Just an update like I said before they sent me out a thermostat with no instructions on how to install it but thanks to RUclips I figured it out. After installing the thermostat I have cooked one beef brisket and one pork butt roast everything work fine. I still have a problem with paying close to $500 for a grill / smoker and in three months have to repair it myself. But just to be fair to them after I made the repairs my last two cooking events the smoker worked great.
ELAM305 That’s good news. Hope it continues to work the way it’s supposed to. $500 is not a lot for a pellet cooker with this cooking area. But it shouldn’t be having issues period.
ELAM305 same is happening to me. I have been dealing with an ErL code since May! They sent me a new control panel and the same thing happened. Sept.....still nothing from PitBoss. Ugh.
This smoker has been an absolute nightmare for me. I have the same error code problem after its working fine for about 20-30 minutes. Very frustrating when time is of the essence. I did my homework on this thing too, and now I’m dealing with this crap. On top of that- temp fluctuations are a major issue with the unit as you were saying, and one second the thing is billowing smoke- and then the next nothing. Super frustrating when you are getting zero smoke during the first hour of the cook which is during the most crucial time for the meat to absorb smoke. I finally gave Pit Boss a call and they want me to access the wiring and and start crossing wires to troubleshoot the blower. I wish I would have never purchased this thing. As soon as I get it working it’s going on Craigslist. I’ve also decided I hate pellet smokers- too messy (they run everywhere) and pellets just don’t provide the smoke flavor you get with actual wood. It’s a real pain emptying the pellet hopper on this thing as well since the chute plugs up and you have to shake the unit left to right to get more pellets to fall out, and you never can get all of them out so I find myself shoving a broom handle in there to get all the pellets. Meanwhile a bunch of pellets end up on the ground and if you leave some there and it rains then the pellets expand and look like animal turds.
Everything you said is exactly what I experienced. I’ve sent multiple emails to Pit Boss along with my video. I have yet to receive a response. Never ever ever again and if I see anyone at Wal mart or Lowe’s I will tell them about my experience.
@@bordo3k I had been working with PitBoss through email with the same issue. I was promised a replacement controller and temp probe and I have never heard anything else from them and I have never received any parts. I have been working this issue for more than a year.
Robert Lantiegne 4 minutes ago THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING ANY PIT BOSS SMOKER! Excellent video. Your videos are so incredibly well done. I bought my Pit Boss Pro August 2022. I used it first time in the end of September. On my third use in October, I had the error message ER1. After unplugging the smoker for 30 minutes there was no error display and the smoker was operational and was able to complete the smoke. After reading PIT BOSS manual Trouble Shooting section, I check for fat residue on the heat probe mounted inside cabinet on back wall. Probe was clean without any deposits. Just before Christmas, I started an overnight smoke with 80 lbs of pork shoulder. The next morning I checked smoker and it had done an automatic shut down, displaying error code ER1 and the pork inside was102 degrees. The pork was completely raw and due to spoilage concerns I threw away the pork that cost $82.47 at Costco. I called Pit Boss Customer Service and requested a Warantee return and replacement. They refused and sent me a replacement probe. I installed it which takes a couple hours. I did one trial smoke with smoker empty and got same error message. Pit Boss advised that they would not repair or replace smoker and sent me a new control panel. The smoker works, for now. RUclips is full of dozens of videos showing Pit Boss Pro owners instructing how to replace the probes and control panels. I will NEVER BUY A PIT BOSS smoker again. The rate of failure of the control panel is too high for me to gamble on. To replace either probe or control panel requires removing door, racks, rack brackets, entire chimney assembly and and hopper door stop mounter on top of smoker, then turning smoker upside down resting on smoker top. These smokers are $600.00 and Pit Boss does not honor their stated repair or replace FIVE year Warantee. Sending replacement parts and requiring owners to repair their smoker just does not cut it. Thank you for posting this video. It will save me time by not doing the same chimney and water pan placement changes. The problem is the smoker and the failure of the company to honor the Warantee which leaves us all out in the cold trying to repair these poorly designed worthless smokers. I am in the process of writing old fashioned letters to the state and federal consumer protection agencies.
You are absolutely correct that Pit Boss is a Pit Loss!! Thanks for watching and hope you check out my other videos and tell your friends about my channel! I need more subscribers 😎
My smoker still doesn't work even after they sent me a new control board that I struggled to fix. It worked once, then never again. It's quicker to throw my meat on the grill. Hopefully the company will figure this out
After about 30 cooks I am now having this problem. It has been rock solid since January, great at holding temps and now its all over the place with temp spikes to 375 on a 225 setting. I contacted PB and after waiting 2 weeks for an answer they told me to do the exact same thing, and clean the temp probe. Nothing worked, I have been watching it and it seems like it stops feeding pellets so I have been hitting prime to get through my last cook. Finally PB is sending me a new board and temp prob, fingers crossed it will fix the issue. Honestly not sure I would buy another PB.
Hello Sir, truly sorry to hear about the issues, pit boss needs to recall these cookers I swear. Good luck and Thanks for watching and for the comment 😎
I've had this same issue come up repeatedly after only 5 cooks. On the last cook that lasted ~8 hours I probably had the ErH code come up 20 times. I kept having to unplug and restart the unit, really frustrating. I called customer support today and they tell me that it is definitely the temperature probe and they are sending me a new one. Based on these comments I am not confident this will fix the issue, but we will see. This could be a great smoker if it were just more reliable.
