Pitboss markets a cleaner that works quite well. As far as the grates and the grease plate under them I run them through the dishwasher after each cook. I don't bolt the cover for the burn pot back in because I pull it out and vacuum it after every 5/6 cooks. Yes, it needs it that much to prevent fires. If you take a rag with the cleaner on it and wipe the walls down regularly it will be much easier than doing the big teardown like this, especially the top of the smoker and the exhaust tube which fill up with creosote and when it gets hot it will drip back down on your food. Love the videos and I tell everyone to watch you.
Thanks for all you sage wisdom Thomas! You are one of my favorite subs. And THANK YOU! I work hard to build this channel and nothing is more effective than people sharing with their friends. Smoke on brotha!
I've had mine for a few years never cleaned anything on it except the glass with a razor blade and vinegar. After each cook I top off the water pan and leave it on high for an hour, then dump and spray down the water pan with the garden hose. Everything chars up nice and I vacuum it out before the next cook. Heat is a really great cleaning agent, simple and effective.
Hey Zach, My wife bought a new product to clean our glass stove top. She didn't like the way it worked so I thought I would give it a try. Its called Universal Stone. Comes in a 650 ml tub with 2 sponges. It's a semi-hard paste and works incredibly well, especially on thick build-up. Makes my smoker look like new.
I clean my PB smoker every time I use it & it doesn't take much time if you do it every time but be sure to keep your firebox dry. I don't use aluminum foil as it cuts down the airflow of the smoker & makes it work less efficiently, but the drip plate & water pan are granite coated and cleans easy if you do it every time, always take out the racks you don't need when you smoke so that you don't need to clean them, I look at cleaning my smoker as part of the hobby & enjoy cleaning my cherished piece of equipment, & it is a pleasure to use a clean smoker to cook your food in every time you use it.
I picked up a dirty broken smoker for free. 10.00 for parts and a deep clean brought back to life. 1. pressure rinsed it first to remove loose grime. 2. Easy oven. heat to 200F let it soak and reapply a second coat after 15 minutes. scrub with brash brush
Nice. I'm 2 years into using mine. Did the ash clean out you did last week - removing the 4 bolts only. Pitboss should make it clearer what needs to be done with ash-hole cleaning. I was surprised by how much was there. I'll be doing that once a year now. I wont be doing a deep clean yet. Looks great. Looking forward to your next cook!
My man, I can completely empathize with your experience here. I just never expected to have found this much entertainment. In watching another poor sob have to do this as well. You had me in damn tears when you said “I’m glad I’m not a sea turtle”. Idk how I missed the post around the original date but thank god I found it. Keep pumping out the awesome content and thanks for the laughs tonight.
Haha yeah, you are way behind on this one! I got another full chamber cleaning coming up soon. I’m glad you enjoyed my misery! 😂 Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
After you take the door off, just flip the body on it's side and no worries about water/chemical running into the firepot or electronic board area. I also pop my grates in the dishwasher after each smoke and run it on the heavy clean high temp mode. Also an electric pressure washer can do wonders for cleaning a grill or smoker. Just enough power and pin point control
That was funny! I have the same smoker and the same delightful experience ahead of me. Thanks to this video I will try to make it as fun and entertaining as you did!😂

Welcome from New Smyrna Beach beachside. Been an old skool offset smoker for years, primarily venison. Now I'm just smoking Ribs, and chicken. Love the channel.
I clean my smoker after every 2 or 3 uses so not near this bad. I have tried Easy Off BBQ grill cleaner on my vertical smoker. It gets good results but is really strong and nasty to use. Tried other cleaners like simple green HD and ZEP citrus degreaser. The best so far has been Greased Lightning. The grease just melts right off with out all the nasty smell and toxic fumes of the Easy off. The results look just like the smoker door in this video but keep in mind that i don't have many layers of baked on grease.
Looks great! Wife gifted me a Copper head, for my upcoming retirement. I currently have a brisket smoking over night, so far temps are holding. I will follow your tips on the cleaning.
@@TheAmericanSmoke, Just checked the brisket, nice bark and it's set, 6 more degrees and I'll wrap it. as for Facebook, no, I don't Facebook, to much information being sold by them, it's bad enough with Google.
