You can lay a piece of wax paper over the body filler after applying it and use a small board on top of the wax paper to flatten and spread the filler out. After the filler sets up, the wax paper will peel right off leaving a flattened patch that requires minimum sanding.
Thanks!
Thanks. I have several repairs I need to make on my aluminum pool cage frame. I'm certain the wax paper will also help to keep the autobody filler in place while it's setting. I've had a bit of difficulty keeping the filler from sinking into the little holes. Hoping this will help.
Bought a house and realized someone who was here before me punched the steel front door, on the inside. I thought of filling it with auto body filler...now I think I will. Thanks!
For little screw holes in hollow metal doors or panels, You can use a foam fun and shoot some foam in the holes, then after it has expanded dig a little out, then fill with Bondo
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Why did you quit making videos? I just came across your channel and I love it! I hope that you will reconsider and make more because you’re really talented and such a good teacher.
My steel entry door has a dent where it swung into the exterior light fixture... nine years ago! Finally going to fix it this year now that I have a solid procedure to follow. Thanks, John!
Hi, John. It's too bad that you decided to stop doing home reno channels. I mean, I respect your decision, but being a fan of all your other channels (even, shockingly, the scrap bin... although that one could have more project videos... just kidding ;-)) I have to say that I also especially enjoyed watching the various things you did to your house. I also lament that you took off a lot of the videos you previously posted here, because I did actually come back and rewatched a lot of them when they were still there.
Don't take this comment as a complaint, though, it's really meant to be an expression of admiration of both your skills and your versatility.
Was just watching some older video's ( main channel 2014 and older ) and now liking them ( didn't know that was a thing till you educated me ). Till this came on.
You are fixing a whole lot of doors lately , no wonder you are so good at it 😁👍
he also did door installations professionally in the past, he's damn good at it
Great job! I really enjoyed watching your process.😊👍
Thank you so much for this video. I was looking for a long time how to fix my rusty french door
Very ingenious. I'm locking this one in the memory bank for future use.
Ford those with child discipline issues, I solved it for a friend about 20 years ago. I was there when the door knock came, 6 year old won the footrace, and flung open the door to a stranger.
Mom was upset. Stranger embarrassed.
I excused myself, drove 4 miles to HD, bought another sight hole.
Returning, I asked if Mom and Dad would allow me to install it, and stood the little girl on her toes to find the install height.
Little girl could now be excited, reach the door first, and remain safe, by announcing strangers or know she knew who she opened for.
John, been watching your videos for years and love them all. Wondering if you will be doing anymore "home" videos. They're my favorite!!!!
That looks great 🎉
Great job , Ive been a carpenter for 27yrs and that’s what I would’ve done. What kind of epoxy did you use .
Hey, how come no new videos? Your videos have helped me with a few projects.
“John Heisz” is his new channel. (Typo fixed)
@@mwinner101 thanks!
@@arollofcukin2452 John Heisz autocorrect ruined my first attempt. No problem. 👍
This is the smartest thing I had seen. 👍
These repair suggestions will come in handy. What type of metal are you using for the patches so it won't rust? Also any recommendations for the paint type?
Painted metal won’t rust...
Great video! Any recommendations if the metal has a wood pattern?
Good video, John. I look forward to using your tips, soon. Keep up the great work/videos.
Does bondo contain asbestos, I know it has talc in it, would this be dangerous to sand down inside the house? I didn’t want to have to take my front door off but have some tiny holes to fix and a minor dent but spent years picking all nontoxic products for my home because of my health.
Brilliant video, thank you.
What epoxy did you use on the door as filler?
Awesome . On my to do list
You never want to flat grind with an angle grinder, a bear might sneak up behind you and steal your pancakes.
I hate when that happens
Exellent video, thank you
Sorry I doubted end result! How long did you have to sand larger holes to get them that smooth?
As long as it takes to sand them until they are smooth, lol.
Amazing.. loved it
Subscribed 😊
How many more videos will we get about that door? I amnot complaining by the way :D
This was the last one, but there will be more in the future on other project builds.

How do I go about fixing a big hole in a garage door? They are thinner then this item in your video
Could you tell me what kind of sander you have? I love that it looks to have padding ?
I have a metal screen door where the hydraulic closure has stripped out screw holes. Would this work for filling in the old holes, and be strong enough to take a new screw?
Why not do both sides first and then line up the jig with holes at each end? No measuring needed.
I shared your video w/ Incredible Tiny Homes on youtube. The ESP homes are made from steel door remnants. 🤓 That Bondo? looks fun to play around with. Do you think the Bondo would be a good rust preventative over the ESP screws? (ESP-engineered steel panel)
They make blank out plates and blank out plugs for deadbolt holes. Repairing a door this way doesn’t last long. It’s best to have a professional fix them so they last.
What is a crossover tool box?
is there a part 2 so we can see the finished product/door? or did it not turn out as great as you wanted? It's okay if it didn't... you can tell me. Im not the type to have a "better balls contest" with other ppl.
Which Sander are you using?
What type of saw did you use to cut the screws?
What kind of auto paint filler do you buy?
Didn't I watch this video a few days ago? Are you messing with me? :-)
Can you please post the name of the auto body products used.thank you
My guess is Bondo
Your business prior to youtube was a doors installations wasn't it? You should know how to make the doors look good and fit well.
I don't think it was his business (as much as part of his business) but I know from prior comments that he did a lot of them.
Thanks for the video.
What grit sandpaper did you use on that was That an orbital sander?
In the auto business you progress from small to higher grit to keep it smooth.
Metal with filler ends up at 1500 to 2000 grit.
What happened to all the videos on this channel? All the basement videos are gone and the shed videos etc...
Indeed... :-(
your own furniture plan building .
Just change the door
👍👍
into recycling i see...
With the cost of new doors today, I'm happy to spend a couple hours to refurbish one too !
Saving $250 is like making $250 :)
man you are really milking this door video
milk it! in 2014 after the local policed kicked in my garage door -short unhappy story for the bad guy--i used johns door vids as inspiration --2 x 6 and 1/2 in ply nobody is kicking that in
People should be grateful that I'm putting the extra time and effort into segmenting out these specific sections and posting them separately. Makes the relevant stuff easier to find and access without going through the whole project video.
+I Build It Home amen to that.
@@IBuildItHome Its the first time I've seen one of your videos and appreciate that you parted it out as i was only interested in the repair aspect. Keep up the good work.
