More Cruise Ships SENT TO SCRAP! Which Classic Cruise Ships are being sent for RECYCLING?

  • Опубликовано: 12 ноя 2020
  • The COVID pandemic of 2020 and subsequent cruise shutdown, has led to more cruise ships being retired and scrapped than any year in recent memory.
The cruise shutdown has led to numerous older cruise ships ending their sailing days in 2020, with some unique and much loved ships recently being sold for scrap.
The first ship I wanted to discuss is Karnika, which is reportedly destined for scrap at Alang, India. If you haven’t heard of Karnika, it’s likely because she had been sailing for the new Indian cruise line - Jalesh Cruises - for less than a year before the COVID-19 pandemic crippled cruising.
You may know this ship as the 1990s built Crown Princess, Ocean Village II or Pacific Jewel. Designed by famous architect Renzo Piano for Sitmar Cruise Line, the dolphin-inspired design was transferred to Princess Cruises after its parent company - P&O - purchased Sitmar in the 1980s.
Entering service in 1990 as Crown Princess, the ship was paired with a near-identical fleet mate Regal Princess. Both ships sailed with Princess until the 2000s, with Crown Princess being the first to leave the fleet in 2002 - sailing first for A’Rosa as A’Rosa Blu, then Aida as AIDABlu.
In 2007, the ship transferred to Ocean Village and was renamed Ocean Village II - but only remained in that role for two years before heading down under to become Pacific Jewel for P&O Cruises Australia.
At P&O she was reunited with the former Regal Princess - sailing as Pacific Dawn, and the twins worked alongside another vessel designed by Sitmar - Pacific Pearl, the former Star Princess.
Pacific Jewel left the P&O Cruises fleet in 2019, completing a farewell voyage that sailed from Sydney to Fremantle, before heading north to Singapore. Here the ship was transferred to sail for the newly Jaleesh cruises.
Sadly her time at Jaleesh was cut short by the COVID pandemic. Despite plans to restart cruising in late 2020, it seems the ship will never see another fare paying passenger - with news breaking on 6 November that she had been sold for scrap at Alang.
The cruise ship Astor is another popular and much loved ship that's destined for the scrap yard. Sailing for CMV, the 20,700 ton Astor had developed a loyal following both in Europe and Australia in recent years.
MV. Astor became a regular fixture in the Transocean Tours line up, having also been chartered to a number of other smaller cruise brands.
MV. Astor started cruising for CMV Cruise Line in 2013, first on a chartered basis, but her popularity in the Australian market led to her becoming a permanent member of the CMV fleet.
Astor relocated each year to Australia in time for the Southern Hemisphere summer season, allowing the ship to offer a long “line voyage” between the UK and Australia as part of her itinerary.
In 2019 the Astor was superseded in the Australian market by CMV’s newer, larger, Vasco da Gamma - which prior to joining CMV had been sailing as P&O Australia’s Pacific Eden.
Sadly the collapse of CMV in 2020 saw Astor laid up - along with her fleet mates - with the ship sold in recent weeks to be scrapped at Alagia, Turkey - the same location where Sovereign, Monarch, Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Inspiration and Carnival Imagination have met their fate.
Two other CMV ships that enthusiasts are worried about are the Astoria and Marco Polo. Both among the oldest cruise ships afloat, Astoria dates back a remarkable 72 years to 1948 while Marco Polo is a more sprightly 55 years of age.
Both ships are expected to be scrapped in the coming months, however there is yet to be any official confirmation of this widely held consensus, giving hope that an 11th hour solution may save one, or both, of these classic ships.
While some of our favourite older ships are meeting the end of their days during 2020, it’s not all doom a gloom. Seajets recently acquired two of CMV’s ships - the 1988-built Columbus - which is the former Star Princess I mentioned earlier in this video - as well as the 1988-built Magellan - formerly Carnival Holiday.
These ships join a growing fleet at Seajets which include the former Holland America Maasdam and Veendam, as well as P&O’s former Oceana - though details of their future use still remains illusive.

Have you sailed on Karnika (Pacific Jewel, Ocean Village II, AIDAblu, A'RosaBlu, Crown Princess) or the Astor, Marco Polo or Astoria? What did you think of these classic ships?
✅ Marco Polo Addition: While the video mentions there’s concern over the future of Marco Polo, I also wanted to mention that there is a possibility she may be chartered. Patricia Dempsey (of Liner Lovers) sent this link which you may find interesting: www.unlimitedoffshore.com/post/beautiful-classic-cruise-ship-now-offered-for-charter

Well, I have sailed on "Arosa blu" ( round about 18 years ago) - at that time a very stylish vessel, 2 years later as the "Aida blu" - not quite as elegant anymore, as movie theater was torn out, a, a larger number of passengers , more basic service. The "MS Marco Polo" I got to know on a 12 days-cruise also 15 years ago, at that time we really enjoyed the smaller Ocean Liner with "curved" liner decks (then operated by Orient Lines). The "Astoria" - then sailing as "MS Azores" was 10 years ago already an visibly older vessel with some charme, very good crew and attentive service - of course with some small rusty corners already, but otherwise in good condition (was operating under portuguese flag for a small line called Portuscale Cruises ) I really hope, that some of these old, individual liners stay afloat ! I worked on her when she was Ocean Village II and again during the refit and maiden season as Pacific Jewel so I have many fond memories. It’s sad to see her sold for scrap, probably would have sailed a few more years without Covid.

