I love your videos like this. I started collecting the 1974 capital publishing set by watching your videos. Just a fantastic set that is. Some of them are pretty rare, but I just love that set. I just went back and started watching some of your old videos and really enjoying it. What a damn collection you have!!
Seeing this 3 years after you created this video. Watched you on another show and wanted to give your channel a try. Just recently began my vintage journey. Excellent information, easy to follow - subscribed!
Hey man. Really been getting into your content. I collected as a kid from mid 80s to mid 90s. Kinda faded out but got back into it a few years ago. I always absolutely loved vintage. When I got back in thats what I really wanted. So I've been chasing that. It sucks how crazy the prices have got. Love the video.
I agree with you on the Topps giant cards and the Kellogg's in Hostess cards I've got quite a few they're very affordable still and they're just really great looking cards specially that Roberto Clemente beautiful like your videos
1983 set is going up not going to lie growing up in Baltimore Cal was my sports hero I just got his 83 Topps in psa 10 can’t afford his rookie but I’m so happy to own his 83
Great information! I’d love to know what kind of cases you buy to display your cards on the wall? Also, is there risk of cards fading from being displayed in a lighted room?
I've also found that grading companies use the half grades as “eye appeal enhancers". Makes sense that you have a lot of half grades in your collection!
Really enjoyed the video. As someone that has built his vintage collection a card at a time on a fairly limited budget I appreciate the value that I get from collecting lower condition and nontraditional sizes and format items.
Excellent quote. Totally true. So many people talk shit about baseball cards until you tell the you have a $5K card....then you have their attention. But all of us real collectors know it's more about the hunt, completing a set, getting everything of your favorite player/team, etc. Great video bro.
Buying based on looks is great advice. Buy the card, not the case. For me personally, if a vintage card has tight corners that aren't "fuzzy" or frayed, it is the most important thing to me. Some people are sticklers about centering, but I am not so much. It is all a matter of preference really.
That Joe Namath is very beautiful? some of those cards have bad corners where kids put rubber bands around them if a card is a 3.5 there must be some bad corners wearing down the side Baseball cards didn't become a business until about 1981 or so , so if a card came from 1959 1957 they had to put them somewhere there were no sheets and binders, hard plastics people had there hands on them they ended up in shoe boxes? I hear what your saying about the grading numbers though? beautiful Clemente? I have hosteses cards but there from 1988 Boggs, Mattingly Henderson, Gooden , Strawberry , Raines Viola players of that time period?
@@MrJmangini so when you leave your house under better terms say February ley's say your going to Models , champs, Walmart , the mall out to the movies, pizza places, sit down restaurant's do you carry any cards in your coat pocket? 2 are you doing the national or attending the National this year July 31st, Aug 1st and 2nd it's in Atlantic City? 3. what are your favorite years of cards not what people collect but what are your favorite years , what are your favorite years of the 70's? 4. you mentioned in the video and showed us the hostes cards do you have any Burger king cards if so which players and do you have a video showing post cerals and Burger king cards?
John, just got back into collecting and leaning towards Vintage Baseball. Obviously, I'm on a budget like everyone else. What is the context that vintage collectors see in the specific graded cards? For example for modern cards, the PSA 10 is the gold standard. But most collectors are forced to goto a PSA 8 or 9 simply because affordability. For vintage, the curve is obviously different because PSA 9 and 10 are super rare and super expensive. Would you say that a PSA 8 vintage card is comparable to a PSA 10 modern card? So that means that the average vintage collector is probably buying PSA 5,6,7? Just trying to get a gauge of how collectors see each grade?
Vintage is more about the actual card, especially rare cards, and the eye appeal really. For instance most T206’s will tap out around a 5 which is a high grade for those. Anything above that I find suspect because they didn’t come out of the pack in 8’s or 9’s. Personally I find it ridiculous that grading companies treat 2021 cards and 1909 cards the same. And find grading new cards a total waste of money. But that’s just me.
@@MrJmangini Thanks for the response as I agree in many respects. Getting back into the hobby (the last time I collected grading wasn’t mainstream), I was suprised at how the grading system was used. I always looked at grading as more for authenticity rather than a specific price point. I see people getting all these modern cards graded and realize it’s just to flip them so it’s really not about collecting. Grading should be about your holy grail cards and shouldn’t have this specific number scale. They just assigned the card mint, very good, average and poor and let the buyers/sellers dictate the market. I see PSA 9’s and 10’s and honestly can’t tell the difference in many instances. I’ll be honest I saw a UD Griffey PSA 10 that was alittle off centered and rolled my eyes as that is not a Gem Mint card! This obsession regarding PSA 10 cards has pushed the prices of everything up when I contend the PSA 10 cards are overvalued.
That’s exactly right. Collectors can’t tell the difference between 9’s and 10’s. The price between the 2 is ridiculous. I saw a half grade being 60k more in a recent auction.
I am a seasoned coin collector who has recently branched out to vintage baseball. Your video is very encouraging and informative. Thank you! I have subscribed and will check out some of your other videos. :)
I’ve been collecting almost 30 years and it’s always refreshing to learn some new things....from one nerd to another...love the content....til next time !!!
Thanks for the info. I’ve only collected Modern thus far but looking to get into vintage and this video definitely helped me get started. I enjoy the 1964 Topps giant set.
John, great video. I agree with everything you said. The vintage game cards are great value. I would include the t205 set. They tend to be less expensive than the t206 cards. Easier to complete too. Any new vintage collector needs to watch this video.
Great video...thanks for taking the time and sharing information. For cards that you believe look great (like the Roy card you showed), do you ever resubmit it to the same grader or different?
Great information in the great introductory video for people looking to collect vintage and ways to get into it on a more reasonably priced way. By the way I love all your Oddball cards!😉😉

Welcome!
I love the Topps Giants card set. Proud owner of the set. Amazing photos of the players and easy to look at as my eyes age😅
Great video. Working on my collection.
Thanks.

Gorgeous Wilson Campanella. Woof.
Great video 👍👍

They are Penzoni cases. Haven’t gotten them in a while but they make several different sizes for both graded and non graded. They are great.
Good point on manufactured rarity. Always a topic of conversation

I thought I was the only person who prefers sharper cards over better centered but more worn cards. It's good to know I am not alone. :)
John, good content lately. Appreciate you sharing your perspectives and thoughts on the hobby.
Thanks
Great perspective John.

Nice. Thanks for the razor blade trick. I hate what those penny sleeves do to my cards. Hell on black boarders. Going to try that out.
LVegas Cards it works well.
Awesome! Thank you for this. Looks like Charlie Sheen is selling off a few of his memorabilia/cards on Lelands!
Great video John. I love the odd ball cards. Thanks again for sharing.
Great video! Good advice, with a lot of beautiful cards as well.
Excellent video John!

No I don’t. I send very few cards in for grading.

The 1961 Golden Press is one of my all time favorite sets.
