I'm sorry to hear about your injury and I hope you get well soon! I really appreciate videos like this, since they show how good and inexpensive health care is outside of the USA. I'm planning to finally go FIRE later this year and move to Penang, Malaysia. But last week I ended up at Urgent Care due to a splinter in my foot that got infected. My friends on Facebook joked that it's a good thing it happened in the USA, since "they don't have doctors in Malaysia" and how in Malaysia "they'll get an orangutan to amputate your foot"! I know they were just joking but it shows how little most Americans know about the quality of healthcare overseas. Malaysia has excellent medical care, especially in KL and Penang! I'm applying for the MM2H visa in Sarawak, one of the Malaysian states on the island of Borneo. I had 2 medical exams in Kuching as part of the application process, and the care and facilities were TOP NOTCH, everyone spoke excellent English, and the cost was only $35 for half a day at two medical centers. About 7 years ago when I was in Penang I had an eye exam and glasses made. The level of time and attention they gave me was astounding, for a fraction of what it would cost in the USA.
Malaysia has a great healthcare system, saved my life 40 years ago after accurately diagnosing me with trichinosis and my SIL after her appendix burst. Any Indonesian with money will travel to Malaysia for procedures.
For information Malaysian citizen pay as low as just RM1 for all treatment including the medicine, be it fever, cold, diabetics high blood pressure medicine, cholesterol, x-ray, bone breaking, mri (my late mom) etc at all at the government hospital and clinic. I don't even have to pay because I am a government officer. My father who is a government pensioner don't have to pay either. For dental check-up RM1, tooth extraction, operation and filling rm4 (the last time I did, it is) I don't have to pay but I was lazy at that time to produce gl letter to prove that I work with government and because it's cheap. Even if you are warded it doesn't cost much.. Labor cost just rm80 I guess (correct me because this is what I heard last time).. it definitely cost more for heart implant or other costly surgery procedure but not so much.. Plus if emergency they will treat you first no matter what your background - Malaysian non Malaysian, got money or insurance or non of it.. of course government hospital and clinic are quite busy because many people went there.. so if ones requires place that provide peaceful, private one on one care and non busy treatment they can go to private hospital for that personal treatment and pay extra for it .. however sometimes if they can't handle the case they will send the patient to government hospital too.. (lol I heard a few of this from relative and friends) All in all I am grateful for Malaysia for providing good healthcare for its citizens..

As you can imagine, it's substantially more expensive here than in Malaysia, especially for a whole series of X-rays and CT scans - but still much less than it would be in the U.S. Hope you heal quickly, and see you soon!

Just for the audience here. Malaysia has about 7 hospitals under JCI (joint commission international). Please count how many in other south East Asian countries. Of course you may visit Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital but that defeat the purpose of value for money. May I suggest Gleaneagles , Pantai and Adventist hospitals other than prince court. Depending on your requirements. I heard Pantai has lab for stem cell treatment.
Thanks for sharing your experience and price breakdown. A visit to the ER here in the U.S. even for a small fracture like that would probably start more in the $5000+ range; 2000 would be if you waited and went to a doctor. Anything ER related here is insane
I'm so sorry that you broke your foot and hurt your knee - ouch! But you soldiered through and shared useful information with us - cheerfully too! I hope to travel to Malaysia now and feel I can be fearless because the medical system there is excellent and inexpensive.
FYI Prince court happens to be the most expensive & luxury hospitals in Malaysia, so no surprise there with regrads to the cost you paid. Anyway, there are many other private hospitals around Kuala Lumpur which could have provided you with very similar service or even better at a fraction of the price you paid.
Mate, they're expats. Locals pay less or none at all in government hospitals. * Doctors are highly respected in Malaysia but I feel sorry for the young ones who bear the brunt of trying to sustain of the world's best healthcare systems. They have no life outside the hospital. * I have 4 nieces and 1 nephew who are doctors in Malaysia.