Sorry to hear about your problems. What’s really sad is you and I aren’t the only ones! And yes this would be an awesome cooker if it worked properly. I would so give it another chance if PB wanted to make it right. Otherwise I’m glad I took it back and spreading the word to others that they need to be aware before spending money on this smoker.
@Skwillson9876 I never received the probe. I found out is was going to take 6 weeks to get it. Couldn’t deal with that do I took the unit back for a refund.
PitBoss promised me parts but never delivered. Mine has been down since I bought it for the same problem. I have contacted them several times and they have promised parts; waited for almost a year now.
Hello Merlin, I am sorry to hear about your issues. This unit is a piece of crap and I am so happy I got rid of mine! I have since upgraded to Green a mountain Grills and have not had one issue in over 50 + cooks
6 months in and I just started getting erh codes. Unplug restart and it’s good for 10 minutes. Now when I plug it back in the temp will go from 250 to 490 back to 300 to 225 to 450 within seconds until it says erl. These things suck, I should have just gotten a traeger
Ha! Thanks for the shout out man! :) Sorry to hear you are still having issues man. That ErH code got me scratching my head on what to have you try next...
Props to YOU for putting in the leg work and posting it here. I haven't t even taken delivery of my 7 series and this has me nervous. But good lookin' out.
Thank you for watching and for the kind words. I wish I could say I got a lemon with this one. But if you go through the comments below, you’ll see that I’m not the only one. I truly hope you have no issues with yours. I really like this unit but the lack of customer service was another reason I returned the unit. I now have a Green Mountain Grill and have had zero problems.
I have one and have had pitboss send board and prob. Still problems shutting down. Put a fan on back of control board under unit runs great. Bad design board gets too hot on backside
I had the same issue! For some reason mine shoots up to 380F (then very slowly declines to temp, then back up again) when it's set at 250F, but when i set it at 225F it maintained 225F +-5F. I took the entire thing apart, and i believe the issue lies in the temp probe in the unit. I don't think that temp probe's wiring is insulated correctly. When I smoke stuff, the drippings can fall on top of the probe's "protective housing" if the meat's too far back. There is also a mating surface at the bottom back part where, I am almost certain, drippings seep in and short the probe causing the control system to continuously increase in temp, causing the unit to overheat and generate the first error code that sets off. I also found that if every rack is full of meat, the heat is very inconsistent throughout the smoker. The 4th tray back gets a ton of heat, and the 3rd tray forward gets a ton of heat, and the rest of the unit lags +-15F. When I cook a pork butt, I've also found that rotating the meat 180 degrees every 2 hours or so provides the most even cook. One time, I left it there until the back part of the probe was at 200F, and the forward part 190F. With all that said, letting the unit cool down, shop vacuuming out ashes, cleaning the temp probe, and unit's the best way I've found to keep this thing going. But, I never had this issue with my Oklahoma Joe, or WSM...
Thanks for watching and the comments. If you read below, were not the only ones having the same problem! I took mine back for a refund but Pit Boss needs to send out a recall on this unit and give Everyone their money back.
I just bought a pit boss series 4 vertical smoker yesterday and hopefully I don't have the same problem. I did want to mention that the owners manual says if cooking at low temperature, keep the cap more open. If smoking for an extended period of time, move water pan up higher to allow water to last longer. I bought the pit boss series 4 from Lowe's and maybe the manual is different from the one you have.
I have the same smoker and have had nothing but problems, sometimes it won't even warm up before throwing the erh code. The first and second one I exchanged at the store because it was within 90 days, now I'm stuck waiting on pitboss to send me parts for the same issue on the 3rd smoker. The last 6 months with this have been a nightmare and I wish I never bought it.
Hello Daniel, I’m sorry to hear you are having issues too. If you ready through the comments below you will see that you and I aren’t the only ones. It’s Sad that Pit Boss won’t recall these units. I would highly recommend the Green mountain Grill line of cookers. I have the Daniel Boone and have not had one problem 😎
Mine is a new series 7 I’ve used it like 5 times and now I’m getting the ER H code. Temp is all over the place just like you described. I don’t see an update video so I guess it’s still broken?
Hello and I’m sorry to hear your having issues. Pit Boss needs to recall all these cookers! They know they have problems. I got so frustrated that I returned mine and got my money back. Good luck with yours.
I’m having the same problem with mine only had it a year next month. Would you suggest just calling them asking for the parts and do the repairs? I’ve got 8 birds to do this years. Mine shutting off when cooking at 350. 4 time in 3 or 4 hours
@@marco785 I got rid of mine shortly after this video was posted. However I’ve heard that their customer service has gotten better. I’d give them the opportunity to help.
I have the same smoker and have had nothing but trouble since October last year. I have tried several times to try and get it to work but no good. I just emptied all the pellets and am trying it again. I have contacted pit boss March 16 and haven’t heard anything yet. I wouldn’t buy another
Well I tried a butt and the unit worked perfectly. That was a few days ago. I decided to do half a briscuit and about 30 minutes into cooking it shut down with an erl code. I watched your video again and noticed you have an extension cord running your smoker. Well I do too. Could it be spikes in power causing it?
I was just do some last minute checking before going down to Bunnings (Australian Home Depot style store) to buy one of these, glad I watched this first!
Hello Andrew, Thanks for watching and for the comment. Read through the comments below and you will see that I’m not the only one that has had the same issues. However I know a few guys that have never had a problem. That said, I would look at another Brand as an alternative. 😎
I have a Series 3 Copperhead due to be delivered in two days. This isn't the first video about error codes I've seen since I ordered mine. I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with mine. Thanks to videos like yours and Grill Sergeant's at least I have some ideas about what to expect and how to try to navigate through them.