I just cleaned my up right electric smoker with that new Dawn power spray washer . Boom. Came Off like butter . Down fall so many paper towels . Upside no harsh chemical in hale . Try it next time and holla back !! Subscribing now !
The only suggestion I have is don't let oven cleaner sit on the thermometer probe. Best bet is what he says in many videos to clean it each cook. My uncle had to replace his after corrosive cleaner sitting too long on it. Just for anyone reading this that missed you saying it early in the video
I’m glad you appreciate it! It just pisses my wife off most of the time. 😂 haha just kidding. She took the ring and everything that came with it. Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
Thanks for doing a vid on this. I tried the Pitboss degreaser and wasn't happy with it. It worked on the door but not well for inside the chamber. I'll definitely try what you used.
Purple Power degreaser is what I use. Buy the 2 gallon or whatever big jug and get a cheap sprayer from HD or Lowe's. My current set up is gas, so no worries about electronics. Spray it in, close the door while I drink a beer, then open and use the hose on most of it. Grates have to be scrubbed with a stainless scrub pad. Stuff comes right off.

Zach, that had to be one o your funniest videos. OMG I was laughing at how much you were griping about cleaning the smoker. It was fun to watch and I actually learned something. Yeah Don't put your head inside your smoker when spraying Easy-Off LMAO thank you for that lesson. Love ya brother and smoke on!!!
I just did a clean of everything except getting under the smoke chamber plate. I don't have the right kind of screw driver. The front of the chamber really should be a door, so you could take a shovel scooper in there to get stuff out. I'm glad that I didn't pay top dollar for my smoker, or I'd be furious. This is severe enough a design oversight, that I wouldn't recommend anyone buying one of these smokers, this is ridiculous. I am very glad that you've gone through the pain and the trouble of showing this to the rest of us. Fwiw: I figure that you use your smoker 3 or so times more often, than I use mine. I still smoke a lot of stuff, but I doubt the ash in the chamber is as high as yours... yet. I'm so glad I only paid a token amount of money for my smoker, getting the screwdriver and doing this maintenance sort of makes up for the low price I paid. I'm going to find someone to gripe to about this, and see if something can't be done. (fat chance, but I'm ticked!)
I use the Dawn Platinum Plus POWERWASH Plus Free and Clear product. I used it on the glass and the dark film literally started running off without scrubbing. May wanna try it out.
I’ve actually picked up some of that bases on many recommendations just like your. The stuff work really well. Thanks for taking the time to make the suggestion. Smoke on!!!
I clean my smoker every 2 times I smoke meat, I use Dawn Power Wash only it melts the grime away and wipe with paper towels and rinse with plain water on a wet cloth
Hey next time pre-heat your smoker and after it heats to 300 open it up and spray it down, it literally just melts EVERYTHING off!! I heat my smoker up and then blast it with that stuff and it’s just amazing!!!
I like this video. My only concern or more of a question. The oven cleaner. Will this destroy the rubber gasket on the door with many cleans? Or is this safe for the gasket? Thanks for the video. Very much appreciated.
I unfortunately am going to be doing this next weekend. When I took the bottom burn pot cover off it was caked with ash, some of which was crusted in with an obvious grease leak. Thanks for the totorial. While I get everything ordered for cleaning... How many beers did this take? :) Take care
I used super clean from walmart on my farm tractor. It had 40 years of caked grease. I didn't even scrub it much. Then rinsed it off. It was amazing. Supposed to be non toxic to. I've never used the brand you have there for a degreaser. Did it rust?
All I can say young man is shame on you for letting it so bad in the first place. I really appreciated your prior video where you dismantled the bottom to get to the ash pot. Things they don't tell you in the destruction manual. I would think a deep deep clean like that once a year or so would be in order. Did all that ash build up clog up your side and back vents? Are you going to reseason the cabinet? Some really great tips on the whole series you've done on this, from discovery to finish. I may not have the WiFi digital controller in my Copperheads 3 & 5 but, they are a heck of a lot easier to clean and maintain. Oh, one more detail, Take your smoke stack off and clean the inside. A clean smoker operates an performs much better therefore produces a better product. Do a season and burn off to remove any chemical residue. You did a great set of videos on this subject.
