      Felix I believe if your set that goal to try to mimic movie quality effects and you push yourself you can absolutely do it. Every single person involved in these movies started somewhere and if they can do it YOU can do it. I'm happy to help push you if you're willing to try. Thank you for the kind comment but I want to see you next posting your movie work - so let's do it! 👊

    Thanks Alan! this was so informative, and I have so many ideas about ways of using this. Could you recommend where to look more into camera tracking with lidar scan data?

    • @AllanMcKay
      @AllanMcKay  5 лет назад +2

      I honestly haven't seen any courses that covered lidar which always annoyed me because I had to fork out $30,000 for a scanner not having any real proof it would make life easier. But it's pretty straight forward. I had been creating a course on camera tracking which covers this but it's on pause right now. Too many things in the works. I would say though that rather than LIDAR you can also look at photogrametry. It's not as accurate but it's another solution

    • @ConradSly
      @ConradSly 5 лет назад

      Allan McKay yeah I’m pretty familiar with photogrammetry, and i think it could work. I hope you return to the idea of doing a camera tracking course, but at least for now thanks to you, it’s on my radar!

    Amazing work! To tie this all together could you do a tutorial on super hero vfx CAPE shots. Like for Man of Steel or from Doctor Strange where hes flying or twirling it around his body in the first movie. This has always stumped me and I'd love to learn about the industry way of going about this! Is it pinned to a piece of geometry or do you model the actor out? There's nothing on youtube! Thanks!

    • @AllanMcKay
      @AllanMcKay  5 лет назад

      On Superman returns we just had to people in green flapping his cape with a fan blowing a lot of the time - it wasn't anything special. Man of steel I didn't pay much attention to but I would assume they stepped it up a bit. Cloth with is just a lot of setting up the right conditions and controls to keep everything behaving how you want but ultimately there's always a lot of cheating and blending different sims if you need to get a specific performance.
      Dr strange was from my understanding a mixture of character rigging and cloth - I really like what they did. I've never personally animated a cape - there was a talk at IAMAG 2019 in Paris with the VFX supervisor for framestore that was pretty interesting talking about a lot of this stuff

    Can we make the same kind of quality with Red Giant Particular in After Effects?

    • @AllanMcKay
      @AllanMcKay  5 лет назад +2

      I'm actually interviewing the CEO of red Giant on my podcast it might be a fun listen. I linked in the description to a friends Tutorial on how to do this in after effects if you want to take a look. The advantage of this is it's 3D so we can use that information to light the shot and do so much more with it. But I'm still impressed with some of the examples people have made just with after effects

    • @-CQ
      @-CQ 5 лет назад +1

      @@AllanMcKay You're right but we don't have that kind of render farms which is in the film industry, That's why After Effects is good to render fast on average computer.
      Waiting for that Podcast.

    • @AllanMcKay
      @AllanMcKay  5 лет назад

      @@-CQ at home I have 5 nodes which is plenty. I do suggest if you are working in FX to have at least 2 computers. Anytime you're doing simulation work 2 computers is critical. So you can work on one and let the other one do its thing. But I agree 2D solutions when you can get away with it are much faster

      People overestimate needed computer power these last few years. You can render a lots of cool effect in scanline render, for example. Then again, remember Jurassic Park movie? From 1994. It was rendered on the computers that combined power is much much less, then on your mobile phone, yet it looks amazing.
      Often people blaming lack of farms for their poor knowledge on how to optimize scenes.

    Allan can you explain how lidar helps with tracking? you mean like geometry tracking?

    • @AllanMcKay
      @AllanMcKay  5 лет назад +3

      Basically a camera has to solve and guess 3D tracking based on 2D images. So it's purely guess work. Having a 3d accurate model of the environment you are capturing means it really just needs to snap the camera into place. It makes the solves completely accurate and only takes about 5-10 points too get a solve even of the most complex moves. So tracking takes an hour rather than days