Hello Mr. Black Thanks for watching and I hope you don’t have any issues with yours. They aren’t all bad, however as I’ve stated Dansons customer service is really bad. And Yes Andrew the (Grill Sergeant) is a good guy and his units seem to be working great.
Same issue with ours. Unfortunately no answer or call back from out boss I will try and raise the water pan and open up the smoke tube and hope it works got three pork butts to cook Saturday.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. There are known issues on this smoker. I have been surprised on the comments I’ve received. I hope the changes you make with the water pan and exhaust help. Good luck with your cook and let me know what happens.
I'm on my 2and Temperature Control, had same code as yours, they also have sent me 2 wiring harnesses or Control boards, it took 2 mos to get parts, mine will be out of 2yr warranty on Christmas. They have been good in sending me parts, except this last one, said because of Covid, Took actually over 2 mos to get parts, but I kept E-mailing every Week asking where my parts are at. Just got them last Saturday. Going to try temperature Control 1st by it's self. I like the moving up the water pan,I'll try that right away. It's just me and my Wife, so usally one thing cooking at a time. Thanks for the tip, Hope it Works !!
Michael thanks for watching and for the comments. I’m glad you at the very least are in contact with Pit Boss or in my case “Pit Loss” lol This can be a very nice cooker if it would just work the way it’s supposed to. Hopefully this will be the last repair/replacement you’ll have to do. Good luck Brother and keep smoking. 😎
So far my vertical has been running within 5 degrees of my set temperature. I have the water pan above the temp probe and have the cap all the way open. Done a few overnight cooks and my meater and inkbird thermometers show it holds steady all night. I have the pro series 4 vertical that Lowes sells, but its similar to the copperhead.
Also did you make sure that the heat diffuser over the firepot was positioned correctly? I've seen that some people turn the vent holes to the front and back instead of sideways.
Hello Carlos, yes the heat deflector was in the correct position. The unit worked great for four cooks the it was all over the place. Don’t know if you have but read through the other msgs below. There are a lot of guys having the same issues with temps and ERh error codes. But Hey, it looks like you got a good one! I really did like mine before the troubles. Oh well I’ve got me a GMG now and this unit is pretty good 😎 Thanks for the comment! And the View!
Same problem here too! I run at 225 and same thing about 2 to 2 1/2 hours into my cook and that dreaded ErH code 😡 I hope you find a solution, I want to love this pit but she is pissing me off.
Pit Boss told me it’s the control panel. They are sending me another one. What pissed me off was it is on backorder coming from China. Won’t be here until July. I took the unit back to wal mart and got my money back
@@RicsBBQSpecialties I had a similar issue, but it turns out to be my fault. I had the box that sits in the base of the smoker sitting wrong. The opening was right in the direction of the thermostat(to the back), and that burned it out causing it to fail and overheat. Well I replaced that because they sent me a new one and it has worked perfect every since. I have had the unit for about 3 years now. Use it all the time and love it.
What type of pellet smoker do you recommend using. I have noticed that do to the poor location of the control board which is located at the bottom of the smokerdoor it's very easy to spill liquids on to it as you're pulling food in and out of the unit . Thank you for all the help.
ELAM305 I’m not a pellet cooker. Ive been cooking for over 40 years on stick burners. I gave this a shot and with the issues I had, I’m just going to keep using my stick burners and UDS cookers. They don’t give me error codes😎
Thanks for watching and really sorry to hear your having issues too. Not that it’ll make you feel better but if you read through the comments below. Your not the only one. There may be some tips in the comments that may help you. Do like I did and return it😎
I’m currently experiencing the same problem. I clean it all up water is where it should be also remove all pellets and still having an ERL code . Calling supports .
RI Viewtech RI That’s the same thing they were going to send me. It was on backorder and would be 12 week delivery. Hope you get yours sooner than that! 👍🏼
As a follow up, I end up bringing smoker back to store and argue the point that it was purchase back in January 2020 and it was too soon to break on me. They end up replacing the unit for me so I know have another one hopefully it last .
I got mine last weekend. First cook it did same thing to me about 6 times. Emailed them and haven't heard back. Like you said I get it times are tough but no excuse for lack of customer service. Everyone has a email address or laptop to work from home. I'm bringing mine back today unfortunately.
I had issues with the heat spiking on me. Pit boss sent me a new probe and control panel. I changed them out and so far after 10+ cooks, everything works greats. I also raised my cap and water pan just for gp. I absolutely love this smoker. One note is that when pit boss sent me the new probe, I noticed that the wire is longer then the one that was on it. So I’m not sure if it was just a bad batch of probes or not. Anyways I love your channel and just want to say keep up the great work.
Hello Greg and thanks for the watch and for the comment. I am glad you got yours fixed. I really liked the unit especially the size. My issue was it was going to take 6-8 weeks to get my parts. Ultimately I returned the unit. However if you go through the other comments believe you will see that this is a common problem.
i purchased a copper head Pit Boss yesterday. I took the damn thing home started it and got an ERL CODE. My meat went bad, next day I got a replacement from Lowes. I used it last night and it is working perfectly. I am just a little concerned for the future of this gril-- with all the codes the commenters are telling me about. It is a handsome grill, but they screwed up with the electronics.
Hello Jim, Thanks for watching and for the comment. Good luck with your 2nd unit. I really dig the design however I believe they are eventually going to have the same issues.
I've been having issues with my 5 series. Very frustrating. When I first got it it ran great, after about 6 months it started acting up, sometimes it runs mint and sometimes it doesn't.