I recommend not using easy off. Easy off strips powdercoat off of metal like it’s a light layer of dust. I’m not sure if the BBQ/Oven version is the same…but I suspect it is. It’s what OFF does.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve never heard of it. Thanks for watching. Come over to American Smoke Carnivores on Facebook. You can share some time and maybe gets some tips there. Smoke on!!!
When I do a deep clean I like to flip the smoker upside down with the smoke stack off and clean the fan blade off and pull out the Auger so leftovers pellets won't sit and the burn pot I stuff a bunch of paper towels down it and pull it out when I'm done. I got three years before I had to buy new fans, Heating element, and temperature element and inner pot and Auger rod cause it started acting up Temperature was jumping up and down and wouldn't hold temperature even in the summertime but my pitboss vertical five smoker still kicking I just Imagine what's behind that stainless are Aluminum wall Some of the spray sept into the walls And gets behind it so I'm in wheelchair and trying to do my best wonder how much work it would take to get it apart and back together 😅
Would you recommend the competition series over this model? Saw you made the joke at 19:40 and I’ve been between the two models for a couple weeks now trying to make a decision. Thanks man!
Both units get good and bad reviews. I’ve not personally had experience with the competition series so I can’t give first hand feedback. You’re welcome to come over to my Facebook group and probe the members. American Smoke Carnivores. Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
@TheAmericanSmoke I'll look mine over carefully, see if it's even possible. The amount of grease you took off and towels you used, it's almost better to power wash it, but obviously we don't want to ruin it for sure.
No doubt about it. Use your meat probe and don’t pull it until the internal temp, at the thickest portion, is over 203. Let it rest for at least an hour, you’ll have a successful first cook. No doubt about it. Smoke on!!!
@TheAmericanSmoke , that's actually what I was thinking, I'm getting ready to put in a new igniter so I'd thought I'd do a good cleaning on it, Thank you
@TheAmericanSmoke seems like there'd be a market then for a rubber sealed metal plug to fit that element hole. Then you could spray your heart out. I have a mill and a grinder in my workshop, I may gin one up. 😋
Great question! It’s mainly due to my lack of ownership of a pressure washer. I’m currently looking for one. I’m about to paint my house so I’ll need one for that. But, I’ll definitely be pressure washing the components from there on out. Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
Hey Sir, I just recently bought a Pit Boss from a guy I work with. He had it for at least two years and I haven't used it yet. It looks like yours. I did manage to vacuum the burn pit out and cleaned off the grates and the water pan. My question is, how long do these smokers last? 2 years, 4 years, 10 years, 20 years? I only paid $80 for it and am very excited to have it. I just want to make sure that it is still in good enough shape to last me another 8 years or longer.
I wanted to ask - Have you ever considered getting an aftermarket door seal gasket? I have the same smoker and I find that there is quite a bit of smoke leakage out of some gaps in the gasket. Just wondering your thoughts :) Love the channel.
I’ve not had a lot of issues with that. A lot of people do though. I have some new door latches that I intend to install on a video not long from now. Amazon has a lot of high heat gaskets. amzn.to/3YYFWjl This should get the job done. Smoke on!!!
I wonder if you could plug that hole up with somethin so it prevents a lot of water from getting down there that way I could spray some chemicals and then hit it with my pressure washer… 🤔
Well i bought one last week and it damn near caught my RV on fire when the grease from the ribs caught fire internally . Its going to kill someone or burn a house down some day . If i wasn't around i would have lost it all .
@@TheAmericanSmoke i wrapped a towel around the stack till the flames got real small and opened the door to put it out , because it wouldnt go out on its own . It would just keep burning
@@TheAmericanSmoke it would have burned my RV to the ground so i had to do something so i wrapped a towel around the stack till the flames got real small and opened the door to put it out , because it wouldnt go out on its own . It would just keep burning
First unbridled door for the latche so what do they send you a dented door as if you weren't a hard working paying customer & rather than a door the 1st time sent a hige , they knew the door was dented the box was retaped 7 calls , sad $700 plus
I use dawn's dishes Soap?. On a upright pitboss with the double doors. I'm not keen on using oven cleaner. I know it's meant for the oven, but I'm not willing to put that in a smoker. If dawn's dish soap, you can use on animals to clean them so if you can use it on animals. I don't see why you can't use it in a smoker.
