The bottom of the radiator tank is plastic. Up to this point I have not noticed any scratches from doing the work this way. That doesn't mean you don't have a point about taking more care. Thanks for your input.
As an aspiring independent mechanic, this was good. I've done several radiators yet still watched this and gained entertainment value. With some of your simpler jobs that come to you (brake jobs, oil/filter. coolant flush, plugs/wires) this type of fixed camera repair with commentary would suffice for me.
Eric. I really liked the way you did this vid. FYI, you have given me the confidence to take over the maintenance and repairs on my own truck...and it's been paying off. Thank you.
As always I liked the video. I prefer the detailed style. I have found watching what tools you use and how you use them very helpful as a.DIYer. I often buy another tool after watching!
I am truly amazed that this car is all OEM and in great condition. Here in California these gsr cars get stolen super quick and if you do find them they are usually modified.
Very Funny Eric. Today I'm replacing my radiator on my 2000 Honda Accord. Top tank cracked. Had a job interview and ran AC to keep from sweating to death. Radiator paid the price. Never had seen a tank seal leak before it's always been cracks in the tanks.
She got this thing hot enough to pull over, which makes me worry about the Head Gasket... Good on her for keeping an eye on the lights and gauges! Not many people do that anymore....
I like your post colonel, for that reason I always used a versatile tool other than it`s outright name (cotter pin puller) near high 90%+ I had the ease of access of this dull pointed 90% bent at end with about 1- 1/2 inch bend to point and simply slid it in with ease at top slide half the dia.of outlet slid to bottom on other side. No bend just a pull straight out try first or one up to down motion at outlet . But Eric seemed to know all history of this auto for age of hoses.BIG JOHN Likes ETCG
I sealed mine with dynagrip plastic tank repair with the assumption of replacing it when I could aford one, It has worked thus far for 5 months and no leaking. My point though is it was a job to keep it going till I could geta new one, My local mechanic (fantastic mechanic) was in amazement at how tight the seal was. Give it a go its good stuff but its half measure. Eric you should try it ina vid its good for repairing fuel tanks and such as well hardens to like concrete so its at least tougher than the plastic radiator! lol But as a philosophy I dont like putting a bandaid over a knife wound but I was tight for cash in the middle of nowhere and bam.
last time i remember you doing this style of video is when you were feeling sick and doing the Honda Civic Engine Replacement series at your old shop. Wow, that was a while ago!
Hey Erik, the reason why Showa were used in SOME Hondas are the same reason as some Hondas had a different starter and alternator, it was because of availability, in Japan from about 93 to 98 ish their normal electrics and parts makers ran into some troubles and couldnt keep up with the demand for the car output, so they went to some other manufacturers to get parts, the starters had slightly differant electrical connectors, the starters were exactly the same as the "normal" starters
Really like this way, I watch both you and scotty kilmer, But I prefer watching even changing oil on 3 diffrent brands, And the whole "as we did it" insted of showing just the "hard" or "important" things :) Thanks for all the things you have learned me! :)
I like this idea for doing videos you have done before. The voice over is effective. It kind of gives another angle and you can comment on what happened or what went wrong when you do something. Like your "Coolant gets acidic." That's great commentary that I don't think would have happened in a regular video because you're just not thinking about it at the time.
I was about to say the same thing. I've never had a JDM car before, but if I had THAT car, I would make it a POINT to make it look like everyone wished they wanted it.
My 1997 Honda Integra/Acura plastic top radiator tank developed a hairline split on a cold night and it was only 4 years old or so, it was a Denso unit. The replacement tank was steel.
I can tell you it's the salt to melt the ice and provide grip on high traffic roads. Combine that with reduced cleaning because of the cold, you get salt induced rust.
Those hose clamps are called 'Mobea' clamps... if your going to get the cable type tool for them, avoid Searz. The cable assy of all of such pliers is delicate & short lived... and even though Searz sells the pliers under the Crapsman name, they rarely if ever have replacement cables in stock or available. (at least in my experience.) With any make, don't kink/bend the cable storing them, or gaining access to clamps. Also, keep the cable as straight as possible in actual use.
I think it would be interesting to see you use a gopro camera mounted on your head while you work so we can get a 1st person view and then have you voice over. But I do like the two camera set up you have going on.
Eric, you still have it, we know you slow the process down for us and its appreciated :-) But to make it so much easyer for you, making more of your vids this way would be a great idea :-)) Even without your commentry, its still a hell of a help for anyone not sure how to do it. Stay dirty :-)
