@@MrPaulsPantry It turned out beautifully, Mr. Paul! Fits perfectly in a 1-cup canning jar. Total cooking time from boiling to honey golden was about 45 minutes. My electric stove’s low must be a little bit lower than your gas stove’s low, so I had to turn it up a bit to match the degree of boiling in your video. i used to live in Tenerife, and your right its very hard to get some uk products, until Iceland opened a supermarket. and the spanish couldnt make a decent pie to save their lives,
Sadly the Spanish don't eat pies, years ago even their Empanadas were fried not baked. When I first came to Spain all those years ago my wife and I were the only people in the village with an oven, everery thing was cooked on the stove top.
It hadn't even occurred to me that you could make your own golden syrup. I'm a bit of a sucker for buying the Tate and Lyle one though just so I can have one those great tins in the cupboard. I love the design of the tin as it's so traditional. I like some golden syrup on bread and also like it in porridge as well as putting it in cakes of course. My Nan was a lover of having Black Treacle on bread but I couldn't do that lol.
Hi Sugar Puff, I don't if you're aware of this: The Guinness Book of Records has named Lyle's Golden Syrup the oldest brand in Britain. Its green packaging has been decorated with the image of a golden lion and bees since 1885. You obviously have good taste both for the product and the package. Thanks for watching. @@MrPaulsPantry I think I might have read that before but thank you for refreshing my memory. You keep safe and well too and thank you for the great videos x
Great video - for years I used to search out Lyle's Golden Syrup in France (ridiculously expensive !) but it became more and more scarce and then Brexit killed the supply stone dead. I was brought up using Golden syrup in baking so this is very welcome information and I can once again make all the things I used to.
I always wondered how it was made, and the difference between that and treacle so thank you for showing me. Have you got a really nice recipe for a good ginger cake using golden syrup and or without treacle, i have one that uses both but it’s nice but i recon you might have a better one. One interesting point about availability - in many countries there is an invert sugar syrup, but it isn't available on the retail market. Bakers and and patiseries buy it from wholesale suppliers.
70 yo Texan here and I've never seen the recommendation to substitute corn syrup for golden syrup. You can of course but it's just a different taste. Since the zeitgeist has made them manufacture corn syrup as a 100% glucose syrup (no fructose to keep market sales) it's considerably less sweet than Golden and the corn syrup of my youth. I simply make my own Golden Syrup mostly because while there are stores in my city that sell it, it is obscenely expensive for what it is. You haven't lived until you've tased a cheesecake made substituting half the sucrose with golden syrup (add an extra 30 gm of corn starch as well and cook it lower and longer to account for the extra liquid.)
Thank you, I now live in the Philippines and there is no golden sryup to be found. Now (thanks to you) I can enjoy it once again. One small point, although you say there is no need for a thermometer I found one to really helpful (yep, I am not an expert cook). Your approach is perfect for me, thank you and yummy to my tummy.
NO, if it was Ok to use the juice I would have put that in the recipe. Most of the flavour is in the lemon oil and that's in the skin. Just fish it out afterwards.
I wonder if this could be made with Coconut Sugar ? White sugar plays havoc with my Arthritis, just think, I could have upside-down cake and flapjacks again !!
In South Africa, we also have the British brand named Lyles syrup, but it has become too expensive, and as South Africans always do ...... make a plan ...... by making our very own, and naming it Illovo golden syrup. Honestly, I really, really can't taste the difference between Lyles and Illovo, really. Illovo is a small town on the Natal south coast in South Africa where sugar cane is grown. No problem finding Golden Syrup in Australia. I can think of two companies that make it here. I use it for making microwave golden syrup dumplings. They are goooooooooooood
Thank you for watching Maree and for taking the time to comment, I do appreciate that. For more of my recipes go to my website at : mr-pauls-pantry.com/
Just made some of this, perfect result but it took just over 30 mins to reach the correct golden colour.
Hi Roger, sometimes I cheat and caramelise a small amount of the sugar first to get the colour then add the rest of the sugar.
Looking forward for recipes to use golden syrup
Hi Lucia, thanks for watching, I have a couple just posted on my website at this link: mr-pauls-pantry.com/
i used to live in Tenerife, and your right its very hard to get some uk products, until Iceland opened a supermarket. and the spanish couldnt make a decent pie to save their lives,
Sadly the Spanish don't eat pies, years ago even their Empanadas were fried not baked. When I first came to Spain all those years ago my wife and I were the only people in the village with an oven, everery thing was cooked on the stove top.
Want the use this to make homemade marshmallows and wonder how much the lemon improves the flavor, have to admit I’d like to overdo it!
Give it a try and let us know how it goes.