I had to do it to my pit. Bull's didn't want to. I used it for probably 2 years pretty hard. That it's sad for about 2 years. I had to do it once to my trigger. I had to lay it down to transport it to my new place. The Ashes got all over everything on the inside. So needless to say. I didn't know how much the petina on the inside of the pet matter with cooking.
I’ve had people tell me they use dawn. Dawn is what’s in the hot soapy water that I wipe down with at the end. I feel like much much more scraping is going to be required if Dawn is your only degreaser.
Uuuummmmm… with videoing, 3. 1-2 just working. Mainly because of the disassembly and reassembly. Don’t ever let me hit the lottery! I’ll give one away every time it gets dirty! 😂 Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!

I'm going to find someone to gripe to about this, and see if something can't be done. (fat chance, but I'm ticked!)
Gripe away my friend! We feel your pain. Good news is, life is good! Smoke on and God Bless
Lol, that "drip tray with all the foil on it , actually has airflow to let the steam from the water pan in. You covered them
I cut the foil to allow air through the vents.
The grates fit in my dishwasher.. I also put my smoke tubes in the dishwasher
Smoke on!!!
I have the same smoker, best cleaner I have found is just dawn dish soap and water.
Dawn is always a solid choice. A lot of people say the Dawn Powerwash is the truth. I haven’t tried it yet though.
Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
I clean my smoker every 2 times I smoke meat, I use Dawn Power Wash only it melts the grime away and wipe with paper towels and rinse with plain water on a wet cloth
I got to get me some. Thanks for watching!
Hey next time pre-heat your smoker and after it heats to 300 open it up and spray it down, it literally just melts EVERYTHING off!! I heat my smoker up and then blast it with that stuff and it’s just amazing!!!
Excellent! Smoke on!!!
You can put the chrome racks in a plastic bin and fill it with water and liquid draino and clean them just letting them soak.
Interesting! Not on the ceramic coated racks though? Right?
I like this video. My only concern or more of a question. The oven cleaner. Will this destroy the rubber gasket on the door with many cleans? Or is this safe for the gasket? Thanks for the video. Very much appreciated.
The cleaner I used is for ovens and grills. Not sure if it’s made to be easy on gaskets but I’ve never had any problems.
I unfortunately am going to be doing this next weekend. When I took the bottom burn pot cover off it was caked with ash, some of which was crusted in with an obvious grease leak. Thanks for the totorial. While I get everything ordered for cleaning... How many beers did this take? :) Take care
It takes…. As many as it takes. 😂 may the force be with you!
I used super clean from walmart on my farm tractor. It had 40 years of caked grease. I didn't even scrub it much. Then rinsed it off. It was amazing. Supposed to be non toxic to. I've never used the brand you have there for a degreaser. Did it rust?
I’ve had not rust.
pit boss very good
Dawn Powerwash works great
That seems to be a commonly held opinion. I’ll have to put some on my grocery list
The burn off and reseasoning video is already being edited. Stay tuned!
Thanks for watching and for the input.
Smoke on!
@@TheAmericanSmoke Pig shots and scalloped potatoes in my Camp Chef today. have a good one.
I’ve got a few things going today. I’m probably making my take on shotgun shells today
We use baking soda and vinegar. Just take the door and loose parts in the tub
I’ve heard that from others. Thanks for the suggestion! Smoke on!!!
Great and entertaining video
Thanks for watching! Merry Christmas!!!
@@TheAmericanSmoke MERRY CHRISTMAS. Waiting for this smoker to become available again here in SE Virginia.
I recommend not using easy off. Easy off strips powdercoat off of metal like it’s a light layer of dust. I’m not sure if the BBQ/Oven version is the same…but I suspect it is. It’s what OFF does.
Yeah , next time I’m going with something new
That stuff definitely cleans your lungs out while you clean the smoker
Definitely! It did a good job though. To bad It almost killed me. 😂
Thanks for watching!
Sunburst makes a smoke house degreaser cleaner might be worth a look at.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve never heard of it.