While living in Malaysia about 20 years ago, my American husband fell from the stairs and fractured two bones of the rib cage, he was hospitalized at the Melaka hospital for about 10 days and the bill was less than $75(it would be less for Malaysians). Fast forward 10 years, I had a fall and fractured my collar bone on new year Eve after moving to the US, a visit to the ER without receiving any treatment other than a prescription for painkiller and advice to see an orthopedic specialist, I received a $2k bill after insurance!!
@@zaki-pq1ps I saw an orthopedic afterwards, he recommended a costly surgery but did mention it’s optional. I didn’t opt for that. I went to see a traditional Chinese “tie da” practitioner when I went back to Malaysia. He adjusted the bone back in place, told me to give it 6-8 months to heal. He gave me some herbal medicine that supposed to help with the healing and charged me less than $20 for the visit. He also told me there’s no need to revisit him.
I hope you heal quickly! This is one of my fears. I broke my foot a few years ago right before we went to Japan. It really helped to have a knee scooter for the first couple of weeks. Thanks for sharing your successful experience with medical care over seas. I’m wondering if they offer or prescribe pain meds. My expectation is that narcotics are more carefully controlled. I had my own experienced where I go down in the drain, luckily its dry and not that deep. No physical harm only emotional damaged, coz I got too many spectators. So sorry to hear that you broke your foot. I hope that you do recover quickly. I had my spouse watch the part of you in the hospital, so that he could the great level of care that you received in a foreign country. We are very fortunate that we have Medicare (yep, we are old) and my BCBS from when I retired from the Federal Gov. Spouse had a heart attack (widow maker) in Sept and had a stent an was in the hospital 4 days, and it was paid in full. He has also been going to cardiac rehab (33 times so far and will finish next week after 3 more). They took him immediately, since he was having an active heart attack. Unfortunately, our son does not have such great insurance and would really think twice about going to the ER. Also, if I could trade having Medicare for being in my 40s or 50s again, I would do it in a minute!

Bummer, that will slow you down for awhile! Glad you got good care, and the cost wasn't too bad! Recently, I was distracted and tripped on a concrete handicap ramp, skinned my hands and knees but otherwise okay. Those ramps are dangerous! I almost tripped on one at the post office while carrying a big box. Best wishes on a full recovery! 🙂

Private hospital, for us Lower income Malaysian are expensive but the service is the top notch..while government hospital, cheap for malaysian, but to many patients for the medical staff to care of..
I think the ambulance charges in Msia is not comparable from USA. Cause I read and watch youtube that the cost of the ambulance is horrendous to US citizens. But in Malaysia we have 2 types of ambulances. One is the governmental which is usually free but can be hard to get. The other is the private one. It can be vary (I may make a mistake with this) from around USD50 (I think). So, next time don't worry to use our ambulance if you are really in emergency.
For the charges that you had, it is not that expernsive for expat/tourist. It would be even cheaper to those with insurance (esp local insurance) because we have what insurance/MOH called 13th schedule of fees, whereby, the charges for consultation, radiologist and so on (except pharmacy) are controlled. Don't worry and wish speedy recovery
Ugh! So sorry to hear that. What a pain but what amazing medical care, too! Meanwhile our co-pays in the US would be higher than that. Our daughter smooshed her finger rather badly in a folding scooter a couple of years ago. One X-ray, some instructions on how to keep the pressure from building under her nail (basically soak it twice a day) and a splint later - $1200. 😵💫🤦♀️. Your price sounds a lot better! 😂
Glad you got good care. FWIW, the cost of care in the US is out of control, wife's broken leg a few years back, requiring 2 surgeries, ended up being over $400K, thankfully, we had insurance, but the out of pocket cost was crazy.
Great service Amy, sorry about your foot though! ... we had similar fab and (cheap $800 USD) service for an emergency root canal and crown tooth in Ecuador. Would have cost in excess of $3000 in NZD which we would have had to pay for but having in Ecuador covered by travel insurance. Note to self if you're going to get sick or have an accident have it somewhere with great and cheap healthcare!
Hope u get well soon. Prince court is one of the higher end aka more expensive hospitals in Malaysia, so it’s like a hotel cum hospital. Service has to be great. Medical costs here is low compared to the US. Truth be told I don’t think many places are as expensive as in the US.
I assume that's USD450 ? That's expensive(RM1,800+) compared to other private hospitals in Malaysia. But like what you said, its a high end private hospital .
Good question. We have international health insurance with a $5,000 per person annual deductible. Outside the US, it’s cut in half, so $2,500. We’ll likely submit it in case there are any other claims in 2023.

I broke my collar bone once, er did nothing except xray and put a sling to my arm. The bone connect and heal itself.

Wow! For that kind of money, one can buy a luxury condo in KL or a bungalow outside of the Klang Valley (Greater KL).

Hope u get well soon. Prince court is one of the higher end aka more expensive hospitals in Malaysia, so it’s like a hotel cum hospital. Service has to be great. Medical costs here is low compared to the US. Truth be told I don’t think many places are as expensive as in the US.