Hey sir saw your video and I’m sorry that sucks! So I’m on a forum with a group of PitBoss Smokers. It seems that there is an updated smoker. Old verticals didn’t have this part that is now on the back wall of the smokers.
Pit boss told me it is the control panel. They are sending me another one, however I found out it’s on backorder and coming from China. I wasn’t scheduled to get it until July. I wound up taking the smoker back to wal mart and got my money back.
Ric’s BBQ & Specialties another forum user was told the same and they sent her a new control unit and it happened again. She returned the vertical and then received a new one and she has that same new part on the back of her wall that wasn’t on the original
It is interesting that you bring this up. Our’s from Lowe’s did not have it on the back wall either. I wish they would let people know that it is an older model. It would have saved us all time on putting it together and trying to get it to work right. Thank you for sharing and if possible can you message me the PB forum info? We would love to join it. Thank you
Ric... I got the copper head for father's day 2020 ran it 2 times no problem then it hits the same thing .... I cleaned it out hot so I could see what's going on ... my problem was just like you too hot cap and water to low and also the pellets were starting to ignite in the augers tube and going more and more up the tube.... i am going to clean out the hopper and watch it ... did you figure it out ?
jon reynolds Hello Jon, I talked to Pit Boss and first they said the cap was too low and needed to be unscrewed all the way up to the point of almost falling off. Lol okay my question was why is it adjustable? Then they said the water pan had to have water? Yes it has water! It’s called a water pan. Long story short, after I was told that they would send me a replacement control panel and temp probe but it would take 6 weeks to deliver! I took the unit back to Wal mart and got my money back.
jon reynolds I really liked the cooker at first. I even made a couple videos that you can see in my library. I was more disappointed in the customer service. 6 weeks to get the parts is just unacceptable
Bro James and I had issues with a different model pt boss last fall. I know my faith in their products has been SHOOK... I hope they make it right bro.
That’s a question for The Pit Loss company. They definitely have issues with this unit and they know it. This model needs to be recalled. Thanks for watching Mike. If you have one of these I wish you luck. 😎
@@RicsBBQSpecialties they really should I was on the phone with them almost everyday this week and they refuse to admit the design flaw. It's such a shame. Hopefully I can figure out a way to fix this. I will keep you updated.. Great Content!
@@joshkrepps8100 yes! My friend and his father helped me out they moved the control panel to the side very easy they cut the metal for it to mount then they used heat resistant fabric (up to 1000°) to protect the control panel from the heat of the smoker. I've used it about 9 times since and no issues no problem everything is away from the grease tray and I don't have to worry about anything
Tri-Tip Junkie I wouldn’t recommend the Verticals to anyone just from the problems Ric is experiencing and the issues I have with mine. I would however recommend one of the pellet grills they have as I’ve never had one issue with mine.
Yeah Mike, but you know everyone else I talk to has only had the temp difference issue. I can deal with that. Lol But yeah you may want to hold off a while
I wouldn’t recommend pit boss period. I bought a 700 series and it had an err from day one. Never worked and I spent 90 minutes on hold and was told how to fix it myself. Still didn’t work. Total garbage company.
Is this something pit boss will fix? I have this unit, it sucks! Seen other companies are making heat deflector mods for some models, but couldn't find anything for the vertical units, tia
I have no idea. I took mine back for a refund shortly after this video posted. How old is yours? I hear the electronics have gotten better. You might want to checkout another channel. Grill Sergeant he is sponsored by pit loss
Sorry bro you’re having issues. I bought the pro series and the legs collapsed on me. I called the warranty with Lowe’s. They send me a gift card to buy another one. I just put this one together myself so far it’s working good the only code that popped up was I believe like ER1 pellet was stuck .I just unplugged it, plugged it right back in it’s been working great. I’ve been smoking since 6 AM it’s about 2 o’clock already and so far so good
Hello and thanks for watching. I truly hope you have better luck with your pit boss than I did. Unfortunately if you go look through the comments below I’m not the only one.
I've got the same vertical Pit Boss pro and this thing has been a pain since day one. Error codes, temp control, temp probe and now it's not igniting. I jumped on here to see if there was a quick fix. Guess I'll fire up the grill instead. If anyone reads this and thinking about buying a Pit Boss....Don't. It's a waste of money and good luck with customer service.
Hello Robert. I hate to hear this but am not surprised, just go through the comments below and you will see that yes this unit is crap and Pit Loss is doing nothing about it. Yes they will send you a replacement probe or control panel only to have it fail again. I have since got a Green mountain grill and am totally happy with it.
First sorry for your hassle. I have the same grill and raised the water pan and kept it full. Mine has been working better. I cleaned the ignitor first. I hope they make it right.
Did you ever get this figured out? I have the vertical series 7. The first handful of times I used it, it was flawless. The last 3-4 times however have ended with the ERH code. These cooks have ranged in temps between 250-350. To have made sure the cap was fully open and water in the pan. I however did not raise it like you did but that didn't appear to help you.
Hello! Thanks for watching and for your reply. Shortly after the video I returned the unit for a refund. I was under the impression that They fixed their electronic issues. How old is your smoker?
@@RicsBBQSpecialties around 4 years or so. I have ordered a new internal heat probe as many have said that has fixed their issues with the ERH code. I hope so.