On the subject of twisted hoses: I used to work in a factory and one of the things that the QA guys would tell us over and over again is that installing a hose twisted will reduce its lifespan by 90%. So yeah, don't do that unless you like replacing hoses.
You did it again Eric, that was awesome video. Im looking forward for that white honda new engine replacement video which one you made that 2 times, I think times up for that Honda again :D
Hey Eric you should show us how you replaced the timing belt on this acura gsr. I want to be a tech. And timing belts with two cams seems like it can be difficult. I've never done one myself but I would love to see its done. Thanks :)
I changed my 1998 Civic's radiator a few months ago. it's pretty easy to do logically, but it's kind of annoying to do in terms of the time & energy. Though I suppose being up for 24 hours straight & doing the installation in 95F heat doesn't help much...
another good video/wish I had known about these before mu integra radiator failed at around 15 years old. Cost me around $35O. Now I realize I could have done it for around $1OO, about what the NEW radiator and coolant cost.
You know, as far as "shaking things up a bit" is concerned, I like this type of format occasionally. Variety is the spice of life, yes? :-) Still like your normal format also, of course, but having this type of fixed-camera-with-voice-over thing occasionally is definitely enjoyable.
I think he already has a donate button. It's been explained though that he doesn't want to get a lift, because he wants the videos to represent the repairs most of us do at home, without lifts.
Nice video. Of course I like the many angles of each move you make. But I see why and agree to you making it this way on this one. And I can only imagine how much extra time it takes to do the stuff you do with camera angles. Stay dirty haha
Hi Eric! Coming from an Australian perspective - why is there so much surface rust on the cars? Do they put salt down on the roads for ice or is it just your rain/conditions? We don't get anything like this here at home! Keep up the great stuff mate :)
Man U r really cool and prove to be a true motor engineer.. I got a query, I own nissan sunny probably called nissan versa in US, thing is the shock absorbers r more hard over damaged roads and do u got any remedy fr this!
I did a radiator on my 1998 Accord got it from Auto Zone there radiators are universal you just slide the clips in the way you need for the fans on your car.
the difference on those radiators is about a quarter inch on the fan mount. knowing which one you need is as easy as a look at the vin. first digit 1,4or 5 is american manufacture and denso rad. a j is japanese builr and valeo rad.
I like this style of shooting videos on topics you've already covered. But I think it would be better if you thought out loud while you are working, instead of adding the voice over latter.
Great idea. Whever I fix something using an online video guide I often wonder why the hell it takes so long. I figure that 1) Im not a professional mechanic and 2) videos are heavily edited. Real time is great for a change! Wonder if you could do a real-time engine rebuild.....? ;o)
Yea pulled out the radiator just to find out that I ordered the wrong one. I ordered a Denso radiator but my fan brackets didn't fit smh. Now I have to order and find out which brand fits.
Hey Eric, would you recommend genuine Honda Type 2 coolant? I noticed you installed some generic green coolant. Also, what about removing the frost plug and draining the block? The manual for my 91 CRX Si includes the block drain.
Why do older honda engines like this one have the transmission on the passenger side and the accesory belt on the driver's side? I always wondered why did Honda made those engines with that setup, while everyone else seems to do the opposite.
My 2000 Integra GS makes a constant grinding/rattling noise at idle. The noise goes away once I hit 10 mph. It has 90k miles on it. Its an automatic. Any ideas on what I should check first?
I didn't mind the vid this way you can see what you doing very well. also this sorta reminds me of The Red Green Show when Red does the video with Bill. ^^
Eric, I've got an 02 Tahoe 5.3 LS that I've had for a few months and the service engine light was on so I finally got around to checking it out. It turned out to be P0327 and P0332 witch is Knock Sensor 1,2 Circuit Low Input. Is it necessary to fix this issue and if so how much (around) would it cost me at a shop? I think its the sensor as engine sounds fine and runs fine. Not something I can do since it has to do with taking off the manifold. Thanks Mike
Personally I find it easier to disconnect the lower radiator hose at the thermostat housing, and remove it with the radiator. Then mark it, swap it over and tighten the lower clamp because I know it's in the correct position. Also, I've often come across leaking radiators on Hondas and in many cases I have found that the radiator cap was bad, which I believe resulted in the radiator bursting due to excess pressure. Not trying to sound like a smartass, just sharing my experience...
I agree but unless it's imperative to have an after edit remark then i just want to see what he sees and hear what he hears. Imagine even having a live stream...!
I think we should all pitch in to buy you a lift man! seriously! if you can get a donate button I'm sure your fellow mechanics will gladly put money toward one for you. It will help your shop, and give us viewers another angle for your videos. what do you guys think?

