Hi. Really great exercise. Learnig this since 2 days, now I'm at the 3rd part. I come from the accoustic guitar, singer songwriter such things so I never used power chords. Think this exercise is perfect when you are already an accoustic guitar player with no much experience in metal guitar. Hope it will be my introduction to this :-) Thanks a lot and greatings from germany!
Why do Metal fans always ignore Kreator?.....In my opinion they should be a part of the big 4.My big 4 are Tallica,Megadeth and Slayer....Millie's riffs are unique and awesome too.
Not really. Try something like angry again. or kill the king. If you listen to the song over and over again, it always helps when your going to learn it c:
I love how you go over the absolute basics of playing a guitar like how to place your hand and then jump straight into really fast riffs. I think there's been a mix-up of two universally different lessons on either end of the spectrum :P
Kinda funny to think that I figured out how to play like this mostly on my own! There were tabs back then but not too much of these nifty instruction vids hehe :)
This guy gave terrible advice for EQ. If you want a bedroom tone then listen to what he said. If you want a decent tone: Turn the gain down from full until it sounds just a little too clean, then bring it back up just a little bit. I start with my bass turned all the way down and turn it up until it starts to really add balls to the low end, too much more and it becomes boomy. My midrange I try to keep cranked up, this is where most of your definition is as a guitar player, learn to love mids. I turn them up until they're a little too loud and then bring them back down just a bit. Highs I like to adjust by playing a full open E chord with the treble turned all the way down, and I turn it up until I can clearly hear the high notes when I strum the chord.
Depends on whether you're into a very heavy rock/metal rhythm guitar sound,or if you prefer a much more 'rounder' mid-rich tone :)When I'm playing rock or metal rhythms/riffs,I usually use scooped sound..But when I switch to rock/metal lead guitarplaying or shred,I will increase the mids.It works with my Jackson with EMGs 81-85.\m/
The Conqueror, all in all it really depends on the context in a given mix. Genre doesn't matter so much as occupying the proper Hz range in the band setting. This may also require a different EQ pattern for recording vs playing a show. Obviously this is more of a general guideline than a hard rule, Dimebag used scooped mids and it worked in Pantera. But as a lone guitar tone it mostly sounded like shit, the soul all comes from his playing and style. However in most live situations scooping the mid-range in your guitar is going to bury it under the bass/kick drum and the hi-hats.
Gary Hundsrucker I was thinking it's just an older model, but you might be right about the custom. Looks like the M-II with a slanted single coil in the neck instead of the usual humbucker.
im playing the guitar for quiet some time now and i wanted to try playing metal. this video has been very helpful, since u have the basics and many examples here. good video. thank you!!!
Lots of metal bands (including metallica) scoops their mid quite a bit. not a whole lot, but definitely not boosted in their mid range. so i guess its quite flat which is considered "scooped" to some people. for me i just max out all my eq for that sweet brown sound by evh
Metal Marauder ^ indeed, some people do forget that the guitar is a mid-ranged instrument - so live-wise play to it's strength, don't weaken it! recording wise, it's not quite so bad - but still need to be careful with it.
i have to say this is a real how to play video... nice work martin. its not just the how to do it but also how can you do it with alot of explanation..
I would explain that breaking it down and counting the beats until you get it internalized helps make one a tighter player, but then I probably would be talking over your head.
I like his teaching one and two and a. Me a beginner, has to start at the beginning. Learn correctly and accurately. Some day it will be fast and tight for the right tempo
This lesson is great, and the technique is brilliant, but that tone is not conducive to teaching this style well. Your really don't want the gain all the way up, and you should really up the treble and use SOME mids, otherwise you get a flubbery and limp sound.
In 86 i saw Metallica (Metal church opening) in holstedbro in denmark. I guess there was no more that 200 people there. now they can gather 30.000 people. I'm now 45 years old, have a great job, kids, and a nice x-wife. i still love metal, and go to wacken as much as possible, doing mosh pits, WOD, and love every moment of it. Metal is my life and will never led me down. \m/
Jeez! Loads of these beginner guitar lessons give way to much attention to tiny fine tuning details before even explaining the basic technique! 5 minutes of how to use your wrist? Just tell people how to play the damn riff, then refine the technique!
I've always had the same issue with instructional lessons dating way back to the 90s. Some of them start off slow enough, but then you are bombarded with 4 years of theory.
Your correct to a point. To get the same attack on an upstroke is very difficult to pull off, but when your playing triplets of anything with a groove, the upstroke must be equally strong or you'll never be in time and it will sound off. But the mechanics of how you hold a pick really give the down stroke an advantage. I have my metal students work on the upstroke with specific exercises, because the down stroke is so natural, and the upstroke is not. Scott Ian is a master of the technique.
I wasn't trying to be rude! I was saying good luck to all of you on your guitar playing! This video is not for me cause I'm not a beginner at thrash, I been playing for over 30 years but it is a good video to show you the right techniques! Keep on keeping on! \m/
Hey people, I'm interested right now in getting a ramone style downstroke speed on my power chords. I was told that what he explains at 1:23 maybe applies to that. Do you guys think using the technique he mentions with a metronome will properly help to increase the speed?
