  • We recently had an opportunity to take a walk in nature with our friend Shana Lipner Grover of Sage Country Herbs, where we had a conversation about St. John’s wort. This amazing, weedy herbal ally loves disturbed soil-so we often see it here in Western Oregon in areas that have been logged, with washes of beautiful yellow flowers shining along hillsides. Although St. John’s wort has been lauded for its uplifting nature in aiding with sadness, that is not its original claim to fame. It is a calming herb with a direct relationship to the nervous system and also helps our bodies to do the hard work of cellular regeneration, so is often used in blends to address discomfort from dental issues, mild cuts and scrapes, and sensitive nerves. It’s also a good ally to have around when we struggle with the winter month blues because those sunny yellow flowers carry the energetics of uplifting summer days. Listen in to learn more about this vibrant, supportive botanical!

Plants show up right when they’re needed. My buddy Cleavers showed up right outside our door the day I came back from the doctor who just told me I had Sarcoidosis. Within days I was breathing clearly again.

I suffered with piriformis syndrome (nerve pain in the hip from the piriformis muscle being impinged) for 5 years. I tried so many medical treatments (massage, physical therapy, etc.) as I could not stand for more than a couple of minutes because the pain was so severe. None of the treatments were effective. I decided to try St John's Wort/Arnica oil and the pain subsided almost immediately. I am forever grateful.

i had that! It was awful. The doctor said I might have to live with it the rest of my life! I would have tried St. John's Wort if I would have known about it. I went to Thailand (A trip planned with my sister for a long time) I was worried about sitting on the plane for such a long time. Thailand has wonderful massages and they are cheap. It happened to be serendipity that I ran into a massage lady who spoke good English and knew exactly how to help me. I have not have any problems since and that has been 6 years.

@@sylviajohnson373 I purchased St John's Wort/Arnica oil from Mountain Rose Herbs. In desperation, not even knowing what its benefits were) I just rubbed it on the hip area straight from the bottle, which is very safe. My family and I could not believe that we had finally found the remedy to stop the pain. It has never returned.

I love the way you teach. You also have an uplifting quality about you. I've watched this video twice and will probably watch it again, as each time I do, I remember more of what you've presented. Eventually putting the whole of your information together to get a well rounded education of the benefits of this herb. I live in the north east and have a beautiful bush in bloom right now. The flowers are slightly different with a fuzzy puff of yellow above the petals. The bees love it and I pick and dry the flowers for tea. Years ago I purchased it as a salve/gel for nerve pain, but had forgotten that was one of it's benefits. Thank you for re-introducing me to an old beloved native medicinal plant.

Your message is so timely. I've been harvesting St. John's wort locally here in the Inland Northwest (Northern Idaho). When I lived in Utah it was a component of my cultivated garden and not a native. I used it as a tincture for elevation of mood and emotions and discovered its topical applications as pain reliever, wound healer...especially in combination with arnica wherein both worked synergistically for topical and deep tissue healing. It seems that when we attune with our herbal allies they may sometimes "suggest" diverse ways in which we may partner with them to the benefit of our own healing. Weeds are only plants that we deem as "strangers". There is a pharmacopeia "beneath our feet"...or at least to be found trailside and in our gardens.

Thank you so much. I have been taking st johns wort on & off since high school. I have always preferred natural medicine to taking prescription meds, as they tend to have so many unwanted side effects. I have always wanted to learn more about it as anytime i bring it up to my dr, they go well i would advise against taking it for x, y, z. Its like well its working for than just my mood. But they don't seem to care.

Hi there! Here is some info on growing St. John's wort from our friends at Strictly Medicinal Seeds: Plant prefers dry to mesic, poor or quickly draining soils, full sun. Light dependent germinator. Sow in spring. Use very sandy soil mix, press seed firmly into surface and keep evenly moist and in the light until germ, which takes about 5 days. Transplant or thin to 3 to 4 feet apart.

I have tried it internally in form of tincture but it made me feel awful, tried several times and decided it is too much of a risk. I am not on any prescription medications, but it interacts with everything for reasons that you gave. It is a serotonin re uptake inhibitor which can lead to excess serotonin in bloodstream, this can lead to serotonin syndrome, a very serious condition. If taken with any SSRIs or MAOIs the interaction can be fatal. Therapeutic dose should be reached within two weeks, suddenly stopping leads to withdrawal symptoms. It interacts with many enzymes, not just the one you mentioned. This medicine should only be taken under the care of a knowledgeable clinician due to its high potential for dangerous interactions within our bodies. BUT, it works great topically for nerve and muscle pain, and that's how I use it, often interchangeable with comfrey.
