I'm tearing up once again. Every time I see this scene it gets me. This is Archie's soft side that we rarely see. They happen every now and then when you dont expect them. Likewise, Edith has her feisty moments that take us all by surprise......And we cheer her on.
This show was one of the most revolutionary shows to hit tv. No stone/topic was left unturned; and we all loved it!!!

No one ever talks about it, but Archie's character development in this show and forward into the spin-off "Archie Bunker's Place" was off the charts. Archie grew as a person more during this series than any other character I have ever seen.

There were times when Edith would do something that Archie didn't agree with but he couldn't get mad at her about because he knew it came from the goodness of her heart, he would say, "Edith, you're a pip, a real pip." Here, for the first time in the series, she's returning that sentiment to him.

All in the Family was something that we always watched as a family. There were also "The Jeffersons", "Sanford and Son", and "Chico and the Man".
My wife died a year and a half ago, and I'll never get over the loss. You learn how to deal with it, after a fashion, but you never stop grieving. My wife and I were together for only 23 years, and you share SO much of your life with your spouse and you know them so well and you've built your life around them, so when they're suddenly gone, the loss is profound. And very deep.
This made me cry. My wife, Erin, and I didn't have the same kind of relationship that Edith and Archie had. We were equal in most aspects, we shared cooking and cleaning dishes, that kind of thing, but she always kept the books, and I was always Mr. Mechanic. 😉 I was probably the better cook, but she was better at bigger meals. More organized.
    I miss her so much.
    Thanks for sharing this episode.

That's just Archie's way of trying to tell Edith how much he really loves her and is really concerned about her. Archie' does have a heart, you just have to peel back those harden layers in order to see it. Edith has her own way of peeling back those harden layers to reveal how Archie really feels, she's done it before with just a hurtful look in her eyes, and Archie caves, every time.

Pip is basically an expression for "Your Something Else." It can be used comically, sarcastically or sentimentally. I still use the phrase, especially when my friend will say something stupid, obvious or something that has no relation to what I am talking about. Like the other day my friend saw me fixing an OLD fuse box, there were wires hanging out everywhere. My friend at one point said, "you have enough wires there to relaunch the Apollo 11, The Space Shuttle and have enough left over to hack North Korea." My response "You're a pip Jim, a REAL pip." Basically: "You're not helping."
Beyond that, yes, this was a time when actors knew how to ACT. They were real people with multi talents and knew how to improve on the spot if anything slipped up or derailed off script. The days when TV shows were shot in front of studio audiences.

