Illustrator should have more shapes like Affinity Designer has.
In Affinity you don't need to create a shape from 2 shapes combining them.
It has already shapes like donut and many other ready to be drawn and easily customized with points, nodes.
This tutorial is more complicated than it should be. You can just make a circle and then put a thick stroke on it.