Hi Sugar Puff,
I don't if you're aware of this: The Guinness Book of Records has named Lyle's Golden Syrup the oldest brand in Britain. Its green packaging has been decorated with the image of a golden lion and bees since 1885. You obviously have good taste both for the product and the package. Thanks for watching. Stay safe and keep well.
@@MrPaulsPantry I think I might have read that before but thank you for refreshing my memory. You keep safe and well too and thank you for the great videos x
Thankfully, Illovo (South African sugar producers) make syrup. We used to get Lyle’s but not anymore.

I wonder if your thermometer has a mark for the 'hard crack' stage?
Wonderful thank you for sharing this 👌🇿🇦 😜 does it taste like Lyles 🤤 best ever.
Great video - for years I used to search out Lyle's Golden Syrup in France (ridiculously expensive !) but it became more and more scarce and then Brexit killed the supply stone dead. I was brought up using Golden syrup in baking so this is very welcome information and I can once again make all the things I used to.
I'm glad you found it useful. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and thanks for watching.
I always wondered how it was made, and the difference between that and treacle so thank you for showing me. Have you got a really nice recipe for a good ginger cake using golden syrup and or without treacle, i have one that uses both but it’s nice but i recon you might have a better one. Or even biscuits, the only biscuit recipe i have that uses golden syrup is Anzac biscuits and being a pommy I love golden syrup. Hope your ok over there and your safe and well, god bless from Western Australia 🙏🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰👏👏👏👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Hi Chris,
I have some recipes using Golden Syrup lined up. I'll check through my old papers for the cake you mention. The dogs and I are keeping well but still in strict lockdown, not allowed to my next village just a 4 minute drive away. We also send our blessing and good wishes from Sunny Spain. 😃😃💖
@@MrPaulsPantry thank you for looking for me 🥰🥰
~ We Marathi Bramhan community call it ' Sudharas ' : it tastes beautiful because of lemon juice in it : kids like to eat it with flat bread ...

~ Sure , sir ... Thank you for the link ! ...
Just looked on Amazon - can get Lyle's here in US.
One interesting point about availability - in many countries there is an invert sugar syrup, but it isn't available on the retail market. Bakers and and patiseries buy it from wholesale suppliers.
That's exactñy why I made this video, so everyone has access to a good alternative.
What is the purpose of the one tablespoon of water?
Do you think using demerara sugar instead would give good results?
No, it's far too dark
@@MrPaulsPantry what if you don't mind the colour?
It will look like molasses and have its own certain flavor.
How to treacle???
All shops in South Africa has golden syrup
Thank you. I tried but when it cooled down it became as solid as glass. What have I done wrong?
You boiled far too long
Ah ok. Thank you. Can I retrieve it? Or shall I throw it away with the jar and start again?
@@jacquesdemolay2264 You won't be able to retrieve I'm afraid.
Which recipes require golden syrup?
Check on Google
Thank you, I now live in the Philippines and there is no golden sryup to be found. Now (thanks to you) I can enjoy it once again.
One small point, although you say there is no need for a thermometer I found one to really helpful (yep, I am not an expert cook).
Your approach is perfect for me, thank you and yummy to my tummy.
It is okay to squeeze in a little lemon juice rather than the slice? If so how much with your recipe?
NO, if it was Ok to use the juice I would have put that in the recipe. Most of the flavour is in the lemon oil and that's in the skin. Just fish it out afterwards.
Next how to make treacle!
You can sure substitute it with honey
Sorry, British recipes calling for Golden Syrup do not work with Honey. I've had a bakery for 60 years and tried all the alternatives.
Well that looked painless. Took me back a few decades to a dribble of it into my porrige or even spread on a slice of bread.
Yes, that's exactly what I did with it too James.
Yumm, now make a malt loaf and coat it with your syrup to make it lovely and malty sticky
Sounds great Brenda, to hell with the diabetes for once, I'm going to do it. xx
Dial Prix sell it Paul
🌹❤️🙏❤️🌹
I wonder if this could be made with Coconut Sugar ? White sugar plays havoc with my Arthritis, just think, I could have upside-down cake and flapjacks again !!
In South Africa, we also have the British brand named Lyles syrup, but it has become too expensive, and as South Africans always do ...... make a plan ...... by making our very own, and naming it Illovo golden syrup. Honestly, I really, really can't taste the difference between Lyles and Illovo, really. Illovo is a small town on the Natal south coast in South Africa where sugar cane is grown. Just my two cents worth ... From: Tish Gardiner
Many thanks fo the info Tish, most interesting. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, I do appreciate that. For more of my recipes go to my website at : mr-pauls-pantry.com/