Thanks for watching. Come over to American Smoke Carnivores on Facebook. You can share some time and maybe gets some tips there.
Smoke on!!!
Use a long handle brush it’s alotof help too.
That’s solid advice for anyone still planning to clean their unit! 👆
Man I love the idea of flipping it upside down. I've never considered it. Thanks for watching. Smoke on!!!
Make Your Smoker Clean Again
FYI... The part you are referring to as a drop tray is actually the heat diffuser.
Thanks for watching! Great info. Smoke on!!!
I’m curious if there’s any negative effect from covering the drip tray with foil?
The only negative, to my knowledge, would be if you didn’t cut out for the vents. That would change the dynamics of air flow in the chamber a bit.
Smoke on!!!
I just use soap and water every smoke if it’s a brisket and every 2 if it’s not as fatty. Use aluminum pans to catch my grease.
That’s a great proactive way of keeping your pit nice and clean. Very disciplined. Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
Makes me want to take a pressure washer to it lol. Or attach a scrub pad to my drill.
That scrub brush is not a bad idea at all! I’ve heard of people ruing this unit with a pressure washer though. You do you though! 😂
Smoke on!
No man no chemical easy off in the smoker geeze
It’s made for ovens and grills. I performed a burn off afterwards.

Can you power wash it if you cover the electronics? Maybe set it on its side and use masking tap to cover the burn hole?
I’ve not been brave enough to try it. I saw another person say they did it and ruined it. I don’t know if they took precautions or not though.
@TheAmericanSmoke I'll look mine over carefully, see if it's even possible. The amount of grease you took off and towels you used, it's almost better to power wash it, but obviously we don't want to ruin it for sure.
It’s not a huge job to remove the control panel. I’m not sure about the auger motor. Probably less work than I did in this video! 😂
How do you change the fuse, say if you, like I did, blew the damn fuse by not following the directions?
I’m going to be honest, I don’t know what fuse you’re talking about.
My wife ordered this for me. What's the best first thing to smoke with a new piece of equipment? And, first time smoker
Pork butt
No doubt about it. Use your meat probe and don’t pull it until the internal temp, at the thickest portion, is over 203. Let it rest for at least an hour, you’ll have a successful first cook. No doubt about it.
Smoke on!!!
Ok, i think i already know the answer, but, after you spray the cleaner inside of the smoker, can spray the hose in it to clean it out?
I wouldn’t advise it. You have a lot of electronics that can be exposed to moisture from the inside. Proceed with caution
It’s not just that, it’s all the vents in the sides that allow air flow from the burn pot
Why nor use a pressure washer to clean the pieces like the racks and grease pan
Great question! It’s mainly due to my lack of ownership of a pressure washer. I’m currently looking for one. I’m about to paint my house so I’ll need one for that. But, I’ll definitely be pressure washing the components from there on out.
Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
Dawns power wash
I need to save this video can you make it saveable please? Great content!!!!
There are no restrictions on this video that I know of.
Will a dirty smoker effect the taste?
Only if stuff is falling off onto the food, or if it’s blocked up and the air flow is restricted.
@@TheAmericanSmoke thanks
Anytime. Smoke on!!!
Best thing to use with out chemicals on your food is vinegar baking soda and salt
That’s solid advice and always a safe bet. Thanks for watching and Smoke on!!!
Can you run that thing up under the patio?
I do. Proceed at your own risk
Nice video. 👍 do they make a thermal blanket for this vertical smoker for outdoors smoking in cold climate?
I'm not sure about that one. I know people use welding blankets or some use moving blankets. I hear they are cheap at harbor freight.
@@TheAmericanSmoke that's what I was thinking also to use, thanks 👍
I have been using the welding blanket from harbor freight. Worked well smoking a prime rib roast when it was 7, -8 with wind chill.
I'm in NC. I use mine spring summer, winter, and fall, rain, snow, or shine, and don't need blankets.
Awesome is a lot less toxic and you use paper towels and I’ve had no problems with rubber seals!
Fo sho! Check this out
ruclips.net/video/fEvQSe6Gb4w/видео.html
I just use warm water and a drill brush
Also duct tape the whole. Lol
If you caint duck it… 😂
Baking soda my friend.