I have 2 on ETCG1. One on production and one on post production. Those videos are also located on the 'About' page of my website.
Eric. I really liked the way you did this vid. FYI, you have given me the confidence to take over the maintenance and repairs on my own truck...and it's been paying off. Thank you.

I've done two radiators this year. Videos like this saved me a lot of money! Thanks Eric!

The book time for the radiator on a 2001 Integra GS-R is 1.6 hours, and you did it in about 20 minutes. Nice! Love being efficient on the job, too.
last time i remember you doing this style of video is when you were feeling sick and doing the Honda Civic Engine Replacement series at your old shop. Wow, that was a while ago!

Good video. I have a 94 gsr that is on its 3rd radiator but the car has 310,000 miles on it. My father and I love your work.
Great video, would love to see more of these real-time jobs.. its nice to see you work like a real tech without being handicapped by the camera
Really like this way, I watch both you and scotty kilmer, But I prefer watching even changing oil on 3 diffrent brands, And the whole "as we did it" insted of showing just the "hard" or "important" things :) Thanks for all the things you have learned me! :)
See the video I did on engine overheating for details on that one.
Integras are very rare here in Italy... I love 'em
The radiator I put in my 1500 came with provisions for an automatic trans, and I ran my power steering fluid through it.

Awesome work Eric, wish I could mount cameras like that when I take my car to a shop to see what they do.
There's a post on my forum about that very thing under "Why EricTheCarGuy doesn't have a Lift".
good video and good job adding the commentary, it helps a lot!
Well done. I have to wonder though if maybe the head gasket isn't popped now, as Honda heads aren't very tolerant of major overheating like that.
My 1997 Honda Integra/Acura plastic top radiator tank developed a hairline split on a cold night and it was only 4 years old or so, it was a Denso unit. The replacement tank was steel.
Thanks Eric. Just found out I have the same problem. I have 99 Gsr and it still runs like a champ.
Radiator replacements are my favorite thing to do on automobiles.
See this weeks Google plus hang out video. I answer that question on the show.
Hey just want to say thanks for the videos! This is an efficient way of doing this job, especially when your flat rate.
I can tell you it's the salt to melt the ice and provide grip on high traffic roads. Combine that with reduced cleaning because of the cold, you get salt induced rust.
I like this format, you've done it before with the civic engine replacement so I don't mind it.
Hi Eric, Last time you recommend to replace hose clamp with screw clamp. thanks for the video :)
Nice format Eric. I wouldn't mind seeing other videos like this one. Keep up the good work & stay dirty.

