    Miss McCormick is great!
    First Florence says "it's not all your fault, we encouraged you" and then contradicting herself says, "Marcia, you brought this on yourself!"!

      Julie Simpler As someone said down below that the family encouraged Marcia to take the role of Juliet and to be confident, they didn't encourage her to act like she's "junior high's answer to Sarah Barnhart" which is exactly what she did.

      Yes.. this is not a contradiction!? I’m trying to understand why so many people here are having a hard time with this. It wasn’t all her fault in the sense that the family encouraged her to be her best.. but Marcia let it go to her head and got an ego trip (thinking she was better than everyone else). That was not the family’s intention, that was Marcia’s doing. That’s how she brought the consequences “all on herself.” Simple. This is not rocket science folks. 🙄

    I like how people are trying to say Mrs. Brady contradicted herself. Yes, it might have come off that way, but think about it. At first, Marcia didn't feel confident playing such a big part. Her family encouraged her, which is what family and friends is supposed to do. But acting like a snobby diva is a choice and she was old enough to know better. And she was let known how her actions were affecting others. She didn't listen.

    It didn't seem fair to Marcia that she was dropped from the play without at least a warning...something to the extent of "if you don't start treating people better you're going to be replaced". It's like everyone acted like it wasn't a problem and then suddenly Carol comes to her and tells her she's out. That's pretty rough.

    • @Rena66
      @Rena66 2 года назад +4

      That's because they (the family and Ms. Goodwin) had already given her plenty of chances and it was very close to the play being performed, so they had to quickly put her understudy in instead. More than anything, it was a lesson for Marcia's divaness in that episode. If they hadn't done this, she probably wouldn't have learned the lesson. Sometimes you need a tough lesson to wake up and she did....she ate a huge piece of humble pie, which is exactly what she needed. In the end, it worked out because Marcia ended up playing Lady Capulet when they found out that the actress came down with the mumps. So it was a smaller role, of course, but it was the tough lesson Marcia needed to get her act together.

      I read somewhere that crying scenes came easy for her. She had pent up hurt inside, so she used her crying scenes as an opportunity to get her feelings out.

  • @indigothecat

    This was a stab in the back, nobody in authority ever confronted her with, "Shape up, or we give the part to Tina."

    • @indigothecat
      @indigothecat 3 года назад +1

      @Briguy52748 It's also strongly implied that her family purposefully fed her ego so she'd try out. Carol even says so in the little scolding she gave her. She never saw the punishment coming, so she never thought there was anything wrong, which led them to the drastic action. Not saying Marcia was doing anything right, she was clearly misbehaving, but the authority figures could have stepped in and nipped it in the bud earlier, or just given the warning here and waited to see what Marcia would do.

    • @indigothecat
      @indigothecat 3 года назад +1

      @Briguy52748 They never disciplined her during the buildup phase though. And they also had her siblings in on it, they were instructed to over-exaggerate how awesome Marcia sounded when she spoke or read things.

      @Briguy52748 True enough, I guess I've just gotten too used to Super Nanny who always gives the formal "warning" first before discipline occurs. ;)

    And the *Emmy* for the Best Dramatic Loss of a *Tony*
    award goes to... Marcia Brady... for her wonderful traumatic reaction to being ditched in a play! LOL

    • @anthonygiordano3991
      @anthonygiordano3991 2 года назад +1

      You have to understand. The Brady Bunch storylines and episodes were primarily geared towards children. So, from a child’s point of view, losing a part in a play is a big deal. She was more dramatic in this particular scene because, she not only lost her part in the play, but was chastised by her mother as well as humiliated. All of that can be traumatic for a child and Maureen was expressing that in this scene. I think she did a great job.

    I actually know how Marcia feels with this. Back in 1998 I was supposed to perform a song in a talent show. At the very last minute my parents pulled me out of it without even talking to me. They just did it and I was absolutely devastated! It's a very tough thing to go through when you're a young teenager. In my case it didn't have to do with a diva-like attitude, but rather my parent's lack of support of my creative abilities. To this day they don't fully support my creative efforts, even after experiencing success with them.

    What's funny is condescending/arrogant people usually don't directly say they're better than others. Usually they don't consciously realize what they think. I remember the chef from my old job. My old coworker had to vent about the chef, who apparently acted like she was more experienced than the caterers during this particular service, when it was her first time. All bossy about where things should be and how done. I didn't believe that story at first because I thought the chef was ok. But then, when she gave me a firm, insensitive lecture and made me sound fooIish, and told me the next day that she was just trying to help me be successful, I believed my ex-coworker about the chef. I don't care for implications that I'm a faiIure. Turning your fauIt into something noble, and making me the big Ioser while you get to be the honorable winner trying to help me, well, that just shows she is full of herself.

    At last, a Brady Bunch episode where "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" gets her bubble busted! This must be the proudest moment in Jan's life, seeing her annoyingly perfect big sister finally get her comeuppance! It definitely taught Marcia her first painful lesson on being so arrogant. Proves that even the most top-notch parents have to keep their growing kids from making the darndest mistakes that usually end in disappointment. I love how Carol just walks out of the room, leaving Marcia to reap what she sowed after giving Marcia the bad news that she's no longer in the play. Like she meant business.
