Was Halo Infinite's Story Really that BAD? (Halo Infinite Story Retrospective)

  • Halo Infinite is one of my favourite Halo games to date from a story perspective. The open world of Zeta Halo, to the mystery that the developers left on the ring. It grips the player and entices you into the story, making you want more. This campaign was far from perfect however, leaving more unanswered questions than many might have anticipated. However, Halo Infinite was meant to originally have campaign DLC, which of course never happened.

What did you think of Halo Infinite's Campaign?

Halo infinite story wasn't bad just Disappointing. I wasn't a fan of halo 5 story but for the whole conflict to resolved mostly off screen was still a bad choice. Just as misleading as halo 5 was. Also felt unfinished, we didn't get to see how this banished conflict started. Don't know anything about the endless or the harbinger. Spending the game with same three characters got repetitive. The Story for me is better direction than halo 5 but worse than halo 4. I do think people are overly critical of 343 games but this one when I finished left me feeling way too empty story wise. Left with more questions than anything, and unsatisfied with how they resolved halo 5 story. Leaving important story beats to audio logs you might find is always a negative in my book.
Positives did have solid dialogue and acting, the boss battles were fresh and something new, and the open world was fun.

I felt like Infinite's campaign was missing many elements. I mean in Halo: CE you often had small bits of story you'd randomly hear marines spit out. Yes, you had the tablets, but those little details like in Halo Reach and Halo CE really made the atmosphere. The final boss fight didn't feel grand either. Escherum just felt kinda too heroic for a brute. Not really Banish like Atriox. I think in terms of the new baddies Halo wars 2 did it better, but in terms of re-introducing the covenant as the Banished gameplay was a really great idea. The rated T rating I think really held back this Sci-fi game. Too me Halo always operated better as a Rated M game because of its Sci-fi Nature. Also, Marines couldn't drive vehicles and we're missing Local Co-op that was originally promised.

It wasn’t bad and I enjoyed what I played, but it felt like it ended when it really started to get going. Best way I can put it is that it felt like someone stretched out the first 2 missions of Halo CE (mostly the second mission) and then stopped. It really needed/ needs some kind of continuation/ DLC to properly cap it off IMO.

Nah, I played all the Halo Campaigns, excluding Halo 5, since… wait there’s a Halo 5?
All jokes aside, I would make the hot take that though the story is not as good as the original 3,
HALO INFINITE is *better* in terms of enjoyment, compared to Halo 1 - 3.
I thoroughly enjoyed Infinite’s combat, boss fights, and exploration(which includes finding skulls).
I wish Infinite had more environments, which would have firmly cemented my opinion.
NOTE: I still hold Halo 1, 2, and 3 very close to my heart, and the stories were INFINITELY better than Halo infinite.

The story of Halo Infinite is unfinished. It feels like the first half of a campaign. I was fully expecting, and happy to pay for, a £20-£30 DLC expansion with new biome regions to explore in Free Roam, and more story missions to wrap up the story.
This is like if Halo CE ended the moment the Flood were revealed.

The open world just kinda killed it for me. So samey, no sense of urgency, to be honest I think by the time I'd gotten through the open world padding I had pretty much lost the plot and didn't really absorb much of the story. The bullet sponge bosses were kind of tedious as well, I've always thought Halo worked better with boss 'situations' rather than fighting literal bosses. Like in this case, going through Escharum's gauntlet was a whole lot more memorable and fun for me than fighting any of the actual bosses.
I've been debating giving it a second chance though - I had a thought that if I didn't play it on legendary I could maybe just ignore all the tedious stuff and just focus on the story. I've heard doing a no-grapplehook playthrough makes it better too

Honestly while I thought halo infinite story was ten times better then halo 5 story, at the same time though I felt there was so many miss opportunities with this story mostly with Cortana and guardians not being the main villain from the very start, but replace her with atreox which is confusing because he was the main villain for halo wars 2 and the fact they replaced Cortana with atreox really made no sense to me but that’s just my opinion.

Even if they wait all that time they were going to fire the ring… and kill them selfs too???
Halo 1-3 works so well because they believed in transcending to a new place “the path to salvation” “the great journey” and the kicker is mercy truth and regret knew about it’s killing capabilities but didn’t tell the rest of the covenant because they needed their belief and patriotism. THAT is what makes the original trilogy (odst, reach) so compelling and fantastic
343 literally messes up every time the try and make a “compelling” story because they try and “add more” to our do BUNGIE

I would've also really liked if the random spartans we found throughout the campaign were actual characters we knew and not NewSpartanMadeJustForThisGame that we had no emotional investment in. What if that was Fred or Kelly in the tower being tortured and dying in chief's arms? That would've made my blood boil and set out to WRECK the Banished.