Sorry you having trouble with the Pit Boss, if you would like I will this video as an end screen to whichever video I have thats doing the best right now. Just let me know.👊
I just had this problem with mine, 3rd smoke. Started it about 4:30am as I'm smoking a brisket. Came out at 8 am and my temp sensor said 385° but is set at 225°. I opened the door to let heat out but noticed it was no where near that hot. Then it threw Eth code. I removed water pan and the diverter on top of the fire pot and noticed my pellets had built up and ignited the pellets in the anger tube. I unplugged the unit, plugged nack in, turned on and primed to remove the hot pellets in the tube and used a metal utensil to spread out the pellets in the fire pot. Problem fixed for now. Using Pitt Boss Competition pellets.
update: ErH came up twice more. Grill set to 225, lcd readout telling me its 385, I put my own digital probe on top rack and only reading 181. Transfered my brisket to my offset stick burner. Will be taking this unit back for a refund.
Hello Kain, well that sucks and I’m sorry to hear that. I thought you might have figured it out. This thing is really a Pit Loss and a piece of junk! Hopefully your return goes well. Good luck Sir 👊🏼
It took 3 months for them to send me a new probe, I'm waiting on a warranty complete 850 pro its been 3 weeks so far I called they told me the order has been sent to the warehouse I will get a email with tracking # when its shipped. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
I just got a slightly used series 3 electric Pit Boss today and set it at 275 it was reading 160 on the actual temp, but probe said 260 and then 10 mins later had an erH code and now every time I turn it on it goes straight to the erH code and won't fire up.
Let it cool down for a couple hours or overnight. One thing I was told first was to make sure the exhaust is open as far as it will go. Make sure your heat deflector is positioned correctly with the ports to the left and right.?
I did not read all the comments, but I had this very same issue. I tried all the same things as you in this video with no luck. I did not get anywhere at first with Customer Support. I bought a new temp probe off Amazon and it solved everything. The stock temp sensor is garbage. If you have not tried replacing this yet. I would give it a try. I worked for me. Also I did hear back from pit boss and they did send me a new control unit. I am keeping it as a spare cause mine is working fine now. I hope this helps you brother. Best of luck and keep up the tasty meats. -AL
Hello and thanks for watching! I actually got tired of waiting for the parts and took the unit back for a refund. If you go through the comments below you will see that I’m not the only one that has had issues. My Advice? Stay away from Pit Boss. I wound up buying a Green Mountain Grill and it’s Awesome!
Ric, by chance do you only have the Pit Boss only on the electrical circuit ? I know with other pellet smokers too many items on the circuit result in fluctuating temps. Hope they get you fixed up right brother!
Thanks for watching and yeah I’m not the only one,if you went through the comments below you’ll see. I would up taking it back for a refund and am now using a Green Mountain Grill. It is Amazing!
Just got one about a week but have had a different model for about 4 years now make sure all your wiring for the temp sensor is good and not crimped or loose that will cause that code pretty quick and make sure it's clean. Also dumb question is your flame deflector installed the right way facing the side and not front to back they say it can effect the controller/ probe hope this helps looking forward to an update!
Hello Jonas! Thanks for watching and for the information. I did have the deflector the correct way. Although I never really checked the probe wiring itself. I did call Pit Boss and they determined it was the control panel. After waiting 2 weeks and no part showing up, I called PB and was told the panel was on BO and shipping from China at the end of June! To end my story,.... I took it back to wal mart and got my $ back😎
@@RicsBBQSpecialties how did returning it work since it had been used? I am having the same issue and only used it 3 times. I do not have the box anymore though.
Jonas Atkins @Chris Howard I was able to return it with no problems. I didn’t have the box either and had used it 4 times. But I did have the receipt and the operations manual. Good Luck Sir 👊🏼
Jonas Atkins @Chris Howard A Stick Burner! Lol This was my 1st pellet smoker. I didn’t get another and probably won’t. I would up getting the BlackStone Air Fryer combo. I have an array of smokers just tried the pit boss out.
I am going through the same thing I tried every thing pit boss told me I would have my control panel and temperature probe in 7 to 10 days I got an email saying that the parts had shipped when I got the package 5 days later the only part I got was the temperature probe no control panel I called them 3 times and was told I would have the control panel in 7 day it has been almost 2 months and no control panel this thing has been a nightmare since day one
Hello Steven, Sir I feel your anger and if you read through the comments below you will see that there are a few people that are having the same issues. You know when I posted this I was hoping Pit Loss would see this and hopefully someday they will. This unit is absolute JUNK. I have since picked up a Green Mountain Grills cooker and have not had one issue! I highly recommend them. Good luck with yours and hopefully you get the parts you need soon. 👊🏼
Iv'e done well over 50 cooks with a Pro Series Copperhead, Iv'e never had a code and count myself lucky. Iv'e seen many videos about the problems and have no idea how it's never happend to mine. I have the water pan all the way at the bottom, and the chimmney fairly low, you can just barely see the top of the pipe. I think they have issues with the controllers. I'm going to switch over to a Rec Tech wireless eventually.
Hello John, Guess you were one of the lucky ones! It’s sad because the couple cooks I got of it were great and I really liked the size and style of the unit too. Bottom line is the customer service was horrible. I’ve been running Green Mountain Grills Daniel Boone and also the Jim Bowie. Maybe one day get a Rec Tec 😎 Thanks for watching and for the comment.
I’ve had nothing but trouble with this vertical smoker as well! Horribly engineered... it was gifted to us ny my father in law... Mine started smoking in the back inside the pellet reservoir!
Hello Angelo, Thanks for watching and I totally agree with you. This unit is a piece of junk! Pit Boss needs to recall this thing. Have you tried contacting Pit Boss? Hopefully they can help you with the repairs,
Ric's thanks for the Video i was going to buy this smoker but with that occurring problems i will be looking to buy other brand smoker, i can't deal with that kind of a problem after spending that kind of money.
