I love buying video game consoles from Goodwill - and it's even better when I get 18 of them at one time! I bought 18 "untested" handheld Nintendo consoles from goodwill (notice the quotation marks...), and the results are questionable. I go through and test each of these and attempt to fix the Nintendo consoles from goodwill that I can. Goodwill appartently has no shortage of consoles, so I'll definitely be buying some more video game consoles from Goodwill soon - lemme know what I should buy!

Is it me or does anyone else feel sad when those ds's with the stickers came up on the video. The reason why I feel sad is because to that kid that ds probably meant the world to him or her to stylized it to their standard with their favorite stickers that possibly a past family member gave them or that little bit of money they saved up just to put their favorite stickers on it or anything like that. It makes me realize how time flies by and how life is a fragile thing and makes me long for the days of the past of seeing my family members and showing them my ds when I got it.

Most of these fixes are fairly straightforward (with the right skills), just gotta buy some additional components. Just a tip. Soak the battery terminals in white vinegar instead of isopropyl alcohol. The vinegar is a base that counteracts the battery acid and will break it down in less than five minutes. THEN clean off the vinegar with the alcohol. I've saved many remotes and controllers using this method.

I actually used to work for Goodwill and for the branch I worked for (and I’m fairly sure it’s the same for most branches) we’re told to not test electronics because we’d either not have what we needed to properly test to make sure it’s working, or it’d just take too much time. Of course, I’m not saying it’s impossible they were tested, I’m just saying it’s unlikely.

Interesting that you bought these from a store associated with a charity.
As someone whose Mum has volunteered at a Salvation Army store, and who has briefly volunteered herself, I know if these consoles were donated to our store, they'd go straight in the bin.
In our store, these consoles not only have to be tested to ensure that they work, but have to be _test tagged_ by an electrician.
Then again, Australia seems to be a lot more stringent in that regard. Probably why I have yet to see a Goodwill shop or any sign of Goodwill here in Australia.

    • @jrob0021

Salvation Army is generally a much better charity store than goodwill. Goodwill claims to be charity, but they aren’t. They donate very little of their profits to actual charity. So they’re basically just taking people’s free stuff and selling for huge profits lol

I used to buy and sell video games on ebay, and goodwill was one of the best places to buy from, but not every auction they had was good. You've got to have a feel for it, and know which lots are for a console and games from a kid that got tired of them, and which lots are a bunch of leftover junk that nobody wanted. GBA SP and DS were my favorite games to deal with, but the DS did break easily, you've got to watch for that.

a year or 2 ago, my neighbors had a yard sale. their daughter i went to school with (she is younger) didn't want her nintendo ds lite. they said it was code problems... but it doesn't take an SD card (came with it) it also had a high quality hardly scratched if even at all with quite a few games, quite a few stylisus, (idk how to spell that) the stylisus were varying sizes but were cool. it also had a plastic stylus carrying case. it was a blue nintendo ds lite, with no charger, but a micro usb B worked fine. it works perfectly. i want another DSI but i left it in my school locker in middle school many years ago (they donated it to good will without telliong me) now someone has like over $30 worth of free games pre installed and my favorite cartridge and the only one i didn't complete..... the DS lite was $10 and incase you were wondering... the SD card had no nintendo stuff, just family photos and some traumatizing "stuff" in between my friends birthday parties...... in all my DSI is gone, but my gameboy advance with a normal audio jack is gone, and my gameboy advance sp speaker broke because i played my rave music too loud in "The Sims Bustin' Out" so i have no audio. the ds lite is a good substitution. has shared play, picto chat, ds cartridge and gba cartridge play, but sadly the instruction manual specifically states that you can't play Game boy or Game boy color games, which you will find out by trying to fit a Gameboy cartridge past a cartridge spacer block... idk what to think... i wanted a ds lite to play ds and gba games... but now i want my dsi back... they had the legend of zelda four swords aniversery edition for free, which i can never play again because you cant emulate a dsi e-shop game... and i probably cant get it again... its the only version like it that you can play single player! My advice? stay away from handhelds and get a pc or console.

You can also try that in conjunction with a little sand paper to help polish up the terminals.

Buy some electronic contact cleaner from Amazon (WD40 makes it). You can spray that on battery contacts and use a toothbrush to clean...Works extremely well, on any corrosion really, and you don't have to take the battery contacts out to clean them. The cleaner is safe, not greasy, and dries quickly.

Sadly new parts for ds consoles are pretty expensive. You could buy a new one from it, but I don't want to bc my father buyed this dsi for much money back in the day. And it means so much to me still. So how do I replace screens savely. If it's the screens Idk. :(

I work at goodwill and what I know is we have People whose job is to test electronics. if we get a DS, we have a DS charger that we save for charging them and testing them out. the thing is we cant test everything completely, so we have a 24-hour exchange thing if there is something wrong. but we always try to test them to make sure they at least turn on. our location tries not to sell gross or broken things. if we sell something for ebiz we clean them up and then keep them in a little room.
also its super weird that you got a DS from ebiz. our store rules is that we don't sell older game stuff, we only sell newer stuff. if we get a DS it get prices at 19.99 and put in our BTQ cases. stuff like wiis, xboxs, xbox360s, ps 1 2 and 3s all go in our cases. I never check ebiz as I dont really care for shopping on there. so im sure other stores just put anything on there.
sadly I found out thought that most stores are not like ours. most places don't really test them or even have any policy on electronics in case they don't work. it is really annoying and sad. I really like working for my store as we try to be very honest and understanding with everything. for me shopping at some other goodwills it just breaks my heart.

Even if all the consoles worked fine, it still seems like kind of a bad deal for a reseller. If you’re getting into Nintendo handheld consoles refurbing and reselling, you should start off with 1 or 2 cheap consoles and get a feel for the market and learn how to repair at the same time.

I found out the 2ds is a very shitty console. It's like nintendo ruined Them and than put some kind of stuff on the chips. I have had 4 different 2ds boards and they all have it. Like they made a mistake and than had to repair all the boards.
I remember Nintendo sold the 2dsses for cheaper at one point with a free game also. I'm thinking this is because Nintendo knew the boards would break easy in the future. I have never seen this kind of stuff on Any other Nintendo console. Alot of the time the 2ds wont start if the screws are not put in tight.
I think that's why the stuff is on the chips for pressure because they made some kind of production mistake. Replacing parts is easy for the 2ds that's right though. But I would buy a different model if you ask me.

I was just thinking, I have a feeling the next DS will just have a folding screen. I'm watching this on my Galaxy Z Fold 3, and I'm remembering the DS rumors before it came out and all we knew at the time was that it would have 2 screens, and I remember touch screens were brand new Expensive high tech technology that was just invented. I couldn't believe the new Gameboy had a touch screen!! 🤯 haha
So looking from today. I bet the next gen console has a folding screen and may even be a separate thing than the next Gen switch, it could be the switch 2, but man I can see it already, it would be the same form as the DS, except the top screen is a full wide screen and the middle of the screen extends down through the hinge where it has the floor of the game and the HUD overlaid ontop , controls on either side, and a sleek sexy folding screen console.
I hope Nintendo makes this now! But if they do not. In 3 or 4 years, someone will find a way to combine and old Galaxy fold screen and Frankenstein it to a DS and it also plays switch games. It's only a matter of time.