Did you watch the whole video?
Hey Eric you should show us how you replaced the timing belt on this acura gsr. I want to be a tech. And timing belts with two cams seems like it can be difficult. I've never done one myself but I would love to see its done. Thanks :)

Good job bro. Gives us real mechanics a view of how u get down and dirty.
I don't mind this style of video as long as it has a voice-over commentary, though I do miss the close-up shots.
another good video/wish I had known about these before mu integra radiator failed
at around 15 years old. Cost me around $35O.
Now I realize I could have done it for around $1OO, about what the NEW radiator and coolant cost.
Click the lil cog gear and you will see the options to expand the player.
I get first dibs when she sells it. :)
So this now IS the GSR, eh? =D
I still can’t wait to see both your GSR and Type-R together in a cruise video or something similar :-)
I know I've posted this before on other videos, but... You need a lift!!!!! We should take up a "Get Eric The Car Guy a lift" collection.
You know, as far as "shaking things up a bit" is concerned, I like this type of format occasionally. Variety is the spice of life, yes? :-) Still like your normal format also, of course, but having this type of fixed-camera-with-voice-over thing occasionally is definitely enjoyable.
most states use salt during winter when it snows mainly to prevent ice buildup

Eric the Car Guy: The Directors Cut. Still better than Highlander 2 Directors Cut. Hehe
BTW Eric you should do a video about the equipment you use to record yourself. What cameras, what editing software, tripod, etc.?
Man U r really cool and prove to be a true motor engineer.. I got a query, I own nissan sunny probably called nissan versa in US, thing is the shock absorbers r more hard over damaged roads and do u got any remedy fr this!

What is your favorite car to work on? As in the one with the least hassle looking at repairing cars..
Great idea. Whever I fix something using an online video guide I often wonder why the hell it takes so long. I figure that 1) Im not a professional mechanic and 2) videos are heavily edited. Real time is great for a change! Wonder if you could do a real-time engine rebuild.....? ;o)
Hi Eric,Did you post the timing belt video that you mentioned that you did on this vehicle?
eric when you planning on getting a "VAG" diesel like a nice mk4 golf!!!???
You work very expeditiously Eric. :)
I really liked this a lot!
Yea pulled out the radiator just to find out that I ordered the wrong one. I ordered a Denso radiator but my fan brackets didn't fit smh. Now I have to order and find out which brand fits.

piece of cake now on to the next
I hope the driver realizes what car they car got. Beautiful
He does,go onto his ETCG1 Channel and look.
Erick, can you upload a video, to replace a throttle body of 95 honda civic, thankx
why has youtube got rid of the bigger player option they have to change things when its not needed
I like this format
"entropy is everywhere" -- ha ha, wise words.
Why do older honda engines like this one have the transmission on the passenger side and the accesory belt on the driver's side? I always wondered why did Honda made those engines with that setup, while everyone else seems to do the opposite.
is this the same GSR you end up buying?
Do you typically work in dead silence everyday (minus when you are recording videos)? That would drive me mad.
My 2000 Integra GS makes a constant grinding/rattling noise at idle. The noise goes away once I hit 10 mph. It has 90k miles on it. Its an automatic. Any ideas on what I should check first?

Did the engine survive without water?
B18C5 to be exact being that it is USDM.
So which radiator is good or better showa or Denso?

Imagine even having a live stream...!
Do you guys have any say in what would be a good first car?
Up at the top of the RPM the GSR definitely has some power ;-)
does it come stock with a strut bar
Hey Eric can you do a video how to replace that Radiator for the MDX 2004 please
And even a girl drives or not it seem awesome and this is a good video for repair
Also since i seen the answer did u move or stay?
Astro Pneumatic Hose Clamp Pliers
I like mine a lot...
I wonder if he ever found the rad cap
How did you remove the air pockets having and issues with idle after changing out the coolant.
Damn leaky radiators are bad on any car. Hope the headgasket is ok!
I think we should all pitch in to buy you a lift man! seriously! if you can get a donate button I'm sure your fellow mechanics will gladly put money toward one for you. It will help your shop, and give us viewers another angle for your videos. what do you guys think?
