Zach Sang was the interviewer and yeah we like him, in the absolute sea of superficial and shallow interviewers they had to deal with when they first broke onto the western scene, he was the only one treating them as artists, asking deeper questions that meant you could tell he’d actually done his research, as well as asking about their UNICEF campaign and charity work.
When Namjoon did his official solo debut, there was only ONE American interviewer he even bothered to talk to, and it was Zach Sang.

Liam McEwan was the only other worthy interviewer. I remember their interview with him for Billboards 2017, Liam asked them about their albums and even donations and even spent time off screen talking to Namjoon, bcs they bonded talking about New Zealand.

That blackpink interview was genuinely so painful. I think the interviewer (Zach sang) went into it thinking they’d have something meaningful to say because before that, the only kpop group he’d interviewed before was BTS. He’s also the same interviewer that got mad when he was interrupted by his production staff 🤣 idk about others, but I’ve always liked him because he has always asked BTS really engaging questions. BTS also keep going back to him, so I’m gonna assume they like him too. If BTS doesn’t like an interviewer, they don’t hesitate to ghost them.

    • @roguechevelle
      @roguechevelle 26 дней назад +9

Yeah Zach had talked in depth with BTS and they were so excited to speak about their songs, messages, and themes. He was a breathe of fresh air in America because they did a crap ton of interviews and almost nobody did any research or even listen to their songs. He did all those things and asked them great questions. So when Zach got the opportunity to interview BP he did the same and asked them about their music. He realized he stepped in it so to speak by asking them about it and corrected how he handled interviews with kpop groups going forward. I may have my own personal thoughts or opinions about things, even other groups but we can't deny that some companies are controlling and don't trust their artists enough to let them participate in their own music. And they certainly don't cultivate an environment for their idols to grow musically as artists, heck after learning more about MHJ as a former SM creative director and seeing how she talks about idols we can see the mindset of a lot of these executives at kpop companies especially the Big 3. They see idols as a dime a dozen, replaceable, and don't even view them as artists.

Zach Sang was such a breath of fresh air when he first met with them. The guys, esp Joon having to be the one to handle the SAME EXACT QUESTIONS EVERY SINGLE TIME for days and it became exhausting and disappointing. One, associated with one of the biggest top 40 stations asked do they just sing or do they also dance.. People here in the US seemed only to want to see them as a curiosity rather than legit musicians and performers. 23:38 But when Zach piped up asking questions about the music concepts and background theme, I swear Joon brightened up, huge smile before our eyes, and excitedly had an excellent discussion about it

I think the KPop concept definition often causes a lot of unnecessary drama, because when fans simplify what a group is doing and is worth down to a superficial aesthetic, it becomes so easy for the fans to become EXTREMELY threatened by groups doing an even slightly similar aesthetic i.e the New Jeans and Illit Drama
But BTS having a true concept, lets them switch between aesthetics more freely. They don’t have to stick to one kind of outfit or vibe for a stage in order to make the song and what they’re trying to communicate visible. Like when they did Dionysus, something they usually flavour with Greek mythology inspired visuals, but swapped it to Kingsman for a single performance and it STILL WORKED. And another groups fans got mad at them for “stealing their concept” when like, girl, by that logic your group also stole it- from the original movie.
Like think about how much of a SWITCH UP it was when they performed Gogo in their outfits from Fake Love, it still WORKED and if anything it increased the hidden eeriness from the goofy fun song that was secretly about how the younger generation is screwed financially.

That is incredibly rare and one of a kind, especially for a rapper/artist in a K-pop space. I personally listen to quite a bit of fun meaningless k-pop, for example it makes for good background music that's easy to vibe along with when I write, a big hobby of mine. But I've long ago stopped trying to get invested in particular groups and instead just pick and choose the songs I like the sound of and call it a day. There are some that I like more than others, but I don't "stan" them or follow what they're up to, it's more like "oh, Twice released a new song, I might have a listen later" and if I like it that's cool, if not I forget it pretty quickly.
Though there are groups that write their own songs, that I usually enjoy listening to like Txt or (G)idle, there have not been any that I've connected with the same way as BTS. Their lyrics just speak to me differently from any other group.
As for being a fan of other k-pop groups, I find that it's very dependent on your personal music taste. A lot of groups have a specific sound or style that becomes their specialty, and if I like that one style then I might become a fan. My best examples (and my personal favourite groups only after BTS) are Seventeen (a group under Hybe) or Gfriend (ex-Hybe group, disbanded in 2021 sadly), they both have very specific styles that can be found through their whole discography, and they both have sounds that I personally love, so I can confidently say that I'm a fan of them. But this love for them is purely from the way their music sounds and how good their performances are, their lyrics are less important to me. Because of this I still can't say I love them nearly as much as I do BTS, because I have not connected with their music the same way.
But that does not mean I don't listen to their music almost every day, I'll happily sing along to their songs, I often have videos of their performances playing on my second monitor while playing casual games, I really do love them, and I think a lot of k-pop fans need to realize that it's okay to like artists for different things. In my opinion none of the k-pop groups that are popular today can compete with BTS's lyrics or message, but that's okay. They all have their own strengths and sound, I just wish more groups would stop pretending like they're more than they are, but ehhh that's where I stop caring honestly, a lot of k-poppies hype these performers up as if they're the second coming of Christ and I'm not gonna be the one to change that so I'll leave them to it 💀
Anyway, fun meaningless k-pop can be a lot of fun if you find a certain sound that you can enjoy regardless of the lyrics, but if you don't enjoy the sound of a group then there's not much more to it.