best thing i would recommend is use all 4 fingers and play 3,4,5,6 pointer on 3, middle on 4, ring on 5, pinky on 6, start on your low e play the 4 notes only moving one finger at a time so after you play the 3rd fret on the low e your pointer moves to the 3rd fret on the a string and so on and so on but the trick is keeping all your fingers on the strings until the not is played and the pacing it on the same fret on the next string ths sounds easy but if you have never done this excersise its going to be though make sure all notes are played clean and all you fingers are always down on the strings work down then up slow a metranome is they greatedt tool in your bag when it vomes to speed and plying parts cleanly. this excersise will build the strength, dexterity, and muscle memory needed to play fast with any kind of of music, rythem, pattern its hard to explain but if you look for speed excersises on youtube you should be able to find an example of this. im a nobody but have had multiple teachers and and friends swear by this for increasing speed and hand strength my first time trying with in 15 minutes could start to notice a difference. if you make a mistake stop reset and start from begging playing threw mistakes will become a bad habbit. never force your speed either it will naturally pick up with practice. great guitarist dont think about how they gotta play the next note, it is all done by muscle memory thats another great tip to take your favorite riffs or licks and play them wile having a conversation with some one that requires you to think about the subject on hand instead of your hands. getting your hands to work by them selves and independently from one another is the name of the game. I hope i dint cornfuse the crap out of anybody ive been drinking but i promise these 2 tips for practice are probably the most important that are constantly not tought, skipped, over looked, or done with poor effort, and they are the deciding factor of your playing. put the work in and become a Hendrix or never challenge your self and stay a Grohl.
Howdy! I've recently built a TV/Guitar I call the "Guitelevision" and would love some guitarist's feedback. My demo video is called "Guitelevision" (First up if you search it) I'd love to hear some thoughts. Many thanks!
Gain- 9 Bass- 8.5 Middle- 3 Trebel- 7 or Bass-9 to 10 Mid-3 Treble-7 Gain-6 to 7 Presence-2 to 4 Reverb-1 to 2 Fiddle around with those till you find something you like.
I tried to do that thing where you incorparate the forearm into the note picking and it seems to be the reason why I ended up breaking 4 strings on my guitar over the course of a month. Before that I had only ever broken 1 guitar string in over a year.
For years, I tried to play thrash/speed riffs with a barre form for the open E chord. I smacked my forehead when this video showed me an alternative using only one finger!
yup, I hear ya! I am 45 now too, but will always be a metalhead! I like alot of newer metal stuff too - I am listening to Dimmu Borgir "Lepers Among Us" as I type this... I have a doom metal band called Goetic Circle, which sounds kinda like Electric Wizard, but with abit more ambient/psychedelic aspects.
That was one of the best video guitar lessons I've ever seen... Although I completely lost him when he started talking about the scales during the Megadeth part. Also, you can't really play Lamb of God with an E as your bass note. As far as I know, all LoG songs are played in Drop D tuning.
And for the more advanced fellas who just want to hear badass riffs: 00:24 - Anthrax style 07:31 - Metallica style 11:49 - Slayer style 16:10 - Megadeth style 19:54 - Lamb of god
Play thrash with mids ond 3 o clock MFV It depends how go you are as a player and how much strenght you put in rhythm. Here's a nice setting that you should use to learn how to mute properly. Bass - 10 o clock, Mid 1 o clock, High 4 o clock.
I am not a fan of this style of music but man...this is the first time in a while Guitar World has uploaded a video with good sound quality, good guitar player, and good guitar tone! Maybe Guitar World is starting to listen to us?

or
Bass-9 to 10

Fiddle around with those till you find something you like.
I tried to do that thing where you incorparate the forearm into the note picking and it seems to be the reason why I ended up breaking 4 strings on my guitar over the course of a month. Before that I had only ever broken 1 guitar string in over a year.
Actually that riff that is "in the style of kirk hammett and james hetfield from metallica" sounds like "Devil's Island" by Megadeth.
DO WANT THAT ESP. Awesome configuration.
Fifty0ne Fuck EMG's, get a real guitar. PRS, Charvel, Carvin, Suhr, etc...
MAN.. YOU R AWESOME..
I could listen to him all day long!
So proud to live in Birmingham, born there and will die there. The cradle of civilisation I mean of metal.
I should also mention it sounds awesome if you do drop your 6th string to D and play the same thing with all notes on the 5th string down two frets.
Its extremly good man. Do a lot of like this. Like.
That was one of the best video guitar lessons I've ever seen... Although I completely lost him when he started talking about the scales during the Megadeth part.
Also, you can't really play Lamb of God with an E as your bass note. As far as I know, all LoG songs are played in Drop D tuning.
Grace and a few others are even lower
Thank you for the Log cue. ‘Lamb of God’
More Martin Goulding please!
And for the more advanced fellas who just want to hear badass riffs:
00:24 - Anthrax style
07:31 - Metallica style
11:49 - Slayer style
16:10 - Megadeth style
19:54 - Lamb of god
I love everysingle guitar this man has.
Holy shit this lesson is so in-depth, really well done
Play thrash with mids ond 3 o clock MFV
It depends how go you are as a player and how much strenght you put in rhythm. Here's a nice setting that you should use to learn how to mute properly. Bass - 10 o clock, Mid 1 o clock, High 4 o clock.
awesome lesson...clear, relevant and extremely helpful :)
I am not a fan of this style of music but man...this is the first time in a while Guitar World has uploaded a video with good sound quality, good guitar player, and good guitar tone! Maybe Guitar World is starting to listen to us?
it's the best style ever. the mosh beats are the bess beats because of the fun, passion and punch, it gets me every single time.
i agree. I don't like thrash either but would also like to see more instructive vids like this for other styles.
Pretty guitar ! Signature Kirk Hammet, no ?
Awesome Video! I didn´t exactly play your riffs, but I got about 10 self-made riffs, while i was listening to you haha ^^
i love how black and metal that guitar looks. i wish esp made a deluxe M-1000 guitar that was string thru. they all have a floyd :(