Mendicant Bias went against its creators and joined the because of logic plague loses after by Offensive Bias and is sealed in who knows how many different pieces and is left with 1 thought for itself attonement, Cortana turned against her creators and decided with her second life to control the galaxy again by the logic plague from the Flood but Mendicant had the Flood at its side to keep whispering its ears.......Cortana didnt she chose to control the galaxy still and to destroy those who didnt fall in line and made someone like Atriox a representative of his people as a whole despite he isnt a leader of them, hes the leader of a Covenant split group named the Banished, so he seems to represent the Banished and not the whole of Doisac........and blam-o when Atriox chose the Banished, Cortana sought fit to destroy his home planet ....instead of damage his groip on the Ark or the other places they could of been operating at, so she attaked... NO destroyed an not all innocent races planet, sure they themselves basically destroyed themselves in lore BUT STILL its a planet she destroyed for unjust reasons, but everyone seems fine with Cortana dying, im not i want Cortana to have survived and go through what Mendicant couldnt, to try and fix what she destroyed and thats herself, she will forever be in Chiefs heart so he wont turn her down, but the UNSC she threatened, colonies , the Covenant, the Forerunners, she needs to attone for her actions logic plaguebor not she should not leave as this type of character so the Weapon can take her place, she can and Cortana can be her own character with her own arc, like i love my scenario of she survives and unknowingly is being hunted by an ONI operative sent aboard the Infinity to do so, and this operative is you, Crimson team from Halo 4 spartan ops now Oni your multiplayer soldier, but when you first meet Cortana shes just an orb, an orb because if you come to senses would you want to look at yourself in the mirror after what she did? So she hides as an ai named Ghost or something more elaborate than that, but the entire time before you find out who she really is shes forcing you to do the right thing no matter the cost, you come to near death a number of times but survive, but you run into the Chief sure enough after you split from Cortana because she needs to be in a terminal to do Forerunner things and something happens to you and Chief finds you before something critical happens, but as you climb out of situation, you see the Chief ready his gun and shout where is she, the Weapon is like no Chief its impossible, but he finds out through the Weapon Cortana is alive, Chief is ready because he sees an Oni design on your armor and knows what theyre about, cortana is his responsibility always and it gets worse when the Weapon reveals your mission that Cortana herself alone couldnt crack, youre there to kill Cortana, BAM Chief being a spartan 2 sweeps you to the ground but his armor locks up and knows the Weapon cant do that because her functions are locked by Halsey like when they set failsafe, Cortana screams JOHN, and explains to him why to let you live and she knew deep in her heart why an oni agent would be aboard the ship, but she knew you needed a path of the ring too so used you basically for attonement but also notices you too needed attonement so you both are doing good on the ring together, make it Halo CE even more but not so graphically, when the Banished attacked something damaged your ability to talk, so now you have your character like the Rookie but a voice in your head but also a voice for yourself who knows what youre gonna say because of neuro link.
so if Cortana could survive and have Halo CE style missions with you again and her as main character again trying to fix the damage she caused then im all for it, her destroying Zeta in an effort to eliminate the Bainshed hurt the UNSC worse because where the F is Laskey or any other spartan(books maybe but come on) so blowing Zeta didnt do jackshit but make things worse guess delay Halo ring array but dam come on Cortana is a vast character that doesnt deserve Halo 5 ever again and Infinite trying to cover up what Halo 4 Cortana looked like is horid, she needs to live to save Halo because it wasnt just Chief who saved everyone 23 years ago in CE Cortana had the index, she had the info on what Halos true purpose is, without her mr Halo wouldnt of survived and 343i need to remember that, and both the Weapon,Cortana and Halsey can live together lol and have different angles to themselves but also can be the same as theyre all complex enough but sure let Cortana die a mass murderer and making things worse and destroy her character worse than tv Cortana watching Chief get some with Covenant woman 😅

It was badly executed ... Zeta Halo had a crazy lore potential, Xalanyn (the endless) is basically the only new thing we learned, but left unexplored and unexplained. Then the small teaser about offensive bias being deployed, so either a jump in the past with mendicant vs offensive. Or brand new lore about offensive bias and mendicant, now that we've had Halo Epitaph.. with the final end quote being something like "i (offensive) watch uppon you (mendicant), with our past, present and future story" but nope... nothing in Infinite cause they gave us on the "next platform for 10 years".
The banished etc.. lore is interesting but we come after Zeta Halp is destroyed so we don't really have that lore at least we didn't live through that lore... so yeah badly executed :/

The reason i didnt like Infinite is its just ok and 343i shouldnt just settle for ok story they need a story to change a generation like Halo 2, Chief getting all emotional gets in the way of defining other characters, like the pilot v Chief was great but Chief holding onto Griffin took a little too long and imagine if Jegga was there grabbing something important from the Tower but got there after you killed Chatlok and slashes at you holding a Griffin who would of survived but takes the blow you would of died of and has that sad scene with Griffin, it fills Jeggas a threat to watch out for because you could have the Weapon analyzing and concludes with his swords cut through spartan armor very easily not many blades can do that........and he chooses the most vulnerable spots on spartans shes like hes very lethal and Chiefs all like so am i, o and this chat takes place while walking so no wasted cutscenes. 343i needs to learn to adapt Halo 2s style of story telling where cutscenes do more than 1 thing its telling you, my version of Griffins death showcases Jegga as a threat a lethal threat but also smart since he has a mission to get o instead of fighting you Chief fires at Jegga after quickly gaining his footing and maintaining his surroundings is safe and then mourns over Griffin, but 343i feels like its wasting cutscenes, Imagine when Chief jumps from the Gabrakken to the pelican instead dives to the ring after coordinating where the Weapon is and when you liberate camp Tremonious have a cutscene of the pilot on his pelican bitchin like how could i leave the Chief thats just what i do isnt it run when it gets heavy why am i like this! What do i do now....bloop bloop friendly has appeared on map and he answers the call and is shocked and exclaims at Chief how what where frantically and Chief breaks through like we need extraction at Tremonious and Pilot, "We?", then play out what happens, so i guess more or less the cutscenes could use a little more to flesh out characters on top of what we got, with Gabrakken jump you get a Halo 2 type of cutscene where Chief jumped to the Forward unto Dawn from Cairo station if you can fit in blowing up a ship in this then bam we back babay if this happened but it didnt, so Halo 7 has to do better please o please

