaring mistake to me even if others don't see it. I love all your pink and red. You're encouraging me to use bright colors too.
Absolutely gorgeous just bought this pattern pdf to put together this afternoon love the original but also love your hack thank you so much for sharing 🌟💐
This is the first time I’ve heard of this hack, and I like it! Your dress is lovely, Ruan. I’ll have to try it; that’s saying a lot for me, as I’ve avoided regular slip dresses so far. You’ve finally sold me! 😘
I just watched Becs and so popped over to yours straight away (curiosity killed the cat and all that😂) I just wanted to say I voted for the saltwater hacked dress (I wasn’t keen on the original version) and am thrilled with how it’s turned out, you look amazing. The rouching makes it look so slimming. Now that I’m converted I’m going to buy this and get cracking on one, I just need to figure out how to do the shoulder straps wide enough to cover bra straps without wrecking the look. Oh I love the shoulder bows btw, sooo cute and feminine (it takes the nighty look away😅). We’re mid winter here in Australia and coming home after dropping the grandies off at school having had to clear the ice off the windscreen, making a hot cuppa to thaw out then proceeding to make a summer frock feels a bit strange. 🤪
Your version is absolutely glorious Ruan, knocking it out the park again! And now I need to make another one, once I got round the video a few times it was all go go go!
Gorgeous Ruan. I’ve go this fabric too. ❤ I have been contemplating this hack but like you was like, mmm not sure I can do it. Might just have to try it now. 😊
The hack looks fab on you and your bust is perfect,it really suits you.I like both of the saltwater slip dresses. You explained the hack great but I think it would be nice to have a tutorial.
I tracked one of the bus tape makers to Germany, for a good deal given i live in Europe. So excited. Paid for it...... And they are not allowed to sell electrical equipment to Switzerland. Fair enough but i have bought electrical equipment from Germany, but i know that there are probably different rules for different equipment. I was not paying chf250, which was the other possibility. Finally tracked one down for half that price again, in the UK. Happily waiting for it .i think it's brand new :0)
That dress and fabric looks great on you Ruan! I actually like it better than the version with the bra sliders. Or..🤣...whichever version you make for you I love but if I ever attempt it would prefer not to have to fuss with the slides. Seem to be in the summer doldrums right now...have some extra time and need to get up off watching videos and sew. xx Karen
Love this fabric and this version on you, perfect combination of style & colour😍 I need to try this hack. I’m wondering if I could make the ruched section slightly longer then have the ties at same level to pull it in at that point, do you think that would work?
❤❤❤Now I have to buy this pattern!
he he!
I always start on the back with my bias binding. It is so much easier!!
Yes!
You look amazing and such gorgeous fabric … plus spare for something equally beautiful. Definitely love this version on you. Well done for stepping out of your comfort zone.

Thanks so much lovely 🥰
The dress is cute with the tie around the waist, but it is equally cute without the tie. I like this version better than the original Saltwater.
Thank you!
I love that ruched top hack, it really suits you. And I'm with you on the "too complicated, can't do it" then trying and finding it was far easier than expected!
Yes! We need to just be brave don’t we!
Love your dress. It looks fantastic on you. I think I prefer the ruched Saltwater Slip dress.
Thank you! A few people have said that 😊
That dress is the absolutely perfect match for the fabric
Thank you!!
thank you for sharing how you hacked the bodice pattern for ruching; the dress fits you wonderfully

Yes! That’s probably the same for a lot of things. We just need to go for it don’t we!
Love the saltwater hack. Looks fab in that fabric xxx
Thank you lovely ladies x
I love it and I think I like it more than the original. I like the bows and I think that the cinch in is very flattering! ❤
Awww thank you!
Absolutely fabulous dress !!!! ❤
Thank you! 😊
Fabulous!! Never really. Thought about the saltwater but seeing those ties at the shoulder … 🤔
Looks wonderful on you
Ooh could definitely see you in this pattern!
Nice hack and what a fun fabric! Very pretty dress.
Thank you! 😊
Me again! Yes, red and pink look stunning on you.
What a beautiful dress, you are beaming! Your love for animal prints is so great, love it!
Thank you so much!
Ruan, that is beautiful and suits you so much! I wasn't that keen on the pattern initially, but that hack elevates it to a new level. You do glow in those colours, and you brighten my day definitely!
Awwww that made me smile 😊
You inspired me with that fabric and now I have a new Donny shirt in it. Gorgeous dopamine dressing. X