Hello Paul, I appreciate you watching and your comment. I would recommend a Green Mountain Grill. If you go through my videos you will see that after returning the Pit Loss I got the GMG Daniel Boone. This pellet smoker is the real deal.
Sorry to hear about your issues. Pit Boss needs to seriously have a recall on this unit. I took mine back a week after I posted that video. I just picked up a Green Mountain Smoker. This thing is legit😎
Cool, if you ever have any questions, feel free to reach out. My email is Galindostexasbbq@gmail.com or if your on Instagram you can msg me there under my you tube channel name👊🏼
I had trouble with two different PitBoss units, ended up taking g both back to Atwoods who refunded my money....PitBoss took 3 weeks to get me parts on the first 9ne, it worked twice and quite again, so at that time, Atwoods swapped the unit out, second unit never came on, period. I will probably never try Pit Bosd again.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. Yeah Pit Boss has a problem with this unit. Not to mention the lack of customer support. I wound up returning mine for a refund. Now using a Green Mountain Grill. Used over 20 times now and not one issue😎
Bummer, that’s weird. Hopefully the new control board and gauges help out. Despite not having this one, I’m interested to see the outcome. Keep on grillin Ric and let us know!
I had same problem with different brand. The probe was defective. It was reading and sending random temps to controller. I replaced the probe and it fixed the problem.
I got the same code on my first burn. Grill Sergeant to the rescue!! Second burn was fine. My water pan is two holes up from the bottom but I could be moving it now. From reading the comments temp seems to he a systemic problem. I'll be watching to see what they tell you.
Thanks Roy, long story short. I told the unit back to Wal Mart and got a refund. Pit Boss customer service is crap. Good luck on your cooker and hopefully this video gave you a little insight. 👊🏼
1984 BBQ @Mike Phelps Yes They sent the control panel. Thing is before they did they said it was going to take 8 weeks to get it. I wasn’t going to wait the 8 weeks so I took the unit back to wal mart for a refund. I’ve sent PB several emails and left comments on their cust service section of their website. I have yet to get a reply.
I had my pit boss for about a year I love it, Cook ribs, tri tip, chicken your name it I cook it. The Knob broke off I swear I don’t know how it broke off but called the company and they sent me a new display only 1 1/2 weeks to get here and I’m in central California, I love it. I hook it up with the new part going to cool food tomorrow
Hello Ja D! That’s awesome and sounds like you got a good one along with good customer service. If you read the comments below you will unfortunately see that most are stories of units breaking down and not working. Good luck on your future cooks!!
Hello Jose. Thanks for watching! I’d like to say that maybe I just got a lemon. But if you read through the comments below you will see that I’m not the only one. Good luck with yours and I truly hope you don’t have any problems. 👊🏼
Yes they did and we’re going to send me a new controller and thermostat. Only thing is the controller is 6 weeks on back order. Long story short. I took the unit back to Wal mart and got me money back.
Thanks for watching. After being upset,...I took it back to wal mart for a refund. I’ve given up on pellet cookers. Staying true to my old school stick burner ways😎
Thanks for watching! I wound up taking the unit back for a refund shortly after this video was posted. I now have a Green Mountain Grill that is awesome!
Brother James, I’m giving them the opportunity to make it right. After working in a manufacturer’s business I do understand that sometimes stuff happens. It’s the customer service that makes the difference. We will see how long it takes them to react to the problem, and the final resolution to the problem. 😎 But yeah probably my last PB purchase
@Ric’s BBQ & Specialties I got a Boone and a Crockett to go with the 1st generation Series 5 Pitboss, the only problem I've had with the Pitboss is during the cold and wind up here in New England it has a hard time maintaining temps the temp swings are just to big
Hello! Well after this video I contacted Pit Boss again looking for the Control Panel they were supposed to be sending me. I found out it was on back order and I wouldn’t receive it until July! Unacceptable so I took the unit back to Wal Mart and got my money back.
RM * hmmm I believe it needs to totally kool down. I’d try again tomorrow or open the door and put a fan in front of it for 30 minutes or so and try again
Well Mike, I feel your pain. It sucks that you are having these issues. But you and I aren’t the only ones. Pit Boss needs to step up to the plate and recall all these cookers! Thanks for watching my videos and if your inclined to, I’d appreciate you check out some of my better videos on my channel. Thanks and stay safe!
Yes that’s what Pit boss said it was. I returned the unit back to wal mart because the controller was on backorder. I wasn’t going to receive it until mid July. PB Customer Service Sucks
Ric’s BBQ & Specialties That’s too bad...were you really disappointed with their service or just the lack of not having the part in stock to repair your unit? Too bad you couldn’t exchange it with a new one from Walmart. I have the Lowe’s version Pro Series 4, same as the Copperhead, so far so good, it operates perfectly and has proven to do a great job on everything I’ve put in it. I’m New to smokers so nothing to compare with other than my Perfect Flame Grill (awesome by the way) but the materials, build quality and finish all seem very good. So if something does go wrong, I feel the controller would be it and I would need to rely on customer support for help. Anyway, I feel your frustration, sorry you didn’t have a positive experience.
I hate to say, but I believe you. Scroll through the comments below. Your not the only one. Pit Boss needs to step up and take care of this. Thanks for watching and good luck to you.
I'm having the same problem erl codes. This was a waste of money. They sent me out a thermostat but no instructions on how to install it. I do not recommend this unit to anyone save your money.
