- A closer look at the different ways Amish light their homes.

My Dawdy house (Haus) is allowed to have electric to refrigerate my medicines, but to keep expenses down i use wall hung oil lanterns with lightly scented oils. They are strategically placed on 1800's cast iron cradles that have mirrored reflector plates on top and can swing left to right. The lanterns are removable so they can be carried room to room and cleaned and refilled easily. I also have have solar/battery powered micro LED string lights that circle the ceiling edges at the walls and i have rechargeable battery lights for going outside at night to check my greenhouses and garden patches for wild critters looking for a snack at my expense.

@@jlc88cowan88 I Was born and raised Amish up until i was 12 when my mom passed away and my English father raised me in his ways which were good and Godly also. We have lived in Virginia since after the Civil War. I Live in a small Amish/Mennonite community near Farmville, Virginia.
My aunt had a solar panel on her barn. Its only to be use to recharge the buggy battery. Thats it and nothing else.
Interesting subject about the light switches. A few weeks back,my wife & I were down in the Shipshewana,Indiana area & we seen a new Amish home being built & wondered if local building codes require them to wire new houses. That would be an interesting topic to cover. Thanks for all the great content, really enjoy it.
Not familiar with codes in that area but generally I don't think it's the case. It's more Amish opting to do this. Though, some might have to adhere to requirements in some localities

Hey Erik, Fuel burners seem so dangerous. I once wired a Mennonite store that had gone modern. I could not believe the miles of copper propane lines in the attic. An Amish man saw me struggling to wire the front porch light (the steel siding was my problem). He offered to help me with the wiring. Me, a high voltage electician getting coaching from an old Amish guy. Anyway, since you are not selling books, tell us what you do these days.

Always interesting to know and learn about their ways. We are soon moving to an area with a lot of Amish neighborhood and this helps a lot with our curiosity. We get to be friends already with some Amish who built our house.

There is a question I have been meaning to ask Erik. You have shown us the Amish utilize propane for cooking, refrigeration and light. In this posting, you showed us a larger propane tank or pig ... @ 00:51 ... but 😶will or do they use propane furnaces for heat?
Would be Interested to know if any Amish Communities are getting involved in Solar Lights and other applications, with Sun being a Natural source of Energy?

Funny story, I didn't know any PA dutch when I was first living with my foster family. Naturally, they used it to their advantage to tease me. When they first told me to "make out the light" I looked at the hot kerosene lamp and then said that I would NOT kiss that lamp no matter what they said to do. That story was passed around for years.

I've realized looking into the history of their founding and having close Mennonite neighbors is that the Ordnung is an Order in true Catholic sense. Each Order in the mother church has their own dress, vows and customs. Jesuits are very different to Francians for example. The only thing choose was to have both vocations instead of one or the other.
It's so baffling to me why batteries are ok, but electricity is not. The Amish ways are so interesting. Your videos always "enlighten" me.
In a nutshell, batteries are by their nature more limited and less likely to invite other technologies. It's a bit more complicated than that but batteries serve a need without going full bore connected to the public grid. I think my videos on tech not being evil and the one answering whether Amish are hypocrites go into more on this IIRC. I'm happy to hear the vids are helpful :)
How do you make a propane post lamp, like the first one you showed on wheels? The magazine rack is not needed.

I have been watching all your videos and really enjoying them, but I have a question - more out of curiosity than anything... it's your "accent" - in that I notice the way you say the word "home" as "heum"... and I am trying for the life of me to figure out from what part of the country you are from? I'm just really curious and interested. I have heard that word pronounced that way before but never could figure it out :) - - anyway, great videos and thank you for posting!!
Does the oillmaps smells?
Seems so dangerous to have those gas lamps piped into their houses.
What about carbon monoxide poisoning due burning all of these fossil fuels?
I'm not Amish but live off grid. Use gasoline pressure lamps and stove, kerosene wick type lamps. I have a propane stove and lights as well and some lithium ion battery powered lights. Burn wood and coal for heat. I have a CO detector with a digital readout. It always reads 0.