I thought I would make your experience a little easier by providing you with the who's and where's of All in the Family besides the main characters. There are many characters that are mentioned but only appeared in two or three episodes.
Stretch Cunningham: Archie's coworker at the plant and one of his best friends who is always joking. He lives elsewhere in the city no where near Archie. Archie thinks he is the funniest man alive but he is very not funny. Stretch (the character) dies during the series and the family asks Archie to deliver the eulogy. This is when Archie finds out that his long time friend was Jewish and causes Archie to reflect on his anti-semitism. BTW, the eulogy episode is a must see. He appears in a few episodes.
Barney Hefner: A friend of Archie's who lives in the neighborhood. His wife, Blanche, is always running off with other men and his dog Rusty hates Archie.
Hank: Another co-worker of Archie's who pops in once in a while.
Little Immanuel: A Puerto Rican co-worker of Archie's. He appears in one episode
Elmo: African American co-worker of Archie's
Mr Whitehead: He appears in two or three episodes. He is the local funeral director. He is a small person with white hair.
Beverly Lasalle: A transvestite whose life Archie once saved when he passed out in the back of Archie's cab. He did not know he was a transvestite. Another funny episode. Beverly makes three appearances and is killed in a later episode when Mike and Beverly are jumped and beaten because Beverly was a transvestite.
Munson: Owner of a small cab company who Archie drives for on weekends to earn extra money.
Justin Quigley: A very elderly gentleman who Edith found wandering in his pajamas after he "broke out" of the old folks home. She brought him home and the Bunkers help him and his girlfriend, Jo, try to figure out how they can survive on Social Security.
    neighborhood. He
Pinky Peterson: One of Archie's friends who loves playing practical jokes on Archie. His son was killed in Vietnam. He appears in 3 or 4 episodes.
Father Majeski: A catholic priest who meets the Bunkers after Edith accidentally dents his car with a can of peaches. He makes 3 or 4 appearances.
Mildred "Boom-Boom" Turner: A secretary at the plant where Archie works. A blonde lady who claims she is in her 30's but looks much older. She has large breasts which is how she got her nickname.
Theresa Bettencourt: A Puerto Rican admissions specialist at the local hospital who is studying to become a registered nurse. She meets, and clashes, with Archie while she is trying to get him admitted for his gallbladder surgery. When Mike and Gloria move next door the Bunkers rent out their room and Theresa becomes their boarder.
Kelcy: He is the owner of Kelcy's Bar, a local bar that Archie frequents. kelcy appears in many episodes and is played by three different actors.
Harry Snowden: He is the bartender at Kelcy's and later becomes Archies business partner when Archie buys the bar.
Russell and Amelia DeKuyper: Edith's cousin and her rich husband. They appear in 3 or 4 episodes. Archie dislikes them because Russell is always reminding Archie how rich they are.
Reverend Felcher: The minister of the Bunkers preferred church where only Edith normally attends. Archie has accompanied her occasionally. Archie habitually mispronounces his name and calls him the Reverend Fletcher. He is mentioned often but never seen
Reverend Chong: Asian American Reverend who replaces Reverend Felcher. He appears in three episodes
    Geography in Archie's world:
Archie lives in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, New York just off of Northern Boulevard. He works at Pendergast Tool and Die as a foreman on the loading dock and he also moonlights as a cab driver.
Kelcy's Bar: Archie's neighborhood bar of choice for a beer. He later buys the place and calls it Archie Bunker's Place. That is also the title of the new series once All in the Family ended. There is an episode where Archie and Meathead get locked in the storeroom of the bar and they bond and this is when it is revealed that Archie was an abused child.
    Ferguson's: The local supermarket
Kressler's: The local department store where Gloria gets a job.
The Pink Tiger Theater: The local burlesque club where Beverly LaSalle works.
Jefferson Cleaners: Local dry cleaning store owned by Archie's neighbor and nemesis George Jefferson.
Flushing High School: Archie's school that he attended until he had to drop out to help support his family during the depression

People are so quick to react to the surface and not look into their heart and soul. They would be surprised at what they see, and maybe, just maybe, do some growing on their own. I wish you wouldn't have missed what he said at the end during the comment, I think it would have touched you also.

I think that is the last scene Archie and Edith appeared in together. It was the last episode that season and the next year Edith's character didn't return. The actress moved on and show only had Archie left from the original four. The best episodes are seasons 1-5 or 6 IMO.

Yes, this was the last scene of the last episode of All In The Family . Because of it's popularity Norman Lear created Archie Bunkers Place, which did feature the Edith character for the first several episodes.

A pip is slang, I do not think used today... Archie called Edith that often, as in a catalyst, but inherently a good one.
Anyway, a pip is a seed, as in a cherry pip or a peach pip, and the phrase "Your a pip" is a statement of admiration. Think of it as instead of being just the "cherry on top", the seed of which a tree full of cherries is grown.
Thing about Archie's character, is while as ignorant, judgmental, callous and overbearing as he appears, deep inside he's quite caring, never shallow and really does not adhere to the facade he presents.

Let's compare Abbot Elementary "comedy" to this show. No contest. AE seems vacuous by comparison

*No responses here from you so you're not reading these but ok.* I really, really love that you see this show for what it was. I have more input but since you don't respond, I'm done.

Rob Reiner & Sally Field (Mike & Gloria) had left the show, because it was getting stale and boring ...i agree with their decision

See ... you did end up watching the whole episode. You have time. You can review one episode at a time in two or three parts.