The handling of Cortana in Halo Infinite was what killed the story for me. Straight up embarrassing. Lazy, rushed, and honestly just disrespectful. Halo 5 put the character in a rough spot but it was completely salvageable. Imagine if bungee “soft rebooted” the story after the backlash halo 2 got.
Despite halo 5’s pitfalls, it set up what could have been the next halo 3. But instead we got infinite. The story is clearly unfinished and what we get it okay at times and at others it just makes me ask “How the heck did they mess that up so bad?”.
The story is so self contained and that was a huge mistake especially after halo 5. From a story telling perspective it doesn’t matter how much people didn’t like halo 5, by just jumping into an entirely new story they threw the whole thing off.
New fans are gonna have a terrible time knowing what’s going on and will likely feel cheated out of what could have been. I was new to the series just a few years ago and I played all the campaigns just before infinite came out. I enjoyed ever campaign, “including 5” and I’ve noticed a lot of other new fans also enjoy it if they get the chance to play if for themselves and not let all the content creators make their opinion for them. When I got to infinite I was very disappointed in how they unceremoniously steam rolled into a brand new plot with barely any onscreen development that got us there.
Cortana was always an important part of the story and halo 4 fleshed her out in a way that made her more integral then ever. Of course hey also made her hot so that’s probably the only real reason anyone gave a shit. But they also killed her off and I’ll admit I was glad when they brought her back in 5 because I felt there was more to do with the character and honestly I was curious to see where the evil Cortana story was gonna go. I figured she would be redeemed in the next game and I was right but the way they did it was awful.
I’m sick of hearing people say it was profound or fitting, you’re entitled to like it but acting like it was perfect storytelling is ridiculous. By killing her offscreen they made it to where her resurrection in 5 was completely pointless as it didn’t go anywhere besides ruining the character and making it easier to replace her. I can’t help but feel that 343 has just always had a hate boner for Cortana as they killed her off in their first game and when there was backlash they brought her back and destroyed her character only to give her a shity offscreen death.
Infinite has some decent character writing with the tiny microscopic cast that it keeps after purging the whole of halo 5’s cast, but even with so few characters there clearly rushed or just confusing moments.
Halo infinite does set up potential for a great story but I’m not gonna give these writers credit for a story that hasn’t been written until I see that story. And boy do they got some work to do to put things back on track cuz certain things like Cortana’s death were some of the worst writing moments I’ve ever seen not just in halo but anywhere.

Too many missed opportunities and inconsistencies for me with Infinite I'm afraid. The opening cutscene would have been the best mission in the game if it was a mission. The open world was pretty devoid of things going on and got boring quickly with little biome/ visual differences, also I think a Halo open world should be more Just Cause and less FarCry. Mission variety was poor and story buildup/ pacing was an issue for me. I Would have liked a few more big set pieces on the open world like H3's battles or a traditional vehicle mission. I liked the idea of capturing FOB's but I really wish there was a main hub base where all of your saved marines go to, missions can be started from and key characters such as the Pilot, Laskey or Palmer reside to add to the feeling of being in a military and being part of operations.
I don't think this is the best representation of the banished and could have introduced them better in their first appearance in the mainline titles. HW2 portrayed them visually more brutal and I wish that would have translated more here. They still play too much like the covenant if that makes sense.
I'm also not really keen on the Endless, not that I'm not open to the idea of new factions; more the fact that I'm skeptical of when IP's start to introduce time travel or time altering mechanics - it just ruins things.

How can yall say this story was good???? Like WTF is wrong with yall. It's the worst story of the franchise. Stop being blinded by nostalgia or tryna mix in your feeling about the game play. Cause just on story alone....shit was absolute garbage

For me it was OKAY, but it was forgettable for me, there isn't any mission that makes it stand out. I didn't really care for The Banished, Atriox. Or even Harbinger, I feel they tried too hard to make a Halo campaign. I would rather of had The Didact in it, but he's gone for good sadly. Moving forward I kinda hope they remove The Banished and Atriox. Would rather go up against Mendicant Bias or I guess The Endless. Hell what even happened to The Guardians? We only see 1, so where are the rest? They just said screw it and threw them out.

As soon as 343 retconned forerunner’s from being humans to a whole new species I lost interest in the whole forerunner plot…