    • @menohero_menovillian

I totally agree. There's absolutely NO problem liking fun meaningless songs. You like what you like. It does irk me when people compare these groups or songs to BTS's songs tho. Like come on...they're in totally different lanes. No hate to BP...but BTS is the biggest asian artist ever. That's a fact. But because they're a male group from Korea right now and BP is "the biggest girl group" in korea right now, a lot of people try to put them in the same conversation. I remember seeing a reactor saying BP was more hip hop then BTS. like wt serious f. BP doesn't even know what hip hop is *face palm*.
Lots of blinks were defending BP blaming everything on their label. Well, the majority of the members are their own bosses now, so the fans can't use that excuse anymore. Hoping the girls can show the world what they've got. As a female, i do want to see a good representation of powerful women. Hoping they can show that powerful women are intelligent and classy women and not just women that look good and pretend to be cute

You know why BTS covers never hit? It's the emotions. BTS are one of those artists who can pour their heart out in their songs and nothing will ever sound the same to you again. Other artists I'm fond of listening to for this very reason are Ed Sheeran, MJ, Beyonce and some of even Billie Eilish's songs. Taylor Swift's past songs had that heart for me but a lot of her new songs don't (imo). So i don't repeat her new albums over and over again.
For BTS, I have two absolute favourite verses in the world, which i keep relistening all the time.
One is from Yoongi's Seesaw, in the pre-chorus after the 3rd verse where he said
"If we didn't have feelings for each other
If we didn't think of each other
Would we have dragged it out like this?".
And the other one is Joon's Groin's 2nd verse "Hate is harmful but I suck it up".
These two verse are sung with soooo much emotions, such delicacy and it almost makes me tear up every single time.

I appreciate the kpop concept, because the vids are bright and flashy, the songs are catchy and mindless, and I don't need to think when I listen to them. But at the root of it, I can't stan those type of artists because I just can't muster the respect for them as artists because at the end of the day, they're not artists. They're singers. I got into Bangtan because of the message, the actual concept, the storyline. And that's why I respect them as artists, because I know there isn't a bad song in their whole discography and not many artists (worldwide) can claim that kind of artistry.

love the striking example of School to differentiate between Actual Concept vs Kpop Concept. This is why some shallow kpop fans still think bts ‘copied’ by simply wearing school uniforms (which 3737838 other groups do) when they actually wore it to support an ACTUAL concept singing about school life & education in the songs. irony of k-pop fans claiming their idols as the OG when they are the opposite of original.
tbh i wouldn’t blame the korean public as much because “concept” has become a loan english word that is referring to visual. so they actually ARE talking about aesthetic only, not the actual concept the english speaking world means. Might be a bit of language cultural difference. But for kpop world, they are too used to the visuals being front and centre so they don’t look for the deeper meaning which is why BTS broke the mould. But it’s the PROBLEMATIC kpop fans are making fan wars over this and not getting the point. 😓
sure there’s nothing wrong with wanting to consume visual aesthetics in your entertainment, but don’t confuse that with what BTS does!

That's why I love their music because obviously I love it but i see how much THEY love it and how much THEY are attached to it and thst makes it more precious for me

i love meaningless fun songs too, or fun songs with a very basic theme, but my love for those songs tend to die down as time goes by. I used to think i didn't care much about lyrics but every song i hold dear to me and have been listening to for years and years, have great lyrics and message, no matter the theme.

Aesthetics always has a place in artistic creation. I just wish they used concept as a word like Boracity does. And use aesthetics for the rest. It would clear a lot of drama.
Aesthetics can set a trend and people (kpoppies) not accuse others of copying. Which they love to do.
I work in design, you can have similar work and not copy it from another because it is a trend.

To me, Taemin and Shinee is one of the best examples of the connection/no connection. Yes, Taemin is a part of Shinee and some of their music is super fun. I like the members. I feel no real connection to their music. Now Taemin’s solo work? The concepts are very personal to him. Instant connection.