Word
If I had that big tote, I would have filled it with hot water and dishwasher detergent to soak. The ultimate corrosive .
Great idea! I’ve got a big cleaning coming up. I’m shopping for an electric pressure washer.
New subscriber maybe u could flip it over and then you wouldn't have to worry so much about water getting into the bottom cuz it would be on top
Interesting 🤔
The buildup on the walls!!!! They call that patina.
My petina had become paterible! 😂
It's not lemon, it's lye.
Such a good cleaner, and drain opener.
Definitely gets the job done! Thanks for watching!
They come with a 5 year warranty. That’s about as close as I can get you. Everything else comes down to maintenance quality and luck
Amazon has a lot of high heat gaskets. amzn.to/3YYFWjl
This should get the job done.
Smoke on!!!
I wonder if you could plug that hole up with somethin so it prevents a lot of water from getting down there that way I could spray some chemicals and then hit it with my pressure washer… 🤔
Not sure. Proceed with caution
Well i bought one last week and it damn near caught my RV on fire when the grease from the ribs caught fire internally . Its going to kill someone or burn a house down some day . If i wasn't around i would have lost it all .
Sorry to hear that. How did the fire escape the chamber?
@@TheAmericanSmoke i wrapped a towel around the stack till the flames got real small and opened the door to put it out , because it wouldnt go out on its own . It would just keep burning
Typically, the fire is not going to escape the chamber with the door closed. Sounds like you handled it properly.
Who have you been speaking with? Lowe’s or Pit Boss?
I use dawn's dishes Soap?. On a upright pitboss with the double doors. I'm not keen on using oven cleaner. I know it's meant for the oven, but I'm not willing to put that in a smoker. If dawn's dish soap, you can use on animals to clean them so if you can use it on animals. I don't see why you can't use it in a smoker.
You’re not gonna hurt anything with some dawn. You remember they always washed those little oil spill ducks with it! 😅
@@TheAmericanSmoke yea I do
I usually do my final wipe down with warm water and dawn
I had to do it to my pit. Bull's didn't want to. I used it for probably 2 years pretty hard. That it's sad for about 2 years. I had to do it once to my trigger. I had to lay it down to transport it to my new place. The Ashes got all over everything on the inside. So needless to say.
I didn't know how much the petina on the inside of the pet matter with cooking.
I'd use awesome... can fill that tub up with water... add awesome and let it really soak. Easy off is so full of chemicals....
Sorry guy's steam cleaning only, don't want chemicals in my walls
Right on! Thanks for watching!!!
How about usung dawn
I’ve had people tell me they use dawn. Dawn is what’s in the hot soapy water that I wipe down with at the end.
I feel like much much more scraping is going to be required if Dawn is your only degreaser.
Wear a respirator 😂
Looks easier to just buy another one !!! Lol kidding to expensive . Great job . Sure that took over 3 to 4 hours maybe !? 😢
Uuuummmmm… with videoing, 3. 1-2 just working. Mainly because of the disassembly and reassembly.
Don’t ever let me hit the lottery! I’ll give one away every time it gets dirty! 😂
Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
Hard telling what that spray do to the lung
Yeah, for sure. Definitely strong stuff
@@TheAmericanSmoke dude this video just drones on. The first 4 min is just rambling. You pick it up and it's entertaining but not well explained as you do it!
Thanks for the feedback. Smoke on!
Is there anything you were unclear about that I can explain more fully?
For the record this video did indeed help me for the future so I don’t know what the deal i saw nothing wrong even though smoke didn’t explain everything it doesn’t take a rocket scientist 👩🔬 to figure it out besides its just 4 screws to take out no big deal I’ve taken mine out after this video to check it keep em coming brother smoke on 👍👍👍👍
I want to hit mine with the hot water pressure washer
You do you. I would not advise it though. I’ve had more than one person tell me that doing that got water into the electrical system and ruined the smoker.
I so don't look forward to doing this 🤣
It’s not fun. I don’t want to end up being on of those videos online where someone’s smoker is a blazing inferno! Those are fun to watch, as long as it’s not your smoker burning.
Thanks for watching and Smoke on!
If I win the lottery I'll be so lazy someone can wipe my butt, just like kings had done to them in the past.
Spend that money!
