Photographing the Horsehead Nebula and Crab Nebula Together!

  • January kick starts the year for astrophotography. There are so many incredible targets in the winter, and for my first night of 2024, we photograph the Horsehead Nebula in Orion, and the Crab Nebula in Taurus. Using two different telescopes, my Celestron 9.25 and the ZWO SeeStar S50, we utilize both for their potential and capture the beauty of then night sky, even if it’s from heavy light pollution.
    The Horsehead Nebula is a favorite in the astrophotography world. It’s rich in hydrogen gas which glows red on cameras when you photograph these wonderful target. The horse head itself is a dark nebula that outlines the famous structure. It’s a fairly easy target to capture with narrowband filters, but visually it’s almost impossible to see, even with larger telescopes.
    The Crab Nebula is a supernova remnant. It appears as a fuzz in most telescopes visually, but photographically it reveals all kinds of veins of structure that show an outburst of energy and matter. It’s a colorful target and utilizing narrowband filters can help bring out color and more structure.

    Great video. That’s a great graphic you have on your C 9.25. Is that an automotive style wrap? I have the same scope with the hyperstar as well. I have a RASA 8 and a 8” Edge HD also with hyperstar. Kinda redundant but fun nonetheless. Great video and great image through that 9.25!

    A little precision : the fact of having a smaller sensor don’t increse the « zoom ». You’ll just have a smaller field of view, cause the smaller sensor will crop your field of view. So you don’t gonna have more details. If you want more details, you need to increse the FOCAL LENGTH. The increse of the diameter of your OTA can also bring those details. So having a smaller sensor just make you unable to use a part of your field of view. Maybe on small targets we do not care about loosing this field of view, but with Orion or Andromeda… :/

      Correct! Having several camera options is also beneficial to achieve different framing you desire of your targets.

    I noticed you have your am5 directly mounted to what looks like a slywatcher tripod, how did you do this and can you make a video on it?