Sup tribe leader, bout to go to bed but i saw your notification so i wanted to paste my comment here as well since that tiny section annoyed me more than it should have. Bora's lit though, i just disagree with that part.
Agree with everything but like crazy. I really don't know why people get so confused or straightforward when it comes to like crazy. When people make 'theories', it's counteracted with "he's blunt" as though the theory it self doesn't show just how blunt he is. Or the party scene in the music video isn't actually what he does (as stated by him) as though it isn't obviously a personification of escapism, like duh it's in his head. I love how we talk about how open the rapline are with us through their albums, but I really hate how the vocal line's openness is downplayed, especially jimin due to face. He said the actual movie like crazy doesn't really have much influence on the song at all. He just liked those lines so he wanted to include it (probably because it does have some reference to the feelings he was feeling). Like crazy isn't about a fictional relationship, face is not a breakup album. Like crazy (and face) is about the pandemic giving him way too much time in his own head, forcing him to face the parts of himself he denies (his femininity), the parts of himself he hates, relationships that've failed him because he's a fucking clown for believing them (mostly platonic (if you connect face-off with like crazy, the romantic part is an issue of his own self-denial and fear of loss), his fear of losing fans and members (those empty concerts and the mots7 probably really hit him), basically, that ep is deep as shit. That's why I love that minimoni did the album exchange and jimin's comment that indigo was joon burying shit with rpwp being him just letting it all out. In lost, he's in the trunk of his own head and in out of love he's telling himself to get he's ass out of the fucking truck (also telling randoms to leave him), and in come back to me, he finally got his ass out of his mind (well sort of, baby steps).
Anywho yeah... face deep and personal, like crazy too.

tbh i wouldn’t blame the korean public as much because “concept” has become a loan english word that is referring to visual. so they actually *are* talking about aesthetic only, not the actual concept the english speaking world means. Might be a bit of language cultural difference. But for kpop world, they are too used to the visuals being front and centre so many problematic kpop fans aren’t conditioned to look for the deeper meaning which is why BTS broke the mould. But problematic kpop fans are making fan wars over this and not getting the point 😓 sure there’s nothing wrong with wanting to consume visual aesthetics in your entertainment, but don’t confuse that with what BTS does!

I was a fan of BP back then and when that interview came out I was so embarrassed lol
I was like damn i thought they were involved at least in something about what they do but they honestly didn't know what to say most of the time when the questions were about music and not their personal lives
Then by the pass of the time i stopped listening to them bc i started caring more about messages and art and stage presence. And yes, nowadays i still enjoy listening to some fun songs but Idk.. i just found them repetitive besides the fact they barely release songs and communicate with fans or are seem like a group
Anyways, that was jut me, that still works for others so..
Not my cup of tea anymore

I wish people would get into smaller groups or groups that aren't in the big 4 companies. all these criticisms that people have towards new kpop groups, these smaller groups have yet people refuse to check them out because they aren't popular, continuous concepts/lore, music and participating in their concepts and music. I feel like this is why bts (+groups like ateez and gidle) popularity is so important, kpop stans are so fixated on numbers

My favorites are Oh my god (clearly a lesbian Anthem), Lion, Nxde (talk about the perception of nudity in society). For a good story you have Allergy (talking about not loving themselves and the pressure of social media) and Queencard (the answer to Allergy where the girl wants to do plastic chirurgy, at the end she realizes she is a Queencard without surgery).
For more poetic/ballad vibes Hann and Hwaa are Amazing !
For hip hop go to My Bag or Uh-Oh ✨

If you do want to listen to another group who actually UNDERSTANDS concepts properly, they were actually featured in the video briefly talking about how they actually do write their own music, G-Idle is a pretty phenomenal group with probably THE BEST female rapper in Kpop. They always have something to say about their music and why they went the direction that they did, they’ve done a whole heap of different aesthetic and genres over the years, but it still feels like G-Idle.
One of their more recent works Nude, had this moulin rouge aesthetic, but was very deliberately picked not only because it matched the songs sound, but because it was a critique of the way the media and society constantly sexualise women’s bodies. While also invoking Marilyn Monroe to send the middle finger to their agency for not protecting one of their members when she was forced to leave the group due to an entirely fake bullying scandal, they even all dyed their hair blonde for an extra level of fuck you.

Also, I love Boracity but I really thought she was going to at least mention Hope World or Jack In the Box because those are GOD TIER concepts. I think Hobi is the top concept guy in BTS. All of the BTS songs he drove the concept on are among their most conceptual tracks: Whalien52, Ddaeng, Mic Drop, Dionysus, Dis-ease...like he comes up with incredible floor-to-ceiling themes. I think fully realizing a concept through every detail of his projects is his signature as an artist.

I feel meh about Zach Sang. I think he truly respects the boys and the boys have a good relationship with him. But he let this white boy band go onto his show and totally disrespect BTS ("i think there still needs to be a british or american boy band at the top," "I can't understand what they're saying--I can't get behind it.") And his producer was like "me too!" agreeing with those boys. So I'm not saying he had to start a fight with those boys but someone in the room could have pushed back a little and moved on or they could have taken the comments out of the aired portion. It just was disappointing.

this might be an uncommon request since i know armys don’t typically like these groups but i would rly recommend you check out nct or exo, they have incredible music and i think anyone who doesn’t give them a chance bc of a preconceived notion they might have about them is really missing out. if ur looking for cohesive albums with quality music they are the way to go ! this vid was more about thematic concepts than the sound of the albums but i still thought id mention them