My husband and I sailed on the Astoria for a one night dinner cruise in 2018. We did not like it at all. We got off to a bad start when we got to Poole and we had to board the ship using a ladder rather than a gangway which resulted in my disabled husband having to be pushed and pulled up by two crew members (and this was a company whose main customers were older people) followed by myself trying to hold two small suitcases and a suit carrier (one night passengers had to carry on their own luggage). We thought it was tatty and showed its age although the food and service were good. We wanted to try the Marco Polo but by the time we started cruising with CMV it had stopped sailing from Tilbury and moved to Bristol. We enjoyed our cruises on Magellan and Columbus and I am glad to see they are going to carry on sailing. Having said that it is sad to see such historic ships possibly being scrapped.

I always imagined older ships got demoted. Going from being _the_ premium ship, to a slightly lesser ship, to a slightly sadder ship to ultimately being a bit of a cr@ppy cruise ship, then finally scrapped. I never thought all that hard work, and when you think of it’s a lot of work to build a cruise ship. I never thought they’d just be scrapped. It’s very sad.
I like how the old Queen Mary became a floating hotel. I thought that sort of thing happened to all the ‘nice’ old gals. I’m booked for the Queen Mary 2 in 2021 so I have feelings for her, like my previous ships. They become mine once I’ve sailed on them 🤫

    Regal Princess.
Quite revolutionary for her time. The Renzo Piano design for the dolphin shaped for forepart.
70,000 tonnes was a very large passenger ship when she came into service in 1991.
She was my first ‘big’ ship and I was her first non-Italian master but the Italian officers were welcoming and gracious towards this outsider and professional as always. She had a lovely bridge with lots of wood and space. Her single rudder made her challenging to manoeuvre in narrow waters and in places like Acapulco required an anchor dredged in.
The Engine Control Room had instrumentation of lights and dials and physical controls unlike the screens and digital displays and controls of modern vessels.
Her passenger cabins were very large by todays standards. She will be fondly remembered by many who sailed in whether as crew or guests.

My first cruise was on the Sun Princess from Seattle to Oz. Fabulous trip calling at Hawaii, Bora Bora, Tahiti, Rarotonga, Fiji, American Samoa, NZ, and Sydney. Just wonderful, and I hope the ship is still going and survives these difficult times.
The ship builders will find demand almost over whelming when this 'pandemic' is over.

We had two Carribbean cruises on OV2, first ever cruise was on OV1 and was supposed to be going on her next year with CMV. My relief that OV1 was saved is now soured by news of OV2 scrapping. As our first cruises the ships were special, I had picture of OV2 on my office wall for years.
Remarked on many occasions returning from excursions how great she looked compared to any other shops in port wth the OV colour scheme and bulbous front. Were booked on third cruise as recession hit and cruise sadly cancelled, she went off to Australia soon after. Beautiful ship.

My cruise story is something I thought would never happen. I was booked for a NZ cruise on Radiance of the Seas ex Sydney on the 14th of March 2020.
My friend & I flew from Perth, WA, to spend a couple of nights in Sydney prior to boarding. The Covid-19 problem was starting to show up more & more, but our cruise was still to go ahead. We boarded the vessel on the 14th, settled in, did life boat drill, then with just 5 minutes to sailing, the captain advised that the cruise was cancelled, because the NZ Government had closed their ports to all cruise ships!! As it was impossible to get a flight home then, we were allowed to stay on board the Radiance as it spent the night in Sydney Harbour. Luckily, after a lot of time on the phone to the airlines we managed to get a flight home that day. In hindsight, we really should have taken up the cruise lines offer of a full refund without penalty up to 48 hours prior to sailing. Of course, things got a lot worse, and just a few days later, the world moved into lockdown. Peter Watson, Busselton, Western Australia.

The Astoria was never really owned by CMV she's a charter vessel that they leased which is actually in her favor, the previous company who owned her when she was named the Azores also just basically rented her. There are actually 4 sailable liners if you count the Cargo-liner/museam ship MS Cap San Diego, she could only carry 30 passengers but she did cross the atlantic doing so in her service life.

With the new ruling of only 7 day cruises set by the CDC, and prior to the disgraceful events of yesterday on the sea dream , it would appear that speed is required to get as any ports of call in to the 7 days as possible and with todays ships exepting the miserable QM2 only able to go at a relative snails pace . Is it not time to bring back QE2 ? as she is able to go faster in reverse than any other cruise ship can travel forwards ....Just saying .