Hello Thanks for watching. I have the installation instructions in an email. If you send can provide you email I wouldn’t mind sending the to you. Send me your email here or msg me your email on Instagram @ Ricsbbqandspecialties
Ok I have had this issue I think I know the solution. Mine would give Erh and would have wild temp swings and sometimes go out. So far I have smoked twice with with this solution. You have to vacuum out the pot after every use I think this is why the pro series has the clean out You have to
This is my assumption it is really humid in Texas and also sometime use water pots this moisture caused the ash from the pellets to harden in the bottom on not blow out while cooking. Let me know if this helps pain in the pork butt
Hello Mr. Gilmore Thanks for watching and for the comment. I did vacuum the pot and interior of the unit after every cook. Still had the issue. Good luck with yours and I hope it keeps working right for you. 👊🏼
I have the Pitt Boss Copperhead this is my 5th or 6th attempt at smoking, about a month ago I put a Pork Butt and a Brisket in to smoke and previously done a clean job that look almost new, about 4 hrs in as I had ran to the Beer store the wife calls and says the smoker is on fire and the was a loud bang , WTH I told her I'm almost home it will be ok got home got the dern fire out and back to smoking I went cpl hrs later here came the codes ERH and I think it was ERH1 looked in the manual and let it cool down then cranked it back on few min later another freakin fire then the codes finally ever thing kinda leveled out and after a 12 hr cook it all tasted nasty, tuff but hey the dogs ate very well for the next week. Trying it one last time if not Pitt Boss will be hearing from me or Walmart as it seems I did by the extended warranty. Thanks Ric and hope you get your parts interesting on how things will turn out after you do.
Thanks for watching! And please read the comments below, there are a lot of other people having the same issue with this smoker! Pit Boss or as I now call them. Pit Loss needs to have a recall on this unit and give people their hard earned money back. I wound up returning mine to wal mart for a full refund. Good luck Brother
Had the same problem. Folded some aluminum foil and put it in front of the unit thermocouple to keep it out of direct heat from the firebox and used meat probe to read temp at the rack lol. Works for me but I’ll have to try this method out!
Ric’s BBQ & Specialties call customer service- they will actually work with you
@@bordo3k I had been working with PitBoss through email with the same issue. I was promised a replacement controller and temp probe and I have never heard anything else from them and I have never received any parts. I have been working this issue for more than a year.

THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING ANY PIT BOSS SMOKER!
Did it fix your problem?
Ric’s BBQ & Specialties Since replacing the temperature probe have you had any more issues?
Hello Jack. That is exactly what mine was doing only mine started on the 4th cook. I have been using Green Mountain Grills since then with no issues.
Ha! Thanks for the shout out man! :) Sorry to hear you are still having issues man. That ErH code got me scratching my head on what to have you try next...
Yeah I thought it was fixed and just one of those things. But nope it definitely has a bigger problem.
Thanks for watching! Yeah this unit was designed poorly
My manual did not have that information. They must have updated their litterateur. Thanks for watching!
I wouldn’t buy another
This model is junk! Thanks for watching and good luck on your future smokers. I’d highly recommend a Green mountain grill.
Hello Mr. Black
Thanks for watching and I hope you don’t have any issues with yours.
Oh well I’ve got me a GMG now and this unit is pretty good 😎
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for sharing! Got this smoker the beginning of June and nothing but problems!!! I can’t smoke anything without ERH code so disappointed.
Thanks for watching and really sorry to hear your having issues too. Not that it’ll make you feel better but if you read through the comments below. Your not the only one. There may be some tips in the comments that may help you. Do like I did and return it😎
Ric’s BBQ & Specialties returned it and on the hunt for a replacement!
I’m currently experiencing the same problem. I clean it all up water is where it should be also remove all pellets and still having an ERL code . Calling supports .
Good Luck, I don’t know if you’ve read through the comments. Some suggest a few things to try.
Ric’s BBQ & Specialties yeah I did and nothing so end up calling an a controller board is being sent . Now waiting .
Ouch Ric... sorry about the PB. I hope they get it worked out for you. Take care.
Thanks Johnny! 👊🏼
I got mine last weekend. First cook it did same thing to me about 6 times. Emailed them and haven't heard back. Like you said I get it times are tough but no excuse for lack of customer service. Everyone has a email address or laptop to work from home. I'm bringing mine back today unfortunately.
Sorry about that Bro, Yeah PB needs to step up their customer service program
Give them a call
@@juanr861 already returned the piece of shit back to the store.
Good for you . If mine break again I would return it and never again.
Thanks for watching and I’m sorry to hear your having issues. I’ve been using Green Mountain Grills for a year now and have not had one problem
Had same issues, changed thermostat... No issues since, lurched thermostat on Amazon for $12
Thanks for watching and good luck with your future cooks😎
Hey sir saw your video and I’m sorry that sucks! So I’m on a forum with a group of PitBoss Smokers. It seems that there is an updated smoker. Old verticals didn’t have this part that is now on the back wall of the smokers.
Wish I could send a pic as I took one of mine that I just assembled today
Thank you
Sang Lim That part on the back wall is the Temp sensor. PB was supposed to send me one too.
I love it .... so I'm going to clean it check over every thing and try to smoke a pork butt tomarrow and let's hope for the best
jon reynolds Good Luck!
Bro James and I had issues with a different model pt boss last fall. I know my faith in their products has been SHOOK... I hope they make it right bro.
Yeah me too Brother, they better make it right let me tell ya
Has anyone tried moving the control panel to the top of the smoker to avoid the extra heat and drippings?
