Back in the days when this show was on quizzes in magazines were popular. There were quizzes about everything and anything. Relationship quizzes, health quizzes, etc. They still have them except they are now on the internet. In this episode Edith found a longevity quiz to figure out how someone is going to live. She did the quiz and she also did it for Archie. She had Archie dying at 63 so Archie is redoing the quiz cuz he don't trust Edith's math. When they redid the test Meathead had Archie dying at 57 and it weighs heavily on his mind. That is a rundown of the episode.

I think it was the style of the clothes that the generation wore. Now, in 2024, we have 70 year olds wearing blue jeans.i don't think any 50 plus year old wore blue jeans and t- shirts in the 1970s, not if they were born back in the 1920's, if so not many.

Archie was taking a life expectancy test according to lifestyle. Carrol O’Connor though he looked older was probably only in his late 40’s to early 50’s here. He aged prematurely. There’s another episode where it’s Archie’s birthday and he insists he’s 49 until Meathead finds Archie’s birth certificate and confirms Archie is really turning 50 at which point Archie had a very funny midlife crisis.

And we know now, that he was really in fact not living a good lifestyle in real life. Remember when he begun having heart issues, and he had to have a couple of procedures done!! Big wake up call for Carroll O'Connor!! When Heat of the Night came on the air, and Carroll O'Connor was one of the main actors of this new series, I remember when the first episode aired, I was beyond shocked to see a healthier, slimmer actor, he even had some color return to his face. That was a great surprise. What did end up causing this mans death, if youll remember, a drug dealer gave his son some bad stuff, and died from it. Carroll was a one man crusader to take down these drug dealers. He did have the one responsible for his sons death put away. But in the end that fight ended up being detrimental and eventual death of the anger filled and devastating man to lose his life.

I’m not sure if their characters are supposed to be the actors actual age or not.
    J. Lo & Demi Moore are likely older now than Archie and Edith were in that episode.

One has to remember the times; smoking was probably common. I think back then, the cancer warnings were on the packages. I forget when the advertising of cigarettes were off TV commercials and magazines. Would you believe, one can smoke almost anywhere, and today, if you live in an apt. your neighbor can complain about you smoking outside and the smoke/smell is blowing their way. I do not smoke (too expensive now), but my dad and my grandfather who baby-sat me, did, and my dad used to have poker gatherings on the weekend with his friends. I would see a cloud of smoke in the den they were playing in. Now we know the dangers of second-hand smoke. My dad had a heart attack at 50 (his last heart attack/death was at 56) and because of the chest pain, that is why he quit. He did try though. Those poker parties still continued with him in that cloud of smoke. My older brother died at 57/heart attack and did not smoke. Our mother had heart problems and diabetes died at 60 (did not smoke), but I think about that second-hand smoke theory. I am fortunate and have outlived them all and I am mid 60's. Most people i have associated with since my late teens do not smoke. If I do come across a smoker, I sure can smell it on them compared when I was younger and around smokers, I did not notice.
My husband always had an end of the day beer or two. I would ask him, are you drunk (I do not drink after I turned 25 years old, when I started to drive, I hated beer or the smell of it. My drive to work, I would pass on the freeway a Budweiser plant and I could smell that beer smell. I think I did my most drinking before I was 21. My choice was the fruity mix drinks, slushy and colorful where one does not taste the alcohol that much), he said, no. It mellows him out. Which is good, after a day of work, to relax and mellow out and hopefully release any stress. I believe stress kills. My husband justified drinking beer; it is healthy because of all the grain ingredients. I believe in those days of the Bunker's show, drinking was common. Even with the stay-at-home housewives, closet drinkers and the stresses they lived with; husband always working with business deals, martini's lunches, any extra activities without the wife after work (bars, my dad like bowling, etc.), loneliness, paying bills, keeping the home clean, cooking, caring for the kids, no extra cars in the household to get out, etc...
Back in those days, people probably had their children at a young age. The men worked and they probably aged faster. My parents I always thought were old and old looking. I do not know if I am delusional, but when I look at my school friends (all mid 60's), I still see us as we look in High School and I do not recognize that we are old (until I realize our age). Parents who have their kids since the 90's, at still the same early age as earlier generations, the parents standing with their kids, they look like they can be brother and sister. I think because the parents of today are busy and involved/participating with their kids after school programs, sports, and have a more nutritional lifestyle. You are beautiful and I was surprised once you mentioned you were born in 1988. You look very young/youthful. Not that mid-30's is not young, but when you are my age, you are really young.

The reason Michael doesn't "work" is because he is in school to get his college degree in sociology. Archie always gave him a hard time about that even though he was doing it to help his family. Michael was orphaned at a young age when a car crash claimed the lives of his parents. He was raised by his uncle Casimir Stivic, an ex-Marine lieutenant turned florist. You can imagine how Archie dealt with a tough marine turned florist. Michael's character arc is IMHO disjoined as he represented the 60's counterculture as a foil to Archie's brand of bigotry. Michael finally gets his degrees and accepts a faculty position at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and he and Gloria move to California at the end of the 1977-78 season. It was then explained through guest appearances that their marriage is troubled due to Gloria's infidelity with one of Michael's college faculty colleagues. Even though they resolved their differences, trouble looms as Michael loses his job after he and Gloria participate in a nude protest at a proposed nuclear power plant site and are arrested. That was the last appearance of the Michael Stivic character. We learn in the spinoff series "Gloria" that Michael left her and their son Joey for one of his students and then moved to a nudist commune.