Our female room steward was multi talented - our room steward, one of the leading dancers (stunning costumes) for the shows (many times took our kids onto the stage), and also part of the actual deck crew so could be seen throwing lines ashore when we were berthing etc. Just a fabulous experience.

Chris, what with so many liners being scrapped at this time do you think this may eventually lead to the scrapping of the S.S. United States? Maybe you or one of the other viewers remembers better but my recollection is that there was talk maybe two or three years ago about NOT scrapping the S.S.U.S. because the price or value of steel was so low and so little money would have come from the sale that it wasn't worth the trouble of selling the liner for scrap. Though an American myself and ocean liner enthusiast of many years I would prefer to see the S.S. United States, what remains of her, sold or sunk and her now 51-year limbo finally put to an end.

A shame to see Astoria under threat. My wife and I sailed aboard her (as MV Athena) from Bali to Geraldton and Perth while going around the world by surface transport in 2009, having reached Bali largely by rail, with short road and ferry segments. It was intresting to learn about her history and a very cosy and informal cruise with an interesting sailing down Australia's west coast. The journey continued that way with further voyages aboard Celebrity Millenium, which we joined in Hobart to cross to Auckland, as two of only three passangers aboard the smaller container ship Hansa Flensburg (IMO 9155365) across the Pacific Ocean from Auckland to Oakland via Tahiti and finally Queen Mary 2 back to the UK from New York (with rail again for the transits across Australia and the US). Both Classic International (who operated Astoria then as Athena) and Celebrity were kind enough to allow us to join the cruises part way in (though for the full fare), which allowed us to do true 'line voyages' aboard. Athena had started out in Perth before we joined, Millenium had started in Sydney...

Seajets have a habit of collecting old Incat and Austal high speed catamaran ferries from the 1990s and using parts from some of them to keep the others going, so they own several more old Incat and Austal ferries than are shown on their Wikipedia page. I suspect they may do much the same with elderly cruise ships, cannibalising some to keep the others going.

Dear Chris, I sailed on the Marco Polo twice to northern Europe, looking like a ship with a rather attractive profile, the interior was also pleasant, the main bar/lounge decorated in oriental style, the upstairs lounge was less attractive, the self service restaurant at breakfast was a bit of a nightmare, turning up late seats were hard to find, otherwise breakfasts were very good, however this was not the case with dinner, fare not good at all, sparse and not very good service, the second time on the ship the dinner was worse. The cabins were comfortable nicely decorated with good storage. Being such an historic ship/liner as the original Alexander Pushkin, on the run from Russia to Canada, I was extremely pleased to sail on her, I, like you adore ships, am sad she may be heading to the breakers, before I forget I also loved the sculpture of Nureyev by the swimming pool. I once kissed that man, however thats another story. Thank you for your up to date news it really is much appreciated, although tinged with sadness, I hate to hear ships meeting with their' fate, however it occurs, I always feel they are living beings.

At least Astoria will not be scrapped. In July 2021, the ship was purchased by an American group, which also acquired the MV Funchal. The new owners intend to use the Astoria for trips between Lisbon and Funchal in Madeira.

@@nielskjr5432 This is what Wikipedia tells:
"In 2021, Brock Pierce bought the 60 years old ship Funchal, laid up in Lisbon for 8 years, and spent at least US$ 8.3 million - € 7.1 million (Purchase US$ 1.9 million - € 1.6 million + Refurbishing US$ 6.4 million € 5.5 million) with 200 rooms - 180 people workers at Yard Naval da Rocha Conde de Óbidos into a 5-stars hotel. Another ship, the Astoria, 75 years old at least, docked in Rotterdam, was also bought, to be transferred to Lisbon for refurbishing and naval certificates, and later travelling to Funchal, Madeira."
I also found similar information on some other websites. Obviously Funchal will be a floating hotel and Astoria will obviously continue to cruise.
Yes, Funchal is indeed beautiful. Astoria has never been especially beautiful, but her history is pretty unique.
Personally I think the last beautiful liners were built in the early 1970's. One of my favourites was the former Norwegian liner MS Vistafjord (1972), renamed Caronia, Saga Ruby and finally Oasia. Unfortunately the fully refurbished ship was sold for scrap in 2017, because her owner went bankrupt, and they couldn't find a buyer

I remember when I was 17 in 1977 my family cruised on the CTC Russian cruise line a ship called Leonid Sobinov, It was a great cruise sailing from Sydney the the Fijian Islands. 14 Nights. We sailed through a cyclone on our return to Australia and although it was as rough as I still made it to every meal winning a certificate from the dining crew as event the captain fell sea sick on the return. I know the following year or so one of the female crew jumped into Sydney harbor from a port hole window to seek asylum in Australia. She was later known as the bikini girl as that was all she had or wore when she jumped ship. I have always wondered about that ship. and it's future as after the girl defected CTC lines stopped coming to Australia.