That’s a question for The Pit Loss company. They definitely have issues with this unit and they know it. This model needs to be recalled.
Thanks for watching Mike. If you have one of these I wish you luck. 😎
@@RicsBBQSpecialties they really should I was on the phone with them almost everyday this week and they refuse to admit the design flaw. It's such a shame. Hopefully I can figure out a way to fix this. I will keep you updated..
Great Content!
Thank you! 👊🏼
@@michaelg6808 well any update?
@@joshkrepps8100 yes! My friend and his father helped me out they moved the control panel to the side very easy they cut the metal for it to mount then they used heat resistant fabric (up to 1000°) to protect the control panel from the heat of the smoker. I've used it about 9 times since and no issues no problem everything is away from the grease tray and I don't have to worry about anything
What a pain now I'm getting second thoughts on buying that Pit Boss smoker. Thanks for sharing .
Lol But yeah you may want to hold off a while
@@paulsq_ thanks I'll keep that in mind much appreciated.
I wouldn’t recommend pit boss period. I bought a 700 series and it had an err from day one. Never worked and I spent 90 minutes on hold and was told how to fix it myself. Still didn’t work. Total garbage company.
@@Chooby56 getting a Recteq instead.
Thanks for watching, I wound up taking it back to Wal mart.
Just let me know.👊
Lol Thanks Bro
Thanks for watching and for the comment. Good Luck with yours and I hope you get. To smoking soon! 👊🏼

Terminal LCpl Thanks for the view and I glad you found a solution! I wound up taking mine back for a refund a week after I posted the video😎
Any answer or fix yet? Was really considering getting me a Pit Boss smoker.
I had the same problem. I emailed support and with the details. They sent me a probe and I've used it about 20 times since.
Glad it’s working for ya!
Ric, by chance do you only have the Pit Boss only on the electrical circuit ? I know with other pellet smokers too many items on the circuit result in fluctuating temps. Hope they get you fixed up right brother!
Up checked and it’s the only thing on that circuit. And yeah I’m giving them the opportunity to make it right.
Sorry to hear the problems your all having, but thanks for making this video I was going to buy one of these, think I'll look elsewhere.
@@RicsBBQSpecialties thank you i have all of those too. any recommendations on one that won't have these problems?
Did you do a follow-up video? I don't see it. Thanks!
Hello Donner. I did not other than the video of the Green Mountain Grill that I got to replace this one. I wound up taking it back for a refund.
ruclips.net/video/YRu_qOkV_do/видео.html
Iv'e done well over 50 cooks with a Pro Series Copperhead, Iv'e never had a code and count myself lucky. Iv'e seen many videos about the problems and have no idea how it's never happend to mine. I have the water pan all the way at the bottom, and the chimmney fairly low, you can just barely see the top of the pipe. I think they have issues with the controllers. I'm going to switch over to a Rec Tech wireless eventually.
Hello John,
Guess you were one of the lucky ones!
Hello Angelo,
Thanks for watching and I totally agree with you. This unit is a piece of junk! Pit Boss needs to recall this thing. Have you tried contacting Pit Boss? Hopefully they can help you with the repairs,
Sorry about the trouble your having with this! Love all your videos tho! Need this ribs bro!

Hello Paul, I appreciate you watching and your comment. I would recommend a Green Mountain Grill. If you go through my videos you will see that after returning the Pit Loss I got the GMG Daniel Boone. This pellet smoker is the real deal.
I have the same problem with the whiskey still wood pellet. Does it run ok now? I just emailed pitboss....

Yes I did. But I had only cooked on it 4 times.
I am just now after 5 years replacing controller and temperature probe. I have also pulled water tray out when error occurred@@RicsBBQSpecialties
Same problem with my pit boss tailgater. Been 3 weeks and still no call back from pit boss. Going to buy a stick burner and scrap the pit boss.

Oh yeah, I’m moving right along. Lol
I had same problem with different brand. The probe was defective. It was reading and sending random temps to controller. I replaced the probe and it fixed the problem.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Glad you got yours fixed.
RIC I believe it's the control board that's the issue hopefully the replacement will be there soon . Deffently a electronic issue it seems .
Yeah I know that’s what it is. But hey I think the temp issue is working better with the pan raised a bit. 😎
@@RicsBBQSpecialties Did they get you some parts to throw at this?

Hello, I wound up taking it back for a refund. I picked up a Green Mountain Grill and haven’t had any issues with it.
@Ric’s BBQ & Specialties I got a Boone and a Crockett to go with the 1st generation Series 5 Pitboss, the only problem I've had with the Pitboss is during the cold and wind up here in New England it has a hard time maintaining temps the temp swings are just to big
That happened to me and it was a faulty temp probe.

Sounds like the controller... Watching with interest, good luck.

Yeah Bro, it is what is. I’m old school anyway😎
Ok I have had this issue I think I know the solution. Mine would give Erh and would have wild temp swings and sometimes go out.
So far I have smoked twice with with this solution. You have to vacuum out the pot after every use I think this is why the pro series has the clean out
You have to
This is my assumption it is really humid in Texas and also sometime use water pots this moisture caused the ash from the pellets to harden in the bottom on not blow out while cooking. Let me know if this helps pain in the pork butt
Hello Mr. Gilmore
Thanks for watching and for the comment. I did vacuum the pot and interior of the unit after every cook. Still had the issue. Good luck with yours and I hope it keeps working right for you.

I know a guy who blows up cilantro I think he can take care of that pit boss for you #CHEABER=NOCODES
Ha! Yeah right Jay!
Good Luck!
