  • We’ve been loving our recent plant walks with Shana Lipner Grover of Sage Country Herbs. We were lucky that she spent some time with one of our favorite herbs: mallow (Althaea officinalis).
Like other members of the Malvaceae family, mallow is a demulcent that is rich in mucilage, so it’s both hydrating and soothing. Our mucosal membranes must be moist to be healthy. A tea made from mallow is not only good for a dry, irritated throat, it also encourages and triggers the secretion of important mucus in the rest of the body at the same time: so as the mallow tea soothes your throat, it also triggers similar action in the sinuses, eyes, digestive tract, bladder, and more! And, because that essential mucus carries immune antibodies, it helps bring those antibodies where they’re needed. Gentle, tasty mallow is a phenomenally effective herbal ally. Listen in to learn more about mallow and other Malvaceae family demulcents!

Thank you for this lovely and informative video on the Mallow. I suffer from chronic dry-mouth, coughing and congestion due to sinus issues, so I’m definitely going to give this a try. I’m in absolute awe of Mother Nature and all the beautiful, amazingly medicinal plants, flowers, herbs etc that she gifts us with…
I’m from Maui, Hawai’i and that’s where I first began my journey into learning herbalism, aromatherapy and the like. We actually have an endangered flowering shrub called Abutilon Menziesii, known as Koʻoloaʻula in Hawaiian. It’s a part of the “mallow family” (Malvaceae). Our hale (house) is in a very dry part of the island, which is where it grows. It’s so beautiful and I wonder if it has medicinal properties as well. I’ve never been able find any accurate info on it.
Sidenote: I’m not sure if you’ve heard about the catastrophic damage to the island of Maui - due to the blazing wildfires in the past 24hrs… dozens of lives lost, homes and businesses destroyed… as well as the sacred land itself. It’s utterly heartbreaking.
Anyhow, I don’t mean to add something sad to this very beautifully informative and inspiring video. It’s just that hearing about Mallow immediately made me think of the delicate Koʻoloaʻula flowers.
Much mahalos (Hawaiian for thanks + gratitude) for sharing your wisdom, experience and time today. Oh and a bit of synchronicity too, as my daughter’s name is Sage. 🙏🏽

Thank you so much for your kind comment! Mallow really is a special genus of medicinal plants. Our hearts are breaking for Maui. I'm glad this video could remind you of your home in this time of grief. I looked up Abutilon Menziesii. It really is a beautiful plant! I can see why you would be so attached to it. Thank you so much for your comment, Asha! - Gracie

I just came down with a dry sore throat, haven't been sick in 2 years. And this plant just showed up in my yard. I've never seen it before. In fact I'm here because I was trying to identify it. Amazing.

Thank you for a very informative video. I can't believe how gorgeous those flowers are and medicinal? What more could you want in a perfect garden than plants that are showstoppers and can help in healing. This year I have been working with Yarrow and Borage. Will definitely need to grow Mallow - we have harvesting time coming up soon and talk about dry sore throats!

I have several hibiscus. I have heard that not all of the flowers can be used for tea. I'm trying to find out which type can be used for tea. If anyone can advise.

Hello! This variety of hibiscus that we offer and use in our own tea blends is Hibiscus sabdariffa. I hope that helps! 🌺

The mallow I have is Malva neglecta. Can they be used interchangeably? Thank you 🙏🏻

Hi Kristy! While all plants in the mallow family are edible (except for the cotton plant), I am not positive if all mallows can be used in exactly the same way. I would suggest doing a little research on Malva neglecta and either reaching out to a qualified herbalist or botanist or even your local Extension Office! I hope that helps to get your started! ~Gracie

Marshmallow is a type of mallow! Marshmallow is the variety of mallow that grows wild in marshes. There are many types of mallow that are all similar. I hope that helps! - Gracie

What a gorgeous mallow. It looks more like malva sylvestris. Is it really althaea officinalis? I haven't seen althaea with the same incredible degree of two colors present. Stunning!

Loved how you stated that it looked like an artist had painted the flowers.
That is one of the many reasons I love what God has done in nature. He made many beautiful things in this world. Along with so many to take care of our bodies.

So the tea is made with the whole plant?

    • @alicerice3271
      @alicerice3271 Год назад

Typically the tea is made with the root but there is mucilage in all parts of the plant. Usually a long steep time or a decoction method is necessary for the root since it's very dense.

Hello Gracie - Thank you for this Mallo tutorial. I am new to Marshmallow and have started enjoying Marshmallow tea.
I just ordered Marshmallow seeds from Mountain Rose. I have a woodland garden and have decided to plant herbs VS vegetables. I want these wonderful friends to come back every year for their beauty and healing properties.~ Diane

I'm so drawn to this plant. I'm sitting here with my extremely dry eyes that an optometrist prescribed the strongest possible hydrating eyedrops for because they are so bad that sometimes I can't hardly see, and hearing you talk about the moistening benefits of this herb. It's interesting how we stumble across the plants we need, when we need them most. I'm a natural soap & skincare maker with a botanist's heart, I just love plants. A few days ago, before I saw this video, I made my marshmallow rose body cream using marshmallow extract as one of my main actives along with colloidal oatmeal, & rose hydrosol because it's all so soothing, calming and hydrating. So, I've already been working with this plant but was unaware of all its other benefits. Thank you so much for teaching us all about it & how it can also help the body internally and otherwise. 🌺
