    I was in the mosh pits when the thrash movement exploded - I saw Metallica as an opening act, if that tells you anything. The thing that I LOVED(and still do) about thrash was the emphasis - or 'featuring', if you will - of RHYTHM guitar. Yeah, there are crazy leads too, but a lead is like a flavoring, whereas the rhythm is the entire meal. I'd much rather hear a chunky riff than a fiddly lead any day.

    My tone is very similar to his. I play a Line 6 Spider III 30 watt amp. The channel is Metal on Red light. Gain: 7-8, Bass: 4-6, Mid: 3-5, Treb: 6-9. Your settings vary depending on your guitar's pickup. For that rhythm, use the bridge pickup and keep your volume and tone full; the rest is up to your taste.

    This guy gave terrible advice for EQ. If you want a bedroom tone then listen to what he said. If you want a decent tone: Turn the gain down from full until it sounds just a little too clean, then bring it back up just a little bit. I start with my bass turned all the way down and turn it up until it starts to really add balls to the low end, too much more and it becomes boomy. My midrange I try to keep cranked up, this is where most of your definition is as a guitar player, learn to love mids. I turn them up until they're a little too loud and then bring them back down just a bit. Highs I like to adjust by playing a full open E chord with the treble turned all the way down, and I turn it up until I can clearly hear the high notes when I strum the chord.

    • @theconqueror8687
      @theconqueror8687 8 лет назад +3

      Depends on whether you're into a very heavy rock/metal rhythm guitar sound,or if you prefer a much more 'rounder' mid-rich tone :)When I'm playing rock or metal rhythms/riffs,I usually use scooped sound..But when I switch to rock/metal lead guitarplaying or shred,I will increase the mids.It works with my Jackson with EMGs 81-85.\m/

    • @garyhundsrucker5430
      @garyhundsrucker5430 8 лет назад

      Shannon DeLorme I want that guitar though!I looked at their site but it must be a custom job for him!

    • @kdchrm
      @kdchrm 8 лет назад

      The Conqueror, all in all it really depends on the context in a given mix. Genre doesn't matter so much as occupying the proper Hz range in the band setting. This may also require a different EQ pattern for recording vs playing a show.
      Obviously this is more of a general guideline than a hard rule, Dimebag used scooped mids and it worked in Pantera. But as a lone guitar tone it mostly sounded like shit, the soul all comes from his playing and style.
      However in most live situations scooping the mid-range in your guitar is going to bury it under the bass/kick drum and the hi-hats.

    • @kdchrm
      @kdchrm 8 лет назад

      Gary Hundsrucker I was thinking it's just an older model, but you might be right about the custom. Looks like the M-II with a slanted single coil in the neck instead of the usual humbucker.

    • @AnnihilaticJC
      @AnnihilaticJC 11 лет назад +1

      Lots of metal bands (including metallica) scoops their mid quite a bit. not a whole lot, but definitely not boosted in their mid range. so i guess its quite flat which is considered "scooped" to some people. for me i just max out all my eq for that sweet brown sound by evh

    • @takingdaggers
      @takingdaggers 11 лет назад

      Agreed. Most actually boost their mids. It's all about getting it right where it sounds awesoeme.

    • @MetalMarauder
      @MetalMarauder 10 лет назад +1

      John Schiermeister Untrue. Most professionals don't scoop their mids because it makes it hard for the guitar to be heard past the bass and drums.

    • @Mikeyprs21
      @Mikeyprs21 10 лет назад +1

      Metal Marauder ^ indeed, some people do forget that the guitar is a mid-ranged instrument - so live-wise play to it's strength, don't weaken it! recording wise, it's not quite so bad - but still need to be careful with it.

    • @kornklone

    This lesson is great, and the technique is brilliant, but that tone is not conducive to teaching this style well. Your really don't want the gain all the way up, and you should really up the treble and use SOME mids, otherwise you get a flubbery and limp sound.

      I've always had the same issue with instructional lessons dating way back to the 90s. Some of them start off slow enough, but then you are bombarded with 4 years of theory.

    Your correct to a point. To get the same attack on an upstroke is very difficult to pull off, but when your playing triplets of anything with a groove, the upstroke must be equally strong or you'll never be in time and it will sound off. But the mechanics of how you hold a pick really give the down stroke an advantage. I have my metal students work on the upstroke with specific exercises, because the down stroke is so natural, and the upstroke is not. Scott Ian is a master of the technique.

    Hey people, I'm interested right now in getting a ramone style downstroke speed on my power chords. I was told that what he explains at 1:23 maybe applies to that. Do you guys think using the technique he mentions with a metronome will properly help to increase the speed?

    • @kevinberg4578

      best thing i would recommend is use all 4 fingers and play 3,4,5,6 pointer on 3, middle on 4, ring on 5, pinky on 6, start on your low e play the 4 notes only moving one finger at a time so after you play the 3rd fret on the low e your pointer moves to the 3rd fret on the a string and so on and so on but the trick is keeping all your fingers on the strings until the not is played and the pacing it on the same fret on the next string ths sounds easy but if you have never done this excersise its going to be though make sure all notes are played clean and all you fingers are always down on the strings work down then up slow a metranome is they greatedt tool in your bag when it vomes to speed and plying parts cleanly. this excersise will build the strength, dexterity, and muscle memory needed to play fast with any kind of of music, rythem, pattern its hard to explain but if you look for speed excersises on youtube you should be able to find an example of this. im a nobody but have had multiple teachers and and friends swear by this for increasing speed and hand strength my first time trying with in 15 minutes could start to notice a difference. if you make a mistake stop reset and start from begging playing threw mistakes will become a bad habbit. never force your speed either it will naturally pick up with practice. great guitarist dont think about how they gotta play the next note, it is all done by muscle memory thats another great tip to take your favorite riffs or licks and play them wile having a conversation with some one that requires you to think about the subject on hand instead of your hands. getting your hands to work by them selves and independently from one another is the name of the game. I hope i dint cornfuse the crap out of anybody ive been drinking but i promise these 2 tips for practice are probably the most important that are constantly not tought, skipped, over looked, or done with poor effort, and they are the deciding factor of your playing. put the work in and become a Hendrix or never challenge your self and stay a Grohl.

    I tried to do that thing where you incorparate the forearm into the note picking and it seems to be the reason why I ended up breaking 4 strings on my guitar over the course of a month. Before that I had only ever broken 1 guitar string in over a year.

    yup, I hear ya! I am 45 now too, but will always be a metalhead! I like alot of newer metal stuff too - I am listening to Dimmu Borgir "Lepers Among Us" as I type this... I have a doom metal band called Goetic Circle, which sounds kinda like Electric Wizard, but with abit more ambient/psychedelic aspects.

    That was one of the best video guitar lessons I've ever seen... Although I completely lost him when he started talking about the scales during the Megadeth part.
    Also, you can't really play Lamb of God with an E as your bass note. As far as I know, all LoG songs are played in Drop D tuning.

    Play thrash with mids ond 3 o clock MFV
    It depends how go you are as a player and how much strenght you put in rhythm. Here's a nice setting that you should use to learn how to mute properly. Bass - 10 o clock, Mid 1 o clock, High 4 o clock.
