  • In this episode I demonstrate why I believe "less is better" when it comes to color saturation concerning HO Scale backdrop photos. The layout is eight feet long by sixteen inches wide (deep). It also has an additional two foot (section) staging on the left side for a "fiddle" yard. Technically it is ten feet by sixteen inches wide @ 55" from the floor (track level). The florescent lighting is 12" above track level. The view aperture opening (between the facia/track level and the valance/ just below the lights) is 9" opening. The "shadow" box height in total (from bottom of facia to top of valance) is 18."

    You do such a wonderful job sharing your knowledge in a short amount of time. Its simple and straight to the point. It blows my mind how you convey your thought process and techniques so they're so easily understandable and so easily learned. I find myself going "wow that is so helpful" after watching your videos. Thank you for sharing. Stay well. -Wil 👍

    Boomer, you're my favourite teacher. Especially when it comes to interpreting light in model form. I'm way over three years old, but I still ask myself "why" a lot. You do the same and also you come up with (the) answers. Thank you for another lesson.

    It’s similar to the idea that we can’t model weight to scale. The same idea applies to color and shading. This is another nine minute class on how to build a model. Less is more! Brilliant!

    I never was big into photo backdrops till my current layout. I sware by them now, and I agree, proper colour saturation is the key where your foreground modeling transitions seamlessly to the backdrop. You want a good illusion of depth of space. Tricking the eye.

      They take some thought process for sure in order to create the illusion.

    Having to be able to drive by this real life scene daily then watching it come to life on your railroad is a true inspiration. To untrained eyes like. mine the differences in the 3 backdrops is amazing,

      I almost forced my hand with the heavy saturated photo. I knew something wasn't right. Then my intuitive wife came along and said, "
      It does not work." She was right. Criticism sucks, but it makes us all better, (at what we do), at the end of the day. Cheers and thank you for the compliment as well - Boomer.

    Excellent again. I made the mistake of sending my wife out to get me a gallon of Sky blue. Everybody has their own idea of what that is. What my wife and the clerk picked out was nothing like I was thinking. But artists like ourselves think even differently. I think what I picked out is even paler. I totally agree with you on backdrop photos. I painted oils and watercolor landscapes for quite a few years and will be working some of that into my backdrop. If I can remember how 😁. Thanks again for your time on this.

      If I could I would do this over again though. I couldn't get low enough and centered on the road. Therefore, it skews a bit when you move around. Cheers.

    I had to come back to this old video because it stuck in my head and I wanted the thank you for enlightening me on now important the backdrop color is for all the rest of the color choices. I'm not started on my basement railroad yet, but benchwork is currently on my mind and that means a backdrop to instantiate the scene. Your advice is always so valuable. Thanks.

    Great job! I agree "less is best" with regard to the saturation of the backdrop. As you pointed out, it's not the focus of the diorama. Looking forward to seeing the end result of merging the backdrop with the existing blue of the diorama.
    BTW Glad to hear you're not in the doghouse. Lol.

    You are doing a great job with your videos. I have a small 1' X 6' shelf layout. I will eventually do it over. Your 16" X 8' would be doable for the room I have. Keep up the good work I am learning a lot.

    I agree the saturated image was not the right thing. When you pulled out the BW photo my ears went up. I've done a fair number of image manipulation of BW scans by applying over layers of color over parts of the image where I think it would be suitable. I'm sure you've seen examples of such "improvements". So, I was wondering how judicious use of color on the BW would work out; keep the overall muting but add spots of color to keep the eye guessing. Just a thought.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 года назад

      I think "muting" as you describe is a good thing in miniature. The smaller the scale the more muted from the real world in my opinion. Cheers.
